Tracking Onslow: a community in transition

In February the second group of ECU students involved in the Tracking Onslow Project spent a week in town, talking to people and gathering stories, footage and photos for this magazine and for the next update of www.TrackingOnslow.net.

Our journalism is independent. It is not controlled by the companies operating in town or by federal, state or local governments. Our aim is to tell your stories and create a record of the impact of the new resources projects on Onslow.

We hope this process is not only helpful to you, by keeping you informed about what is happening and how …

This convergent mixed methods study examined 35 healthy, independent living individuals' (over 85 years) perceptions of their relationship with their primary health provider (PHP) and health practices. The relationship between PHP relationship perceptions and locus of control (LOC), resilience, and self-efficacy was explored through surveys and interviews. The majority indicated they visited their PHP just for preventative care; the number of PHP visits per year was significantly lower than reported for individuals over 85 by the CDC, possible reasons for this finding are provided. A positive relationship between LOC, resiliency, and self-efficacy for the oldest-old was found. Few participants indicated …

Background Tailored, web-assisted interventions can reach many smokers. Content from other smokers (peers) through crowdsourcing could enhance relevance.

Purpose To evaluate whether peers can generate tailored messages encouraging other smokers to use a web-assisted tobacco intervention (Decide2Quit.org).

Methods Phase 1: In 2009, smokers wrote messages in response to scenarios for peer advice. These smoker-to-smoker (S2S) messages were coded to identify themes. Phase 2: resulting S2S messages, and comparison expert messages, were then e-mailed to newly registered smokers. In 2012, subsequent Decide2Quit.org visits following S2S or expert-written e-mails were compared.

Stop Terry : Reasonable Suspicion, Race, And A Proposal To Limit Terry Stops, Renée M. Hutchins

Faculty Scholarship

The Terry doctrine, which grants a police officer the authority to stop and frisk based on his or her reasonable suspicion rather than probable cause, was created by the Supreme Court at a time when the nation con- fronted a particular moment of violent racial strife. Since Terry was decided, the Supreme Court has continued to expand the reach of the doctrine—which opened the door for potential abuse. Existing data is increasingly proving that the loosening of constitutional standards is causing substantial harms to people of color nationwide. This article joins the existing scholarly discussion surrounding this decision to suggest …

Bridging The Business Cultures Of The East And West, Singapore Management University Jan 2013

Bridging The Business Cultures Of The East And West, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

As companies in the West look to the East for business opportunities and those in the East looking westwards to expand themselves, it is no longer enough for business executives to be bilingual. Those who want to be in hot demand will have to be "bi-cultural" and understand the differences between Western and Eastern business cultures.

Living In Digital Asia: Better, Faster, Stronger?, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

The rate at which Asia is embracing technology is simply "amazing", according to Olivier Muehlstein, principal consultant at the Boston Consulting Group. “It's astounding how digitally engaged and active people are in this part of the world. Southeast Asia is extremely connected; it's an anomaly,” he said, and cautioned that an important consequence from all of these changes, is that privacy does not exist anymore.

Mary Yeo, vice president of supply chain operations at UPS South District, said at a talk presented at Singapore Management University (SMU): “This is a reminder to all of us working at UPS that we cannot overlook any important matters happening in our environment by simply forgetting the good culture at UPS.”

Research Skills Boot Camp: Preparing Law Students For Internships, Charlotte Gill, Priyanka Sharma, Yuyun W. Ishak

Research Collection Library

Legal Internship is an integral part of legal education and is the first brush that a law student has with the legal profession outside the comfortable environs of law school. Since the inception of the law school at Singapore Management University (SMU) in 2007, law students are required to complete a 10 week compulsory internship as an essential part of their legal training pedagogy. The internship is intended to acquaint students with the practical workings of the legal system and the realities of law practice in the private and public sectors. The consistent message that we have received from practitioners …

A Meta-Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Stem-Programs In The United States, Dayoung An Jan 2013

A Meta-Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Stem-Programs In The United States, Dayoung An

ETD Archive

The federal government has been spending a large amount of funds on STEM programs. It is important to examine the effectiveness of such spending. Much research has been conducted in the past 30 years for this particular purpose however, the results of such evaluations have not painted a clear picture of the effectiveness of STEM programs. The goal of this meta-analysis is to investigate whether STEM programs are successful in the outcomes they claim to achieve. Such a meta-analysis must integrate all of the empirical studies which reported their effort in evaluating the effectiveness of STEM programs, based on measures …

The Effects Of Video Game Difficulty Selection On Flow Experience, Michael W. W. Buncher Jan 2013

The Effects Of Video Game Difficulty Selection On Flow Experience, Michael W. W. Buncher

ETD Archive

This study investigates selective exposure and video gameplay by borrowing methods employed in previous selective exposure studies on television and the Internet. Also studied was the impact of mood-managing behaviors on the experience of flow, both of which are concerned with affective homeostasis. It was predicted that participants manipulated to experience stress would select easier difficulty levels and play at a slower pace than those who experienced boredom. Means of manipulated groups were consistently in the predicted positions, but there was limited support for hypotheses derived from selective exposure. A negative relationship between self reported boredom and difficulty selection was …

Reviewing The Critics: Examining Popular Video Game Reviews Through A Comparative Content Analysis, Ben Gifford Jan 2013

Reviewing The Critics: Examining Popular Video Game Reviews Through A Comparative Content Analysis, Ben Gifford

ETD Archive

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current critical climate in popular online video game reviews (i.e., video game criticism written for a general audience). So far, most of the research published in this area focuses on how the reviews reflect the games themselves, rather than strictly examining the content of the reviews in this growing body of literature. This study uses computer-aided text analysis (CATA) supplemented with human coding to identify typological differences between film and video game reviews, as well as differences in theory usage and critical thought and style. Video game reviews are more concerned …

Alcoholics In Recovery: Factors Informing The Decision To Self-Disclose Alcoholism In The Workplace, Teresa Coyne Andreani

ETD Archive

While the impact of employee substance abuse on the workplace is well documented, research studies concerning the experience of recovered alcoholics in the workplace are scarce. Recovered alcoholics who must negotiate a sober identity in the workplace where alcohol may be part of the social culture may feel disconnected from coworkers or may experience anxiety trying to conceal their alcoholism. A survey of recovered alcoholic men and women was used to investigate whether or not recovered alcoholics disclose their alcoholism in the workplace, to whom the information is disclosed, the impact of making such a disclosure, and the factors that …

Cognitive Dissonance, Crime And Commitment To Urban Life: Why Individuals With Means Choose To Live And Remain In Largely Low Income Neighborhoods, Nelson S. Beckford

ETD Archive

The study examined factors influencing an individual's decision to move to and later commitment to remain in Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway, two low income neighborhoods in Cleveland, Ohio. Based on cognitive dissonance theory, it was predicted that paradoxically, people who were victims of crime would demonstrate greater commitment to their neighborhood than would those not victimized. Unexpectedly, I found that crime did not increase or decrease commitment. The study found that neighborhood amenities and seeing improvements in basic services were key to neighborhood commitment. This implies that small investments and specific interventions can help revitalize low income inner city …

Treatment Outcomes Of An Interdisciplinary Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program In Smokes And Nonsmokers, Leighann E. Scheidler Jan 2013

Treatment Outcomes Of An Interdisciplinary Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program In Smokes And Nonsmokers, Leighann E. Scheidler

ETD Archive

Previous research suggests there is a relationship between pain and smoking, but there is limited research on the treatment outcomes of people with chronic pain who smoke. This is particularly evident in the context of interdisciplinary chronic pain treatment programs because the only such study (Hooten et al., 2009) has not been replicated. Therefore, the current study examined the immediate treatment outcomes in patients who have been through an interdisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation program. The treatment outcomes that were examined were depression, anxiety, pain intensity, and pain disability. Depression scores were higher both at admission and discharge for smokers when …
