This study compared the efficacy of a manualized group treatment protocol on God image and attachment to God to a manualized Christian Bible study and a waiting list control group in a sample of undergraduate college students attending a Christian college. Thirty students were randomly assigned to one of the treatment conditions and assessed with measures of God attachment, God image, religious coping, and general spiritual outcomes. It was hypothesized that significant God image and attachment change would occur among the God image treatment group participants only. In addition, it was hypothesized that significant religious coping and spiritual outcome change …

Societal Power Shifts And Changing Social Identities In South Africa: Workplace Implications, Lize A. E. Booysen
Societal Power Shifts And Changing Social Identities In South Africa: Workplace Implications, Lize A. E. Booysen
Faculty Articles
The enormous social, economic and political transformation South Africans have experienced especially over the past 12 years, since the systematic dismantling of apartheid in the era of social and economic reconstruction, has brought about numerous societal and social identity changes. Due to these changes in social identity, societal norms and power shifts, major changes are occurring in the workplace, and societal level identity crises and conflicts are increasingly spilling over into the workplace. This article unpacks these social identity changes and power shifts on the political, social, economic and management levels, by employing social identity theory, self-categorisation theory and embedded …

Social Welfare Faculty Scholarship
Attention to disease and risk factor management is increasingly a feature of people with intellectual disability (ID) as an augmented life expectancy also exposes a growing number of age-related diseases. An additional concern is little attention to date to physical activity, nutrition, access to social support and other personal health choices and to environmental issues such as the impact of access to social support and the implications of individual’s living arrangements. Method: Using a sample of 753 persons with ID from the intellectual disability supplement to the Irish longitudinal study on ageing (IDS-TILDA), forty three variables were grouped into environmental, …
Prevalence Of Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) Among Child Service Providers, Nina Esaki, Heather Larkin Holloway
Prevalence Of Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) Among Child Service Providers, Nina Esaki, Heather Larkin Holloway
Social Welfare Faculty Scholarship
Despite increasing evidence in the public health field about the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the general population, little is known about the prevalence of ACEs among social service providers. Trauma backgrounds may influence both worker susceptibility to vicarious traumatization as well as clinical decision making. Similarly, individuals with trauma backgrounds are vulnerable to re-enactment of their history. With pressure on social service agencies to demonstrate successful client outcomes, it is critical that agencies explore factors that influence high-quality care. This exploratory study is the first investigation of ACE prevalence among workers in an agency that provides residential …
Infrastructure Planning Of The Western North American Electricity System With High Fractions Of Wind And Solar Power, James Henry Nelson
Infrastructure Planning Of The Western North American Electricity System With High Fractions Of Wind And Solar Power, James Henry Nelson
Link Foundation Energy Fellowship Reports
The electricity system is of fundamental importance to the decarbonization of the entire energy system, as fuel switching away from oil and natural gas and towards electricity is a key decarbonization statregy. The scenarios presented here incorporate hourly electricity demand profiles resulting from the electrification of heating and vehicles, as well as from substantial energy efficiency. Even with agressive efficiency measures, WECC-wide electricity demand is likely to increase by at least 75% between present-day and 2050 due to population growth and additional demand from electric vehicles and electric heating. The results presented here should be interpreted in the context of …

The Beast Had To Marry Balinda: Using Story Examples To Explore Socializing Concepts In Ugandan Caregivers’ Oral Stories, Valeda Dent, Geoff Goodman
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
Within the context of storytelling as oral tradition, this paper uses a grounded theory approach to explore a single research question about the socializing concepts found in examples of stories told to young children by their mothers and grandmothers in a rural Ugandan village. These story examples were gathered during the implementation of a socio-educational intervention project. The aims of this paper are to provide a descriptive analysis of the emergent themes and constructs in these story examples against the backdrop of a relevant theoretical framework and life in this rural Ugandan village.

Open Source Assessment Of Academic Library Patron Satisfaction, Katelyn Angell
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
Purpose – While academic libraries have often purchased proprietary software to assess patron satisfaction, the open source movement has generated high-quality software available free of charge. These tools are useful alternatives in an era marked by tremendous budget cuts familiar to many academic libraries. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the ability of open source software to effectively and affordably measure the quality of service at academic libraries.
Design/methodology/approach – The author’s experience with using the open source tool LimeSurvey to administer a library survey over a three-year period serves as a case study for other institutions. A …

Collaborating For Academic Success: A Tri-Institutional Information Literacy Program For High School Students, Eamon Tewell, Katelyn Angell
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
This article describes a nearly decade-long partnership between three institutions representing school, public, and academic settings in Westchester County, New York. The program, designed to improve the academic performance of local high school students, is unique due to the extensive contact students have with academic librarians during the school year, including two day-long orientations and individual consultation sessions. Using experiences as partners in this collaborative effort, interviews with six teachers and librarians, and the existing literature, this article identifies best practices and key factors for academic libraries that are considering or currently providing instructional and outreach activities to high schools.

Associations of pleasure and fun with junk foods have the potential to create considerable challenges for efforts to improve diets. The aim of this research was to determine whether activating health goals had the potential to exploit mixed motivations (i.e., health and pleasure) that people have related to food, and subsequently strip junk foods of the expected pleasure derived from them. In study 1, 98 participants evaluated a soft drink brand after being primed (not primed) for health. In study 2, 93 participants evaluated a presweetened breakfast cereal brand after being primed (not primed) for health. In both studies, participants …

Public-Private Regime Interactions In Global Food Safety Governance, Ching-Fu Lin
Public-Private Regime Interactions In Global Food Safety Governance, Ching-Fu Lin
Transnational Business Governance Interactions Working Papers
In response to an apparent decline in global food safety, numerous public and private regulatory initiatives have emerged to restore public confidence. This trend has been particularly marked by the growing influence of private regulators such as multinational food companies, supermarket chains and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), who employ private standards, certification protocols, third-party auditing, and transnational contracting practices. This paper explores how the structure and processes of private food safety governance interact with traditional public governance regimes, focusing on Global Good Agricultural Practices (GlobalGAP) as a primary example of the former. Due to the inefficiency and ineffectiveness of public regulation …
Public Procurement And Private Certification: The Case Of The Uk Tpp, Alex Latu
Public Procurement And Private Certification: The Case Of The Uk Tpp, Alex Latu
Transnational Business Governance Interactions Working Papers
Forestry certification schemes have been considered the paradigmatic instance of a new form of private governance that may challenge state-centered authority and public policy-making. Although governments and intergovernmental organizations are certainly not the schemes' "main architects", they are more involved in the overall effects of forestry certification than is often emphasized, notably through procurement policies. This paper examines a particularly interaction of private and public governance organizations, in the realm of forestry certification, among the UK government's Timber Procurement Policy (TPP), a governmental demand-side policy tool, and two major certification schemes — the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Program …

Challenges To Recruit And Retain American Indian/Alaskan Native Students In Social Work Programs: The Impact On The Child Welfare Workforce, Suzanne L. Cross, Angelique Day, Lucas J. Gogliotti, Justin J. Pung
Social Work Faculty Publications
There is a shortage of professionally trained American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) social workers available to provide services including child welfare services to tribal communities. This study used a mixed-model survey design to examine the perceptions of 47 AI/AN BSW and MSW students enrolled in social work programs across the United States to determine the challenges associated with recruitment and retention. The findings are supported in the literature. Findings indicate that social work academic programs have not made substantial gains in the recruitment and retention of AI/AN students over several decades. Students identified the following seven major barriers to successful recruitment …
Librarian Mentoring Of An Undergraduate Research Project, Pamela Hayes-Bohanan
Librarian Mentoring Of An Undergraduate Research Project, Pamela Hayes-Bohanan
Maxwell Library Faculty Publications
Bridgewater State University has a dynamic, highly visible, and increasingly successful Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) that supports students and their faculty mentors with developing research opportunities. Students working on undergraduate research projects have sought the help of librarians, but the librarians had never been directly involved as mentors. A librarian mentor and student library worker collaborated on a project to develop an online library guide, which is used by faculty and student researchers for discovering social justice resources, and found new paths to teaching and learning information literacy skills.
Halq'eméylem Language Revitalization: Tracing Ideologies In Hybridity, Sonya Rao
Halq'eméylem Language Revitalization: Tracing Ideologies In Hybridity, Sonya Rao
Anthropology Department Honors Papers
Recently, indigenous language revitalization has gained attention from Western media and charitable organizations, a process that has depoliticized the history of indigenous languages. One result of this is the naturalization of the ideological projects that put Native languages at risk, as well as the practices that hinder their revival. I focus on how the scientific and intellectual project of linguistics can dispossess elements of Native languages from its speakers, using it as capital for its own objectives. I show that the history of speech communities shapes the language ideologies that inform choices in the revitalization process, the restraints under which …
Price Barriers In The Stock Market And Their Effect On The Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model, Nathan A. Blyler
Price Barriers In The Stock Market And Their Effect On The Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model, Nathan A. Blyler
Gettysburg Economic Review
The predicted price of an American option by the Black-Scholes (B-S) Option Pricing Model is known to differ from the market price of that option systematically with respect to time to expiration, distance in- or out-of-the-money, and liquidity of the option. We examine the possibility of price barriers in the stock market causing further systemic pricing differences between the market price and B-S predicted price. These differences occur when an option’s strike price is near a price barrier and differ in effect and significance depending on the position of the barrier relative to the underlying stocks’ price. We find round …
