Sibling relationships have been recognized as important in facilitating the acquisition of emotional and social understanding and even assisting in cognitive development (Sanders, 2004). Sibling relationships that include one child with a disability are especially significant and worthy of study, as typical siblings tend to take on more responsibility for their siblings' care across their lifespan (Cicirelli, 1995). In attempting to understand these sibling relationships in childhood, past researchers have largely relied on parent report and behavioral observations. Dynamic new NGOs in the global South are resetting the human rights agenda. Popular movements inspired by human rights ideals are arising around the world to demand justice. New information technologies are creating the possibility of real global solidarity. The movement must adapt. Why must we explore the social practice of human rights?

In the 65 years since the U.N.’s Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the human rights community has become a standard-bearer of normative behavior, influencing development and humanitarian organizations, multinational corporations and philanthropists. Though the movement is viewed as honorable and admirable, the certainty of its mission can inhibit introspection; a natural tendency is to prioritize rather than challenge prevailing assumptions.

This paper examines the impact of Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) on children's educational progress, namely whether they are on track with their expected educational trajectory. It also examines cross-state variation in Medicaid policies and whether these different policies lead to different effects on the educational variable. With individual-level data from the Current Population Survey from years 1995 through 2006, along with information regarding each state's Medicaid policies, I seek to test the hypotheses that Medicaid/CHIP coverage will improve the likelihood of an individual being on track with his/her education and that states with qualitatively "better" …

This paper analyzes the effects of mergers and acquisitions on the profitability of both participating firms and competitor firms in the U.S. petroleum industry. It also identifies distinct economic conditions and firm specific characteristics that are correlated with the performance of the firm and the merger. The span of the study reaches from 1995-2011. It incorporates four unique, yet characteristic mergers of the domestic petroleum industry. The paper finds evidence that mergers and acquisitions affect the profitability of participating firms positively and competitor firms negatively. Argentine society is still struggling to reach consensus on what happened during the dictatorship of the 1970s and how that period should be remembered today. Using the editorials from a conservative newspaper, La Nación, this study looks at the language and metaphors employed to create an understanding of the last dictatorship. The editorials are from 1985, 1990, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2011 and each cover an important event related to what happened during the dictatorship. Understanding the effects of management practices on shifting relationships between structure and function over the course of ecosystem development should be a central goal of ecosystem restoration. Yet many of these relationships, such as those between plant biodiversity, spatial pattern of vegetation and community metabolism, remain poorly understood. In a decade-long experiment, we investigated the impact of different initial planting treatments and of nutrient enrichment on relationships among plant biodiversity, plant spatial pattern, and ecosystem function in restored wetland ecosystems. The popularity of intercollegiate football and men's basketball at the NCAA Division I level has become comparable to that of professional sports during the period between 1960 and 2013. This league, which is comprised of unpaid, amateur athletes enrolled as students at the various member universities, has undergone a number of changes since its formation in 1906. Student activism around global health is occurring with visibility and fervor in the United States collegiate setting. Over the past two years, I have traveled across the US and Vietnam to immerse myself in the life of a nonprofit organization called GlobeMed. A largely student-led organization, GlobeMed partners each chapter with its own unique community health organization. My thesis is an ethnographic study that draws from narratives of young people, analyzes the organizational structure, and provides a broad contextualization of GlobeMed. Areal linguistics is the study of diffused linguistic features across different languages which are geographically contiguous and culturally connected. My research attempts to standardize definitions for the vocabulary surrounding linguistic diffusion which will apply cross-areally. I also examine these definitions within the case study of the Pueblo and Southwest regions of North America. These areas have been culturally linked, but no agreement has been made as to whether or not these make up a linguistic area with sub-areas or are both part of a much larger area including the Great Basin, southern Plains, and southern Californian languages.

This paper examines to what extent banks with outstanding Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) debt are perceived as potential takeover targets. Each bank's price-to-tangible-book value is related to a series of fundamental bank ratios and market index as well as a series of TARP variables that capture if a bank took TARP and for how long. The results show that middle tiered banks (with assets between 500 million and 5 billion) are positively associated with retaining TARP, which may suggest they are perceived as takeover targets. In addition, banks with higher valuations have lower non-performing assets, net charge offs, loan …

In the summer of 2007, stress in money markets created concern among economic policymakers. Fears of counter-party risk and concerns regarding the quality of bank collateral caused tremendous funding pressures for commercial and investment banks, which relied heavily on short-term borrowing. Initial attempts by the Federal Reserve to provide liquidity to banks and to alleviate strains in money markets through conventional monetary policy channels proved ineffective. After a sustained period of financial stress, the Federal Reserve introduced several programs in late 2007 and in early 2008 to address the liquidity needs of market participants. The paper introduces a classification scheme for state approaches to regulation of drug markets. The concept of the 'drug regulation state' is developed to include policies and agencies concerned with all drugs, including legal examples such as tobacco, alcohol, and oxycodone. Private Corrections, Public Implications: The Local Economic Effects Of Private Prisons, Charlotte Landes

The coercive power of the state is unique among its responsibilities. And yet, like many government services, incarceration is becoming more widely privatized. These for-profit prisons market themselves as a solution to state-wide and local economic woes alike. Using standard regression analysis, I test the truth of these claims by exploring the relationship between privatized prisons and local economic health measured by county employment rate and income per capita. I find no significant relationship between the public/private nature of a prison and the employment rate, but there may be evidence of private prisons depressing county income. As we move forward …

A number of US states have passed renewable portfolio standard, a mandate that ensures a certain amount of energy to be generated by renewable sources, to offset carbon emission or create local jobs. While states' renewable portfolio standards have similar features, their designs vary substantially. In this paper, I investigate the design features and renewable energy certificate prices in five northeastern states that are trading in two trading systems to see how renewable portfolio standards are working in those states. This paper presents the findings of an experimental investigation into crowd out phenomenon in an as yet unexplored sector of public goods provision: the local church. I develop an entirely new instrument for experimental investigation into crowd out, using a combination of both survey and experimental methodology. While the survey finds limited evidence for an aggregate crowd out effect due to taxation, the experimental treatments uncover no evidence of crowd out in local churches due to fiscal illusion.

Between 1960 and 1996 Guatemala experienced a horrific civil war and genocide that left the country divided. In the years after the conclusion of this war, Guatemala's history of conflict has remained the subject of intense debate, particularly among those who hold political and social power. This paper looks into the challenges to and opportunities in enabling residential energy efficiency, with a focus on Oberlin, OH. After laying out a basic framework, the paper has three main sections. First, it reviews and discusses financial barriers to residential energy. Next, it discusses social and psychological barriers, and discusses the Energy Advocate program that has successfully addressed these barriers. Finally, it discusses the physical barriers of old housing stock. It recommends developing a home repair cooperative to address the physical barriers to energy efficiency.

Memory consolidation is the process during which short-term memory is stabilized and long-term memory is formed. This study aims at investigating how physical and cognitive activities affect memory consolidation during wakefulness. There were four conditions: sit, sit-puzzle, walk and walk-puzzle and a repeated measure, within subject design was adopted. Participants engage in each condition for ten minutes immediately following a learning session, and this process was repeated for four times.
