Restoring Right Relationships: Restorative Justice And Post-Conflict States, Danielle Mueller Apr 2013

Restoring Right Relationships: Restorative Justice And Post-Conflict States, Danielle Mueller

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

A view has developed among peace and conflict scholars that peace cannot persist in post-conflict societies without also establishing justice. This means peace scholars and practitioners need to think about justice and use a conception of justice to guide their peacemaking actions. However, even though most people have an intuitive assumption that "justice" is an obvious and commonly understood concept, there are conflicting conceptions of justice. Many adopt a Kantian position on justice and assume it is synonymous with retribution. However, retribution is not the only conception of justice. In this project, I argue that the conception of retributive justice …

Changes In Indiana Water Usage Rates Related To Population From 1990-2005, Using Gis Analysis, Alexandra Olson Apr 2013

Changes In Indiana Water Usage Rates Related To Population From 1990-2005, Using Gis Analysis, Alexandra Olson

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Water is arguably our most important resource and the issue of its sustainability arises with our ever expanding population. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has five accessible data sets on their website regarding the water usage rates of each county in Indiana from 1985 to 2005. It does not provide any comparison among these years or display any maps regarding this data. Because this analysis is missing, I will focus on the correlation between water usage rates and population averages in each county of Indiana during the same years. I will then create a series of maps that display this …

Facilitating Positive Reactions To Psychological Labels, Stephanie Kuipers Apr 2013

Facilitating Positive Reactions To Psychological Labels, Stephanie Kuipers

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Receiving a psychological label is often a life-changing experience. Some people feel relieved and hopeful upon discovering a name for their problem, while others become scared and depressed about the implications of receiving such a label (Proudfoot et al., 2009). This study attempts to identify factors that may affect whether a client has a positive or negative reaction to psychological labeling. Specifically, three factors were examined: use of language, client personality, and type of diagnosis. Each participant was randomly assigned to read one of four short narratives in which they imagined themselves in the depicted situation. All narratives portrayed someone …

A Linear Regression Analysis For Understanding High School Grade Point Average (Gpa), Christine Warner Apr 2013

A Linear Regression Analysis For Understanding High School Grade Point Average (Gpa), Christine Warner

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This project analyzes different aspects that may contribute to the grade point average (GPA) of high school students. GPA is important because it is one of the fundamental measures of student success. I gathered data on 206 individuals from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997-2010. I selected variables for the regression analysis from categories including general motivation for success and optimism; use of time; other academic measures; and health habits and lifestyle. Using SPSS to run the regressions, I found that variables that I believed most related to GPA – such as amount of sleep, …

Watts Up With That: Comparing Wind Farms In Texas And California While Explaining Why Farm Quantity Does Not Overcome Wind Quality, Alexandra Thompson Apr 2013

Watts Up With That: Comparing Wind Farms In Texas And California While Explaining Why Farm Quantity Does Not Overcome Wind Quality, Alexandra Thompson

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Since the 1980s, California has been the leader in wind energy for the United States. In 2004, wind energy produced 1.5 percent of the state’s electricity. That is 4,258 x 108 kilowatt hours per year. The California wind farms producing the most energy are located in three regions: Altamont Pass, Tehachapi, and San Gorgonio. Research for California will be focused on the southern part of the state – the regions of Tehachapi and San Gorgonio. Presently, California has five major wind farms. This project will examine the major wind farms in both Texas and California. California was in the number …

Integrated Communication: Perceptions Among The Fields Of Marketing, Public Relations, And Journalism, Becca Mercola, Alec Johnson, Rachel Abbinante

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The literature indicates the importance of the public relations, marketing, and journalism disciplines being aware of the professional demands of each area. An analysis of student perceptions from each discipline about the other disciplines reveals the need to do more of an integrated approach in the teaching domain. A research instrument surveyed classes in public relations/journalism and marketing/management in the College of Business and the Communication Department.

The Biomechanics Of Spear Throwing: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Anatomical Variation On Throwing Performance, With Implications For The Fossil Record, Julia Marie Maki Apr 2013

The Biomechanics Of Spear Throwing: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Anatomical Variation On Throwing Performance, With Implications For The Fossil Record, Julia Marie Maki

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Accurate, high velocity throwing is a skill unique to humans among living species. It likely provided an adaptive advantage for our hominin ancestors, either in the context of hunting, or protection from predators. Thus, understanding how variation in body form and anatomy influences throwing ability may provide insight into the evolution of human morphology. Research has been done on various forms of ball and javelin throwing, yet the biomechanics of spear throwing were completely unknown. Moreover, it has been suggested that early modern humans had lesser effective mechanical advantage: EMA, the ratio of moment arm to load arm) than Neandertals, …

Growing Up Tamarin: Morphology, Reproduction, And Population Demography Of Sympatric Free-Ranging Saguinus Fuscicollis And S. Imperator, Mrinalini Watsa

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The Callitrichidae are family of small New World primates with a suite of distinctive morphological and behavioral adaptations that set them apart from other primates. Of primary interest is their reproductive system that includes compulsive twinning: ≥80% of births) and cooperative care of offspring by individuals other than biological parents: termed alloparenting). Further, hematopoietic tissues in callitrichids display signals of both self and sibling DNA, due to an exchange of stem cells early in gestation that renders twin callitrichids as cellular mosaics of each other. This phenomenon is known as genetic chimerism, which increases genetic relatedness between individuals and is …

Essays On Political Economy, Gustavo Federico Torrens Apr 2013

Essays On Political Economy, Gustavo Federico Torrens

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

“Essays on Political Economy” explores the connections between politics and economics in several different contexts. By politics, or more precisely the political game, I mean the social procedures through which collective decisions are made. By economics I mean the economic game once collective decisions have already been selected. Of particular interest are the preferences about collective decisions among agents induced by the economic game. Some of the political institutions for selecting public policies can be easily changed and, hence, should be treated themselves as endogenous collective decisions. Others are very robust. I will refer to the later group as the …

The Effect Of Positive And Negative Pictures On The Processing Of Emotion-Related Words, Tricia K. Engen Apr 2013

The Effect Of Positive And Negative Pictures On The Processing Of Emotion-Related Words, Tricia K. Engen

Psychology Student Work

In our study, we wanted to test whether negative and positive stimuli affect lexical decision tasks. The participants consisted of 30 CSB/SJU students (14 males and 16 females). The participants saw either negative or positive pictures. After rating the various pictures, the participants’ reaction times to words and non-words was recorded to see how priming affected their reactions. We hypothesized that emotional priming would make a difference in their reaction times to words of different emotions (positive and negative). The results demonstrated that there was not an interaction between the picture group the participants were assigned to and their reaction …

Four Virtues: Interventions For Goodness' Sake, Caroline Lavelock Apr 2013

Four Virtues: Interventions For Goodness' Sake, Caroline Lavelock

Theses and Dissertations

Empirical interest in promoting virtues has dramatically increased over the last decade. The present study will focus primarily on the warmth-based virtues of forgiveness and humility, and the conscientiousness-based virtues of patience and self-control. I introduced participants (N = 135) to a workbook intended to promote one of these four virtues, or to promote general positivity for participants in a workbook control condition. I hypothesized that virtue workbooks would produce higher levels of the target virtue, more so than in both a non-action control condition (n = 33) and in a control condition that completes a workbook that promotes general …

Public Participation In Transportation Planning: How Does The Level Of Engagement And Deliberation Affect Transportation Decisions In Virginia's Mpos?, Unwanna Dabney Apr 2013

Public Participation In Transportation Planning: How Does The Level Of Engagement And Deliberation Affect Transportation Decisions In Virginia's Mpos?, Unwanna Dabney

Theses and Dissertations

Federal, state and local laws entitle the public to have an active role in the transportation decision making process. However, it remains difficult to engage the public in the long range planning process. The laws requiring public involvement are intentionally vague and don’t prescribe specific approaches, so there is little consistency in public participation approaches and many state, regional, and local transportation agencies choose to do only what is necessary to meet minimum requirements (PBS&J, 2009). The purpose of this study is to examine public participation in transportation planning with specific focus on how the characteristics of public participation, the …

Disruptive Transformations In Health Care: Technological Innovation And The Acute Care General Hospital, D. Pulane Lucas Apr 2013

Disruptive Transformations In Health Care: Technological Innovation And The Acute Care General Hospital, D. Pulane Lucas

Theses and Dissertations

Advances in medical technology have altered the need for certain types of surgery to be performed in traditional inpatient hospital settings. Less invasive surgical procedures allow a growing number of medical treatments to take place on an outpatient basis. Hospitals face growing competition from ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). The competitive threats posed by ASCs are important, given that inpatient surgery has been the cornerstone of hospital services for over a century. Additional research is needed to understand how surgical volume shifts between and within acute care general hospitals (ACGHs) and ASCs. This study investigates how medical technology within the hospital …

Gender Differences In Decision Making When Faced With Multiple Options, Kallie R. Reiter Apr 2013

Gender Differences In Decision Making When Faced With Multiple Options, Kallie R. Reiter

Psychology Student Work

This study tested the gender differences in decision-making patterns when multiple options were available among college students. The researchers tested this by measuring the amount of time it took students to choose a food line to wait in at the cafeteria, predicting that males would not spend as much time observing all of the different options as females would. 116 male students and 116 female students from two separate cafeterias on two different campuses participated in the study. The researchers found that when males had formed a routine and were in their more natural environment, they were quicker to choose …
