Crossing Bridges Of Understanding: An Interactive Tutorial For Humanities 201, Rebecca Petersen, Dr. Michael Call
Crossing Bridges Of Understanding: An Interactive Tutorial For Humanities 201, Rebecca Petersen, Dr. Michael Call
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My goal in creating this tutorial was to “bring to life” some of the sites and treasures studied in the Humanities 201-202 sequence, stimulating student’s interest in the topics and providing support to the faculty teaching the courses. I feel that the module I completed successfully achieves that goal. I created a module, currently accessible in the Humanities PC Computing Lab, entitled, “Vezelay: A Romanesque Masterpiece.”

Pakistan’s popular economic discourse has been rightly focused on short-run problems. Will we be able to end load-shedding in the country? Will the IMF agreement cause more hardships than benefits to the people? Will the inflation rate begin to rise again? Will the rupee keep on tumbling? These are legitimate questions that need to be addressed. The government of the day also devotes its attention towards these problems as the test of their success lies in finding solution to these issues.
Neglected due to this pre-occupation with short-term problems are the issues that will impinge upon the future of this …

Data Information Literacy Symposium
This poster describes a drop-in data management and visualization workshop under development. The workshop, scheduled for October 2013, will be aimed at graduate student researchers but open to all. The authors have mapped the core competencies for data information literacy outlined in "Determining Data Information Literacy Needs: A Study of Students and Research Faculty" (2011) with the workshop learning outcomes. Workshop planning considerations, content, and problems faced are described below. While this poster describes a workshop being developed at Indiana University, the authors hope this model will prove informative for other institutions looking to create similar workshops pairing data management …

A Scalable Approach To Data Management Education Of Graduate Students, Jon Jeffryes, Lisa Johnston
Data Information Literacy Symposium
As part of the Data Information Literacy (DIL) project, funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the University of Minnesota (UMN) Libraries partnered with Purdue University, Cornell University, and the University of Oregon to identify:
- What data management and curation skills are needed by graduate students in the sciences to take advantage of opportunities in e-science?
- How can academic librarians contribute their expertise in information organization, dissemination and preservation to better serve modern science?
The UMN team worked with a structures research group in the Civil Engineering Department.

The Many Shades Of Open Access: The History And Future Of Open Access Initiatives At Purdue University, David Scherer
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
For an area with the common goal of providing free online public access to scholarship and research, the ways in which Open Access are accomplished can be very different. Just as there is green, blue, yellow, and gold open access, there can also be different “colors” of open access activities and initiatives. This presentation addresses some of the open access initiatives currently in use and in development at Purdue University to increase access to scholarship. Presented at the 3rd Annual Great Lakes e-Summit Conference, September 23, 2013, Oregon, Ohio.
Applying And Evaluating The Astm Standard Guide To Quality Assurance In Translation And Localization, Carina Leticia Klemetz Aceves
Applying And Evaluating The Astm Standard Guide To Quality Assurance In Translation And Localization, Carina Leticia Klemetz Aceves
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The ASTM Standard Guide to Quality Assurance in Translation (the name has been shortened as of late) defines the process of translation, and explains among other things the concept of “translation specifications.” Those are parameters that have to be considered in order to ensure that the product resulting from a translation is such that satisfies all parties. The Guide defines a “quality translation” as one that meets the specifications previously defined and discussed by all parties, as opposed to the traditional concept of “one best translation.” There would, therefore, not be one best translation to any given text but there …

The first step in meeting the goals outlined in my proposal was to download the source code for the Festival speech synthesis engine. Festival is an open source modular synthesis engine built on a Scheme backbone. I ported the make files to run with my current version of the GNU compiler collection (GCC) compiler and built and installed the engine.

The Determinants Of School Attendance On The American Frontier: The Case Of The Territory Of Utah In 1870, Tally Shae Payne, Dr. Clayne L. Pope
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In his study, “Education Among the Mormons,” Frederick S. Buchanan noted that “when we examine development of public schooling in Utah during the half century which elapsed between the initial settlement by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and the granting of statehood in 1896, it is not obvious that a smooth developmental process of growth occurred.”1 Traditional holds that early Mormon settlers were devoted to education and quickly built a strong schooling system for the youth, yet Frederick S. Buchanan’s statement paints a more accurate picture of frontier education in Utah. This economic study used empirical evidence to test the differing …
