Job loss is a stressful life event that results in many changes in life. For some time, researchers have noted that there is a strong relationship between job loss and declines in health outcomes (Brenner 1979). When two things are related, such as job loss and poor health outcomes in this study, it is difficult to establish which one causes the other. That is, does job loss result in poor health or does poor health cause one to lose work? I set out to discover the substrates of the brain that are involved with chronic use of alcohol. My mentor Scott Steffensen had previously found that the GABA neurons in the midbrain, more specifically, in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the midbrain were susceptible to ethanol administration. This information is only a piece, however, of the puzzle that will eventually show the full picture of how ethanol disrupts our brain’s function. Public Policy Practicum Projects

A Boston based non-profit and a team of public policy PhD students engaged in several months of collaborative problem identification and goal setting focused on the effectiveness of the organization’s unique service delivery model. The nonprofit uses volunteer advocates and a goal-oriented process with no eligibility criteria to assist clients in distress. We collected administrative data, administered a survey, and conducted interviews to explore client well-being.

When the mind wanders away from the here-and-now toward imaginary events, it typically does so from one of two visual vantage points—a first-person perspective (i.e., the world is seen as it is in everyday life) or a third-person perspective (i.e., the world is seen from the viewpoint of an outside observer). While extant evidence has detailed consequences that ensue from the utilization of these distinct points of view, less is known about their more basic properties. The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

As digital library managers, we know our collections contain rich metadata, but data (or metadata) are encapsulated in these records and are accessible to users only when records containing them are retrieved in a search. This approach for managing data, although a common practice that extends far beyond digital collections, creates silos of data. Data associated with records is isolated and does not directly link to related data existing in other records. These silos hide valuable relationships among data, leaving to users the task of discovering these hidden connections.

To succeed in a dynamically changing world, animals need to predict their environments. Humans, in fact, exhibit such a strong desire for consistency that one of the most well-established findings in social psychology is the effort people make to maintain consistency among their beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. However, displeasure with unpredictability leads to a potential paradox, because a positive outcome that exceeds one’s expectations often leads to increased subjective value and positive affect, not the opposite. Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is one of the most common causes of death due to poisoning in the United States [1]. CO poisoning often results in neurological changes and motor and cognitive impairments due to anoxia and other related biomechanical mechanisms [2]. A major set of subcortical nuclei affected by CO poisoning are the basal ganglia, which play a key role in the regulation and coordination of movement, as well as some cognitive functions.

This study focuses on assessment procedures used to evaluate the treatments offered to severely and persistently mentally ill patients (SPMI). By way of definition, SPMI individuals: (1) number between one and five million (NAMHC, 1995; Arns, & Linney, 1993), (2) use a significant percentage of mental health care inpatient and community services ($148 billion annually in the United States), and (3) are diagnosed with mental disorders such as “schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression, autism, and obsessive compulsive disorder” (Carey, & Carey, 1999). Alcohol addiction has destroyed lives and communities for centuries. By understanding the mechanism of how our brain becomes addicted to alcohol we can better solve the problems this addiction creates. The current theory states that dopaminergic neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the midbrain help produce feelings of reward associated with alcohol use. These dopamine neurons are modulated by GABA neurons that form a feedback loop that can be stimulated via a brain structure called the internal capsule. The purpose of our proposed study was to record neuronal activity of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of male Wistar rats during self-administration of sucrose, which is a natural reward for rats. Although sucrose administration seems far from alcoholism, our goal was to see how these neurons act in during a behavior known to be pleasurable since past literature suggested that rats would not self-administer ethanol to dependence. Abstract. In this paper we model inflation and the nominal interest rate as a fractionally integrated, autoregressive, moving average (ARFIMA) process in order to test the theoretical proposition that nominal interest rates move one for one with inflation, thus, leaving the real interest rates unchanged; i.e. the Fisher effect. Using the necessary integration conditions first derived by Fisher and Seater (1993) and extended to fractional orders by Jensen et al. (forthcoming), we test the Fisher effect hypothesis in eleven developed countries; Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US.

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Since 2005, reported laser attacks from people on the ground directed towards arriving and departing aircraft have increased over 300%. A laser aimed at the windshield of an aircraft startles a pilot and may cause injury. This study determined empirical evidence of laser intensity in the flight deck and the potential for harm to the human eye at various distances. Results of this study revealed that relatively low-powered lasers had measured intensity levels through cockpit windshields at the 200 and 500 feet distances that may cause damage to crewmembers’ eyes according to standards established by the federal government. This study serves as a pilot study for a possible future study including the same variables. The purpose of the pilot study was to find a relationship in the college academic setting between academic self-efficacy, stress coping skills, and academic performance. Sixty-six undergraduate students, 17 male and 49 female, from a university in northwestern United States participated in the study. Stress was measured using the COPE Inventory (Carver, Scheier, & Weintraub, 1989). Self-efficacy was measured using the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (Chemers, Hu, & Garcia, 2001). Structural barriers that limit access to health care services for people with disabilities have been identified through qualitative studies; however, little is known about how patients with disabilities are accommodated in the clinical setting when a structural barrier is encountered. The purpose of this study was to identify how primary care medical practices in the United States accommodated people with disabilities when a barrier to service is encountered. Primary care practice administrators from the medical management organization were identified through the organization’s website.
