Light influences the daily patterning of behavior by entraining circadian rhythms and through its acute effects on activity levels (masking). Mechanisms of entrainment are quite similar across species, but masking can be very different. Specifically, in diurnal species, light generally increases locomotor activity (positive masking), and in nocturnal ones, it generally suppresses it (negative masking). The intergeniculate leaflet (IGL), a subdivision of the lateral geniculate complex, receives direct retinal input and is reciprocally connected with the primary circadian clock, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Here, we evaluated the influence of the IGL on masking and the circadian system in a diurnal …

Client Experiencing In Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment For Eating Disorders, James William Vandyke Jun 2013

Client Experiencing In Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment For Eating Disorders, James William Vandyke

Theses and Dissertations

Depth of client experiencing has been associated with positive therapeutic outcomes across theoretical orientations. Experiencing describes a particular mode of cognitive-affective processing in which clients use internal felt experience as the basis for self-examination and the resolution of personally significant issues. Given evidence that eating disorders are associated with particular disruptions of cognitive-affective processing, it is likely that experiencing plays a role in the successful treatment of eating pathology. However, no study to date has examined the relationship between experiencing and outcome in eating disorder treatment. The purposes of the current study were to examine depth of client experiencing during …

Agriculture In A Water Scarce World, Allison Roberts, Amjad Assi, Bassel Daher, Men Li Jun 2013

Agriculture In A Water Scarce World, Allison Roberts, Amjad Assi, Bassel Daher, Men Li

Student Papers in Public Policy

According to the McKinsey report (2009), the world is facing a water scarcity challenge where agriculture is its predominant consumer. It accounts for approximately 3100 billion m3, or 71 percent of global water withdrawals today, and is expected to increase to 4500 billion m3 by 2030. This increase is due to a number of factors: growing population and the ever growing necessity to cater for its food needs, economic growth, the variability of precipitation trends and increase in global temperatures. In addition to the increase in water scarcity, the agricultural sector faces an enormous challenge of producing …

Ocean Sustainability, Logan Levan, Joshua Millea, Woo Choi, Mark Powell, David Flint Jun 2013

Ocean Sustainability, Logan Levan, Joshua Millea, Woo Choi, Mark Powell, David Flint

Student Papers in Public Policy

Oceans cover over 70% of the Earth’s surface area. They provide more than 90% of the world’s oxygen production, account for 200 billion pounds of food each year, regulate the global climate, and are the primary mode of global shipping traffic (“www.marinebio.org”). With such social, economic, and environmental value, there is a clear need to enact sustainable policies and practices concerning marine zones.

The Obesity Epidemic, Lenka Kollar, Evienne Epifano, Molly Mckneight, Jeff Miskovich, Heather Moore

Student Papers in Public Policy

The incidence of chronic, noncommunicable diseases, such as heart disease, is increasing at an alarming rate on the global scale. The growing prevalence of overweight and obesity have led to an upsurge in cases of diabetes and other obesity-related diseases. About 18 million people die every year from heart disease, of which diabetes and obesity are major predisposing factors. Worldwide, more than 1.1 billion adults are overweight, 312 million of which are obese. The number of children that are overweight or obese is also growing (Hossain, Parvez et al.). Obesity, and the associated diseases, has become a worldwide epidemic and …

Policy On Immigration From The Southwest And Resulting Border Control Security Implications, Amber Gottfried, Arpit Bawa, Russel Goff, Austin Grelle, Marielynn Herrera

Student Papers in Public Policy

The attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11) forced the United States to examine its immigration policies and how they relate to the national security of the nation. In the months following these events, Congress expanded the nation’s ability to collect data and share information on suspected terrorists through the passage of several laws focused on detaining and deportation of immigrants (Rosenblum, 2011). Although the intention of the enactment of these policies was to protect the nation from further terrorist attacks, they have created unforeseen impacts on populations identified as immigrants into the United States.

Food Security And State: Policy Considerations For The Contemporary Food Crisis, Mangala Subramaniam, Christopher Bunka Jun 2013

Food Security And State: Policy Considerations For The Contemporary Food Crisis, Mangala Subramaniam, Christopher Bunka

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

In 1996, The World Food Summit (WFS) set a target to eradicate hunger in all countries and an immediate goal to half the number of undernourished people by 2015. Backed by the United Nations (UN), international organizations launched a global effort with the intent of achieving food security for all people. A variety of approaches were employed, including the distribution of food aid and farming supplies, skills training in agricultural development, funding for country-specific research, and legal counsel for states. Despite international efforts, over a decade later the number of undernourished was calculated to have risen by nearly 60 million …

Overview: The Role Of Information Policy In Resolving Global Challenges, Sharon A. Weiner Jun 2013

Overview: The Role Of Information Policy In Resolving Global Challenges, Sharon A. Weiner

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

Governments in many countries recognize the importance of knowledge-based societies whose citizens are adaptable and have the means to engage in continuous learning. Information societies can address global challenges far more readily than those that do not adopt its characteristics of ICTs (information and communication technologies) and connectivity; usable content; infrastructure and deliverability; and human intellectual capability.

The Scholars' Initiative, Charles Ingrao Jun 2013

The Scholars' Initiative, Charles Ingrao

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

The Scholars’ Initiative addresses the need to break the cycle of nationalist discourse that perpetuates divisions between ethnic groups by (1) creating a common narrative that discredits proprietary myths, while validating “inconvenient facts” that must be acknowledged before mutual recognition and reconciliation can begin, and (2) enlisting regional media and political leaders to acknowledge (and hopefully) endorse) the existence of a common account co-authored by their own scholars.

Role Of Natural Gas In America's Energy Future: Focus On Transportation, Dharik Mallapragada, Rakesh Agrawal Jun 2013

Role Of Natural Gas In America's Energy Future: Focus On Transportation, Dharik Mallapragada, Rakesh Agrawal

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

The energy landscape of the United States for the past century has been dominated by the use of fossil fuels namely coal, petroleum, and natural gas (NG). While coal usage was dominant during the early 1900’s, petroleum has been dominant ever since the second half of the 20th century owing to increasing use of liquid fuels, gasoline and diesel, for transportation. In contrast, NG consumption in the U.S., currently at ~25% of total primary energy use, has only been steadily increasing since the early 1990’s (BP, 2012). However, the last decade has seen rapid growth in U.S. NG consumption …

Description Of 2011 Biofuels Policy Alternatives, Wallace Tyner

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

In the US, at the end of 2010 Congress extended the ethanol tax credit (VEETC) of $0.45/gal. for one year with the clear message to the industry and lobby groups that it wanted a long-term solution to be passed and implemented by the end of 2011. Following are some of the policy options that are being considered in 2011:

  • Continue the 45 cent/gallon subsidy and the import tariff as at present
  • Shift the subsidy from blender to biofuel producer
  • Subsidy that varies with the price of crude oil or gasoline
  • Subsidy based at least in part on performance in reducing …

Psychology

Background

Few studies of HIV+ individuals in China have examined the associations between HIV-related stress with sleep disturbance and fatigue, which are common complaints among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). We carried out this study to examine the relationships among perceived stress, sleep disturbance, and fatigue in PLWHA in China.

Methods

A mixed methods study design was used during data collection in Shanghai, China, from December 2009 to March 2010. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with 19 HIV+ females. Additionally, cross-sectional audio computer-assisted self-interviews (ACASI) were conducted to collect quantitative data from a convenience sample of 107 HIV+ patients (84% …

Who Would Be Affected By A New Minimum Wage Policy?, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

This brief describes the population who would be directly affected by the President’s proposal to increase the minimum wage to $9.00 per hour: workers earning between $7.25 and $9.00 per hour. Using data from the 2010 and 2012 Annual Social and Economic Supplement of the Current Population Survey, author Jessica Carson details the characteristics of these potentially affected earners and compares them with the hourly workforce more broadly, paying particular attention to rural-urban differences. She reports that nearly 17 percent of hourly paid workers earn between $7.25 and $9.00 per hour and would see a pay increase under the proposed …

Impact Of Eu Crisis On Saarc Countries, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

It is a matter of honour and privilege for me to be invited to share my thoughts with this august gathering of SAARC Governors. I wish to thank the Governor State Bank of Pakistan Mr. Yasin Anwar for providing me this opportunity. I would like to begin by briefly tracing the origin of the crisis of 2008/09 and then presenting the evidence about the changing role of Emerging and Developing Economies (EDEs) in the aftermath of the crisis. I would then turn to the subset of SAARC countries and see as to how much they were affected by this crisis. …

Rural Children Experience Different Rates Of Mental Health Diagnosis And Treatment, David Hartley Phd, Mph, Jennifer D. Lenardson Mhs, Nathaniel J. Anderson Ms, Mph, Samantha J. Neuwirth Md Jun 2013

Rural Children Experience Different Rates Of Mental Health Diagnosis And Treatment, David Hartley Phd, Mph, Jennifer D. Lenardson Mhs, Nathaniel J. Anderson Ms, Mph, Samantha J. Neuwirth Md

Mental Health / Substance Use Disorders

Research indicates that privately insured, rural adults have lower use of office-based mental health services, but higher use of prescription medicines than their urban counterparts. Patterns for rural children may be different from urban children because of the limited supply of pediatric mental health providers in rural areas, which may lead to reduced access and lower use of mental health services in rural areas versus urban. Using data on children ages 5-17 from the 2002-2008 of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, researchers from the Maine Rural Health Research Center find that rural children are significantly less likely to be diagnosed …

Qualitative Data Archiving In The Digital Age: Strategies For Data Preservation And Sharing, Lisa Cliggett

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Given the combination of recent mandates from funding agencies for data management plans and data sharing, and the explosion of data in digital form over the past two decades, it is time for the qualitative social science community to embrace digital archiving as an inherent component of research methodology. Archiving digital data ensures, at the least, that an individual scholar’s data is preserved and accessible to the user many decades into his or her career. Digital archiving also has the potential to preserve for the broader scholarly community, the full range of social science knowledge far beyond an individual researcher’s …

Lived Experiences Of Adolescents With Learning Disabilities, Christina W. Rosetti, Sheila J. Henderson Jun 2013

Lived Experiences Of Adolescents With Learning Disabilities, Christina W. Rosetti, Sheila J. Henderson

The Qualitative Report

Research indicates that young people with Learning Disabilities ( LD ) can suffer academic and social difficulties, lower levels of self - esteem, and social isolation. However, several research studies indicated that some children with LD were able to overcome these challenges through self - advocacy, peer support, and self - acceptance. Seeking to build on those results, the research question guiding this study was: What is the lived experience of adolescents with LD in regards to peer support, self - advocacy, and self - acceptance of LD? Interview data from a small purposive sample of four adolescent participants reportedly …
