Female Tenure-Track Professors And Their Perceived Satisfaction Levels In Romantic Relationships, Brianna N. Meehan Sep 2013

Female Tenure-Track Professors And Their Perceived Satisfaction Levels In Romantic Relationships, Brianna N. Meehan

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This empirical study surveyed seventy-six female professors who hold tenure-track positions at eleven eastern Pennsylvania colleges and universities. The participants ranged in age from 20's to 60's and varied in race. While there is literature regarding women's relationship satisfaction and job satisfaction, there is a lack of literature about the personal lives of this specific population in relation to their career demands. The study was designed to investigate this population's perceived satisfaction levels in romantic relationships and to determine the relationship statuses of the group that was surveyed. Grounded theory methodology was used in order to generate an understanding of …

Learning From Lesbian Non-Gestational Parents : Contributions To A Changing World, Amy B. Morse Sep 2013

Learning From Lesbian Non-Gestational Parents : Contributions To A Changing World, Amy B. Morse

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explored narratives of lesbian non-gestational parents as they reflected on how they planned the stages of building a family, experienced their partner's pregnancy, and adapted to parenthood. The study delved into issues of personal and social identity as these shifted during this important period in family life. The present inquiry contributes to our gaps in knowledge about how planned lesbian-led families take shape and specifically about the experiences of non-gestational parents as they engage in each stage from lesbian partner to lesbian parent. This study examines ways how non-gestational parents cultivate their family roles, explores considerations of …

The Effectiveness Of Psychodrama For Adolescents Who Have Experienced Trauma, Corrine E. Mertz

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study focuses on the effectiveness of psychodrama as a treatment for adolescents who have experienced trauma. This study looked extensively at adolescent trauma and three treatment frameworks designed to treat it, The Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, Attachment Self Regulation and Competency, and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This study also looked at psychodrama and psychodrama frameworks that are intended for use with trauma survivors. Psychodrama is an action- based treatment framework, where clients engage in therapeutic enactments. The effectiveness of psychodrama was researched through qualitative interviews with seven clinicians who practice psychodrama with adolescents. Participants were asked specific questions …

Healthcare Narratives Across The Generations And Their Impact On Contemporary Healthcare Practices Of Young African American Women, Elizabeth Y. Love Sep 2013

Healthcare Narratives Across The Generations And Their Impact On Contemporary Healthcare Practices Of Young African American Women, Elizabeth Y. Love

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

African American women are more likely than those in any other ethnic group to die from heart disease, cancer, and stroke and are less likely to seek treatment. The literature suggests that healthcare patters are passed down through generations and that familial influences have a significant impact on healthcare behaviors, independent of other factors known to influence healthcare access such as poverty. The aim of this exploratory study was to pilot an innovative, multi-modal protocol designed to facilitate a discussion about personal healthcare narratives and the influence of previous generations on health-related attitudes. Methods: convenience sampling recruited seven young African …

Cannabinoid Modulation Of Reinforcement Maintained By Stimulation Of The Medial Forebrain Bundle In C57bl/6j Mice, Jason Wiebelhaus Sep 2013

Cannabinoid Modulation Of Reinforcement Maintained By Stimulation Of The Medial Forebrain Bundle In C57bl/6j Mice, Jason Wiebelhaus

Theses and Dissertations

Cannabinoid agonists, including marijuana containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), are found rewarding by humans. In addition to human self-reports and experimental studies that show marijuana is rewarding, contributions from preclinical studies also have implicated cannabinoid receptors in reward-motivated behavior. One way to assess these preclinical effects of cannabinoids is intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS), where an animal performs a response to receive electrical stimulation of a specific brain area or circuit known to be involved in reward. Drugs of abuse, such as psychomotor stimulants, facilitate responding for ICSS. While a few studies have shown facilitating effects of cannabinoids in rats, several have shown the …

Rise Up From Fragments: The Life And Arts Of The Virgin Anasazi, Cynthia Lee Killian Young, Dr. Marti L. Allen Sep 2013

Rise Up From Fragments: The Life And Arts Of The Virgin Anasazi, Cynthia Lee Killian Young, Dr. Marti L. Allen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The adventure of planning and creating a museum exhibition began September 2003. While other museums may take a year or more to install a series of exhibits, we at the Museum of Peoples and Cultures (MPC) were able to create a professional exhibition in eight months. My whole project centers on a collection of Virgin or Western Anasazi artifacts that Mr. Lanny Talbot retrieved from his lands. The Talbot collection is one of the largest collections of Western Anasazi pottery allegedly found from one site.

The Situation Of Burmese Migrants In Thailand, Thelma Young, Dr. Valerie Hudson Sep 2013

The Situation Of Burmese Migrants In Thailand, Thelma Young, Dr. Valerie Hudson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Burma has been ruled by an authoritarian military junta since 1962. In 1988, the military brutally repressed the democracy movement that university students started, then spread throughout the entire country. The situation has severely deteriorated under the military, with Burma receiving the category of ‘Least Developed Country.’ The junta now known as the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) implements many policies that constrict all aspects of civilian’s lives- there is no freedom of speech, people cannot gather in large numbers, people are routinely forced to work in government projects for no pay, education is strictly limited, universities are closed, …

Tokenism In Non-Native English Speakers: A Pilot Study, David A. Shwalb, Dr. Niwako Yamawaki Sep 2013

Tokenism In Non-Native English Speakers: A Pilot Study, David A. Shwalb, Dr. Niwako Yamawaki

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Over the past decade the number of international students enrolled in colleges and universities in the United States has increased dramatically (Bollag, 2004). Currently, over 572,509 international students are attending American colleges and universities (Bollag, 2004), with approximately 2,000 at Brigham Young University (Light, 2004). Researchers acknowledge the important relationship between English proficiency and academic success for international students, but often fail to recognize many other possible obstacles to the academic success of international students. The purpose of this study was to identify and gain a better understanding of one such issue, specifically the negative impact token status may have …

Disabled And Unemployed: Employment Variations In Europe, Cindy Otis, Dr. Wade Jacoby Sep 2013

Disabled And Unemployed: Employment Variations In Europe, Cindy Otis, Dr. Wade Jacoby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

According to the 1996 European Community Household Panel (ECHP) survey, disabled people account for an estimated 14.5 percent of the total working-age population of the European Union, of which 42.6 percent are employed (Van Lin et al. 2001). This means that of a population of 65 million people, roughly 30 million are employed. The European Union’s (EU) core disability strategy has a four-fold emphasis aimed at increasing the civil rights of people with disabilities. These emphasis include improving co-operation between the Member States, encouraging exchange and development of information and good practice in the EU, raising awareness of disability issues, …

The Fcs And The Usda: The Informational Efficiency Of The Federal Farm System Bond Market, T. Lance Toler, Dr. Farrell E. Jensen Sep 2013

The Fcs And The Usda: The Informational Efficiency Of The Federal Farm System Bond Market, T. Lance Toler, Dr. Farrell E. Jensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) prepares reports on the income and financial stability of American farmers and agricultural organizations. If the information in USDA reports on the financial stability of American agriculture is already known by the markets, then the prices of Federal Farm Credit System (FCS) Bank bonds, which are related to the credit risk associated with American agriculture, will not be affected by the release of the reports. If the information provided in the reports is new to the market, however, significant changes in FCS bond prices should immediately be seen as the new information is …

Suzhou Urban Developments And Economic Growth The Impact Of Special Economic Zones And The Light Rail System, Songjie Li, Dr. Richard Jackson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Suzhou, China is an ancient Chinese city facing rapid and wrenching changes. Located in the Delta of the Yangtze River some fifty miles northwest of Shanghai, it is famous for its classical gardens and numerous canals that connect to the famous Grand Canal and Tai Lake. Suzhou is frequently mislabeled as the “Venice of the East”, but Chinese people more likely to call it the “Paradise on Earth”. Written historical records indicate that people started to live in Suzhou area over 4000 years ago, it is one of the oldest settlements in Yangtze River basin.

Making Decisions About Migration: The American Dream With A Mexican Accent, Chris Sutter, Lynn England Sep 2013

Making Decisions About Migration: The American Dream With A Mexican Accent, Chris Sutter, Lynn England

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Mexican immigration to the United States is a noteworthy phenomenon, not void of controversy. Accusations and tensions have risen on both sides of the line in past months. The issue is not an ephemeral one. There are currently more than 20 million Mexicans living in this country, according to the 2000 US census. Numerous studies have been done to understand migration. Studies that focus solely on economics, however, may fail to put a human face on Mexican immigration. Behind the dollars and cents are real people making real decisions about leaving their home and country to try their luck in …

Research Brief: "Iraq And Afghanistan Veterans’ Experiences Living With Their Parents After Separation From The Military", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This research examines the experiences of veterans who live with their parents after separation from the military and prepares parents and family to be more knowledgeable and meet the needs of returning veterans. It was found that veterans were better suited to life after military duty with proper emotional support from family, and that providing support and educations for families would aid this transition. In future research, an emphasis on studying a more diverse cohort of male and female veterans as well as their parents is beneficial.

The Repository As Data (Re) User: Hand Curating For Replication, Limor Peer

Yale Day of Data

On August 31, 2010, Yale University’s Institution for Social and Policy Studies launched the ISPS Data Archive (http://isps.yale.edu/research/data).

The motivation for the Archive was to capture and preserve intellectual output produced by scholars affiliated with ISPS, to share data and associated research output, and to link to publications and projects.

The Archive was developed as a pilot for the university (under the Office for Digital Assets and Infrastructure). It provides a model for customized platforms that meet the needs of one research unit, and otherwise relies entirely on Yale IT and library resources (no third party vendors or tools).

The …

Orca, Erin Huff Sep 2013

Orca, Erin Huff

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My ORCA project changed considerably from the time I applied for the grant, to when I stepped off of the airplane back in the U.S. after researching in Ghana. I initially wanted to study elder care in Ghana, but after reviewing the resources I had available to me in Ghana, I decided to study the experiences of Ghanaian diabetics. My research – which I reported in a paper entitled “Knowledge, Pain, and Poverty: Insights from Sixteen Ghanaian Diabetics” – sought to chronicle the daily experiences diabetics face in Ghana. Specifically, I was looking to see what kind of health care …

Discussing Gender Equality In An Unequal Environment: Misrepresentations Of Life By Tamilian Women, Evan Carpenter, Dr. Julie Hartley Sep 2013

Discussing Gender Equality In An Unequal Environment: Misrepresentations Of Life By Tamilian Women, Evan Carpenter, Dr. Julie Hartley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In May through September of 2005 I shot a documentary film about social progress for women in a village just outside the city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, India. The original purpose was to learn how the social and domestic roles of a family are affected by a specific development program aimed at helping women become financially independent through microlending and vocational training. What I ended up with instead was an experiment in visual anthropology and an unusual story about the day to day lives of Tamil women and the other stories they tell to misrepresent their experiences.

Relatedness And The Symbolic Substance Of Kinship Among The K’Iche’, Stephen Brady, Dr. Janis Nuckolls Sep 2013

Relatedness And The Symbolic Substance Of Kinship Among The K’Iche’, Stephen Brady, Dr. Janis Nuckolls

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Kinship studies was a central concern of socio-cultural anthropology for decades. The centrality of kinship within the discipline was due to the traditional anthropological practice of studying social structure among small-scale societies. Social anthropologists found that kinship provides people with an effective form of organization in the absence of a state. In many small-scale societies, descent determines the economic, political, religious, and social position of individuals. By the second half of the twentieth century kinship studies faced a rapid decline within social anthropology, in part because some anthropologists found that kinship studies were based on Western presuppositions about the biogenetic …

Facilitating Effective Training Programs For Traditional Medical Practitioners In Ghana: Guidelines Based On Prior Successes And Current Attitudes, Amy Lamprecht, Dr. William C. Olsen Sep 2013

Facilitating Effective Training Programs For Traditional Medical Practitioners In Ghana: Guidelines Based On Prior Successes And Current Attitudes, Amy Lamprecht, Dr. William C. Olsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The medical system extant in Ghana today is a complex one made up of many different health care delivery sectors. As is often the case wherever competing systems of medicine exist, the traditional and Western medical systems that participate in health care in Ghana are not effectively integrated and do not cooperate at a level where efficacious communication between the two groups can be facilitated. In a nation where most of the government focus and funding for health care is directed towards Western medicine but where seventy percent of the population relies on traditional medicine, the need for an effective …

Principles Of Family-Centered City Planning Achieving True Mixed-Income Housing In New Urbanist Developments, David Gay, Dr. Richard Jackson Sep 2013

Principles Of Family-Centered City Planning Achieving True Mixed-Income Housing In New Urbanist Developments, David Gay, Dr. Richard Jackson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

New Urbanism, or traditional neighborhood design (TND), is a growing trend in American real estate development. It is characterized by mixed-uses, a variety of housing sizes, and pedestrian-oriented streetscapes. It often encourages more efficient land uses, which, in turn, makes way for better transportation planning and less congested traffic patterns. These designs are more akin to pre-WWII development than to the typical contemporary subdivisions. New Urbanism aims to be more family friendly, especially in terms of affordability, but due to several underlying factors, these developments often demand an artificially large cost from homebuyers, excluding many potential residents who would most …

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this study was to extend the climate record of the Wasatch Front Area in order to assess drought along the Wasatch Front. In order to accomplish this, tree-ring analysis was done using Limber Pine (Pinus flexilus) trees from the rocky, north face of Mount Olympus, Wasatch Mountains.

Vietnamese Migration To Cambodia, Kyle Larsen, Dr. Chad Emmett Sep 2013

Vietnamese Migration To Cambodia, Kyle Larsen, Dr. Chad Emmett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Vietnamese migration to Cambodia is unique because, unlike most immigrants who seek sanctuary in a nation more economically and socially stable countries, the Vietnamese in Cambodia face many worse conditions than in Vietnam. In many ways, Cambodia is much less-developed than Vietnam in terms of GDP, literacy, poverty rates, and more. The traditional rivalry between Cambodia and Vietnam exacerbates the situation, which results in violence and social ostracism to the immigrants. According to the 2005 CIA Factbook, the Vietnamese make up five percent of the Cambodian national population of more than 13 million. Virtually all of them have migrated since …

Sex Differences, Cheryll Garn Sep 2013

Sex Differences, Cheryll Garn

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study investigates whether males and females use distinct brain systems while performing a picture naming task. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that in some cognitive processing domains, such as spoken language comprehension, males and females differ in terms of brain hemisphere activation, with a tendency for stronger left hemisphere lateralization in males. The purpose of this study is to test whether an analogous hemispheric difference (or other systematic difference) might be found between males and females in a picture naming task, which includes visual and verbal processing components. Brain activation differences were assessed using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) …

Dependent Civil Society: The Círculos Bolivarianos In Venezuela, David Hansen, Dr. Kirk Hawkins Sep 2013

Dependent Civil Society: The Círculos Bolivarianos In Venezuela, David Hansen, Dr. Kirk Hawkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

An important topic in political science is the role of civil society, voluntary organizations separate from the family and the state, in creating a democratic and pluralistic society that is able to effectively organize citizen participation to work through disagreement and conflicting interests in a peaceful manner. Social scientists are also engaged in the study of charismatic leaders and their effects upon political discourse, societal organization, and economic structure. Because a charismatic leader’s appeal arises primarily from his ability to gain the faith of followers that he embodies the will of the people, one important source of information about the …

The Kingdom Of Tonga And The Unwritten Order, Doug Farr Sep 2013

The Kingdom Of Tonga And The Unwritten Order, Doug Farr

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this paper I will address the unwritten order that exists in the highly stratified society of the Kingdom of Tonga. The relationship between power and rank in Tonga has created informal laws that govern the people. These informal laws, as well as a struggle for power, have created a division between the elite class and the powerless class, and this division is generating an uprising of the powerless class. I argue that the powerless class may win independent battles against the informal laws, however they will not defeat it completely, as this system has proven to be a testing …

Lost In Translations: Defining Us Foreign Policy In China, Katherine Chipman, Eric Hyer Sep 2013

Lost In Translations: Defining Us Foreign Policy In China, Katherine Chipman, Eric Hyer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The time period from 1947 to 1949 presented a unique turning point in Sino-American relations. Harry S. Truman had the opportunity to formalize relations with the emerging Communist Chinese State but choose not to. In the following time span of 20 years, the US faced intense conflict with the Chinese including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Spartly Island incident. Today Taiwan is still a major point of contention between the US and China and no doubt would lead these two nations to war if tension escalated. These and other conflicts might have been avoided had Truman not …

Investigation Of Child Headed Households In Mozambique, Africa, Gerald Cochran, Jini Roby Sep 2013

Investigation Of Child Headed Households In Mozambique, Africa, Gerald Cochran, Jini Roby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Child headed households (CHHs) are homes lead by “…children [who] live alone and manage the household without guidance and economic support from adults” (Aspaas, 1999, p. 202). This definition may or may not exclude adults as residents of the home. Some CHHs have adults residing in the home, but the child most certainly is the leader and the responsible one of the home. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has spread across the African continent causing children to be left as orphans and/or left to care for themselves and others (Foster, Shakespeare, Chinemana, Jackson, Gregson, Marange, & Mashumba, 1995). However, HIV/AIDS is not …
