Students Serving Students: Perceived Benefits Of Direct Community Service, Ashley M. Taylor
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between participation in direct community service and future community service intentions. Pre and post surveys, developed for use in this study, were administered at the beginning and end of a week-long community service project, to measure differences in attitude toward community service and those they were assisting. Analysis of the results demonstrated an increase in the enjoyment of community service activities, as well as working well with others. There was also a significant decrease when responding to the item, “It is not something that is essential to our lives.” The …
Regressions On Personality And Political Preferences Of Greek Letter Social Organizations, Michael B. Armstrong
Regressions On Personality And Political Preferences Of Greek Letter Social Organizations, Michael B. Armstrong
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Research examining fraternities and sororities is minimal. Whenever research does arise, it usually focuses on negative stigmas with these organizations, such as alcohol abuse or hazing. This study seeks to examine more positive aspects of Greek organizations in order to inspire further research into fraternities and sororities. It was hypothesized that Greek-affiliated college students differ from unaffiliated college students in the Big Five personality factors such that Greek members are less likely to be open to experience, less conscientious, more extraverted, and less neurotic than nonmembers. Greek members and nonmembers will be similar in agreeableness. It is also hypothesized that …

Using The Stroop Test To Indicate Levels Of Muscle Dysmorphia In Men, Molly White
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Muscle dysmorphia a disorder in which a person obsesses over not being muscular enough. The purpose of the current study is to discover whether the Stroop Test can be used to find symptoms of muscle dysmorphia. Participants first fill out a demographics questionnaire. Then they completed a task using E-Prime computer software. Participants are presented with a group of neutral and bodyrelated words in blue, green, yellow, or orange. They indicated the color of the word by pressing the first letter of the color on the keyboard. The reaction time, as well as the number of errors, is measured. Muscle …

The Effects Of The Media On College Age Men: A Study Of Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder, Aaron D. Waddell
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This study inspected the influence of the media on Muscle Dysmorphia. The participants in this study were 41 male college students recruited from Western Kentucky University's Study Board. The participants completed demographics and then took the Muscle Dysmorphia Questionnaire and the Body Assessment Scale, viewed a film clip and then completed the aforementioned surveys again with rearranged questions. Results indicate that there is a significant time effect between the pre-test and post-test for both the Muscle Dysmorphia Questionnaire and the Body Assessment Scale, and a significant interaction between video and per-post-test Muscle Dysmorphic Questionnaire results. The findings suggest that films …

Next Generation Public Health Delivery: Optimizing Health And Economic Impact, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
Improving population health in the context of significant policy and economic change will require governmental public health agencies to rethink their roles within the U.S. health and social services systems, giving much greater attention to "catalytic" functions intended to mobilize, direct, and coordinate the actions of others. A growing body of evidence and experience suggests that such changes are likely to be feasible, effective, and efficient.

An Investigation Of Gender Differences In Pro-Environmental Attitudes And Behaviors, Sonja Plavsic
An Investigation Of Gender Differences In Pro-Environmental Attitudes And Behaviors, Sonja Plavsic
Honors Scholar Theses
Environmental responsibility has become an increasing concern in today's world. "Green" practices have become the norm with a growth in recycling options on school campuses and in cities, emissions restrictions for cars, and many brands positioning themselves as eco-friendly. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are gender differences regarding pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors among college students as predicted by socialization and social role theories, ecofeminism, and social norms. Participants were 313 University of Connecticut students (124 male, 189 female) who took part in an online survey measuring their attitudes towards the environment and conservation behavior. This …

Friends With Benefits Or “Friends” With Deficits? The Meaning And Contexts Of Uncommitted Sexual Relationships Among Mexican American And European American Adolescents, Lela Rankin Williams, Heidi Adams Rueda
Friends With Benefits Or “Friends” With Deficits? The Meaning And Contexts Of Uncommitted Sexual Relationships Among Mexican American And European American Adolescents, Lela Rankin Williams, Heidi Adams Rueda
Social Work Faculty Publications
Using focus groups, this study sought to understand and compare how Mexican American (n = 41, M = 16.0 years old, SD = .96) and European American (n = 34, M = 16.1 years old, SD = .64) youths conceptualize and experience “friends with benefits” relationships (FWBRs). Contrary to the implied nature of friendship, partners did not show caring and viewed FWBRs as a means to meet sexual needs. The “benefits” of this arrangement included guilt-free pleasure, little responsibility, the freedom to date others, or to remain available for a more desirable partner. The inherent deficits of FWBRs, …
Evaluating The Effects Of A Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Insomnia: A Pilot Study., Laurin Mack
Theses and Dissertations
Combat and war zone veterans are particularly vulnerable to developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) due to the increased risk of experiencing trauma inherent in military service. Insomnia and nightmares are core symptoms of PTSD and can be factors in the development, maintenance, and exacerbation of PTSD. However, sleep disturbance has received relatively little attention from a treatment point of view until recently. Recent research has demonstrated that cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) for nightmares are effective stand alone and combination treatments for sleep disturbance in civilian and veteran populations. Although group interventions are lower …
Research Brief: "Transitions In Dual Care For Veterans: Non-Federal Physician Perspectives", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Research Brief: "Transitions In Dual Care For Veterans: Non-Federal Physician Perspectives", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This brief is about non-federal physicians' perspectives on the organization and delivery of dual care for veterans. In policy and practice, patients should tell non-VHA physicians when VHA physicians change the patients' medications, and veterans should keep track of their health records, appointments, tests, treatments, and medications to support communication between dual care physicians; non-VHA and VHA physicians should improve communication between each other and adopt Electronic Medical Records. Suggestions for future research include improving survey response rates, using electronic surveys, carefully constructing the survey questions, and looking at the availability and compatibility of Electronic Medical Records between VHA and …

Immigrant Brides In Taiwan: New Land, New Hope?, Yuwen Chen
Immigrant Brides In Taiwan: New Land, New Hope?, Yuwen Chen
Student Research Initiative
In the last two decades, transnational marriages have been growing in Taiwan, Republic of China (R.O.C). Increasing numbers of Taiwanese men have married bride immigrants from Southeast Asian countries (Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Cambodia) and Mainland China. These women usually are from low socio-economic class and have little formal education. (Chen, Katsurada & Wu, 1998; Tsai, 2006; Tsai & Hsiao 2006) Their offspring are the so-called “New Taiwanese Children”(NTC). The academic performance of New Taiwanese Children has become a contested issue in Taiwanese society, because these children are viewed by some as not being able to contribute to …

A Workbook To Promote Forgiveness For Ingroup Congregational Offenses, Chelsea Greer
A Workbook To Promote Forgiveness For Ingroup Congregational Offenses, Chelsea Greer
Theses and Dissertations
Since research on forgiveness has flourished over the past three decades, multiple interventions have been developed to aid individuals in this arduous process. Two interventions in particular have been most-widely studied with diverse groups: Enright’s process model (Enright & Fitzgibbons, 2000) and Worthington’s REACH Forgiveness model (2006). Thus far, these forgiveness interventions have been led by trained professionals in an in-person group. In-person interventions pose issues of cost and attendance. In the current study, I adapted Worthington’s Christian-adapted REACH Forgiveness intervention into a self-directed workbook for Christians who have experienced an offense within a religious community. Participants (N = 52) …
Three Essays On Renewable Energy, Kepifri Alpha Lakoh
Three Essays On Renewable Energy, Kepifri Alpha Lakoh
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation studies three main issues related to renewable energy in the United States and in Sub Sahara Africa.
The first chapter seeks to provide answers to a very fundamental question for second generation biofuels: “How much crop residue can farmers harvest from their fields for sale to cellulosic ethanol companies without affecting current levels of production?” The model developed is applied to 101 counties from four Midwestern states in the United States (Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming). Results show that soil organic matter significantly contributes to explaining changes in technical efficiency and total factor productivity. Furthermore, average crop …

Evaluation Of Smart Phone Weight-Mile Tax Truck Data For Supporting Freight Modeling, Performance Measures And Planning, Katherine E. Bell, Miguel Andres Figliozzi
Evaluation Of Smart Phone Weight-Mile Tax Truck Data For Supporting Freight Modeling, Performance Measures And Planning, Katherine E. Bell, Miguel Andres Figliozzi
Student Research Symposium
Oregon is one of the few states that currently charge a commercial truck weight-mile tax (WMT). This research serves to evaluate ancillary applications for a system developed by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to simplify WMT collection. The data collection system developed by ODOT – Truck Road Use Electronics (TRUE) - includes a smart phone application with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device and microprocessor. The TRUE data has enormous advantages over commercial truck GPS data used in previous research due to its level of disaggregation and its potential to differentiate between vehicle and commodity types. This research evaluates …

Study Of Employment Retention Veterans (Serve): Improving Reintegration Of Oregon National Guard And Reserves In The Workplace, Gilbert Patrick Brady, Jr., Leslie B. Hammer
Student Research Symposium
This presentation will provide an overview of the recently funded Department of Defense grant (Principal Investigator, Leslie Hammer, Ph.D.). Since 9/11 over 2.8 million United States military personnel have served in and around Iraq and Afghanistan. By 2018, the number of post-9/11 veterans is projected to top 3.1 million. Of these most recent veterans, 18% have difficulty holding a job and many experience family difficulty. Presently, a third or more of these post-9/11 veterans – some 874,728 service members and counting – have deployed to various global hotspots as active-duty reservists of the U.S. armed forces. Unemployment, underemployment and mental …

Through A Veteran's Eyes: The Transition Of The Army Leader Into The Civilian Workforce, Maria Carolina Gonzalez-Prats
Student Research Symposium
In the next five years, over a million service members will be transitioning back into civilian life, the majority from tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. This qualitative study, completed as a satisfying requirement for the Masters of Psychology in Organization Development degree at Sonoma State University, explored the experiences of leaders, as well as the challenges and enablers that effect their transition from the Army to the Civilian workforce. The thesis also examined the impact on both the military and civilian communities. Data was collected using interviews with ten Army leaders, whose time in service ranged from four to 22 …
The Importance Of Choice: Political Intermediaries And Democratization In Egypt After The Arab Spring, Matthew Lacouture
The Importance Of Choice: Political Intermediaries And Democratization In Egypt After The Arab Spring, Matthew Lacouture
Student Research Symposium
Is post-revolution Egypt demonstrably different from the ancien régime? Where and between whom is political competition currently taking place? In the aggregative conception, democracy requires the presence of substantive political choice, differentiated through 'robust' competition between intermediaries – most often political parties – that serve to effectively aggregate and articulate political preferences. This produces an observable and genuine link between public preferences and government policies. In Egypt, the lack of a coheren and viable alternative to the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) – itself an amalgamation of conflicting and particularistic interests – has deprived the people of any …
Perceptions Of Mexican Residents In Oregon About Mexican Politics, Anabel López Salinas
Perceptions Of Mexican Residents In Oregon About Mexican Politics, Anabel López Salinas
Student Research Symposium
In 2012, the Mexican Consulate in Portland, Oregon, through the local Spanish press announced the guidelines for participating in the election of the president of Mexico held in July of that year. Despite the efforts made by the Mexican authorities to promote voting, 22 interviews with Mexicans living in Oregon determined that the migrant population lacks the necessary tools to exercise their vote from this state. Most respondents think that the Mexican state by not facilitating their participation by providing those required tools, forget the enormous economic contributions of migrants to the country. Oregon is a new destination for Mexican …
Post-Revolution Language Change In The Libyan Media: Tamahaq News Broadcast, Ashour Abdulaziz
Post-Revolution Language Change In The Libyan Media: Tamahaq News Broadcast, Ashour Abdulaziz
Student Research Symposium
This paper examines segments from the very first Tamazight language TV news broadcast in the history of Libya in May 11, 2011. In the analysis, I focus on (a) Tamazight-Arabic code switching and (b) the profound influence of Arabic on the Tamazight spoken in this situation. Before the February 17 Revolution, such a broadcast was unthinkable, as the use of the language in such public contexts was outlawed during Gaddafi's rule. Post Feb. 17, the Tamazight language emerged in the media as a new linguistic spoken and written resource in the Libyan setting itself up as in contrast to and …
