“We have ears but no hearing. We have eyes but no sight. But I hope our children do not have to go through a similar fate of ignorance.” – Kattike Nepali (Jumla)

From 1996 to 2006 Nepal experienced a horrible, civil conflict taking over 13,000 of its citizens, displaced another 25,000 with many more unaccounted for. With the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord in 2006, between the Government of Nepal and the Maoists insurgents, the violence ceased but the long road to recovery and peace began. Nepal is currently transitioning towards a democratic government. The establishment of a Constitutional …

Closer To Nature: Exploring Environmental Summer Camp Experience Through Ethnographic Fiction, Courtney Morgan Schofield Jun 2013

Closer To Nature: Exploring Environmental Summer Camp Experience Through Ethnographic Fiction, Courtney Morgan Schofield

Masters Theses

This thesis explores the experiences of counselors and campers at environmentally-themed summer camps through the medium of ethnographic fiction. Research was conducted by examining the experiences and influences of two separate summer camps, the Midwest Nature Center Camp and Midwest Zoo Camp. Drawing on traditional ethnographic research methods, I explore the environmental messages emphasized during camp, the myriad of relationships individuals have with nature, and the impact of gender on the summer camp experience. Yet, while this thesis is based on ethnographic research, an emphasis is placed on the presentation of the information. By examining the way anthropology has been …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Collegiate Athletic Involvement And Academic Achievement Among Sport Management Students, Christopher Amos Jun 2013

A Quantitative Analysis Of Collegiate Athletic Involvement And Academic Achievement Among Sport Management Students, Christopher Amos

Masters Theses

Within the last several decades, more attention has been focused on the academic success of college athletes. It has been documented from several studies that high school athletes perform better academically than their non-athlete peers (American Sports Institute, 1995; Brand, 2007; Dilley-Knoles, Burnett, & Peak, 2010; Foltz, 1992; Fox, Barr-Anderson, Neumark-Sztainer, & Wall, 2010; Slear, 2005). However, at the collegiate level, this heightened academic achievement trend among student-athletes is not so clear. Lapchick often releases data regarding graduation rates among a select group of highly achieving teams in certain sports but not much exists in the way of a comparison …

Alaska Winter's Relationship To Domestic Violence And Alcohol Abuse, Jennifer Marie Read Jun 2013

Alaska Winter's Relationship To Domestic Violence And Alcohol Abuse, Jennifer Marie Read

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Alaska is known for its long, dark, cold winter months. Daylight savings time exists to cope with months that have little sunlight, but that still leaves on average, five hours of daylight. Special light bulbs exist to help with the darkness by providing light that tricks the body into thinking it is getting more sun than it really is. As daylight decreases, the weather turns colder; depression, alcohol, and domestic violence begin to rise. Studies show alcohol related crime and domestic violence occur more during the winter months in Alaska. This research paper will analyze the data pertaining to alcohol …

The Twenty-First Century Black Bag: Mobile Delivery Of Health Care Information And Implications For Health Science Library Collection Development, Elizabeth Retzel Bucciarelli Jun 2013

The Twenty-First Century Black Bag: Mobile Delivery Of Health Care Information And Implications For Health Science Library Collection Development, Elizabeth Retzel Bucciarelli

Graduate Capstone Projects

Mobile devices such as electronic tablets and smart phones have had a tremendous impact on the delivery of health and medically-related information for health care professionals. These innovative information tools are now used regularly at the patient bedside and in clinical care settings to enhance patient education and to access information regarding best practices, and point-of-care diagnostics and treatments. Presumably, then, institutions which educate students in the health sciences must also teach and acclimate them throughout their allied health programs to integrate and apply these health information delivery tools into clinical practice. This project will review the last five years …

Indian Gaming And Tribal Revenue Allocation Plans: Socio-Economic Determinants Of Policy Adoption, Thaddieus W. Conner, William A. Taggart Jun 2013

Indian Gaming And Tribal Revenue Allocation Plans: Socio-Economic Determinants Of Policy Adoption, Thaddieus W. Conner, William A. Taggart

Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

As the Indian gaming industry has experienced unprecedented growth over the past two decades, tribes have pursued different paths regarding the utilization of gaming revenues within parameters established by the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Since 1993, more than 100 tribes have received approval through the Department of the Interior to distribute revenues directly to tribal members through per capita payments governed by a Tribal Revenue Allocation Plan (RAP). This paper improves our understanding of nations with payment plans by exploring whether socio-economic tribal features are associated with the successful adoption of a RAP. We find that tribes who gained approval …

Demo: Approximate Semantic Matching In The Collider Event Processing Engine, Souleiman Hasan, Kalpa Gunaratna, Yongrui Qin, Edward Curry

Kno.e.sis Publications

This demo presents a use case from the energy management domain. It builds upon previous work on approximate semantic matching of heterogeneous events and compares two semantic matching scenarios: exact and approximate. It illustrates how a large number of exact matching event subscriptions are needed to match heterogeneous power consumption events. It then demonstrates how a small number of approximate semantic matching subscriptions are needed but possibly with a lower true positives/negatives performance. The demo is delivered via the COLLIDER approximate event processing engine currently under development in DERI.

De La Littérature Beur À La Littérature De Banlieue : Un Changement De Paradigme, Mireille Le Breton

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article traces the history of “beur” literature and shows the evolution of the literary production emerging from the “banlieues”. This article therefore foregrounds a paradigm shift, refl ected in the sensibility of a new wave of novelists.

Co-Rumination Partially Mediates The Relationship Between Social Support And Emotional Exhaustion Among Graduate Students, Justin P. Boren Jun 2013

Co-Rumination Partially Mediates The Relationship Between Social Support And Emotional Exhaustion Among Graduate Students, Justin P. Boren

Communication

Graduate students regularly report high levels of stress and burnout. Many of those same students utilize social support networks, which can act as stress buffers. This study evaluated excessive negative talk about issues (co-rumination) and its effects on that social-support to burnout (emotional exhaustion) relationship and predicted that co-rumination would act as a suppressor variable. Graduate student volunteers (N = 213) reported their levels of social support, co-rumination, and emotional exhaustion. Data indicated that co-rumination did mediate the social support-to-emotional exhaustion relationship on two dimensions. This project purports that, while social support is important, the content of socially-supportive interactions may …

Language Learning, Ecological Validity, And Innovation Under Conditions Of Superdiversity, Steven L. Thorne Jun 2013

Language Learning, Ecological Validity, And Innovation Under Conditions Of Superdiversity, Steven L. Thorne

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article describes three pedagogical proposals oriented toward moving language learning to the center of higher education, and further, to emphasizing the importance of both continued first (L1) and additional/foreign (L2) language learning as central to academic and professional success. The first project, titled Language-Integrated Knowledge Education (or LIKE), aims at making explicit the linguistic resources necessary for full participation in written and spoken academic contexts, in both students' first as well as (potentially) multiple foreign languages. The second project describes the benefits and rationale for broadening the use of online intercultural exchange within foreign language education as well as …

Link Up The Sticks: Access And Barriers To Professional Development For Small And Rural Academic Librarians, Kaetrena Davis Kendrick, Echo Leaver, Deborah Tritt

Faculty Publications

Participation in continuing education and professional development are crucial to the practice of librarianship as a thriving profession. However, increasingly tight budgets, stagnant salaries, small staff, and lack of access to current technologies may prevent active academic librarians who work on small and rural campuses from fully participating in professional development. As the duties of the modern librarian continue to evolve, efforts to ensure access to quality ongoing training for 21st-century information professionals from all areas of the North American landscape remain paramount. This study explores how academic librarians in small or rural library environments keep up with modern library …

(Ir)Rational Exuberance: Optimism, Ambiguity And Risk, Anat Bracha, Donald J. Brown Jun 2013

(Ir)Rational Exuberance: Optimism, Ambiguity And Risk, Anat Bracha, Donald J. Brown

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The equilibrium prices in asset markets, as stated by Keynes (1930): “…will be fixed at the point at which the sales of the bears and the purchases of the bulls are balanced.” We propose a descriptive theory of finance explicating Keynes’ claim that the prices of assets today equilibrate the optimism and pessimism of bulls and bears regarding the payoffs of assets tomorrow. This equilibration of optimistic and pessimistic beliefs of investors is a consequence of investors maximizing Keynesian utilities subject to budget constraints defined by market prices and investor’s income. The set of Keynesian utilities is a new class …

Adverse Selection And An Individual Mandate: When Theory Meets Practice, Martin B. Hackmann, Jonathan T. Kolstad, Amanda E. Kowalski

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We develop a model of selection that incorporates a key element of recent health reforms: an individual mandate. We identify a set of key parameters for welfare analysis, allowing us to model the welfare impact of the actual policy as well as to estimate the socially optimal penalty level. Using data from Massachusetts, we estimate the key parameters of the model. We compare health insurance coverage, premiums, and insurer average health claim expenditures between Massachusetts and other states in the periods before and after the passage of Massachusetts health reform. In the individual market for health insurance, we find that …

Towards An Understanding Of The Endogenous Nature Of Group Identification In Games, John Smith, Katerina Bezrukova Jun 2013

Towards An Understanding Of The Endogenous Nature Of Group Identification In Games, John Smith, Katerina Bezrukova

Psychology

It is commonly assumed that identification with a social group is constant throughout the play of a one-shot game in the absence of feedback. We provide evidence which challenges this assumption. We direct subjects to play one of two versions of the prisoner's dilemma game. These versions are distinguished by the relative attractiveness of the uncooperative action. We refer to the version with a relatively attractive uncooperative action as the Easy Game and the other as the Difficult Game. We find that for the subjects who play the Difficult Game, their change in group identification is significantly related to their …

Savage Minds Interview: Kristina Killgrove, Ryan B. Anderson

Faculty Publications

Kristina Killgrove is a biological anthropologist at the University of West Florida. Her research focuses on theorizing migration in antiquity and on understanding urban development and collapse through the analysis of human skeletal remains. She works primarily in the classical world, attempting to learn about the daily lives of the lower classes in Imperial Rome through osteological and biochemical analyses, but she has also worked on questions of population interaction in the contact-period southeastern U.S.and in Medieval Germany. A strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and teaching help her bridge the sometimes large divide between classics and anthropology. For more about Killgrove's …
