The Broadband Digital Divide And The Benefits Of Mobile Broadband For Minorities, James Prieger Apr 2013

The Broadband Digital Divide And The Benefits Of Mobile Broadband For Minorities, James Prieger

School of Public Policy Working Papers

This study sets out the facts regarding broadband deployment and usage in the US and the particular promise of mobile broadband for minorities. Fixed broadband is nearly ubiquitous and most people have access to four or more mobile broadband providers. Growth in fixed broadband usage is leveling off, while mobile broadband usage growth remains robust. Blacks and Hispanics generally have fewer fixed broadband options but more mobile broadband providers available. Gaps in broadband usage overall (fixed and mobile combined) for minorities persist and are quite large. Matching estimators show that lagging broadband adoption among minority groups is not fully accounted …

Strategic Marketing By Small To Medium Sized Enterprises (Smes), Aniq Anwar Apr 2013

Strategic Marketing By Small To Medium Sized Enterprises (Smes), Aniq Anwar

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

Although there are many stages involved within the strategic planning process which makes the process somewhat daunting and difficult to follow to the letter for SMEs, research suggests that strategic marketing plays an important role for the success of many businesses. The literature review conducted for this research suggests that many authors writing in the subject domain focus on such activities in large organisations when providing details on how to adapt the strategic marketing approach, and they tend to ignore these issues in relation to small and medium size organisations. To identify the importance of the strategic marketing approach for …

A Functional Analysis Of 2012 U.S. Presidential Primary Debates, Mark Glantz, William L. Benoit, David Airne Apr 2013

A Functional Analysis Of 2012 U.S. Presidential Primary Debates, Mark Glantz, William L. Benoit, David Airne

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study examines the Republican primary debates from the 2012 U.S. presidential campaign. With a weak economy, numerous Republicans vied to challenge President Barack Obama who was completing his first term in office. Of course, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney eventually seized the Republican nomination. This investigation employs content analysis and applies Functional Theory to the primary campaign debate messages. Acclaims were more common than attacks, which in turn occurred more frequently than defenses; and policy was discussed more often than character. Findings from the 2012 debates are compared with results from analysis of presidential primary debates in earlier campaigns.

The Protectors And The Protected: What Regulators And Researchers Can Learn From Irb Members And Subjects, Ann Freeman Cook, Helena Hoas, Jane Clare Joyner

Psychology Faculty Publications

Clinical research is increasingly conducted in settings that include private physicians’ offices, clinics, community hospitals, local institutes, and independent research centers. The migration of such research into this new, non–academic environment has brought new cadres of researchers into the clinical research enterprise and also broadened the pool of potential research participants. Regulatory approaches for protecting human subjects who participate in research have also evolved. Some institutions retain their own Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), but Independent IRBs, community hospital IRBs and community–based IRBs also fulfill oversight responsibilities. This article sheds light on this evolving world by discussing the findings gleaned from …

Decolonizing Ecology Through Rerooting Epistemologies, Lauren M. Bitter Apr 2013

Decolonizing Ecology Through Rerooting Epistemologies, Lauren M. Bitter

Pitzer Senior Theses

My project is centered around a community garden in Upland, California called the People and Their Plants garden. This garden represents a five hundred year living history designed to show the changes in the ecological landscape of Southern California caused by colonization. This autoethnographic thesis works towards personal, interpersonal, and community-wide decolonization through building reciprocal relationships with Indigenous Elders. I explore, critique and problematize research and ethnography by examining the politics of knowledge, language, history, and ecology. I interrogate my own learned knowledge systems as well as colonial/capitalist food systems—and recognize how those systems/relations have worked to render Indigenous ways …

Positive Youth Development And Substance Use In Emerging Adults, Stevy Scarbrough Apr 2013

Positive Youth Development And Substance Use In Emerging Adults, Stevy Scarbrough

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Problem: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) bi-annual National Youth Risk Behavior Survey (NYRBS), nearly 45% of all teens have smoked cigarettes at some point, nearly 71% have tried alcohol, and 40% have tried marijuana. Many potential factors have been identified as having a positive effect in treatment and cessation programs for at-risk adolescent populations, but research investigating the effects of these factors in prevention is still limited in scope. The present study examines relationships between risky health behaviors of freshman college students and the five Cs of positive youth development: competence, confidence, connection, character, and …

Educational Achievement Among Asian Children: Ethnic Differences In First Grade Math And Reading Scores, Lesley Yang Apr 2013

Educational Achievement Among Asian Children: Ethnic Differences In First Grade Math And Reading Scores, Lesley Yang

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The burgeoning Asian population in the U.S. makes it imperative to understand the factors influencing their educational attainment. The pan-ethnic category of “Asian American” overgeneralizes about diverse populations and has led to a monolithic view of Asians as high achieving students with little need for educational services. The model minority myth may be masking the drastic variation in educational attainment among ethnic Asian groups. This study uses data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study—Kindergarten Class (ECLS-K) to: (1) examine whether there are significant achievement gaps between different Asian ethnic groups in first grade and (2) analyze factors that account for …

Qualitative Meta-Analysis On Three Aspects Of The Federal Budget: The Process, Politics And Policies, Morgan B. (Hittinger) Weiss Apr 2013

Qualitative Meta-Analysis On Three Aspects Of The Federal Budget: The Process, Politics And Policies, Morgan B. (Hittinger) Weiss

Selected Honors Theses

Over the last few years, policymakers and the media have paid special attention to the federal budget, deficits and the national debt as the recent recession plunged the nation into the red. In response, some called for fiscal tightening while others simultaneously advocated for further stimulus spending to accelerate the recovery. Beyond the debate on how to respond to the short-term deficits caused by the recession and a sluggish recovery are discussions of looming budgetary struggles. The medium to long-term budget concerns are driven primarily by the United States’ rapidly aging society and rising health care costs. These two factors …

An Exploration Of The Reconciliation Model At The Max Rayne School In Jerusalem, Israel; The Cycle Of Victimization, Structural Discrimination And Nationalistic Abuse, Familial Socialization And Psychological Trauma Of Children In Relationship To Israeli-Palestinian Context, Amelia A. Sampat

Selected Honors Theses

The ongoing conflict between the Israeli and Palestinian people of present-day Israel has led to the development of reconciliation processes that influence the psyche of young Israeli and Palestinian children (Zembylas, 2007). A problem arises when these processes require a lengthy period of time. In doing so, the extended process can maintain the political status quo and thereby perpetuate a cycle of victimization, structural discrimination and nationalistic abuse, in addition to familial socialization and psychological trauma. This study explores how the reconciliation methods of the Hand-in-Hand bilingual model at the Max Rayne School in Jerusalem, Israel either perpetuate or work …

Who Uses This Stuff, Anyway? An Investigation Of Who Uses The Digitalcommons@Usu, Andrew Wesolek

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Much professional literature is devoted to developing content and faculty buy-in for institutional repositories. However, little is known about the end users of these repositories. The Utah State University Institutional Repository (IR) has reached a stage of maturity in which it is necessary to begin shifting our efforts from encouraging faculty buy-in to understanding our end-users and their needs. This presentation focused on: 1. how USU’s IR reached its mature stage, 2. the results of a brief survey of the end users of our repository, and 3. how these results have informed the further development of our IR.

Between North And South: The Eu-Acp Migration Relationship, Jonathan Crush Apr 2013

Between North And South: The Eu-Acp Migration Relationship, Jonathan Crush

Southern African Migration Programme

Before the turn of the century, international migration had an extremely low profile on the global development agenda. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), for example, make no mention at all of international migration. Although a number of studies have attempted to “mainstream” migration into the MDGs after the fact, it is still largely ignored in official assessments of progress made towards them (Usher, 2005; Crush and Frayne 2007; Skeldon, 2008). According to the United Nations (UN), the silence surrounding migration in the MDGs was because it was too divisive and sensitive an issue between developed and developing countries (United Nations …

The Puerto Rican Colonial Matrix: The Etiology Of Citizenship, Pedro Caban Apr 2013

The Puerto Rican Colonial Matrix: The Etiology Of Citizenship, Pedro Caban

Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship

The extension of U.S. citizenship to Puerto Rico has been the object of voluminous scholarly and legal research. The present essay serves as both an introduction to and analysis of the four articles that comprise this special issue of CENTRO Journal. Each of the articles employs a different analytical lens to focus on the intersecting dimensions of citizenship, colonialism, and empire. The essay identifies common themes among the articles with the aim of presenting a unified narrative of the individual contributions. It historicizes the study of Puerto Rican citizenship status by reviewing the modalities of political exclusion the U.S. practiced …

A Historical And Analytical Study Of Feminization In The Field Of Public Relations, Taylor U. (Flumerfelt) Beatty Apr 2013

A Historical And Analytical Study Of Feminization In The Field Of Public Relations, Taylor U. (Flumerfelt) Beatty

Selected Honors Theses

The origin of the public relations field can be traced back more than 1,000 years. The use of its basic concepts can be seen throughout history, and increased in the 19th and 20th centuries. Until the mid-1900s, the field was largely comprised of men. World War II spurred the beginning of the feminization process, which caused public relations to experience a large influx of women. The number of female practitioners has since continued to increase. Even though feminization occurred and the field is now largely female-dominated, female practitioners experience a wide variety of gender inequalities in social, professional and economic …

A Decision Support System For Developing The Managerial Policy Of Urban Paratransit Services: A Case Study Of The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, Emanuel Melachrinoudis, Hokey Min, Candace Selneck Apr 2013

A Decision Support System For Developing The Managerial Policy Of Urban Paratransit Services: A Case Study Of The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, Emanuel Melachrinoudis, Hokey Min, Candace Selneck

Journal of Transportation Management

In the wake of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, paratransit services were offered to improve mobility, employment opportunities, and access to community services for individuals who are mentally or physically handicapped. Due to the complexity involved in ADA rules and transportation regulations as well as the customized, on-demand service requirements, paratransit services are far more costly to render than fixed-route based mass transit services. In times of ongoing budget crisis among public entities, many public transit authorities cope with a dilemma of meeting the growing demand and complex service requirements, while controlling rising paratransit costs. Considering this …

The Relationships Of Sleep Quality, Length, And Napping To Physical Performance, Rebecca M. Hoffmann Apr 2013

The Relationships Of Sleep Quality, Length, And Napping To Physical Performance, Rebecca M. Hoffmann

Doctoral Dissertations

College students suffer from more sleep disturbances than the general population. Sleep difficulties can lead to lower levels of performance, memory, and cognitive ability. Sleep quality is known to impact individuals' physical and psychological health. The relationship between sleep variables (i.e., sleep quality, sleep length, sleepiness, and a nap/relaxation) and physical performance (i.e., flexibility, grip strength, and peak performance) has not been fully examined. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between sleep quality, sleep length, and sleepiness and physical performance (e.g., flexibility, grip strength, and peak power), as well as to determine if a short nap …

The objective of this study was to contribute to the existing literature on international selection practices, specifically looking at selection of indigenous students in the Amazon region of Ecuador for admission into an eco-tourism focused high school. Selection criteria used in the study were based on current best practices in international selection. This study looked at the predictors of dependability, resilience, stability, sales-drive and student connectedness as they related to the success of the current student population at the school. Sixty-three current students at the Yachana Technical High School completed a traits based survey measuring dependability, resilience, stability, sales drive …

Scotland has one of the most uneven land ownership patterns in the world. In a country of 5.2 million people, about 969 people control 60% of the land. Over 20% of privately owned land in Scotland is held in some form of offshore or beneficial ownership (Committee on the Inquiry of Crofting, 2008). This land ownership pattern has a unique expression in the northern and western parts of the Scottish Highlands and Islands with a 300-year-old system of tenant farmers known as crofters. Unlike other tenant farmers across the world, crofters have gained legal rights to stay on the land …

Citizenship Status And Patterns Of Inequality In The United States And Canada, Sofya Aptekar

Publications and Research

Objective: This study investigates inequalities in the distribution of citizenship status among immigrants in Canada and the US between 1970 and 2001. It is motivated by a desire to probe deeper into the gap in citizenship rates between the two countries.

Methods: Logistic regression analysis of Census data is used to predict the odds of citizenship among the foreign-born, controlling for a range of factors.

Results: There has been a growing inequality in the distribution of citizenship in the US, but not in Canada. Low rates of citizenship hide the appearance of a large disparity in citizenship …

Measuring Maladaptive Perfectionism, Joanna Burton, Amber Veazey, Melissa Tingey, Kat Green Apr 2013

Measuring Maladaptive Perfectionism, Joanna Burton, Amber Veazey, Melissa Tingey, Kat Green

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Perfectionism is a personality trait in which individuals set high standards for themselves that are in line with an ideal image of how they should look, act, and perform. Perfectionism can be both adaptive and maladaptive. Identifying maladaptive perfectionism may aid individuals in consciously overcoming the negative side effects associated with maladaptive perfectionism and help individuals practice an adaptive perfectionism. We hypothesized that our measure, the Maladaptive or Adaptive Personality Scale (MAPS) would reliably and validly indicate and measure the presence of maladaptive perfectionism. Our measure used ten 4-point Likert scale questions measuring behavioral and emotional manifestations of perfectionism. MAPS …
