Psychological Factors, Health Care Knowledge, And Experiences And How They Impact Students’ Illness Behaviors On A Rural Campus, Elizabeth Pappenfus, Chelsea Walsh
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2013
When entering college, most students go through critical transitional and developmental stages into adulthood (Montgomery & Cote, 2003). Therefore, it is necessary that college students use health care appropriately and maintain a good health status by exhibiting positive illness behaviors. Illness behavior is defined as the manner in which a person monitors their body, interprets their symptoms, and how they react to those symptoms. In the current study, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) (Ajzen, 1985) model, which combines attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived control in order to predict health decision-making behavior, was used. In this study, we examined the …

Jobs Don’T Grow On Trees, Nicholas Johnson
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2013
Most contemporary macroeconomic models account for unemployment by making the simplifying assumptions that 1) there is an equilibrium level of unemployment and that 2) when the economy is not at that level it will tend towards equilibrium. Implicit in these models is also the assumption that the actual behavior of unemployment does not affect the equilibrium level. This paper joins a growing number of economists pointing out that such assumptions are false: the equilibrium does depend on past behavior, a trait called hysteresis. This paper considers the hysteresis hypothesis by using an iterated version of OLS to construct a series …

A Pilot Using Overdrive: E-Lending In Academic Law Libraries, Nina E. Scholtz
Cornell Law Librarians' Publications
E-books are not just for popular reading; legal publishers are entering the e-book market as well. Major publishers are launching e-book platforms and offering law libraries the opportunity to purchase both individual titles and collections of electronic books that they also offer in print. With increasing signs of a strong future for e-books, and possibly for e-lending as well, in spring 2012 Cornell Law Library decided to pilot OverDrive for the Cornell Law School community. By embarking on a pilot of the OverDrive service, we could test the waters of e-lending in a cost-efficient way that would not be prohibitive …

Blowin' In The Wind: Short-Term Weather And Belief In Anthropogenic Climate Change., Lawrence C. Hamilton, Mary D. Stampone
Sociology
Abstract
A series of polls provides new tests for how weather influences public beliefs about climate change. Statewide data from 5000 random-sample telephone interviews conducted on 99 days over 2.5 yr (2010-12) are merged with temperature and precipitation indicators derived from U.S. Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) station records. The surveys carry a question designed around scientific consensus statements that climate change is happening now, caused mainly by human activities. Alternatively, respondents can state that climate change is not happening, or that it is happening but mainly for natural reasons. Belief that humans are changing the climate is predicted by temperature …
Assessing Change In A Personality Profile, Jonathan S. Gore, Susan M. Cross, Daniel W. Russell
Assessing Change In A Personality Profile, Jonathan S. Gore, Susan M. Cross, Daniel W. Russell
Psychology Faculty and Staff Research
We tested the validity of 6 methods (mean difference, variance difference, bivariate, profile agreement, pattern similarity, and intraclass) to assess change in a personality profile. During their first 2 months of college, 372 students completed reactive and spontaneous measures of their personality. Eight weeks later, 300 returned to complete a second set of the same measures and noted change in their spontaneous personality list. Sixty participants returned during their second semester to complete a third set of assessments. The bivariate and intraclass change coefficients showed consistent convergent, discriminant, and concurrent validity across time points. Recommendations and caveats for using these …

Review Of The Book Those Girls: Single Women In Sixties And Seventies Popular Culture, By Katerine J. Lehman, Candi Carter Olsen
Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications
Katherine J. Lehman's Those Girls: Single Women in Sixties and Seventies Popular Culture explores the ways that unmarried women were portrayed in TV shows and movies of the era and relates those portrayals to the period's quickly changing attitudes toward female sexuality and independence. Lehman's thought-provoking original research shows how Hollywood and 1960s and 1970s public opinion worked symbiotically to expand female roles while also binding women to traditional images.

The Challenges Of Minority, Non-Affluent Students: Perceptions Of The Transitions To College, Justin Gilliam
Social Work Theses
This study explored whether low income minority students at a predominantly White institution felt socially, financially, and academically prepared for college. A review of the literature revealed that the supports necessary for low income minority students to ensure a positive transition to college are their family members, staff members at their high school, mentors, and college preparation programs. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted through interviewing eight participants who fit this study’s definition of a low income minority. The findings from this study revealed that family members, mentors, staff members at their high school, and college preparation programs were supports …

Diffusion Of Mobile Payment Systems Among Microentrepreneurs In Kenya And Tanzania, Dionne Nickerson
Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity
The rapid rise of Kenya's mobile payment system, M-PESA , has grasped the attention of policy makers and private enterprise alike. In just six years M-PESA has transformed how money flows throughout Kenya, and similar systems are gaining traction elsewhere in Africa. This project examines the impact of mobile payment system adoption on the economic advancement of Kenyan and Tanzanian microentrepreneurs. This work will further the understanding of mobile payment systems’ contribution to the economic growth of microenterprises, which may have implications for poverty reduction in these two nations.
Female Students’ Perceptions Of Sexual Victimization In The College Environment, Nicole Sadoski
Female Students’ Perceptions Of Sexual Victimization In The College Environment, Nicole Sadoski
Social Work Theses
Research indicates that sexual victimization is a significant problem on college campuses in the United States. Ranging from unwanted sexual contact to rape, sexual victimization of female students is not only a pervasive issue in the college environment, but it also may lead to devastating short- and long-term consequences for survivors, including physical, psychological, and emotional implications. In an effort to better understand the scope of this issue, the researcher attempted to conduct a comprehensive study about female students’ perceptions of sexual victimization at a mid-size, Northeastern, Catholic, liberal arts college. Participants’ recommendations for ways in which colleges can educate …

A Unique Approach Against Child Sex Offenders: Jefferson County "Cheezo" Unit The Model For Success?, Sonia R. Chavez
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Online crimes against children are a daunting problem facing law enforcement today. The Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force reported 76,961 complaints in 2010-2011. The purpose of this study was to describe the unique approach of the Jefferson County Child Sex Offender Internet Investigations (CSOII, nicknamed "Cheezo") Unit, analyze the arrest data of Cheezo, and determine if Cheezo could be used as a best methods approach against this problem. A demographic study was conducted on the Cheezo arrest data, as well as comparison analysis of arrest totals, prosecution rates, and educational presentations provided to the community. Comparisons were conducted …
A Grammatical Paradigm, Alexia Polacheck
A Grammatical Paradigm, Alexia Polacheck
Spring 2013, Kuhn's Philosophy of Science
Avram Noam Chomsky is known for his work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for his political pursuits, and most importantly, for his theories in the discipline of linguistics. Chomsky linguistic pursuits aimed to answer the following linguistic studies: how a person learns and develops a language, how a person structures and understands a sentence, and what the purpose of linguistics is as a whole. His theories dramatically changed the linguistic paradigm. Due to this change, this paper also attempts to illustrate the correlation between scientific philosopher Thomas Kuhn’s belief in ‘paradigm shifts’ and the subsequent change in linguistic thought spurred …
Obstacles In Human Service Work With Teen Mothers, Chloe Casale
Obstacles In Human Service Work With Teen Mothers, Chloe Casale
Social Work Theses
Research has shown that it is extremely beneficial for teen mothers to have support during their pregnancy and during their new experience of motherhood. Teen mothers can be extremely vulnerable because of the many obstacles they may face including unhealthy relationships, lack of education attainment, mental health concerns, and isolation. One source of support can come from human service workers. In an effort to better understand the obstacles faced by teen mothers, and thus the obstacles faced by home visitors, this study focused on the stories, opinions, and experiences of those who are working with teen mothers in a home …
The Effects Of Advertising And The Media’S Portrayal Of The “Thin Ideal” On College Women’S Self-Image, Mary Sheehan
The Effects Of Advertising And The Media’S Portrayal Of The “Thin Ideal” On College Women’S Self-Image, Mary Sheehan
Social Work Theses
This study explores the relationship between media images’ portrayal of the “thin ideal” and college women’s self-image and self-esteem. A review of the literature validated the researcher’s hypothesis that women are negatively affected by the media’s portrayal of “ideal” body types. However, the review of literature also presented a contrasting theme that media images can positively affect women through motivation and determination to maintain healthy lifestyles. A mixed methods study using Rosenberg’s Self Esteem Scale and media images portraying different body types was used to examine this relationship. Findings indicated that the level of the women’s self-esteem prior to completing …

Learning occurs everywhere. Jernstadt (2004) suggests learning occurs on a continuum comprised of knowledge, recognition, application, and extrapolation (as cited in Keeling, 2006). “In our need to put things into categories, we have classified some parts of higher education as curricular, and other parts as co-curricular, but students just call it college” (Keeling & Associates, 2006, p. vii). Learning Reconsidered argued for the integrated use of higher education’s resources in the education and preparation of the whole student. One of the most critical elements required to accomplish this was the creation or enhancement of strong, collaborative working relationships among …

Letter From The Executive Director: An Accidental Protester, James Wilson
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
This past January, I spent a cold, wet, and fabulous week in Paris. One evening while strolling along the Left Bank, sauntering in the shadows of the imposing grandeur of L’Hôtel national des Invalides, I found myself caught up in a massive wave of protesters, who were dispersing from a demonstration in front of the Eiffel Tower. The crowd moved like a protean organism through the narrow Parisian streets, growing in immensity as other protest groups siphoned into the throng from criss-crossing thoroughfares.
Random Ramblings - Patron-Driven Acquisitions, Ebooks, And Economic Self-Interest, Robert P. Holley
Random Ramblings - Patron-Driven Acquisitions, Ebooks, And Economic Self-Interest, Robert P. Holley
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
What is the appropriate role of economic self-interest in collection development? The quick answer most likely depends upon your type of library. Patron-Driven Acquisitions (PDA) is based upon the premise that academic libraries should focus their purchases upon materials immediately needed by their users in these times of economic stress. The availability of digital resources, print-on-demand, and the out-of- print book market makes it possible to acquire most materials just-in-time rather than the old model of stockpiling resources just-in-case. While this model reduces the number of current purchases, the advocates of PDA contend that they are not responsible for the …
Mental Health And Gun Control Briefing Report, Harris Rollinger
Mental Health And Gun Control Briefing Report, Harris Rollinger
Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise
The issue of gun control has once again become a highly contested issue in the United States after the most recent mass shootings at a movie theatre in Aurora, CO, a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, a mall in Portland, OR, and involving Representative Gabby Giffords in Arizona. However, it was not until the horrific tragedy in Newtown, CT, where 20 children and 6 adult staff members were fatally shot at Sandy Hook Elementary School, that the gun control debate reached its peak.
