Tell Us What You Want To Do: Utilizing The Institutional Repository To Create An Experiential Learning Opportunity For Scholarly Communication Instruction, Jonathan Bull

Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

In Spring 2013, students in the Literary Editing and Publishing (English 380) class at Valparaiso University (Valpo) were asked to create a proposal for a literary review for which they would be the editorial board. This presentation will discuss the class assignment’s design, which the English faculty member and librarian co-authored, plus the various publishing concerns and problems that the class raised, what changes we might make in the future, as well as ask broader questions about how making the undergraduate student a publisher could drastically reframe scholarly communication instruction.

All Majors Welcome: Library Internships And Career Development, Heidi Gauder, Katy Kelly, Colleen Hoelscher

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

The academic library can play a crucial role in experiential learning, particularly through student internships. This library is one of the larger units on campus to employ student workers and we spend many hours training them to handle questions at service desks, assist with cataloging functions, help digitize materials, and a variety of other tasks. In 2011, we built on that idea of student workers and partnered with the University Honors Program to offer customized experiential learning through paid internships. These internships allowed us to spend additional time with students in preparation for their chosen careers or graduate school, helped …

Novel Behavioral Markers In The Ppt1-/- Mouse Model Of Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, Joshua Thomas Dearborn Aug 2013

Novel Behavioral Markers In The Ppt1-/- Mouse Model Of Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, Joshua Thomas Dearborn

Dissertations

Infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (INCL) is a lysosomal storage disease that is debilitating and fatal to children before their teenage years. The palmitoyl protein thioesterase 1 (PPT1) knockout (Ppt1-/-) mouse is an appropriate animal model that mimics much of the symptomology and brain pathology of the human disease. Ppt1-/- mice display blindness, seizures, and motor deficits and die well before wild-type mice. However, little is known about the cognitive and behavioral abilities of the Ppt1-/- mouse. This study was conducted to examine further the behavioral phenotype of the Ppt1-/- mouse model of INCL by evaluating the animals’ abilities in such …

Investigating The Housing Market For Student Tenants Surrounding An Urban University, Olivia M. Dobbs Ms. Aug 2013

Investigating The Housing Market For Student Tenants Surrounding An Urban University, Olivia M. Dobbs Ms.

Honors College Theses

The private housing market for students around Wayne State University, an urban campus in Detroit, Michigan, stands in a fast-changing period. The area has grown economically from institutional and medical center investment in the past few years, causing occupancy and rents to rise. This follows years of disinvestment that allowed rent rates to fall to comfortable rates for students. The University has published its interest in developing the “campus life” including more off-campus private market housing for students, while developers see potential for even higher rents for young professionals. This study assesses the current perceptions of a sample of rental …

Citations In A Cinch: From Bibliographies To Faculty Engagement, Brianne N. Hagen Aug 2013

Citations In A Cinch: From Bibliographies To Faculty Engagement, Brianne N. Hagen

Faculty Presentations

At Hope College, faculty are overwhelmed with the sheer number of places they must submit their publication information, including the institutional repository. A new project to generate citations for faculty chairs has been undertaken with two goals in mind: 1) create bibliographies for departments to use in annual reports, and 2) establish DC as the go-to place to find out what faculty have accomplished in the last year on campus, thereby eliminating the need to submit publication information elsewhere. The goals of this poster are to show the workflow of creating citations, how I worked with bepress to get what …

"Music Is The Voice Of A Culture": Cajun And Creole Musicians Speak About The Power Of Music To Preserve, Represent, And Celebrate South Louisiana's French Heritage, Moriah Istre Aug 2013

"Music Is The Voice Of A Culture": Cajun And Creole Musicians Speak About The Power Of Music To Preserve, Represent, And Celebrate South Louisiana's French Heritage, Moriah Istre

Student Theses and Dissertations

Cajun and Creole music, also known as French music, represents a vital part of South Louisiana's culture. The music I heard growing up instilled a strong sense of pride and belonging for me in connecting to my heritage, and the music grounds other Creoles and Cajuns in this common heritage as well. My passion for the music prompted me to examine the role that French music plays in preserving and transmitting Louisiana's Cajun and Creole cultures. I began my research by interviewing several of South Louisiana's musicians best qualified to speak about the subject. Each emphasized three main themes that …

Librarians As Consultants: The Convergence Of Information Literacy, Data Literacy And Scholarly Communication In Undergraduate Research, Lisa Zilinski, David Scherer, Clarence Maybee Aug 2013

Librarians As Consultants: The Convergence Of Information Literacy, Data Literacy And Scholarly Communication In Undergraduate Research, Lisa Zilinski, David Scherer, Clarence Maybee

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Undergraduate research has been identified as a high impact educational practice by the LEAP Report. At Purdue we support undergraduate research through various library-driven initiatives such as information literacy (IL), data literacy (DL) and scholarly communication (SC). Although these initiatives can be utilized to support undergraduate research individually, librarians are beginning to recognize a need to provide a service model that offers a more complementary/holistic approach that better utilizes the full capability of these initiatives. This was illustrated in the March 2013, ARCL Committee on Research and the Scholarly Environment White Paper, “Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy”. The …

Why Occupy?: Principal Reasons For Participant Involvement In Occupy Portland, Danielle Filecia Aug 2013

Why Occupy?: Principal Reasons For Participant Involvement In Occupy Portland, Danielle Filecia

Dissertations and Theses

Occupy Wall Street galvanized the country and attracted thousands of participants, who came to New York City in order to protest corporate greed. Occupy Portland, standing in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street, began their encampment less than a month later and attracted more participants on its first day than did Occupy Wall Street. This grounded theory inquiry uncovers the principle reasons why individuals participated in Occupy Portland. The findings revealed that participants were (1) upset about the bank bailouts and corporate irresponsibility; (2) swept up by the size and organization of Occupy; and (3) looking to get some fundamental societal …

That’S So Meta: Contemporary Reflexive Television And Its Textual Strategies, Katherine Lander Aug 2013

That’S So Meta: Contemporary Reflexive Television And Its Textual Strategies, Katherine Lander

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines existing discourse from the areas of film and literature studies in order to explore the complex textual applications and rhetorical functions of contemporary reflexive television. Characterized by its self-conscious effacement of the boundaries traditionally established by works of fiction, televisual reflexivity uses such interrelated textual strategies as meta-reference, meta-production, and meta-episodes in order to foreground the inherent artifice and mediation of television programming, ultimately conveying a form of implicit, and often parodic, self-analysis and interpretation within the diegesis of a given series. Additionally, the project examines a number of ways in which the emergence of digital media …

Research Brief: "Mental Health Diagnosis And Occupational Functioning In National Guard/Reserve Veterans Returning From Iraq", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the employment or enrollment in school of recently returned National Guard and Reserve OIF/OEF veterans who have a mental health diagnosis compared to those veterans without a mental health diagnosis. In policy and practice, the US military should implement pre- to post-deployment programs to help adjustment into work/school role functioning, and policymakers should partner with universities to help veterans cope with academic stress. Suggestions for future research include using a larger and more comprehensive sample of National Guard/Reserve OIF veterans and studying the effectiveness of programs and support for veterans.

Library And University Press As Journal Publishing Partners - Wayne State University Press And Libraries, Joshua Neds-Fox Aug 2013

Library And University Press As Journal Publishing Partners - Wayne State University Press And Libraries, Joshua Neds-Fox

Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

The Wayne State University Press Journals program comprises ten scholarly print serials. When the Press sought to deliver its journals electronically, in-house, for the first time, it established a mutually beneficial collaboration with the Libraries to host, format, manage and preserve its content online. We propose a case study of this collaboration, documenting the program, the process, and the unique features of this partnership. Neds-Fox will discuss the collaboration, the unexpected benefits for both partners not directly related to the publishing of the journals, and the future directions for the partnership.

Platform Jumping: Migration Collection From Dspace To Digital Commons, Jane Wildermuth, Andrew Harris

Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

Wright State’s Institutional Repository with Digital Commons, CORE Scholar, has been active for approximately a year and a half now. In addition to our Digital Commons platform, we have also maintained a DSpace-based repository since 2008. Earlier this year, due to a lack of support for our DSpace platform, CORE, we began to look for a new service to host our content. We have encountered many issues that needed to be resolved during the process of planning and executing our migration from DSpace to Digital Commons. In our presentation we plan to discuss our workflow for migrating diverse collections from …

The Role Of Sexual Scripts In Men's And Women's Interpretation And Endorsement Of Items Measuring Self-Reported Sexual Aggression, Sarah Kristen Buday Aug 2013

The Role Of Sexual Scripts In Men's And Women's Interpretation And Endorsement Of Items Measuring Self-Reported Sexual Aggression, Sarah Kristen Buday

Dissertations

Previous research on sexual aggression mainly focused on men as perpetrators and women as victims; more recently, the focus has shifted to include women as perpetrators of sexual aggression as well. This study sought to examine two different measures of sexual coercion perpetration (Revised Sexual Experiences Survey [SES-LFP] and the Post-Refusal Persistence Scale [PRPS]) in terms of their convergent validity for both men and women and to examine gender differences and similarities in item interpretation. In addition, participant agreement with traditional and non-traditional sexual scripts was examined for its association with endorsement of coercion. Participants were 648 individuals (426 women, …
