Las Abuelas E La Memoria, Doris Cristobal Apr 2013

Las Abuelas E La Memoria, Doris Cristobal

Archives of an Activist: Celebrating the Donations of Rita Arditti to UMass Boston

Remarks By Ann Blum About Rita Arditti, The Abuelas, And Latin American Studies, Ann Blum

Archives of an Activist: Celebrating the Donations of Rita Arditti to UMass Boston

From Ann Blum's remarks:

My own area of research is family history. Students and other scholars sometimes ask me why I study the family when there are other far more important, more politicaltopics. Rita’s activism and scholarship provide a ringing rejoinder. The family is political and it is key to our understanding of politics on intimate, national and global scales. Rita’swork with the Grandmothers centered on family. Her study embraced the complex interactions among three generations as family relations were projected onto national and international politics. The Argentine military regime was brutally astute: they made state terrorism a family affair. …

Beware Of What You Watch: Television Viewing And Dating Behavior In Young Adults, Michael Milmine

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

People of all ages are spending significant portions of their day watching television. Television shows themed around romantic relationships are very common and popular among young adults. This study examined relationships between television viewing and dating behavior in a sample of students at a small religious university in southeast Tennessee. Forty-seven participants completed the Milmine Social Interaction and Media Instrument (MSIAMI) which measures television viewing. Results show statistically weak relationships between television viewing and lower expectations, less physical touch, lower satisfaction, and shorter dating relationships. Television viewing was related to a slightly higher frequency of kissing within the dating relationship. …

The Metaphor Of Marriage In Hosea, Leif Fredheim Apr 2013

The Metaphor Of Marriage In Hosea, Leif Fredheim

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

"Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord” (Hosea 1:2). The message of Hosea is provocative. For this very reason, the biblical book of Hosea has frustrated and intrigued scholars for over two millennia. Scholarly debate has raged due to the implications the text has for the character of God and His prophet, and the ways in which God interacts with His people. It cannot, however, be claimed that the discussion has been concluded; “from centuries of critical debate only one consensus on the …

The researcher conducted three focus groups based on class standings of senior, junior, and sophomore. Each group had six to nine randomly and purposively selected participants. Results showed that the people, the place, and the purpose of the school were significant to the students, and the students’ definition of …

The Impact Of Media Exposure On Self-Esteem And Body Satisfaction In Men And Women, Salenna Russello

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

The current study explored the effects of media exposure on men and women's body satisfaction, self-esteem, level of internalization of sociocultural ideals, and level of social comparison. Male and female undergraduates (N = 32) were exposed to television advertisements either with muscular men and thin women (sociocultural ideal group) or without those types of men and women (neutral advertisement group). Men were more satisfied with their bodies than women, and they internalized ideals less. Self-esteem and social comparison levels were similar for both men and women. In addition, exposure to physical-ideal advertisements did not appear to effect body satisfaction, self-esteem, …

Of Mice And Men: A Comparative Study Assessing Behavioral Indicators Of Sugar Addiction In Mice And College Students, Kahlilia Morris

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

Binge eating is a maladaptive behavior associated with obesity and certain eating disorders. Numerous animal studies have shown that this bingeing behavior shares qualities with those of drug addiction. Furthermore, research in rodents has shown that this addictive behavior is also characterized by the same molecular and physiological characteristics that define drug addiction. The current study purposed to assess whether bingeing on sugar could lead to behavioral indicators of sugar dependence in mice as well as humans. The results show that bingeing on sugar did not increase addictive behavior in either mice or human participants. Instead, addictive behaviors appeared to …

Choosing Sides: The Gender Dilemma, Center For Public Service Apr 2013

Choosing Sides: The Gender Dilemma, Center For Public Service

SURGE

“You can’t check a box between male and female; you are either a boy or a girl.”

My professor makes this statement often. It is pretty easy to see why he would use gender in this example: he is trying to give us a simple, understandable explanation of a binary. When explaining the binary, he just wants to show that it is a two-option classification: from his experience, male and female fits. [excerpt]

Glorious Revolution As Financial Revolution, John David Angle Apr 2013

Glorious Revolution As Financial Revolution, John David Angle

History Faculty Publications

Conventionally appreciated as simply a religious and political event, this paper presents a re-appraisal of the Glorious Revolution based on the economic and commercial motivations. Scholarship has long accepted the narrative that the revolution was prompted by religious concerns, however this fails to fully examine the economic conditions of the time and the interests of the so-called "Immortal Seven." The paper then examines the financial reforms wrought by William III, including the establishment of the Bank of England, creation of a national debt, and resolution of the Currency Crisis. Ultimately this paper places the Glorious Revolution into its proper economic …

Understanding The Public's Attitudes Toward Tissue Donation: A Multi-Method Approach, Lindsey Kurland Apr 2013

Understanding The Public's Attitudes Toward Tissue Donation: A Multi-Method Approach, Lindsey Kurland

Theses and Dissertations

The impact of deceased tissue donation and transplantation is far-reaching; however, little is known about the public’s attitudes towards tissue donation. Siminoff, Traino, and Gordon (2010) found that families’ attitudes towards tissue donation were a significant predictor of consent; specifically, families that were initially favorable towards tissue donation were more likely to donate their loved ones tissues than families that were initially unfavorable towards tissue donation. Using a qualitative coding approach and the Tripartite Model of Attitude Structure (affective, behavioral, and cognitive attitude components) as a conceptual framework, families’ expressed attitudes toward tissue donation were extracted from N=240 audiorecordings of …

Warning Signs: A Study In The Proximate Causes Of Genocide, Bradley Ryktarsyk Apr 2013

Warning Signs: A Study In The Proximate Causes Of Genocide, Bradley Ryktarsyk

Honors Theses

This paper analyzes the cases of genocide in Bosnia and Rwanda as well as the humanitarian interventions in Kosovo and Libya to study the proximate causes of genocide. Proximate cause, defined as any event or condition, leading directly, or indirectly, to genocide, or the intervention by foreign powers, occurring within the immediate generation preceding the genocidal acts, or perceived threat thereof, is herein explored through Gregory Stanton’s “Eight Stages of Genocide” (1996). “The Eight Stages of Genocide” allows these cases to be examined through a preexisting, though imperfect, framework which compartmentalizes the process of genocide into stages allowing for analysis …

Inclusive Business: Using For-Profit Business Models To Address Global Poverty, Samuel James Conner Apr 2013

Inclusive Business: Using For-Profit Business Models To Address Global Poverty, Samuel James Conner

Senior Honors Theses

Due to the rise of globalization, modernization, and the Internet revolution, awareness of global poverty has expanded, making its eradication a chief goal of the global development community for the twenty-first century. Though corporations are often expected to participate in social and community development initiatives without regard for profits, this paper presents inclusive business as a way for businesses to profitably engage impoverished segments of society. Inclusive businesses seek to expand their consumer bases or strengthen their supply chains by moving into new markets among the poor that have limited access to global markets and remain largely untapped. The research …
