A Study Of Self-Employment Trends, Bengte Evenson, Dr. Mark H. Showalter Sep 2013

A Study Of Self-Employment Trends, Bengte Evenson, Dr. Mark H. Showalter

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The implications of current trends in self-employment are not well understood because the relevant literature is simply not well developed. A good portion of the current literature on self-employment can be found in the Small Business Journal, a recently established publication with a sociological focus. Economic publications on self-employment are much more scarce and tend to be mixtures of observation and preliminary analyzation. A major hindrance to the development of this literature is that there are few standards to guide it. Even the basic definition of self-employment is still debated. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does …

U. S. Presidential Races And Their Affect On Stock Portfolios, Matthew Downs, Dr. Steven Thorley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many factors influence the trading prices of securities listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Politicians, both Democratic and Republican, decide on an array of policies and tax laws that have a substantial affect on all areas of the market. In addition to this, as the economist John Maynard Keynes correctly predicted, government policies such as spending can have an enormous impact on the welfare of the economy.

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore the individual experiences of Residential Treatment Facility (RTF) workers utilizing physical restraints as an intervention with children, specifically looking at potential impact of these experiences, as well as the subsequent meaning making process. This exploratory study employed phenomenological qualitative methods of in-depth interviewing with six participants, creating a space through which these individuals were able to share their personal and collective narratives of working in RTFs. The data gathered through the phenomenological interview process displayed five salient and unanimous themes amongst the participants: the significance of their motivation for becoming a RTF …

What Happens When The Body Matters? : An Exploration Of Corporeal Textualities In The Life And Work Of Two White South African Authors And Its Implications For Clinical Social Work Practice, Asher Pandjiris Sep 2013

What Happens When The Body Matters? : An Exploration Of Corporeal Textualities In The Life And Work Of Two White South African Authors And Its Implications For Clinical Social Work Practice, Asher Pandjiris

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This project explores intergenerational transmission of trauma as evidenced in the body. Specifically, I focus attention on the somatic experiences of two white South African women, one historical/biographical and one fictional/contemporary, to elaborate the legacy of white colonial psychic disavowals in post-colonial South Africa. Using feminist and relational psychodynamic theories, this project addresses the alexithymia of the colonial predicament via an assertion that unwitnessed somatic distress as a result of disavowed trauma in individuals is potentially transmitted to subsequent generations and requires nuanced clinical attention. Additionally, this project argues that interrupting the intergenerational transmission of collective traumas such as colonialism …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative, exploratory study examines the perspectives of practicing feminist therapists about the benefits of utilizing feminist therapy for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Twelve licensed clinicians were interviewed about their clinical experiences and perceptions of the benefits of feminist therapy in treating clients diagnosed with BPD. Clinicians discussed the theory and implementation of feminist therapy; how feminist therapists understand BPD in light of current debates on the use of this diagnosis; and the unique benefits feminist therapy may offer in the treatment of BPD. Participants were asked to give their reactions to the BPD diagnosis and the …

Hiv/Aids Serostatus Disclosure And Stigma In Asian And Pacific Islander Women : A Call For Intersectionality In The Treatment Of Depression, Andrea L. Mize Sep 2013

Hiv/Aids Serostatus Disclosure And Stigma In Asian And Pacific Islander Women : A Call For Intersectionality In The Treatment Of Depression, Andrea L. Mize

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

In the United States the prevalence and incidence rates of Asian and Pacific Islander (AandPI) women with HIV/AIDS is increasing. As many as 1 in 3 may not know they are HIV positive. Existing literature using stigma theory revealed that AandPI HIV positive women can experience both positive and negative mental health effects from HIV serostatus disclosure. These findings are an important mental health issue as HIV serostatus disclosure has traditionally been encouraged for the benefit of those diagnosed and their kinship networks. The present study seeks to examine the correlation found in previous research between disclosure or nondisclosure of …

The Role Of Trauma In Hoarding : A Project Investigating The Role Of Trauma In The Expression Of Hoarding Disease As Well As Features Associated With Hoarding, Hannah L. Mills Sep 2013

The Role Of Trauma In Hoarding : A Project Investigating The Role Of Trauma In The Expression Of Hoarding Disease As Well As Features Associated With Hoarding, Hannah L. Mills

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Hoarding Disorder (HD) is characterized by a difficulty discarding possessions and leads to the accumulation of clutter, causing marked distress and impairment (Mataix-Cols, et al., 2010). HD has been an increasing area of research and public interest, though little is known about how it develops or factors that influence its expression (Mataiz-Cols, Fernandes de la Cruz, Nakoa, and Pertusa, 2011; Frost, Steketee, and Tolin, 2011). High frequency of trauma among people with hoarding behavior has been reported (Saxena et al. 2011; Cromer, Schmidt, and Murphy, 2007; Hartl, Duffany, Allen, Steketee, and Frost, 2005), but none have examined it in detail. …

The purpose of this study is to inform clinical social work practice with immigrants and their families in a range of areas including the experience of cultural identity development and the process and effects of acculturation in the U.S. Audiotaped in-person and telephone semi-structured interviews elicited participant perceptions of, and connection to, a range of aspects of Haitian culture. Participants' experience of dominant U.S. cultural views of Haiti and the Haitian people, understanding of …

The Effects Of Maternal Adrenalectomy On The Sexual Behavior Of Male Rat Offspring, David Eliason, Dr. Reuben W. Rhees Sep 2013

The Effects Of Maternal Adrenalectomy On The Sexual Behavior Of Male Rat Offspring, David Eliason, Dr. Reuben W. Rhees

Journal of Undergraduate Research

It has been shown that several structures in the mammalian brain exhibit differences between males and females. These variations are referred to as sexually dimorphic areas. In recent years, study of the brain has demonstrated the complex interconnections between the sexual behavior of individuals and the neurological functions of the brain. It is now considered appropriate to refer to the brain as a part of the reproductive system in reference to the determining factor it plays in development of the sexual organs and in regulating the behavior of the organism. The mammalian fetus originally possesses the potential to become either …

Testing Preschoolers: My First Shot At Empirical Research, Miriam Carey, Dr. Gawain Wells Sep 2013

Testing Preschoolers: My First Shot At Empirical Research, Miriam Carey, Dr. Gawain Wells

Journal of Undergraduate Research

About a year ago I signed up to be part of the Y-OQ research group. I didn’t really know what the Y-OQ was, I just wanted some research experience. The professor in charge grinned slyly when I asked what I could do to help. He said, “We could really use your help doing data entry.” I heard a few other students chuckle at the sound of his words and I wondered what was so funny. Then a graduate student led me through the rat maze psychology building to a dimly lit room in the basement. He sat me down at …

Pioneers In Hong Kong: A Research Summary, Sarah Burnham, Spencer Palmer Sep 2013

Pioneers In Hong Kong: A Research Summary, Sarah Burnham, Spencer Palmer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When I set out to research pioneer stories of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in Hong Kong, I was rather naive about the amount of work involved. I assumed that it would be a relatively simple matter to gather a base history from the library and then meet with and invite people to share their stories. It sounded simple in theory but was much more complex in reality.

Homo Religiosus? Religion And Immigrant Subjectivities, David Ley, Justin Kh Tse Sep 2013

Homo Religiosus? Religion And Immigrant Subjectivities, David Ley, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Once ignored in national and international public policy, religion has made a comeback as policymakers have noticed the significance of the resurgence of religion, especially due to migration flows. While laudatory of these developments, this chapter specifies the need for a theological reading of the migrant religious practitioner as homo religiosus. First, we describe the social geographies of immigrant religion in an international context, drawing attention to the vibrancy of religious devotion, especially Christianity from the global south, among migrant groups. Second, we re-conceptualise religious belief through the theoretical work of John Milbank and Charles Taylor as they recuperate a …

Meta-Analysis Of The Book: "Privilege, Power And Difference" -- A Review Of The Dimensions Of Institutional Segregation As Psychological Paradox, Alexej Savreux Sep 2013

Meta-Analysis Of The Book: "Privilege, Power And Difference" -- A Review Of The Dimensions Of Institutional Segregation As Psychological Paradox, Alexej Savreux

Sociology Student Papers and Presentations

This paper analyzes and synthesizes concepts and alternative perspectives of sociologist and author Allan G. Johnson’s book “Privilege, Power and Difference” through the lens of the sociological imagination. The first phase of the review addresses the different chapter dimensions of the concept (or purported abstraction) of ‘inequality’ as social, economic and historical concretion. The model is later elaborated upon and the work extrapolated into a meta-theoretical analysis of the first seven chapters of the textbook. By identifying and reviewing the principal points within the book, we present a multitude of vantage points by which continuation and assimilation of material in …

Fashion Vs. Function In Cultural Evolution: The Case Of Dog Breed Popularity, Stefano Ghirlanda, Alberto Acerbi, Harold A. Herzog, James A. Serpell Sep 2013

Fashion Vs. Function In Cultural Evolution: The Case Of Dog Breed Popularity, Stefano Ghirlanda, Alberto Acerbi, Harold A. Herzog, James A. Serpell

Pets Collection

We investigate the relationship between characteristics of dog breeds and their popularity between years 1926 and 2005. We consider breed health, longevity, and behavioral qualities such as aggressiveness, trainability, and fearfulness. We show that a breed’s overall popularity, fluctuations in popularity, and rates of increase and decrease around popularity peaks show typically no correlation with these breed characteristics. One exception is the finding that more popular breeds tend to suffer from more inherited disorders. Our results support the hypothesis that dog breed popularity has been primarily determined by fashion rather than function.

Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

On Learning And Unlearning, Katherine M. Patterson Sep 2013

On Learning And Unlearning, Katherine M. Patterson

SURGE

I remember passing our lunch lady–the nice one with a big bleach-blond afro. She was perched on an elementary-school-sized desk, eyes fixated to the television. I glanced at the screen on the way into my classroom while my teacher hesitated in the hallway, whispering to the other adults. She reentered the room a few minutes later to explain.

In the following months, my television provided me with one of the most formative, practical and comprehensive educational experiences of my life. First it was vocabulary building, with the words like “hi-jacker,” and “terrorist.” Then it was physics, learning that inertia is …

The Effects Of Gender On Language Perception In The Classroom, Rachel Hansen, Dr. Wendy Baker Sep 2013

The Effects Of Gender On Language Perception In The Classroom, Rachel Hansen, Dr. Wendy Baker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The creation of adaptive learning environments is crucial for students’ success. Teachers often use written feedback to encourage improvement in their students’ work. The manner and content of feedback greatly affects how it is perceived (Brinko, 1993). Also, studies have shown for almost two decades that gender affects how student learn (Kolb, 1976). For example, female students perceive their learning environment more positively (den Brok, Fisher, Rickards & Bull, 2006) and are more likely to hold mastery over performance goals and to refrain from disruptive classroom behavior than are males. (Kenney-Benson, Pomerantz, Ryan & Patrick, 2006). Roberts (1991) argued that …

A Response To Douglas Davies’S Mormon Culture Of Salvation The Latter-Day Saint Doctrine Of Grace, Cory Walker, Dr. David Paulsen Sep 2013

A Response To Douglas Davies’S Mormon Culture Of Salvation The Latter-Day Saint Doctrine Of Grace, Cory Walker, Dr. David Paulsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The doctrine of salvation by grace has been a much discussed and differently interpreted aspect of Latter-day Saint theology both within the general membership of the Church and outside it. A recent, in-depth treatment of Latter-day Saint views and cultural traditions regarding salvation, written by prominent religious scholar Douglas J. Davies, discussed the Mormon understanding of grace and provided a wonderful academic opportunity to explore the issue using the foil of an informed outsider opinion with which to set out the Latter-day Saint doctrine of grace from Joseph Smith to the present. Dr. David Paulsen and his staff prepared a …

My experience as an ORCA grant recipient has been an interesting one. The focus and direction of my work has changed a few times as I have attempted to direct my efforts towards meaningful research that would be useful to the greater body of work that is being produced by my mentor. During this process I have experienced frustration as I have realized my personal limitations and the limitations of the subject matter. I have also experienced success as I have narrowed my topic down to focus on a consistent vein of thought running through LDS theology on the topic …

Joseph Smith And The Social Trinity: An Analysis And Defense Of The Social Model Of The Godhead, Brett D. Mcdonald, Dr. David L. Paulsen Sep 2013

Joseph Smith And The Social Trinity: An Analysis And Defense Of The Social Model Of The Godhead, Brett D. Mcdonald, Dr. David L. Paulsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Excluding his claim to the resumption of public revelation and its, corollary, the re-opening of the canon, perhaps no other Mormon doctrine has received as much criticism as the conception and formulation of the trinity by Joseph Smith and his successors. Ever since Joseph declared that God the Father and Jesus Christ had appeared to him as two distinct personages in the spring of 1820, the cry of tritheism from Mormonism’s detractors has been both loud and persistent. For instance, early on, British theologian T.W.P. Taylder, asserted that Mormon doctrine was tri-theistic because it denies the “unity of the Godhead.” …
