140 Characters To Skinny: Social Support Provided By Commercial Weight-Loss Programs Via Twitter, Sarah Arbogast

All Theses

The state of healthcare in the United States is changing. Amidst this change, there is a debate as to whether health is a public good or if health is a private matter. This change and debate challenges health professionals to rethink the way we go about planning health interventions to better address the many public health issues looming the general population today. The recent rise of obesity and at-risk weight in the United States is a major epidemic that has yet to be resolved. There are many approaches to addressing weight management and for many, public health campaigns have not …

Effects Of Unemployment Insurance Extensions On Job Search Outcomes, Ailin He May 2013

Effects Of Unemployment Insurance Extensions On Job Search Outcomes, Ailin He

All Theses

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how unemployment insurance (UI) extensions affect job finding probabilities and the length of unemployment spells in the most recent decade. Exploiting the panel structure of the Current Population Survey (CPS), I constructed a 16-month panel with the CPS basic monthly data from 2002 to 2012 and modeled the reemployment (unemployment-to-employment and not-in-labor-force-to-employment) hazard. Since unemployment policies in the US are subjected to change by the condition of the macro economy, this paper adopted different approaches to distinguish UI impacts on exit probability from other macro factors. Our results suggest that UI extensions …

Organizational Communication And The Meanings Of Social Media As Cultural Mediums: A Case Study Of Intramural Sport Participants' Interpretations Of Online Presence, Madeline Blair

All Theses

This thesis analyzes the relationship between organizational communication and social media presence in organizational culture. Using a university intramural sport program (UIM) as a case study, this study addresses the role of organizational members' interpretations of the introduction of social media into organizational processes and culture. This study an attempt to reveal a disconnect between organizational communication techniques and social media as cultural mediums by offering an interpretive approach to analysis of the UIM culture using Craig and Tracy's (1995) grounded practical theory. Ten interviews with UIM student employees and sport players were conducted and data were analyzed qualitatively. Findings …

Does A Banking Crisis Reduce Foreign Direct Investment?, Eunjeong Kim May 2013

Does A Banking Crisis Reduce Foreign Direct Investment?, Eunjeong Kim

All Theses

With as much importance as Foreign Direct Investment, an enormous amount of study on the factors which might hamper Foreign Direct Investment has been done with a lot of research. Also, the impact of a crisis on FDI has been especially appealing due to the recent economic depression. However, the literature about the linkage between one of the crises, a banking crisis and FDI is sparse even though a banking crisis is highly correlated with the overall economy's damage. With data collected for 60 countries for the years 1990-2010, this paper examines the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment and a …

Tourist Intentions To Continue Poverty Alleviation Actions After Participating In Microfinance Tourism, Michelle Nance May 2013

Tourist Intentions To Continue Poverty Alleviation Actions After Participating In Microfinance Tourism, Michelle Nance

All Theses

The tourism industry has begun to incorporate microfinance into a new type of niche tourism that integrates local entrepreneurs and tourists. This type of tourism is called microfinance tourism. The study investigates the tourist role in poverty alleviation using the Theory of Planned Behavior to explore how attitude, perceived behavioral control, and social norms impact intention to continue investment and/or donation to microentrepreneurs and microfinance organizations. The study was conducted in conjunction with Investours, a non-profit organization that offers `microfinance tours' in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The study found perceived behavioral control and attitude to be …

And Baby Makes Three: A Content Analysis Of Adolescent Romantic Relationships As Portrayed On Reality Television, Erin Shealy May 2013

And Baby Makes Three: A Content Analysis Of Adolescent Romantic Relationships As Portrayed On Reality Television, Erin Shealy

All Theses

Although teenage pregnancy and birth rates have been on the decline, the United States still has rates higher than any industrialized country. With several negative consequences associated with teenage childbearing for teen mothers and their children as well as for society, teen pregnancy is a social problem. Much of the existing literature focuses on the deleterious effects of pregnancy on teen mothers, but very few studies consider the effect that the transition to parenthood has on adolescent romantic relationships. The present study seeks to fill this gap by analyzing the content of popular television series, namely 16 and Pregnant and …

A Comprehensive Study Of Happiness Among Adults In China, Yiwei Zhou

All Theses

This thesis examines determinants of people's happiness in China with a national sample of adults from the Chinese General Social Survey 2008 (CGSS). The thesis discusses the concept of happiness, introduces major theories of happiness and reviews happiness studies from both the West and China. This thesis addresses four main research questions: 1) Whether the possession of resources is an influential factor in people's happiness in China; 2) How subjective assessment of life events affects one's happiness in China; 3) Whether making comparisons (with one's past life and others) affects one's happiness in China; and 4) Whether subjective assessment of …

Empirical Study On Stock's Capital Returns Distribution And Future Performance, Han Liu May 2013

Empirical Study On Stock's Capital Returns Distribution And Future Performance, Han Liu

All Theses

Investors subject to reference dependence and mental accounting tend to make decisions based on the unrealized losses and gains relative to a reference point, and behave consistently with the disposition effect. In this paper, I focus my study on stocks' capital returns distribution, which is a distribution of each stock that represents the relative capital gains/losses of all shareholders during a target time period. Empirical evidences show the mean value and the skewness of stock's capital returns distribution play significant roles in forecasting future performance. For stocks with a negative mean value of the distribution, the only significant parameter is …

Estimate The Effect Of Police On Crime Using Electoral Data And Updated Data, Yaqi Wang May 2013

Estimate The Effect Of Police On Crime Using Electoral Data And Updated Data, Yaqi Wang

All Theses

It is surprisingly difficult to isolate causal effects of police on crime empirically due to the simultaneous determination of crime and police presence. Instruments are used to address the simultaneity concerns in the previous crime literature. The 2SLS results provide evidence indicating that additional police reduce crime. However, we might suspect whether the same instruments can generate consistent results with previous studies by using datasets of more recent years instead of thirty years ago and considering the change of policies, crime situation, and other factors. This paper use electoral cycles as instrumental variable and updated data of the 1985-2010 period …

Relationship Between Occupational Complexity And Dementia Risk In Late-Life: A Population Study, Daylee Rose Greene May 2013

Relationship Between Occupational Complexity And Dementia Risk In Late-Life: A Population Study, Daylee Rose Greene

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

According to cognitive reserve theory, challenging and/or stimulating cognitive activities can build a theoretical reserve, which may lead to a delay in the clinical expression of dementia and/or Alzheimer's disease. These cognitively stimulating activities are thought to build cognitive strategies and neural pathways that are more efficient, enabling the individual to live symptom-free for a longer period of time. One mechanism through which cognitive reserve can be built is by participating in an occupation high in cognitive complexity. When individuals hold an occupation that is high in complexity, they may build their cognitive reserve in such a manner as to …

New Mexico Tourism: Conflict And Cooperation In The Land Of Enchantment, Emily Alyce Bullington May 2013

New Mexico Tourism: Conflict And Cooperation In The Land Of Enchantment, Emily Alyce Bullington

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact that tourism and tourist sites have upon the surrounding communities in New Mexico. It will look specifically at Bandelier National Monument, El Santuario de Chimayo, and the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell. These sites have all been the cause of tensions in their interactions with the local communities, over issues of culture, identity, or resource usage. But these tourist attractions have also brought economic stimulus to these areas, which has brought about a need for cooperation and compromise between the groups as they have negotiated how tourism …

Effects Of Ergot Alkaloids And Bovine Bodily Fluids On Cytochrome P450 Activity, Nicholas Scott Ezell May 2013

Effects Of Ergot Alkaloids And Bovine Bodily Fluids On Cytochrome P450 Activity, Nicholas Scott Ezell

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis evaluates the PromegaTM P450-Glo assay (PromegaTM V9800) as a tool for quantifying ergot alkaloid concentration. Current techniques used for detection of ergot alkaloids are slow and expensive, do not detect all ergot alkaloids, or are not effective on bovine bodily fluids. The first study was conducted to determine effects of commercial ergot alkaloids (n = 6; 0 - 400 μM) on the PromegaTM P450-Glo assay. Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) activity in assay had a differential response to each ergot alkaloid and concentration. As concentrations of ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, ergocornine, and ergocryptine increased CYP450 activity was inhibited (P …

Care And Feeding: An Exploration Of How Archaeology Site Stewardship Program Volunteers And Managers Define Priorities, Britt Mcnamara

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

State and federal agencies increasingly rely on site stewardship programs to protect archaeological resources, and site stewardship programs rely on volunteers to do this work. Given the importance of volunteers to site stewardship programs, especially in the wake of budget cuts and “sequesters,” this paper asks: how do managers and volunteers define site stewardship program priorities and how do differences in their opinions impact program success? In this paper, I briefly review the literature on site stewardship programs and volunteerism and present the results of my exploratory ethnographic research on this question. I close with a discussion about how differing …

The God Of Death Takes Half Of Our Children: Health Of Women And Children In The Sundarbans Islands, Bipasha Biswas

Social Work Faculty Publications

Grassroots level health care workers provided insights into rural women's health concerns at a program development workshop held at Sundarban Islands in West Bengal, India. This report describes these narratives and identifies strategies for potential intervention plans. The narratives suggest layers of disenfranchisement compounded by gender inequality and geographic instability.

Should Gambling Markets Be Privatized? An Examination Of State Lotteries In The United States, Kent Grote, Victor Matheson May 2013

Should Gambling Markets Be Privatized? An Examination Of State Lotteries In The United States, Kent Grote, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

State lotteries currently operate in 43 states across the US. Recently, three states have privatized their lottery operations, handing over the management of their lotteries to private companies in hopes of generating greater revenues for the state governments. Questions arise regarding the economic rationale for this decision and an economic model is presented to determine whether one state, Illinois, has been successful at generating more state transfer revenues as a result of privatization in its first year of results. The issue of lottery privatization is also examined

A Comparative Analysis Of Paleoindian And Terminal Archaic Lithic Assemblages From Southeastern Connecticut To Determine Diagnostic Debitage Attributes, Colleen Mcalister May 2013

A Comparative Analysis Of Paleoindian And Terminal Archaic Lithic Assemblages From Southeastern Connecticut To Determine Diagnostic Debitage Attributes, Colleen Mcalister

Honors Scholar Theses

The Paleoindian and Terminal Archaic periods can be differentiated on the basis of projectile point typology. This study was conducted to determine whether these two stone tool production periods could also be distinguished based solely on debitage, or the by-products of stone tool production. Goals included accurately analyzing and classifying stone tool flakes from an Early Paleoindian site, a Late Paleoindian site, and two Terminal Archaic sites, based on morphology, material, and possible geographical sources. The methods used here will help future researchers to classify sites as Paleoindian or Terminal Archaic in the initial site exploration phase.

Community-Centered Design: Using Applied Research To Develop A New Identity For The Windham Harm Reduction Coalition, Celia E. Poirier May 2013

Community-Centered Design: Using Applied Research To Develop A New Identity For The Windham Harm Reduction Coalition, Celia E. Poirier

Honors Scholar Theses

This project combines design and communication in the development of a visual identity for a local syringe exchange program. Background research revealed the legal, political, and social controversy that these programs face in the United States. Despite resounding evidence of their effectiveness at preventing HIV, many exchange programs are highly stigmatized in their communities. A new visual identity aims to overcome residents' past misconceptions about Willimantic's syringe exchange, and promotes the program as a valuable resource in town.

On The Relation Between Parenting Practices And Pathological Narcissism In Adolescents, Kristen L. Mechanic May 2013

On The Relation Between Parenting Practices And Pathological Narcissism In Adolescents, Kristen L. Mechanic

Honors Theses

The present study examined the relation between parenting practices and grandiose and vulnerable narcissism. The study used the self-report data of 407 adolescents (348 males, 57 females, 2 unreported) who were enrolled in a residential program in the summer and fall of 2011 and 2012. Participants completed a battery of surveys, including the Pathological Narcissism Inventory and the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire. Findings link grandiose narcissism to positive parenting practices and poor monitoring and supervision, with positive reinforcement and poor monitoring and supervision predicting unique variance in adolescent grandiose narcissism. Vulnerable narcissism was significantly positively correlated with the negative parenting practices …

The Council Of Conservative Citizens: Extolling Nativism And Perpetuating Stereotypes, Jordan M. Tinnon May 2013

The Council Of Conservative Citizens: Extolling Nativism And Perpetuating Stereotypes, Jordan M. Tinnon

Honors Theses

The Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC), an overtly pro-white, anti-immigrant political organization, uses biased news articles laden with racial stereotypes to promote and propagate their dogma of white superiority and nativism. In these articles particular attention is paid to the supposed threats of Hispanic immigration, attempting to make the case that Hispanics put white Americans’ health and safety, along with the white American way of life, at risk. Six recent articles from the CofCC website are shown to capitalize on the fear of the public to further advance and support a doctrine of nativism. Nativism has serious ramifications both to …

Aaarrrggg I’M A Pirate: Cloud-Streaming Services And Their Effects On Music Consumption And Music Piracy, Caitlin M. Seale May 2013

Aaarrrggg I’M A Pirate: Cloud-Streaming Services And Their Effects On Music Consumption And Music Piracy, Caitlin M. Seale

Honors Theses

With advances in technology, music consumption among listeners has vastly changed throughout the years. These changes in technology have allowed piracy to thrive and prosper while physical sales vastly decreased. Previous studies have explored how music piracy effects music consumption. This study goes beyond the work that previous studies have explored by examining a new form of music consumption—cloud-streaming websites. This thesis examines how cloud-streaming services have affected music consumption and music piracy through an analysis of an online study distributed to music consumers. The results showed that cloud-streaming services do change the way that people consume music. Respondents demonstrated …

Black Empowerment And Mobilization: A Comparison Of Urban And Small City Trends, Samantha D. Rayborn

Honors Theses

This research to follow compares voting trends between blacks in urban cities and smaller, non-urban cities. The research aims to replicate the findings based on studies of large cities that blacks tend to have higher or lower turnout rates when there is a black public office holder. Election results were taken from mayoral elections in Alexandria, LA and Monroe, LA. Previous research indicates that blacks have a high rate of turnout in urban areas when there is a black elected official. However, does this effect hold true in non-urban, small cities? Blacks in smaller, non-urban cities, this study finds, do …

A total of 216 participants completed questionnaires that consisted of demographic information and self-esteem, religiosity, and marital readiness scales. Results indicated that self-esteem and religiosity combined have a statistically significant positive relationship with marital readiness criteria. In addition to the analysis among all of the variables, the independent relationship between each independent variable on marital readiness was examined. The relationship between …

The Relation Of Adhd Characteristics To Positive Illusory Bias Among Gifted Elementary Students: Iq As A Possible Moderator, Meredith S. Manguno May 2013

The Relation Of Adhd Characteristics To Positive Illusory Bias Among Gifted Elementary Students: Iq As A Possible Moderator, Meredith S. Manguno

Honors Theses

The current study examined the relation between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) characteristics and Positive Illusory Bias (PIB) in gifted elementary students. Children with ADHD have a propensity toward a PIB—or seeing themselves in a more positive light than other standards would indicate—even among domains in which they struggle (Owens, Goldfine, Evangelista, Hoza, & Kaiser, 2007). This tendency toward a PIB may be linked with their encounters of a great number of setbacks and could be a way to create hope and positivity. In comparison, gifted students frequently meet and surpass goals, often with few setbacks. Thus, twice-exceptional students (e.g., gifted students …

Professional First Ladies In The Media: Framing Of Clinton, Bush, And Obama In The Washington Post, Jazmyne E. Butler

Honors Theses

This study examines how the news media portray and frame modern first ladies. By prefacing the research with background information about the history of the role of first ladies, and media theories such as framing, the reader is able to better understand the implications of this coverage. Other previous research delved into gender roles and how deviation from these roles is subject to criticism. The goal of the research is to examine the first 100 days of a presidency to determine if a first lady who steps out of bounds with the traditional societal female gender role is subject to …
