Research Brief: "Prospectively Assessed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And Associated Physical Activity", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the connection between physical activity and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans. In policy and practice, service members who experienced combat should have high levels of physical activity in order to reduce the possibility of developing PTSD, clinicians should mention the importance of physical activity for mental health to service members, as well as recommend alternatives for veterans who are unable to do high levels of physical activity. The VA should implement and promote fitness programs for service members and veterans to lower the possibility of developing PTSD, and policymakers should fund physical activity programs …

On The Inevitability Of Divided Government And Improbability Of A Complete Separation Of Powers, Rodger D. Congleton Aug 2013

On The Inevitability Of Divided Government And Improbability Of A Complete Separation Of Powers, Rodger D. Congleton

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper provides a tightly written overview and modest extension of the constitutional exchange and evolution model developed in Perfecting Parliament and uses that approach to analyze the division of authority that one would expect to see in contemporary constitutional governments. The analysis suggests that constitutions tend to be written, based on the king and council template, and buttressed by a more or less independent court system. Moreover, it suggests that constitutions change at the margin through time as constitutional bargaining takes place. This suggests that a complete separation of power is unlikely to be observed in the long run. …

Teaching And Learning Los Angeles Through Engagement With Ucla Library Special Collections, Kelly E. Miller, Robert D. Montoya

Urban Library Journal

This article presents a case study of how library services and special collections, in particular, can be integrated into undergraduate education by engaging strategically with a high-impact area of the curriculum and concentrating on courses related thematically to collection strengths. The goals of such engagement include enhancing student academic success and increasing the visibility and use of library services and collections. During the academic year 2012-2013, the UCLA Library's Teaching and Learning Services and Library Special Collections partnered with the Division of Undergraduate Education's Freshman Cluster Program to experiment with embedding librarians into instructional teams in order to improve students' …

Patere Legem, Quam Ipse Talisti: Nietzsche And The End Of Christianity, Matthew Faulconer, Van Tongeren, Dr. Travis Anderson Aug 2013

Patere Legem, Quam Ipse Talisti: Nietzsche And The End Of Christianity, Matthew Faulconer, Van Tongeren, Dr. Travis Anderson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In On the Genealogy of Morals Nietzsche says that every lawgiver eventually receives the call “patere legem, quam ipse tulistr” which means, “submit to the law you yourself proposed.” Nietzsche believes this call is being made to Christianity and that because of this, Christianity’s moral code will condemn Christianity. He calls this the self-overcoming of Christianity which is “the great spectacle in a hundred acts reserved for the next two centuries in Europe.”

Why Be Moral: The Rational Basis For Morality, Michael Durham, Dr. C. Terry Warner Aug 2013

Why Be Moral: The Rational Basis For Morality, Michael Durham, Dr. C. Terry Warner

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Of the many questions in modern meta-ethical debates, the question, “Why be moral?” immediately stands out as one of the most provocative. It seems to embody the moral skepticism notoriously rampant in contemporary society, insolently questioning not just particular moral demands, but the power and validity of any moral demands whatsoever.

Mobility Patterns As Seen Through Lithic Technologies, Aaron Fergusson, Dr. Joel C. Janetski

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During BYU’s 1995 field school many artifacts were brought back to BYU for analysis, including the important data set of toolstone artifacts and debris. At Fish Lake the sites excavated date from the Archaic (F7 area), Fremont (Mickeys Place), and Late Prehistoric (F14 area) time periods, each representing a different way of life. The Archaic and the Late Prehistoric time periods in the Great Basin are defined as representing a hunter/gatherer way of life. These were highly mobile, or residentially mobile groups and occupied a series of residential camps seasonally. The Fremont period 1 represents a horticultural way of life. …

Teaching Kindness To Parents Of School Children In Paraguay, Mark L. Elliott, Wesley R. Burr Aug 2013

Teaching Kindness To Parents Of School Children In Paraguay, Mark L. Elliott, Wesley R. Burr

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In May of 1996, I traveled to South America to teach a family life education course to parents in Paraguay. In the months preceding the trip, I sent packets of information to various public secondary schools in the area around the capital of Asuncion, offering a family enrichment course at no cost. After selecting a school, arrangements were made for school administrators to provide a classroom and needed materials for instruction.

What Lies Ahead: An Exploration Of Future Orientation, Self-Control, And Delinquency, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard Aug 2013

What Lies Ahead: An Exploration Of Future Orientation, Self-Control, And Delinquency, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Self-control has been consistently linked to antisocial behavior and though low self-control makes delinquency more likely, neither the findings nor the theory suggests that low self-control necessitates participation in such behavior. There remains a shortage of research on those situational factors or individual characteristics that might lessen the effects of low self-control on antisocial behavior. Future orientation is one such characteristic that can have implications for the control of behavior. The purpose of the current study was to explore the independent and interactive effects of future orientation and low self-control on delinquency using data from Wave 1 of the National …

Innovation Exposition: Advanced Research Course In Psychology (Psy 390), John Shaughnessy, Sonja Trent-Brown, Daryl R. Vantongeren

Faculty Presentations

The innovative Advanced Research course was designed in the early 1980s, well before the pedagogical approach of enquiry-based instruction was widely championed in the late 1990s to early 2000s (National Science Educational Standards, 1996; National Research Council, 2000). Enquiry-based instruction entails “learning through doing” and is a method of teaching and learning based on self-directed enquiry (EBL) or research (RBL) by the student (University of Manchester, 2007; University of Reading, n.d.). This course integrates a research experience for students in the psychology curriculum that reflects a cutting edge approach to teaching psychology. The “lone-wolf” model of science is outdated and …

Ohio Utica Shale Gas Monitor, Edward W. Hill, Kelly Kinahan Aug 2013

Ohio Utica Shale Gas Monitor, Edward W. Hill, Kelly Kinahan

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Development of the Utica Shale is impacting the economy of nearly every one of Ohio’s 88 counties. Although still in the exploration phase, the Utica Shale is triggering wealth creation even as the ongoing build-out of the formation’s midstream of pipelines and processing plants is limiting job creation and productivity.

This quarterly study groups Ohio’s counties into four categories: strong shale, moderate shale, weak shale, and non-shale counties. The results show that strong shale counties are experiencing ongoing enhanced economic activity with job creation that, while slim, outpaces hiring in other areas of the state. This wealth and job creation …

The researcher is conducting research on the brain cells of drosophila larvae. Specifically, the goal is to sort nuclei from glial and neuronal cells from the brains of mutant and wild type drosophila larvae. She will do transcriptome and high throughput ChIP-seq analysis on the cell nuclei to examine the distribution of complexes that modify histones and how loss of those complexes affects transcription. The stages of her research involve a long period of methodology development, a shorter data collection period, and then data analysis. The lab notebook contains written documentation of all experiments and trials and links to data, …

Constructing A Stemma For The Lds Book Of Mormon, 1879-1911, Adam Neilan Davis, Dr. Royal Skousen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the period 1879-1911, seven editions of the Book of Mormon were published by or for the LDS Church. Each contains a significant number of variants which aid the researcher in establishing a history of relationships between various texts, otherwise known as a stemma. My research established the stemma beginning with the 1879 Liverpool edition and concluding with the 1911 Chicago large-type edition.

Longitudinal Effects Of Family Structure Changes On The Academic Performance Of High School Students, Varden E. Hadfield, Dr. Joseph A. Olsen Aug 2013

Longitudinal Effects Of Family Structure Changes On The Academic Performance Of High School Students, Varden E. Hadfield, Dr. Joseph A. Olsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Extensive cross-sectional research has examined marital status and family composition and their effects on academic performance. Many cross-sectional studies have found moderate correlations between family structure and both grades and test scores. A few studies have found when race and socioeconomic status are controlled, correlations remain for only certain family types. However, after a thorough library computer index search and Internet National Educational Longitudinal Study index search, ill studies located were cross-sectional and focused on specific aspects of family structure, without time order data to provide evidence for causation.

The Effect Of Self-Monitoring And Manipulated States Of Self-Awareness On Attitude Change In A Dissonance Paradigm, Rachel E. Crook, Dr. Robert D. Ridge Aug 2013

The Effect Of Self-Monitoring And Manipulated States Of Self-Awareness On Attitude Change In A Dissonance Paradigm, Rachel E. Crook, Dr. Robert D. Ridge

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Personality and situational forces can affect the self-awareness necessary for cognitive dissonance to occur. Festinger’s cognitive dissonance theory assumes that people are motivated to maintain a consistency between their thoughts and their actions1. For example, if a person is not in favor of a tuition increase and chooses to write an essay against raising tuition, then, according to dissonance theory, she would experience consonance, because her attitude and behavior are consistent.

Six Months In: We Surge On, Laura J. Koenig, Emily M. Lindholm, Hannah M. Frantz, Elizabeth A. Rupert

SURGE

Steve Jobs created Apple in a garage. Facebook emerged out of a college dorm room. And so, like all good (and equally famous) things, the idea for Surge began in the Plank basement.

As seniors, and admittedly all bonafide social justice enthusiasts, we wanted to expand the movement at Gettysburg College and leave our mark. [excerpt]

Dialogue As Character Revelation In Wuthering Heights, Jennifer E. Shakespear, Dr. Cynthia L. Hallen Aug 2013

Dialogue As Character Revelation In Wuthering Heights, Jennifer E. Shakespear, Dr. Cynthia L. Hallen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In her novel Wuthering Heights, Emily Brönte uses the dialogue of her characters to disclose their inner-most workings. Like real humans, characters in novels share a part of themselves every time they speak. Their personalities, moods, demeanor, affections, dispositions, and affinities are revealed through language. By conducting a detailed linguistic analysis of the dialogue of both Catherine and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, I hoped to discover language patterns reflecting their temperament, emotions, and relationships with other characters. I believe my study was very successful in achieving this goal.

Progress Summary Of Translation Of The Parson’S Family, Owen F. Witesman, Ralph V. Larson Aug 2013

Progress Summary Of Translation Of The Parson’S Family, Owen F. Witesman, Ralph V. Larson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My first-draft translation of Finnish dramatist Minna Canth’s Papin Perhe [The Parson’s Family] is currently twenty pages (of one hundred thirty) from completion. This draft will be further proofed and refined by a number of character readings using individuals experienced in editing and dramatic interpretation. This final version will be submitted as my honors thesis in April of 2001. I will then publish the text online and seek print publication. The project as a whole has progressed somewhat more slowly than I had anticipated, owing mostly to an overestimation on my part as to how much text I would effectively …
