Attitudes Toward Science (Ats): An Examination Of Scientists' And Native Americans' Cultural Values And Ats And Their Effect On Action Priorities, Adam T. Murry

Dissertations and Theses

Science has been identified as a crucial element in the competitiveness and sustainability of America in the global economy. American citizens, especially minority populations, however, are not pursuing science education or careers. Past research has implicated `attitudes toward science' as an important factor in the public's participation in science. I applied Ajzen's (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior to attitudes toward science to predict science-related sustainability-action intentions and evaluated whether scientists and Native Americans differed in their general attitudes toward science, cultural values, and specific beliefs about science. Analyses revealed that positive attitude toward science and the cultural value of individualism …

Shared Leadership In Dangerous Environments: Testing A Model For Military Teams Using Mixed Methods Research, Alex J. Ramthun

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In a field study, the dissertation examined the influence of shared leadership on team performance for 51 military combat teams in a simulated dangerous environment. To simulate the dangerous context, the study employed amilitary tactical urban fighting complex, paintball weapons, role players, and a dynamic combat scenario. Using social network analysis techniques and after controlling for team diversity and combat experience, the study found the density measure of shared leadership to be positively and significantly related to team performance, accounting for 40% of the variance in team performance. This research also found both the centralization measure and density/centralization interaction effect …

Portraying Sense Of Community Through Communication: How To Maximize The Benefit Of Social Media For A Community Agency, Julia Walter Apr 2013

Portraying Sense Of Community Through Communication: How To Maximize The Benefit Of Social Media For A Community Agency, Julia Walter

Honors Theses

Perceptions of social media networks are changing rapidly. Their purpose, function, effectiveness, and relevance are being widely debated while their global popularity and societal influence escalate. While individuals used the networks to share, manage, and change their personal lives, organizations jumped at the chance to benefit from low-cost public relations, advertising, and market research. Many organizations speedily adjusted their communication strategies to access these low-cost resources. Due to historical marginalization many nonprofit community agencies were slower to integrate this new media costing them the opportunity to compete for audience attention on level with the private industry. Neglecting to integrate these …

Examining The Effects Of A Mirror On Imitation In Children With Autism, Chelsea Vanderwoude Apr 2013

Examining The Effects Of A Mirror On Imitation In Children With Autism, Chelsea Vanderwoude

Honors Theses

Those with autism often show deficits in imitation skills (Freitag, Kleser, & Gontardf, 2006; Killen & Uzgiris, 1981; Rogers, Bennetto, McEvoy, & Pennington, 1996; Stone, Ousley, & littleford, 1997). Previous research has suggested that imitation is a prerequisite for major developmental milestones including social communication skills. Past studies have shown Video Modeling to be an effective intervention for teaching imitation skills, especially Video Self Modeling (VSM). However, VSM can cost researchers a great deal of time and resources. The purpose of this study is to find a new intervention that applies the mechanisms of VSM, while expanding on past research. …

Female Career Progression & Maternity Leave: An Irish Exploration, Collette O'Connor, Angela Wright Apr 2013

Female Career Progression & Maternity Leave: An Irish Exploration, Collette O'Connor, Angela Wright

Dept. of Organisation & Professional Development Publications

The persistent existence of the 'gender pay gap' in organisations, and the lack of females at executive level position in Ireland due to motherhood is the context for this paper. In particular, this study seeks to investigate why women's careers are impacted by childbearing. The study investigates if there is a correlation between taking maternity leave, and women's career progression in the work place. The increasing length of maternity leave benefits and flexible work arrangements results in elongated absence of females from the workplace. This leads to stereotypical role emergence by both men and women. Women take on the main …

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This presentation focuses on attempts at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) to develop a meaningful partnership between the five libraries and the Disability Unit, in order to reconstruct and enrich the academic experience of students with disabilities. CPUT hosts a variety of students from different countries, cultures, economic and social backgrounds, including a number of students with disabilities. In the past, students with disabilities could often not participate fully in academic and student life, due to a context of discrimination, inequity and even inhumanity. They experienced a sense of exclusion, and had the perception that they were not …

The Embedded Library: A Marriage Made In Heaven Or In Hell?, Glenda Myers, Trish Warner

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This case study covers a number of areas in which a 90 year old medical library has been able to redefine purpose and services, and considers both the positive as well as the negative aspects of the embedded relationship.

According to the Shumaker assessment of readiness for embeddedness, the Witwatersrand Health Sciences Library (WHSL) and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand were more than ready to embrace a partnership by 2010. A survey indicated that a high proportion (93.5%) of academic staff felt that evidence-based information literacy (IL) should be included in the formal medical …

A Collaborative Partnership: Libraries And Careers Services, Cyrill Walters, D Casey Apr 2013

A Collaborative Partnership: Libraries And Careers Services, Cyrill Walters, D Casey

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Globally, universities are rethinking traditional models of service delivery to better serve the new generation of students entering our campuses.

Academic libraries are evolving from their traditional passive role as information repositories to proactive participants in the academic enterprise. However, student support divisions, in this case, UCT Careers Service, are often overlooked as areas in need of library liaison and possible collaboration.

Historically there had been no relationship between UCT Libraries and the Careers Service; neither informal nor infrequent interaction occurred. A new Director was appointed to the UCT Careers Service in 2011. Faced with the task of aligning service …

Towards A Holistic Analysis Tool To Support Decision-Making In Libraries, Lorena Siguenza-Guzman, Ludo Holans, Alexandra Van Den Abbeele, Joos Vandewalle, Henri Verhaaren, Dirk Cattrysse

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Academic libraries have recently been subjected to continuous budget reductions, mainly due to the increasing costs of information and the global economic crisis. As the primary purpose of an academic library is to provide well-balanced collections and a wide range of services to support education and research, an efficient use and allocation of limited resources is vital. However, allocating resources such as money, staff, time, and infrastructure between the library collection and services represents a challenge due to the multitude of data sources required to consult during a decision-making process.

Academic libraries are accustomed to keeping voluminous statistics on their …

Gender Differences In Frontal Plane Lower Extremity Kinetic Variability During Landing, Andrew Nordin Apr 2013

Gender Differences In Frontal Plane Lower Extremity Kinetic Variability During Landing, Andrew Nordin

Interdisciplinary Research Scholarship Day

Investigations of human movement variability have been used as a
means of exploring neuromotor functioning, where performance variability is
thought to provide the system with flexibility and a mechanism for adaptation to
movement repetition [1,2,4,6]. Operationally, variability has been considered to
fall within optimal limits (Figure 1), while excessively high or low variability has
been implicated in injury susceptibility [1,2,4,6]. Landing has been explored
due to a high incidence of injury in athletic performance, as well as the ability
to easily control task demands through increases in landing height [3,4].
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate changes in …

From Cornerstone To Capstone: Information Literacy Collaboration Across The Curriculum, Fiona Salisbury, Jenny Corbin, Tai Peseta

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Librarians and academics alike are passionate about how students engage with scholarly information. We want students to build on their existing information literacy skills when they commence university and to graduate with the information skills needed for lifelong learning in their chosen profession and society at large. Collaboration between librarians and academics to embed information literacy into curriculum design is a key strategy for developing students’ information skills. But what impact does our collaborative effort have on student learning outcomes and long-term information seeking behaviour? Are our graduates information literate and ready for a complex information society?

At Latrobe University …

Strategies For Gaining And Maintaining Academic Support For The Institutional Open Access Repository, Martin Borchert, Paula Callan

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The impact of research can be measured by use or citation count. The more widely available that research outputs are; the more likely they are to be used, and the higher the impact. Making the author-manuscript version of research outputs freely available via the institutional repository greatly increases the availability of research outputs and can increase the impact.

QUT ePrints, the open access institutional repository of research outputs at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia, was established in 2003 and is managed by the QUT Library. The repository now contains over 39,000 records. More than 21,000 of these records have …

Getting In Bed With Our Customers: How Did We Embed Our Services To Push The Library Mission At Vaal University Of Technology, Ntombizodwa G. Thomas

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Emerging trends in technology have changed the academic libraries’ landscape and services. These changes will forever impact and influence how libraries conduct their businesses to satisfy the most important people in their lives; that is; the customers we serve, especially in academic libraries.

In the 21st century waiting for customers to come to the libraries to is no longer working and is also no longer relevant. Getting out of our comfort zones, getting close to our clients, invading their space when they least expect and getting in bed with those customers to satisfy their information needs is now a …
