Legal Tails: Policing American Cities Through Animals, Irus Braverman

Contributions to Books

Published as Chapter 8 in Policing Cities: Urban Securitization and Regulation in a 21st Century World, Randy K. Lippert & Kevin Walby, eds.

“I don’t worry about the four-legged animals,” Officer Armatys tells me as I scramble to catch up when he enters a backyard with a fierce-looking dog. “It’s the two-legged animals I am concerned about.” I interviewed Officer Armatys twice, first in his office in the Erie County’s Society for the Protection of Animals (ESPCA) and, a few months later, on a ride-along during a routine workday. Based on these encounters and numerous others with members of the …

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Three studies were performed to investigate the psychometric properties of the paper- and-pencil and online versions of the Italian Saving Inventory-Revised (SI-R) in nonclinical participants. In Study 1, the SI-R was administered to a community sample of 473 participants together with measures of obsessive-compulsive symptomatology, compulsive shopping, depression, and anxiety. In Study 2, temporal stability of the SI-R was investigated by administering the scale to 75 participants twice with a 4-week interval in between. In Study 3, 452 participants completed the SI-R through the internet. Evidence of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity, and replicability of the original three-correlated-factor structure …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between drug-related crimes in high-risk, rural Virginia counties (Brunswick County and Grayson County) and efforts to reduce them with a particular focus on a cost-benefit analysis of expenditures. Four independent variables were assessed in relation to drug-related crime: expenditures associated with (1) drug abuse prevention and (2) drug abuse treatment, (3) economic development, and (4) education. Does My Hair Bother You? Part 2, Adrienne M. Ellis Jul 2013

Does My Hair Bother You? Part 2, Adrienne M. Ellis

SURGE

I stopped shaving my legs in May. The decision to quit shaving was part social experiment, but a lot of it had to do with NOT HAVING TO SHAVE MY LEGS ANYMORE.

Honestly I didn’t make the decision to stop shaving my leg hair as some sort of feminist statement. I really just found it stupid how society pressures women to have smooth “sexy” legs. How did this pressure begin? Historically women didn’t shave their legs or underarms in the United States; however, hair removal was a common cultural practice in many other parts of the world such as …
