The Instrumental And Symbolic Dimensions Of Organisations' Image As An Employer: A Large-Scale Field Study On Employer Branding In Turkey, Greet Van Hoye, Turker Bas, Saartje Cromheecke, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Research on recruitment and employer branding has typically been situated in Western countries with predominantly individualistic cultures. The present study investigates the instrumental-symbolic framework for studying organisations' image and attraction as an employer in a non-Western collectivistic culture. In a large nationwide sample of Turkish university students, both instrumental (working conditions) and symbolic image dimensions (competence) were positively related to organisational attractiveness. Moreover, symbolic traits explained significant incremental variance beyond instrumental attributes and accounted for a greater amount of predictable variance. In addition, organisations were better differentiated from each other on the basis of symbolic image dimensions (sincerity and innovativeness) …

Nonparametric Dynamic Panel Data Models: Kernel Estimation And Specification Testing, Liangjun Su, Xun Lu
Research Collection School Of Economics
Motivated by the first-differencing method for linear panel data models, we propose a class of iterative local polynomial estimators for nonparametric dynamic panel data models with or without exogenous regressors. The estimators utilize the additive structure of the first-differenced model—the fact that the two additive components have the same functional form, and the unknown function of interest is implicitly defined as a solution of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. We establish the uniform consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimators. We also propose a consistent test for the correct specification of linearity in typical dynamic panel data …
Robust Virtual Implementation With Almost Complete Information, Takashi Kunimoto
Robust Virtual Implementation With Almost Complete Information, Takashi Kunimoto
Research Collection School Of Economics
Artemov, Kunimoto, and Serrano (2013a,b, henceforth, AKS) study amechanism design problem where arbitrary restrictions are placed on the setof first-order beliefs of agents. Calling these restrictions Δ, they adopt Δ-rationalizability (Battigalli and Siniscalchi (2003)) and show that Δ-incentivecompatibility and Δ-measurability are necessary and sufficient conditions forrobust virtual implementation. By appropriately defining Δ in order to restrictattention to complete information environments, I exploit the implicationsof AKS and show that the permissive implementation result of Abreu andMatsushima (1992a) is robust to how the underlying type space is specified. However, AKS need to fix a complete information environment throughouttheir analysis and therefore does not …

Merged Aggregate Nearest Neighbor Query Processing In Road Networks, Weiwei Sun, Chong Chen, Baihua Zheng, Chunan Chen, Liang Zhu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Aggregate nearest neighbor query, which returns a common interesting point that minimizes the aggregate distance for a given query point set, is one of the most important operations in spatial databases and their application domains. This paper addresses the problem of finding the aggregate nearest neighbor for a merged set that consists of the given query point set and multiple points needed to be selected from a candidate set, which we name as merged aggregate nearest neighbor(MANN) query. This paper proposes an effective algorithm to process MANN query in road networks based on our pruning strategies. Extensive experiments are conducted …

Many third party libraries are available to be downloaded and used. Using such libraries can reduce development time and make the developed software more reliable. However, developers are often unaware of suitable libraries to be used for their projects and thus they miss out on these benefits. To help developers better take advantage of the available libraries, we propose a new technique that automatically recommends libraries to developers. Our technique takes as input the set of libraries that an application currently uses, and recommends other libraries that are likely to be relevant. We follow a hybrid approach that combines association …
A Unified Model For Topics, Events And Users On Twitter, Qiming Diao, Jing Jiang
A Unified Model For Topics, Events And Users On Twitter, Qiming Diao, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the rapid growth of social media, Twitter has become one of the most widely adopted platforms for people to post short and instant message. On the one hand, people tweets about their daily lives, and on the other hand, when major events happen, people also follow and tweet about them. Moreover, people’s posting behaviors on events are often closely tied to their personal interests. In this paper, we try to model topics, events and users on Twitter in a unified way. We propose a model which combines an LDA-like topic model and the Recurrent Chinese Restaurant Process to capture …

Descriptions of 19th century literature can be limited because items may be out of print, hard to find, or undocumented. McCain Library and Archives at Southern Miss offers a limited selection of 19th century gift books and annuals; these books can be used to evaluate certain distinct characteristics regarding publishers, dates of publication, authors, and binding styles. This study can help to determine prominent genre characteristics for this era, which may be otherwise difficult to determine considering the scarcity of some of the titles and their editions.

Information access is considered critical to the public health workforce, which involves informatics, communication, analytic assessment, and health education (NN/LM Public Health Training Workgroup, 2004). Information-oriented outreach to the public health workforce is challenging to libraries because the public health workforce is made up of diverse health professions and public health personnel are not aware if key information resources are available to them (Cogdill, 2007). The National Library of Medicine (NLM) funded information outreach to the public health workforce projects in different periods of time, which altogether reflect challenges of providing public health professionals with access to electronic health information …

Ordinary And Poor People In 18th-Century Delaware, John Bedell, Gerald P. Scharfenberger
Ordinary And Poor People In 18th-Century Delaware, John Bedell, Gerald P. Scharfenberger
Northeast Historical Archaeology
The authors and their colleagues have recently carried out excavations at three 18th-century farm sites in central Delaware. The Augustine Creek South and Thomas Dawson Sites were both occupied by ordinary property owners in the 1730 to 1770 period. The Augustine Creek North Site was occupied from about 1750 to 1810 by unknown but probably poor tenants, possibly in two chronologically separate occupations. At all three sites, architectural remains and artifact deposits were found. Analysis of these sites has focused on the question of how fully ordinary and poor people participated in the social, economic, and intellectural changes of the …

Telling Time For Archaeologists, George L. Miller, Patricia Samford, Ellen Shlasko, Andrew Madsen
Northeast Historical Archaeology
This essay presents an accumulation of data on the dates for common types of artifacts found on archaeological sites from the historical period. These dates come from a variety of sources and include a mix of types of dates. These dates are based on such things as patents, pattern registrations, dates when commercial production began, estimates of when production stopped, and the popularity ranges for various styles of wares based on makers' marks. The introductory essay discusses some of the problems in the sources of the dates presented.

I Don't Want To Save Second Base, Chelsea E. Broe
SURGE
Tomorrow kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I have one request: This October, let’s not save second base.
I know, I know, you probably think this month is a good thing. If not for all of those T-shirts demanding every female-bodied person to feel their boobies, or the bracelets simply proclaiming “I love boobies,” people with breasts might forget that they even have them, or at the very least might start to think that their breasts are their own business. But the female body seems to be an object owned by the public, so we must always be reminded …

Cost Estimation Methods And Foundational Public Health Capabilities, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
The National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medine recently recommended that the federal government identify the components and costs of a "minimum package of public health services" and "foundational public health capabilities" that should be universally available across the U.S. This presentation reviews costing methods that can be used for identifying the costs required to establish "foundational public health capabilities" at state and local levels within the U.S. public health system.

Video journals, pioneered by JoVE, The Journal of Visualized Experiments (jove.com), are the next phase for publishing peer reviewed material. The platform and associated policies and procedures are specifically designed to effectively handle information in video format. JoVE is unique and important, both in proposing industry standards and challenging existing publishing practices and infrastructures. It is leading the way toward mainstreaming many other alternative media formats. This article will discuss some of the underlying considerations and implications.

A Framework Of Image Use Among Archaeologists, Architects, Art Historians And Artists, Joan E. Beaudoin
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
How and why images are used have important implications for the information systems, services and professionals involved in supporting image users. Images, like text, can be used for a number of reasons and these differences will influence fundamental aspects of the information transaction, such as what content is needed, where and how the information is sought, and the specific characteristics of the information that may be required. While research has begun to clarify image retrieval processes, basic issues surrounding how and why visual information is used have gone largely unstudied. This gap in the research led to the current study, …
