Framing Caste Tracing The Interrelationship Of Caste And Identity In India, Scott Albrecht, Dr. Ralph Brown Sep 2013

Framing Caste Tracing The Interrelationship Of Caste And Identity In India, Scott Albrecht, Dr. Ralph Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I posit here that three variables must be considered when discussing the devolvement of caste as the dominant element of Indian society: economic organization, the secularization of caste identities, and the disproportionate distribution of power as a remnant of the traditional economic arrangement. By tapping into the rationality of caste in terms of the human experience we can better understand the interrelationship of these variables and caste. I further argue that because caste roles and caste identities are essentially unique phenomena, caste identities may be perpetuated indefinitely where caste roles have become antiquated and unenforceable.

Making Time In Boise: Embracing The Befuddling City, Jaap Vos

Urban Studies and Community Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Boise has a penchant for being listed. In 2011, CNN Money listed Boise as the third-best retirement city. Last year, Forbes ranked Boise as the second-best city in the United States in which to raise a family. In July, the San Francisco Chronicle published an article stating that Boise was the seventh safest city in the U.S. According to the city’s economic development team, since 2008, Boise has made it onto more than 50 top-10 lists. While some of these lists are just plain silly, others are an indication of the qualities that make Boise a remarkable city. And although …

Two theory chapters utilize concepts from existential theory and Winnicott's true and selves to explore the phenomenon more deeply. A discussion chapter critiques these theories and offers suggestions for further research, as well as implementation suggestions for the clinician based on the research and theories presented.

The Hidden Stem Economy: The Surprising Diversity Of Jobs Requiring Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math Knowledge, Jonathan Rothwell

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

Policy and businesses leaders have argued that there is a shortage of highly educated workers in professional occupations related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Critics have countered that Ph.D scientists often face a difficult academic labor market and do not necessarily earn higher wages than other professionals. Yet, both sides of the STEM debate have been relying on an ill-defined definition of STEM work. Using a detailed survey of worker knowledge requirements, this research project redefines STEM jobs based on the level of knowledge required in STEM fields to perform occupations. The results uncover two facts previously unrecognized …

Isaiah In The Book Of Mormon And Old Testament: A Comparison In Language Usage, John Larsen, Dr. Allen Manning

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The similarities between the Bible and the Book of Mormon have often been pointed out by Scholars and critics alike. My research was to compare language similarities in the two texts linguistically. For twelve chapters in the Book of Mormon the text runs almost exactly parallel to that in the book of Isaiah. I intended to isolate directly the differences in the two texts and attempt to classify them linguistically. Through this classification I hoped to discover possible explanation and any symmetry or system to the changes. The changes would also be analyzed in terms of period language usage to …

Ottoman And European Influence In The Ninteenth-Century Bridal Collection Of The Azem Palace, Damascus, Syria, Julianne Parker Sep 2013

Ottoman And European Influence In The Ninteenth-Century Bridal Collection Of The Azem Palace, Damascus, Syria, Julianne Parker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1829, Ottoman Emperor Mahmud II issued a proclamation mandating that all men under his rule must replace their traditional clothing with the “modern” European-style jacket and trousers.1 The interest and appeal of Europe had never been so publicly sanctioned in Ottoman history. The western influence was perhaps most greatly felt in outlying provinces like Damascus, whose government had long been semi-autonomous under local governors, including the Azem family, residents of the Azem Palace. As European entrepreneurs, statesmen, and tourists continued to visit Damascus, local Damascenes inevitably began to imitate these exotic foreigners. Fashion was one of the easiest ways …

Reaction To Amendment Of Article 27 In Rural Guanajuato, Brandon H. Lee, Dr. F. Lamond Tullis

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Modifications to article 27 of the Mexican Constitution made in January 1992 tremendously altered the land tenure system in rural Mexico. These modifications allow ejidatarios (landholders who possess a usufruct title to the land) to obtain an individual title to their land through a government program known as PROCEDE (the Program for Certification of Ejidal Rights and Titling of Urban House Lots). Having this title allows for the sale, purchase, or rental of lands. It also permits joint ventures with domestic and foreign private investors. Prior to the amendment, farmers claimed usufruct use of the land granted by the 1917 …

Exploring The Effects Of Sexual Desire Discrepancy Among Married Couples, Brian J. Willoughby, Adam M. Farero, Dean M. Busby

Faculty Publications

Previous studies have found associations between the individual discrepancy of desired sexual frequency and actual sexual frequency and relational outcomes among premarital couples. The present study extended this research by using a sample of 1,054 married couples to explore how actor and partner individual sexual desire discrepancy (SDD) scores were associated with relationship satisfaction, stability, communication, and conflict during marriage. All participants took an online survey which assessed both couple sexual dynamics and relationship outcomes. Findings suggested that higher actor individual SDD was generally associated with negative relational outcomes, including lower reported relationship satisfaction, stability, and more reported couple conflict. …

Build It—And Advocate For It—And They Will Come: Lessons From A Collaborative Project In Archives Advocacy And Program Development, Jodi Allison-Bunnell, Linda Morton-Keithley, Elizabeth Knight

Journal of Western Archives

Libraries at small- and mid-sized academic institutions continue to re-define themselves as journal and monograph collections go online, budgets and staffing remain flat or reduced, and value to student learning and the institutional mission needs to be apparent. This all spells opportunity for archival programs which, with a strong focus on advocacy and daylighting formerly hidden collections of unique content, can re-invigorate the library and spotlight the active role today's service- and user-oriented archives can play in supporting student research, fostering ties with constituents, and ensuring the preservation of an institution's stories and history. A recently-completed National Historical Publications and …

An Economist's View Of The Commerce Clause, John H. Beck Sep 2013

An Economist's View Of The Commerce Clause, John H. Beck

Economics Faculty Scholarship

In the course of this lecture, I will review how the courts have interpreted the commerce clause. I will also express an opinion – what might be called a “strict interpretation” – about how the commerce clause ought to be interpreted from a legal standpoint, although as an economist I have no professional expertise to do so. However, as an economist I do have expertise in analyzing what economists refer to as “market failures,” situations in which free markets may fail to achieve a theoretical ideal allocation of resources and government intervention may lead to a better outcome. Economists have …
