A Modified Peer Rating System To Recognise Rating Skill As A Learning Outcome, Violet Cheung, Saera R. Khan
A Modified Peer Rating System To Recognise Rating Skill As A Learning Outcome, Violet Cheung, Saera R. Khan
Psychology
The peer rating system used here advances the quantitative literacy goals outlined in social sciences. We instituted a mid-semester intervention to teach rating skills and used an objective index to track longitudinal changes of skill mastery over the course of the semester. Seventy-four students in five advanced research classes followed the procedure of the existing peer rating system by completing reading assignments, writing reflections online, engaging in class discussions, rating their peers’ reflections, and receiving feedback of their group effort. Unique to our modified system, peer ratings were compared with each other and also with the instructor ratings to derive …

Psychology
Negative biases in cognition have been documented consistently in major depressive disorder (MDD), including difficulties in the ability to control the processing of negative material. Although negative information-processing biases have been studied using both behavioral and neuroimaging paradigms, relatively little research has been conducted examining the difficulties of depressed persons with inhibiting the retrieval of negative information from long-term memory. In this study, we used the think/no-think paradigm and functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess the cognitive and neural consequences of memory suppression in individuals diagnosed with depression and in healthy controls. The participants showed typical behavioral forgetting effects, but …

Going Beyond The Text: The Inferencing Processes Of Skilled Readers In L1 And L2 Across Reading Tasks, Angela Meyer Sterzik
Faculty & Staff Publications - ELI
This small exploratory study investigated the inferencing processes of skilled first language (L1) and second language (L2) readers for two academic tasks. The goal was to examine possible effects of language and task, or reading purpose, on the frequency and distribution of inferences. Participants (n = 10) were native speakers of German enrolled at a large university in Hessen, Germany in a B.Ed. program. Participants read two expository texts (one written in German and the other written in English) in two task conditions: summary and position-paper. Think-aloud protocols while reading and stimulated recall immediately after reading were recorded, transcribed, coded, …

2016-2017: Scott County, Iowa and the Scott County Health Department
Scott County, IA is facing a community lead poisoning problem, much like other counties in the state. One of these are Black Hawk County, northwest of Scott. Black Hawk County approached the lead poisoning problem by partnering with organizations including the University of Northern Iowa, the Iowa Poison Control Center, and a multitude of medical groups. Funding, procedures for action, and education were also factors in assessing the lead problem. Black Hawk County’s number of lead poisonings decreased after approaching the problem, while Scott County’s problem worsened. By using similar methods, we hope that Scott County's lead problem will also …

Exploring Alternative Funding Methods For The Lead Remediation Program In Scott County, Iowa, Dr. John Delaney, Brittany A. Poynor
2016-2017: Scott County, Iowa and the Scott County Health Department
Lead poisoning is an environmental as well as social problem. Areas with more older housing and higher rates of poverty are also the areas with the most lead poisoned children. Though the United States banned the use of lead paint in in 1978 and lead poisoning is preventable, lead poisoning remains a public health problem. Homes built before 1978 may pose risk of lead paint exposure, but of special concern to Scott County are the number of homes built before 1950.
Scott County, Iowa is home to some of the oldest housing units in the U.S. Iowa ranks fifth among …

Race, Culture & Abuse Of Persons With Disabilities, Elizabeth P. Cramer, Y. Joon Choi, Avina I. Ross
Race, Culture & Abuse Of Persons With Disabilities, Elizabeth P. Cramer, Y. Joon Choi, Avina I. Ross
Social Work Publications
This chapter will explore how race and culture influence the lives of persons with disabilities who are experiencing abuse. The discussion will be framed by an intersectional lens and will be informed by cultural humility and critical race theory. Practitioners need to remain open to the idea that they cannot and will not know all there is to know about any given culture, and they should be open to hearing about their clients’ understanding and experiences of culture. Rather than knowing certain pieces of “knowledge” about a cultural group, it is more important to understand what pieces of culture the …
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy: Three Things To Keep In Mind, Keith W. Zirkle
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy: Three Things To Keep In Mind, Keith W. Zirkle
PADM 656 Fund Development for the Nonprofit Sector
A culture of philanthropy is necessary for a nonprofit to be successful in 2016. Resources and funds are not so bountiful as they were in the past. Every nonprofit is different and has a different audience, but in general, there are three items to keep in mind while developing a philanthropic culture: 1) nonprofits should strategically plan their culture; 2) nonprofits should engage their own employees and volunteers in the culture; and 3) nonprofits must actively appreciate their donors, old and new.
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy In Nonprofit Arts Organizations, Adam B. Ferguson
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy In Nonprofit Arts Organizations, Adam B. Ferguson
PADM 656 Fund Development for the Nonprofit Sector
This paper explores a growing theory known as a culture of philanthropy through the lens of a nonprofit arts organization. A culture of philanthropy refers to an organization’s attitude toward philanthropy, fund development, and the effort to create a community of donor inclusion which can have a lasting effect on the organization and the community well beyond financial growth. Arts organizations are exploring radical innovative methods in order to create a culture of funders, continuous patronage, and community engagement.
This paper also discusses the concept of venture philanthropy and its efforts to change the relationship between funders and grantees from …
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy, Lindsay Cavanah
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy, Lindsay Cavanah
PADM 656 Fund Development for the Nonprofit Sector
There are many elements to consider when creating a culture of philanthropy. First, one must acknowledge the definition of philanthropy. Philanthropy is defined as “the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people” (Philanthropy, n.d., para 1). Although this is true, an organization which promotes a culture of philanthropy may view philanthropy as its broader definition of “an effort to promote human welfare” (Philanthropy, n.d., para 2). A culture of philanthropy is a newly perceived way for organizations to view the process of securing resources (Gibson, 2016). There are four components on which a …

The Emerging Role Of Universities In Collective Impact Initiatives For Community Benefit, Jason Smith, Lynn E. Pelco, Alex Rooke
Division of Community Engagement Resources
Universities are increasing their efforts to more clearly demonstrate their social value. This article illustrates how higher education administrators can incorporate collective impact partnerships in their community benefit strategies. The article explores two of the more familiar paradigms for community benefit—community engagement and anchor institution. Collective impact principles and practices are then presented. Finally, a case study provides a tangible example of how one university’s role in a collective impact initiative transitioned in response to the community. We end the article with ten takeaways and an invitation for higher education administrators to identify their own learning and action steps that …

Background
Perception-based scales are widely used for household food insecurity (HFI) assessment but were only recently added in national surveys. The frequency of assessments needed to characterize dynamics in HFI over time is largely unknown. The study aims to examine longitudinal changes in monthly reported HFI at both population- and household-level.
Methods
A total of 157 households in rural Mkushi District whose children were enrolled in the non-intervened arm of an efficacy trial of biofortified maize were included in the analysis. HFI was assessed by a validated 8-item perception-based Likert scale on a monthly basis from October 2012 to March …
Community, Commons, And Degrowth At Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage, Joshua Lockyer
Community, Commons, And Degrowth At Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage, Joshua Lockyer
Faculty Publications - Behavioral Sciences
For centuries, intentional communities of various sorts have been formed to experiment with alternative socio-cultural and economic models. As we enter the Anthropocene and find ourselves in a world challenged to create a post-carbon economy that is no longer reliant on endless growth, such models are in greater demand than ever. Since the mid-1990s, hundreds of ecovillages around the world have been experimenting with ways to achieve prosperity without growth. Linking to three transition discourses, this article uses ongoing ethnographic research to describe how one intentional community-Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in northeast Missouri, USA-is forging such models by cultivating cooperative cultural …

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Binge Eating Disorder In Adolescence, Rebekah Gohl
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Binge Eating Disorder In Adolescence, Rebekah Gohl
Psychology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Eating disorders are among the most prevalent psychological disorders for the adolescent population. The onset of binge eating disorder (BED) occurs in late adolescence to early adulthood and affects numerous individuals who struggle with identity formation and social development. This paper critiques the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in treating binge eating disorder in adolescence. While evidence on the efficacy of this treatment is limited, all research supports the use of cognitive behavioral therapy in treating binge eating disorder. More research on treatment of binge eating disorder must be conducted as adolescence is a crucial time for identity formation.
