The Chess Players, Gerry A. Wolfson-Grande May 2013

The Chess Players, Gerry A. Wolfson-Grande

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

Originally conducted primarily as a game of war and strategy, chess has evolved to reflect historical developments in Western civilization as well as inspired literary and artistic endeavors in such a fashion as to provide comment, often as metaphor, on the human condition and our place in a cosmos influenced as frequently by chance as by order. The evolution of the game itself, particularly the promotion of a weak and relatively unimportant piece to the most powerful, at a time when a similar shift was taking place in the real world, ensured its survival as it served as an educational …

Relational Identities: Reclaiming Ourselves Through Recreating Each Other In Collaborative Conversations In Group Therapy Work, Celia Quintas, Christopher F. Burnett

Peace and Conflict Studies

This project took place at an outpatient mental health setting, and offers new understandings in our pursuit for communal well-being. It documents the unique participation of group members in the co-creaction of new knowledge and better understanding of human relationships using a participatory action research methodology. The article explores how improvements can take place in the lives of people diagnosed as chronically mentally ill. It demonstrates how a postmodern, collaborative approach to group therapy impacted the ways in which persons diagnosed with serious and chronic mental illness recreated their identities, thereby affecting their ways of relating to others and to …

The Influence Of Spatial Distance Priming On Test Anxiety And Judgments, Eric R Raap May 2013

The Influence Of Spatial Distance Priming On Test Anxiety And Judgments, Eric R Raap

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This paper examined the effects of distance priming on test anxiety and judgment. Research suggests that individuals’ perceived distance can impact their affect and judgments, which sheds light on the principle of “distance equals safety” (Williams & Bargh, 2008). Taking an exam invokes both cognitive and emotional anxiety, such as worry, panic, and tension. It is hypothesized that the distance priming may reduce test anxiety—particularly, the emotionality aspect—as well as perceived test difficulty. The results showed that, counter to the hypotheses, there was no significant difference among the three priming groups in their emotional test anxiety or perceived test difficulty. …

Conspiracy, Pragmatism And Style: An Analysis Of Richard Nixon's Antecedent Anti-Communist Conspiracy Rhetoric, Evan L. Johnson May 2013

Conspiracy, Pragmatism And Style: An Analysis Of Richard Nixon's Antecedent Anti-Communist Conspiracy Rhetoric, Evan L. Johnson

Communication and Rhetorical Studies - Theses

This study is a rhetorical analysis of Richard Nixon's early-career anti-communist conspiracy rhetoric. In conspiracy scholarship, two tracks have emerged: the paranoid style and the political style of conspiracy. Nixon, though, as a tricky rhetor, does not fall neatly within either of those styles, instead he samples from both styles over time and even within single speeches. After synthesizing the two styles into a method, I analyze three early Nixon anti-communist conspiracy texts between 1946-1962 which span those years and cover various genres. Text one is Nixon's "Maiden Speech" to the House of Representatives in 1947. It is mostly in …

The Crisis Of Secularism: How Democracy Fuels Moral Panics And Religious Fundamentalism, Pedja Ilic May 2013

The Crisis Of Secularism: How Democracy Fuels Moral Panics And Religious Fundamentalism, Pedja Ilic

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

While identifying humanity’s most cherished ideals, there is one notion that ultimately supplants all others: the notion of freedom. The concept itself and its encompassing rhetoric have been utilized ad nauseam by virtually all contemporary social orders to validate the levels of civilizational maturity and, perhaps more importantly, to set goals to which the same should strive. However, irrespective of its categorical position at the very summit of conscious human existence, its interpretational elasticity allows for a diminishing number of concessions. This paper offers critique and examines interactions between multiculturalism, cultural relativism, religion, and secularism within contemporary Western societies. It …

Improving Student Research: The Embedded Librarian, Melissa Clark, Linda Kott, Chris Schafer

Library Conference Presentations and Posters

How can we develop critical thinking and solid research skills in students who prefer to Google, copy, and paste? Academic quality in higher education can benefit/profit greatly from the embedded librarian approach to information literacy instruction, and this presentation will explore the possibilities. Not all instances of embedded librarianship are created equally, and this presentation explains several different models, in addition to discussing how collaborative relationships between departments and librarians may improve student research. Experience with embedded librarianship in a beginning speech communication course is explored.

Does The Difference Between Handwriting And Typing Influence Memory Ability?, Ai Shinohara May 2013

Does The Difference Between Handwriting And Typing Influence Memory Ability?, Ai Shinohara

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Technology has had a great impact on education today. Computer skills are necessary in order to complete many school assignments, and typing on the computer has become a main writing method for younger generations (Burnhart & Goldinger, 2010). Many college students bring their computers in the classroom, and more and more students have started to take notes by typing on their computer instead of handwriting their notes. The question to this convenient society is whether the new writing method, typing, affects students’ memory abilities in a classroom situation. The current study was conducted to determine if handwriting or typing was …

Examining Stress And Performance Anxiety As Predicting Factors Of Athletic Burnout In Collegiate Student-Athletes, Drew Barnard May 2013

Examining Stress And Performance Anxiety As Predicting Factors Of Athletic Burnout In Collegiate Student-Athletes, Drew Barnard

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

In the past, burnout has been a popular topic for research. However, within the realm of athletics, a majority of such research has been focused on coaches, athletic department staff, and athletic trainers. The purpose of this study was to assess potential contributing factors of burnout among student-athletes at Lindenwood University, an institution with National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division II and Student-Life athletic programs. Completion of four questionnaires was required in this study; a Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, 1983), a Self-Rated Anxiety Scale (Zung, 1979), a Modified Burnout Questionnaire (Harris, 2005), and a Demographic Questionnaire. The student-athletes who participated …

motivation to purchase that product. The research hypothesis stated that color would have an effect on a person’s motivation to purchase a product and that those differences would vary between sex as well. To test this hypothesis, the current study recruited participants to take a demographic survey and rate 60 colored products on a slideshow. The slideshow consisted of 60 pictures, 10 items colored in the 6 primary and secondary colors. The participants were given as much time as they needed to rate each item on a Likert scale from 0-would not buy to 10-would definitely buy. After the participants …

Race, Attire, And Perception Of Sexual Harassment Victim Culpability, Eliza A. Murray May 2013

Race, Attire, And Perception Of Sexual Harassment Victim Culpability, Eliza A. Murray

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of the present study was to determine if there were significant differences in how college students perceive culpability for sexual harassment victims as a result of varying victim race (e.g. African-American and Caucasian) and attire (e.g. revealing attire and non-revealing attire), a perceived indicator of promiscuity. The hypothesis was that participants would perceive the African-American sexual harassment victim wearing revealing attire as more culpable than the African-American victim wearing non-revealing attire, the Caucasian victim wearing revealing attire, and the Caucasian victim wearing non-revealing attire The present study was a 2 (Race) x 2 (Attire) within-participants design that included …

Overcoming Barriers To Teaching Action-Based Environmental Education: A Multiple Case Study Of Teachers In The Public School Classroom, Terry Rachael Adams May 2013

Overcoming Barriers To Teaching Action-Based Environmental Education: A Multiple Case Study Of Teachers In The Public School Classroom, Terry Rachael Adams

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As the human population increases, it becomes increasingly more important for society to understand the impact of humans on the environment. Preserving fixed resources by engaging in sustainable practices is necessary to ensure those resources are available for future generations. Since the early 1960s, policy makers and educators alike have sought to ensure that students graduate environmentally literate. Previous research has identified a multitude of barriers that limit classroom teacher’s ability to integrate environmental education into their curriculum. The purpose of this study was to investigate how teachers overcome those barriers that restrict the integration of action based environmental education …

Bosnian Immigrants: An Analysis Of The Bosnian Community's Influence On The Cultural Landscape Of Bowling Green, Ky, Nathan Jess Cary May 2013

Bosnian Immigrants: An Analysis Of The Bosnian Community's Influence On The Cultural Landscape Of Bowling Green, Ky, Nathan Jess Cary

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Diasporas have been occurring for thousands of years, and today globalization has facilitated the quick rate at which diasporas occur on a global scale. Diasporas entail the mass movement of refugees across international borders, and diasporic peoples today now find themselves journeying across oceans and continents to the safety of host cities in a matter of weeks or days. My research analyzes the effects that Bosnian immigrants have had on the cultural landscape of Bowling Green, Kentucky. When people move, they bring their cultures with them, and this type of cultural diffusion impacts the landscape of the host cities. As …

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation: Abraham Lincoln As An Adult Learner, Warren Greer May 2013

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation: Abraham Lincoln As An Adult Learner, Warren Greer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Over the last two decades, research has identified factors that foster versus undermine human motivation and well being with important implications for learning and performance. Much of the research is concerned with intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation and autonomous versus non-autonomous learning environments. The data suggests that learning and performance are often significantly enhanced in autonomy-supportive environments that foster intrinsic motivational perspectives. This study examines the lived experience of Abraham Lincoln in the context of his adult learning motivation, forming a qualitative narrative around his adult educational experiences. It was hypothesized that Abraham Lincoln benefited from learning experiences with high levels …
