A Phenomenology Of Sns Sharing, Dylan E. Wittkower
A Phenomenology Of Sns Sharing, Dylan E. Wittkower
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In this contribution to a phenomenology of social network sites (SNS), we see how the share button brings about an alteration in our being-with others. On the side of the sharer, we see an experience of the world in a mode of possible retroactive sociality, creating an enigma in the constitution and attention of the subject of a given experience. On the side of the receiver, we see how being shared with creates sometimes unwelcome retrospective ideation of the sharer’s experience, and requires a choice whether, by liking or commenting, to bring the sharer into retroactive awareness of having been …
The Significance Of Foresight In Vision And Narrative Leadership, Lyna M. Matesi
The Significance Of Foresight In Vision And Narrative Leadership, Lyna M. Matesi
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The purpose of this article is to discuss how foresight fuels vision and is deployed through narrative leadership. The underlying premise is Greenleaf's observation that servant-leaders simultaneously "know the unknowable" and "foresee the unforeseeable" (Greenleaf 2003, 50). In his writing, intellection, imagination, and insight constitute foresight and fuel vision. Similarly, Sashkin (2004) asserted that leader visions are both mentally and behaviorally constructed. I support both Greenleaf's and Sashkin's claims by outlining how mental construction of vision is achieved through foresight and how the behavioral construction of vision is achieved through narrative leadership. I pursue this argument by ( l) summarizing …
A Two-Factor Theory For Concussion Assessment Using Impact: Memory And Speed, Philip Schatz, Arthur C. Maerlender
A Two-Factor Theory For Concussion Assessment Using Impact: Memory And Speed, Philip Schatz, Arthur C. Maerlender
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
We present the initial validation of a two-factor structure of Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) using ImPACT composite scores and document the reliability and validity of this factor structure. Factor analyses were conducted for baseline (N = 21,537) and post-concussion (N = 560) data, yielding “Memory” (Verbal and Visual) and “Speed” (Visual Motor Speed and Reaction Time) Factors; inclusion of Total Symptom Scores resulted in a third discrete factor. Speed and Memory z-scores were calculated, and test–retest reliability (using intra-class correlation coefficients) at 1 month (0.88/0.81), 1 year (0.85/0.75), and 2 years (0.76/0.74) were higher than published data …
Servant-Leadership And Psychological Hardiness, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan
Servant-Leadership And Psychological Hardiness, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The multitude of changes occurring in society increasingly call upon leaders to engage in more participative, servant-oriented approaches to leadership. At the same time, these changes are likely increasing the stress and strain that leaders face on a daily basis. Thus, those who would answer the call to serve and lead face the challenge of withstanding the pressures of the day. This research study explores this challenge by testing the relationship between self-perceived psychological hardiness and servant-leadership within the context of a public institution of higher education. If a strong positive relationship exists between these variables, then this may further …
On Becoming A Servant-Leader: A Theoretical And Philosophical Basis For The Emergence Of Natural Servanthood, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan
On Becoming A Servant-Leader: A Theoretical And Philosophical Basis For The Emergence Of Natural Servanthood, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
It is easier to make a "leader" than a "servant," to indulge hierarchies and control than to embrace service and collaboration. H. Beazley and J. Beggs, "Teaching Servant-Leadership".
Religious Commitment And Servant-Leadership: The Development Of An Exploratory Conceptual Model, Gary E. Roberts, Diane Hess-Hernandez
Religious Commitment And Servant-Leadership: The Development Of An Exploratory Conceptual Model, Gary E. Roberts, Diane Hess-Hernandez
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Irrespective of one's personal religious beliefs, no objective observer can deny that religion exerts a major influence on society and human resources management. The influence of religious beliefs and spirituality on the jobrelated attitudes, behaviors, and performance of employees is an often neglected and underresearched topic across the major organizational sectors (Garcia Zamor 2003; Giacalone and Jurkiewicz 2003; King 2007; Exline and Bright 2011; Byrne, Morton, and Dahling 2011 ). This article strives to develop a conceptual framework for the influence of religious commitment on servant-leader and human resource management work-related outcomes. It will include the main dependent and independent …

Henrik And Daniel Sedin: Nhl Heroes And Servant-Leaders, Carolyn Crippen, David Nagel
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
We all need and seek heroes in our world. A common source for heroes can be found in professional sports. This paper will introduce readers to two elite ice hockey players, Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who play for the Vancouver Canucks Hockey Team in the National Hockey League (NHL). I believe they are servant-leaders and worthy examples for our youth and adults too.
Paradigms For Cybersecurity Education In A Homeland Security Program, Gary C. Kessler, James D. Ramsay
Paradigms For Cybersecurity Education In A Homeland Security Program, Gary C. Kessler, James D. Ramsay
Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach
Cybersecurity threats to the nation are growing in intensity, frequency, and severity and are a very real threat to the security of the country. Academia has responded to a wide variety of homeland security (HS) threats to the nation by creating formal curricula in the field, although these programs almost exclusively focus on physical threats (e.g., terrorist attacks, and natural and man-made disasters), law and policy and transportation . Although cybersecurity programs are commonly available in U.S. colleges and universities, they are invariably offered as a technical course of study nested within engineering (or other STEM) programs. We observe that …

Part 8: Ok, Now What Should We Do? Is It Richard Florida's "Creative Classes" Or Instead "Back To Basics" That Should Guide Our Future Regional Economic Growth?, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Richard Florida’s “creative class” theory of why cities and regions grow is popular, but does not explain the world as well as traditional theories that focus on human capital and technology. This chapter recommends specific policies for our region that are more likely than Florida’s to stimulate economic growth and critiques several hot, current policy issues.
Evaluating The Status Of Cave Wilderness, Patricia Seiser
Evaluating The Status Of Cave Wilderness, Patricia Seiser
National Cave and Karst Management Symposium 2013
In 1964 the United States government passed landmark legislation creating a National Wilderness Preservation System to preserve and protect natural landscapes for primitive use. Despite four attempts to create a Cave Wilderness designation, two by the Cave Research Foundation, one by the National Speleological Society and one by a unit within the National Park Service system, no Wilderness designation has been made to protect and preserve a specific cave, region within a cave or a karst region. The question remains: if and when will the US declare a cave or portion of a cave/cave system as Wilderness? Two federal acts …

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
A February 2012 survey of almost 5,000 farmers across a region of the U.S. that produces more than half of the nation’s corn and soybean revealed that 66% of farmers believed climate change is occurring (8% mostly anthropogenic, 33% equally human and natural, 25% mostly natural), while 31% were uncertain and 3.5% did not believe that climate change is occurring. Results of initial analyses indicate that farmers’ beliefs about climate change and its causes vary considerably, and the relationships between those beliefs, concern about the potential impacts of climate change, and attitudes toward adaptive and mitigative action differ in systematic …

All Punishment Is Local: The Effects Of Jurisdictional Context On Sentence Length, Elsa Y. Chen
Political Science
Objectives
This article investigates the extent to which contextual and individual factors influence the length of prison sentences in California.
Methods
The analysis applies a hierarchical linear model to individual and county-level data.
Results
Some characteristics of the racial, organizational, and public safety environments are found to influence the length of prison terms.
Conclusions
The findings support the organizational maintenance perspective and the idea of minority incarceration as a response to a perceived crime threat. Political environment is not found to have a significant effect on sentence lengths, and the findings do not support the racial threat hypothesis. The effects …

This article explores how the Methodist Church tended to the spiritual needs of the soldiers in the Confederate Army. The church supplied 448 chaplains to the Army, but there were never enough to meet the needs of the troops. The church worked to mitigate this problem by establishing the Soldiers' Tract Association in 1862 and by sometimes working with churches of other denominations to support the soldiers.
Vascular Depression: An Early Indicator Of Decline, Daniel Lee Paulson
Vascular Depression: An Early Indicator Of Decline, Daniel Lee Paulson
Wayne State University Dissertations
Women over the age of 80 represent a rapidly growing demographic group. While older women live longer than men, they do so with more years of disability and frailty. The emergence of geriatric disorders such as vascular disease, depression, frailty and cognitive decline in the aging US population place additional strain and expense on the already over-burdened public health care system. Meanwhile, integrated models of care are associated with preserved functional independence, reduced medical costs, and greater satisfaction for both health care providers and patients. Implementation of integrated care demands process-models of disease that contextualize symptoms within broader patterns of …

Background: Social interaction can serve as a natural reward that attenuates drug reward in rats; however, it is unknown if age or housing conditions alter the choice between social interaction and drug.
Methods: Individually- and pair-housed adolescent and adult male rats were tested using conditioned place preference (CPP) in separate experiments in which: (1) social interaction was conditioned against no social interaction; (2) amphetamine (AMPH; 1 mg/kg, s.c.) was conditioned against saline; or (3) social interaction was conditioned against AMPH.
Results: Social interaction CPP was obtained only in individually-housed adolescents, whereas AMPH CPP was obtained in both individually-housed adolescents and …
Antecedents To Mobbing, Anita Lois Lane
Antecedents To Mobbing, Anita Lois Lane
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The research examines possible antecedents to mobbing behavior. Mobbing typically occurs following a bullying incident. Dyadic Power Theory (Dunbar, 2004) is applied to the behaviors associated with this phenomenon. Indirect Interpersonal Aggression can be perceived as a communicative strategy to demonstrate control attempts. Those who lack in self-assurance may be more apt to join in with the mob and cultivate mobbing episodes in the adult world. Emerging adults are entering vocational spheres in large numbers. Becoming aware of unethical communicative behaviors that lead to severe workplace and individual consequences is the focus of this study.

This project examined the use of Ronald Reagan’s rhetoric, specifically the “Star Wars,” “Zero Option” and “Evil Empire” speeches. It answers the question: Why do we know SDI as Star Wars? It also The rationale for the study came from myriad sources, including the historical and political undertones of the Star Wars films and rhetorical criticism of other Reagan speeches. G. Thomas Goodnight’s analysis linked all three speeches together as a reformulation of wartime rhetoric, so that was the rationale for analyzing three speeches. After performing a rhetorical criticism using Burkean identification as the lens, there are several results: Reagan …

Focusing on prime-time dramatic television as the most prevalent source of fictional images of violence, crime, and incarceration, in this chapter I address the distorted narratives and images that saturate popular television dramas. I also draw upon interviews I conducted with ex-prisoners to show how media representations of imprisonment, though inaccurate and misleading, shape the perceptions even of those who have themselves been incarcerated.
