Data Envelopment Analysis Of Relative Efficiencies Of Public And Private Institutions Of Higher Learning, Joseph Calhoun, Joshua Hall Jan 2013

Data Envelopment Analysis Of Relative Efficiencies Of Public And Private Institutions Of Higher Learning, Joseph Calhoun, Joshua Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

There has been considerable public debate surrounding the efficiency of higher education in the United States. Using Data Envelopment Analysis, we look at the efficiency of a majority of the institutions of higher learning in the United States. Using two different approaches, we find some evidence that private institutions of higher learning are more efficient than public ones. In particular, masters and bachelors-granting institutions with unrestricted revenue greater than 85% are more efficient than those with less than 85%. Public institutions tend to have more restricted funding, suggesting that their stakeholders constrain them from operating on the frontier.

Interpretation Of The Wisc-Iv Working Memory Index As A Measure Of Attention, Talya J. Colliflower Jan 2013

Interpretation Of The Wisc-Iv Working Memory Index As A Measure Of Attention, Talya J. Colliflower

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The WISC-IV Working Memory Index is often interpreted as a valid measure of attention and concentration. Students who score low on the WMI are frequently viewed as having attention difficulties. If the WMI is accurately interpreted as a measure of attention, then students who score low on this composite should present with attention deficits in the classroom. Data of students who were referred for an evaluation to determine special education eligibility were compared to determine the accuracy of the interpretation of the WMI and its relationship with the Inattention and other scales on the Conners 3rd Edition – Teacher Form. …

[Review Of] Mentoring Faculty Of Color: Essays On Professional Development And Advancement In Colleges And Universities, By Dwayne Mack, Elwood D. Watson, And Michelle Madsen Camacho, Eds., Marie Sarita Gaytán

Ethnic Studies Review

Looking back at my graduate school years, the most vital mentorship I received came in the form of sometimes brutal, but often measured honesty from a small set of trusted advisors and advanced graduate students. Their guidance was critical to my journey because they talked openly about the obstacles they faced in navigating work/life balance, spoke candidly about dealing with unsupportive colleagues, and relayed freely the challenges they encountered in their attempts to gain legitimacy as academics or scholars-in-training. In short, much like the earnest insight shared by the authors of Mentoring Faculty of Color: Essays on Professional Development and …

The Fundi Effect: Activism Through Empowerment, Tony Jamal Lee

Ethnic Studies Review

The participatory democracy strategy of organization used by Ella Baker was greatly productive in grassroots activism, and has the potential to strengthen the political struggles of the present to the height of the movements in times past. Ella Baker was a prominent figure in the black freedom struggle. She was active in fighting for equal rights for Afrikans in America for over five decades. Her approach was characterized by an ability to mobilize and influence youth to action. In this work, there will be an analytical examination of how this methodology is equipped to stand the tests of time through …

Enacting "Smoke, Lilies, And Jade" As Black Gay Print Culture, Shawn Anthony Christian Jan 2013

Enacting "Smoke, Lilies, And Jade" As Black Gay Print Culture, Shawn Anthony Christian

Ethnic Studies Review

This essay offers a comparative analysis of the ways that Isaac Julien's Looking for Langston (1989) and Rodney Evans's Brother to Brother (2005) inscribe Richard Bruce Nugent's landmark short story "Smoke, Lilies, and Jade" (1926). Both films are examples of how "Smoke," which was first published in the short-lived but infamous journal FIRE!!, now functions as much more than an artifact from the Harlem Renaissance's dynamic print culture. As I contend through this analysis, "Smoke" is a central diegetic element in both films. It enables Looking's visual depiction of the sojourn that Nugent's protagonist Alex has with his male lover …

The Muslim Refugee Family: On The Way To Citizenship, Heidi Naylor

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the spring of 2001, just before the world went post-9/11, my husband approached me about hosting an Afghan refugee family of four. I was hesitant. But my reservations-lice, tuberculosis, the loss of solitude-seem petty and insulting now. In the end, they were out-weighed by his enthusiasm.

Status Report On The Sexual And Reproductive Health Of Adolescents Living In Urban Slums In Kenya, Donatien Beguy, Joyce Mumah, Salome Wawire, Kanyiva Muindi, Lindsey Gottschalk, Caroline W. Kabiru Jan 2013

Status Report On The Sexual And Reproductive Health Of Adolescents Living In Urban Slums In Kenya, Donatien Beguy, Joyce Mumah, Salome Wawire, Kanyiva Muindi, Lindsey Gottschalk, Caroline W. Kabiru

Reproductive Health

This report highlights the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges faced by adolescents living in slums in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as the perceptions and strategies that adolescents adopt to deal with each of these challenges. The results point to the fact that there is a range of experiences among adolescents with regard to knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Age, education, and marital status were often strongly associated with certain adolescent sexual and reproductive health experiences, highlighting the fact that targeted programs are needed to reach adolescents with SRH services at different stages of need. Consistent and persistent poverty reduction strategies …

Post-Abortion Care In Pakistan: A National Study, Zeba Sathar, Susheela Singh, Zakir Hussain Shah, Gul Rashida, Iram Kamran, Kanwal Eshai

Reproductive Health

The objectives of this Population Council study were twofold: first to collect information on prevailing practices of abortion and post‐abortion care in Pakistan and, second, to gauge changes in the magnitude and quality of abortion‐related complications and care during the last decade (since the 2002 national study of “Unwanted Pregnancy and Post‐abortion Complications in Pakistan”). The study found that the level of post‐abortion family planning (FP) counseling in both public and private health facilities offering PAC services was inadequate. There has been no improvement over the decade in the level of counseling reported, and, even more disappointingly, only half of …

Affective Forecasting And Well Being, Barry Schwartz, R. Sommers Jan 2013

Affective Forecasting And Well Being, Barry Schwartz, R. Sommers

Psychology Faculty Works

Every decision requires a prediction, both about what will happen and about how the decider will feel about what happens. Thus, decisions require what is known as affective forecasting. This chapter reviews evidence that people systematically mispredict the way experiences will feel. First, predictions about the future are often based on memories of the past, but memories of the past are often inaccurate. Second, people predict that the affective quality of experiences will last, thereby neglecting the widespread phenomenon of adaptation. Third, in anticipating an experience, people focus on aspects of their lives that will be changed by the experience …

Sugar And Space? Not The Case: Effects Of Low Blood Glucose On Slant Estimation Are Mediated By Beliefs, D. M. Shaffer, E. Mcmanama, C. Swank, Frank H. Durgin Jan 2013

Sugar And Space? Not The Case: Effects Of Low Blood Glucose On Slant Estimation Are Mediated By Beliefs, D. M. Shaffer, E. Mcmanama, C. Swank, Frank H. Durgin

Psychology Faculty Works

There is a current debate concerning whether people's physiological or behavioral potential alters their perception of slanted surfaces. One way to directly test this is to physiologically change people's potential by lowering their blood sugar and comparing their estimates of slant to those with normal blood sugar. In the first investigation of this (Schnall, Zadra, & Proffitt, 2010), it was shown that people with low blood sugar gave higher estimates of slanted surfaces than people with normal blood sugar. The question that arises is whether these higher estimates are due to lower blood sugar, per se, or experimental demand created …

Dreamscapes: Topography, Mind, And The Power Of Simulacra In Ancient And Traditional Societies, Paul Devereux Jan 2013

Dreamscapes: Topography, Mind, And The Power Of Simulacra In Ancient And Traditional Societies, Paul Devereux

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Dream content can be influenced by external sounds, smells, touch, objects glimpsed with half-open eyes during REM sleep, and somatic signals. This paper suggests that this individual, neurologically-driven process parallels that experienced collectively by pre-industrial tribal and traditional peoples in which the land itself entered into the mental lives of whole societies, forming mythic geographies—dreamscapes. This dreamtime perception was particularly evident in the use of simulacra, in which the shapes of certain topographical features allowed them to be presented in anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, or iconic guise to both the individual and the culturally-reinforced gaze of society members. This paper further indicates …

Shamanic Cosmology As An Evolutionary Neurocognitive Epistemology, Michael Winkelman Jan 2013

Shamanic Cosmology As An Evolutionary Neurocognitive Epistemology, Michael Winkelman

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The biological foundation for a shamanic epistemology is indicated by the cross-cultural distribution of a shamanic cosmology derived from knowledge obtained during altered consciousness. These special forms of consciousness involve integrative brain conditions that access ancient ways of knowing, expressive systems which have evolutionary roots in the communicative and social processes involved in animal displays or rituals. These were augmented over the course of hominid evolution into expressive and mimetic activities that provided a basis for significant epistemological expansions of consciousness exemplified in shamanic out-of-body (OBE) experiences. These manifestations of consciousness involved new modes of self and processes of knowing, …

Write For Your Life: Developing Digital Literacies And Writing Pedagogy In Teacher Education, Shartriya Collier, Brian Foley, David Moguel, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

The need for the effective development of digital literacies pervades every aspect of instruction in contemporary classrooms. As a result, teacher candidates must be equipped to draw upon a variety of literacies in order to tap into the complex social worlds of their future pupils. The Write for Your Life Project was designed to strengthen teacher candidates’ skills in both traditional and digital writing literacies through the use of social networks, blogging, texting, online modules and other social media. The project, to a large degree, was structured according to Calkins’ (1994) Writing Workshop Approach. This process encourages teacher candidates to …

Stewardship Of The Biosphere In The Urban Era, Michail Fragkias Jan 2013

Stewardship Of The Biosphere In The Urban Era, Michail Fragkias

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We are entering a new urban era in which the ecology of the planet as a whole is increasingly influenced by human activities (Ellis 2011; Steffen et al. 2011a, b; Folke et al. 2011). Cities have become a central nexus of the relationship between people and nature, both as crucial centres of demand of ecosystem services, and as sources of environmental impacts. Approximately 60 % of the urban land present in 2030 is forecast to be built in the period 2000–2030 (Chap. 21). Urbanization therefore presents challenges but also opportunities. In the next two to three decades, we have unprecedented …

The Determinants Of Credit Allocations In A Market-Based Trading System: Evidence From The Reclaim Program, Antonio M. Bento, Emeric Henry, Scott E. Lowe Jan 2013

The Determinants Of Credit Allocations In A Market-Based Trading System: Evidence From The Reclaim Program, Antonio M. Bento, Emeric Henry, Scott E. Lowe

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines the determinants of emission credit allocations under the Regional Clean Air Incentives Market (RECLAIM) - a program aimed at reducing nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulfur oxides (SOX) - in the greater Los Angeles area. Our results suggest that deviations in the allocation of emission credits can be systematically explained by firm-level factors and the location of the facility. Our results also indicate that deviations in the allocation of emission credits may have been made in an attempt to regulate toxics, and that certain industries were protected in the early stages of the program.

A Synthesis Of Global Urbanization Projections, Michail Fragkias, Burak Güneralp, Karen C. Seto, Julie Goodness

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter reviews recent literature on global projections of future urbanization, covering the population, economic and physical extent perspectives. We report on several recent findings based on studies and reports on global patterns of urbanization. Specifically, we review new literature that makes projections about the spatial pattern, rate, and magnitude of urbanization change in the next 30–50 years. While projections should be viewed and utilized with caution, the chapter synthesis reports on several major findings that will have significant socioeconomic and environmental impacts including the following:

  • By 2030, world urban population is expected to increase from the current 3.4 billion …

Lending E-Readers: Legal? Ethical? Practical?, Sue Polanka

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Libraries of all types have taken the plunge of lending ebook readers to their patrons, yet controversy remains. As far back as 2007, the Sparta, N.J., Public Library was one of the first to dip its toes into then unknown waters (http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6533029.html). Many others have followed suit. In fact, Library Journal's 2011 "Ebook Penetration and Use" surveys (http://www.thedigitalshift.com/research/ebook-penetration) found that 12% of academic libraries, 15% of public libraries, and 17% of school libraries are lending e-readers. They lend Kindles, NOOKs, iPads, and Sony Readers of all shapes and sizes. Some are for classroom use, and …

A Pilot Study Assessing Outcomes For The High 8 Socially Uninhibited Subtype After Treatment With Focused Brief Grouptherapy, Kacey D. Greening

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A pilot study was completed to determine the effectiveness of Focused Brief Group Therapy (FBGT; Whittingham, 2008) in a college counseling center. The study focused on individuals with elevated scores on scale 8, also known as the socially uninhibited subtype, of the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems. This scale has been described by researchers as potentially problematic in treatment (Burlingame, 2005) and also appeared in high numbers as referrals at a mid-western college counseling center. Pre-existing data from the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-32; Horowitz et al., 2000) and the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS; Center for Collegiate Mental …

The reach of HIV counseling and testing has grown rapidly since the 2000s, particularly since 2007 when provider-initiated counseling and testing was implemented alongside voluntary counseling and testing and testing for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission. Nevertheless, we still know little about the attendant practices of disclosing HIV-positive status. Persistently high rates of non-disclosure raise difficult ethical, public health and human rights issues. The articles in this special issue show that disclosure practices in Africa not only follow the public health rationality but are shaped by fears of stigma that favor secrecy. They show how practices of disclosure are embedded …

Switching Genders: Identifying The Evaluator In Stereotype Threat For Men And Women In A Math Context, Mirjana A. Antonic, Mary C. Murphy, Katherine T.U. Emerson, Lara D. Mercurio

Modern Psychological Studies

The current study seeks to identify the source of evaluation that causes stereotype threat for men and women in a math context. In a 2 (participant gender: male vs. female) X 3 (gender label: Match, Mismatch, Control) factorial design, male and female participants that identified highly with math were asked to take a math test. Throughout the test, participants' ostensible gender was displayed on the computer screen. The displayed gender was either the correct gender, the opposite gender, or "Alabama." Although our results were unable to determine if stereotype threat is a self- or an outside evaluator-threat, we did observe …
