Welfare Issues With Gestation Crates For Pregnant Sows Feb 2013

Welfare Issues With Gestation Crates For Pregnant Sows

Agribusiness Reports

Throughout nearly the entirety of their 112-115 day pregnancies, most breeding sows in the United States are confined in gestation crates (also known as sow stalls)—individual metal enclosures so restrictive that the pigs cannot turn around. Crated sows suffer a number of significant welfare problems, including elevated risk of urinary tract infections, weakened bones, overgrown hooves, lameness, behavioral restriction, and stereotypies. Due to concerns for the welfare of intensively confined sows, legislative, industry, and corporate policies are increasingly phasing out the use of gestation crates.

Too Much Puff, Not Enough Push? Surf Lifeguard Simulated Cpr Performance, Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber Feb 2013

Too Much Puff, Not Enough Push? Surf Lifeguard Simulated Cpr Performance, Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this paper is to report on the technical competency of volunteer surf lifeguards to perform CPR on a manikin in light of their lifeguard experience, age, and gender. The CPR skills of surf lifeguards on patrol at the beginning of the 2010-11 summer season were tested on manikins by observation of CPR procedures and electronic recording of compression and ventilation skills. Almost all lifeguards (n=252) made the appropriate initial checks for responsiveness (98%). Compression skills were generally performed accurately with few technical errors (such as incomplete release). Most lifeguards (87%) over-ventilated the lungs (> 600ml) on each …

Junction City School District Population And Enrollment Forecasts, 2013-14 To 2022-23, Portland State University. Population Research Center, Charles Rynerson, Bimal Rajbhandary, Ryan Dann

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

This report details a range of three scenarios of district‐wide Enrollment Forecasts by grade level for the 10 year period between 2013‐14 and 2022‐23. Each Enrollment Forecast scenario is related to population forecasts that incorporate different assumptions about growth within the District, with the primary differences being the contribution of net migration to the District’s population and age distribution. The forecasts rely on enrollment trends observed through Fall 2012, local area population, housing, and economic trends, and forecasts of population and housing from other studies for Lane County and the City of Junction City.

Learning In The Geoscience Classroom: Q-Methodology, Learning Styles, And Individual Preferences, R. Trevor Hall, Ryan R. Jensen, Daniel D. Mclean

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the challenges of traditional student learning, from an instructor's perspective, involves achieving an understanding of how students learn. Q-method is an effective approach to improve understanding of human subjectivity, and, as this research suggests, it is an appropriate tool to assist educators to better understand how students learn. In particular, Q-methodology provides the educator with a robust tool to assess student learning styles. This paper adapted an existing learning style instrument to a Q-method analysis in an introductory geographic information system class. The analysis resulted in three learning groups: lone pragmatist, explorer, and synergistic. These three learning groups …

The Impact Of State Lotteries And Casinos On State, Kent Grote, Victor Matheson Feb 2013

The Impact Of State Lotteries And Casinos On State, Kent Grote, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

Over the past half century, there has been an increasing prevalence of legalized gambling in the US. At the same time there is a general recognition, empirically supported in the economics literature, that spending on lottery and gaming products tends to be regressive in nature. In addition, gambling addiction is a widely acknowledged social problem. This raises the question of whether the increased presence of casinos and state lotteries results in relatively more bankruptcy filings in the states that offer them. This paper adds to the existing literature by comparing the relative impact of the presence of lotteries to that …

Student Uncertainty And Major Choice, Joshua Congdon-Hohman, Anil Nathan, Justin Svec Feb 2013

Student Uncertainty And Major Choice, Joshua Congdon-Hohman, Anil Nathan, Justin Svec

Economics Department Working Papers

This paper examines how model uncertainty affects students' choice of major. To account for this uncertainty, the students apply a max-min operator to their optimization problem. We show analytically that greater uncertainty in a particular major causes the student to be less likely to choose that major and that greater uncertainty across all majors causes fewer students to major in science, technology, engineering, and math. To test the model's assumptions and predictions, we have conducted a novel survey of college freshmen. The results from this survey are consistent with assumptions and implications of the theoretical model.

Ratio Of Income To Poverty Level For Children Under 18 Years As A Percentage Of The Population For Whom Poverty Is Determined For Nebraska Legislative Districts From The American Community Survey: February 2013, Jerry Deichert

Past Publications

The following tables and graphs look at the number and percentage of children by comparing their families’ incomes to the poverty level. The data are from a U.S. Census Bureau program called the American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS is an ongoing, nation-wide survey conducted every month. Each year approximately 1 in 40 persons are sampled. During the past 5 years in Nebraska, there has been an average of about 40,000 persons interviewed per year.

Pursuing Freedom: Simone De Beauvoir And Hannah Arendt, Rita A. Gardiner Feb 2013

Pursuing Freedom: Simone De Beauvoir And Hannah Arendt, Rita A. Gardiner

Women's Studies and Feminist Research Publications

How do we judge what is right while, at the same time, respect the freedom of others? In considering this question, I bring Simone de Beauvoir and Hannah Arendt into dialogue to better understand how the pursuit of freedom necessitates a willingness to judge others. In my discussion, I explore how these writers treat the themes of ambiguity, oppression, and revolution. By comparing how they relates these themes to freedom, we see how liberty is interconnected with personal, accountability and a willingness to question our beliefs

Education Publications

This research study was commissioned by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) in India to provide a broad overview of key issues associated with how the role of the private sector in education has evolved over the last ten years of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the Government of India’s flagship programme for universal elementary education. The terms of reference set the focus of this study on broadly covering public-private partnerships (PPPs) and the emergence of low-fee private schooling. Additionally, the end of the first decade of SSA dovetails with the implementation of the RTE Act, bringing important changes to …

Proximal Sensing As A Means Of Characterizing Phragmites Australis, Travis Yeik Feb 2013

Proximal Sensing As A Means Of Characterizing Phragmites Australis, Travis Yeik

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Phragmites australis is an invasive wetland weed found throughout much of the United States. Documenting and mapping the growth and spread of this emergent macrophyte can be an important step in developing and implementing successful management strategies. Characterizing the phenology of a vegetation species with a sensor capable of hyperspectral resolution, positioned at close proximity to the canopy of interest, is often a first step necessary for understanding the basic species-specific reflectance patterns, and for quantifying the manner in which light interacts with the plants comprising particular communities. Spectral data over a P. australis canopy were collected during 22 …

Mission Accomplished: A Reply To Reuveny And Keshk, Cullen F. Goenner Feb 2013

Mission Accomplished: A Reply To Reuveny And Keshk, Cullen F. Goenner

Economics & Finance Faculty Publications

Reuveny and Keshk (“Reconsidering trade and conflict simultaneity: The risk of emphasizing technique over substance,” this issue, 2013) argue that the econometric techniques used by Goenner (Conflict Management and Peace Science 28(5): 459–477, 2011) to test and control for endogeneity when estimating the relationship between trade and conflict lack substance. Both sets of authors propose the use of instrumental variable methods, which are known by econometricians to be the natural remedy for estimation with potentially endogenous regressors. Where Goenner (2011) and Reuveny and Keshk (2013) agree is that theory should guide variable selection and the model’s specification. Yet they …

The article discusses how subscription services for electronic publications can add value to academic libraries. The author looks at the subscription agent for academic periodicals called JSTOR and its platform offered by the ITHAKA subscription service. Additional topics include the June 2011 decision by the American Institute of Physics to discontinue its use of its Scitation electronic publication platform in 2012, as well as the electronic publication platform of the publisher Taylor and Francis. Also discussed are academic libraries' strategies for data management in their work with intermediary subscription providers and intermediary vendors.

Pay And Relative Income Within Couples, Kevin F. Hallock Feb 2013

Pay And Relative Income Within Couples, Kevin F. Hallock

Economics Faculty Publications

In "U.S. Labor Market Challenges Over the Longer Term," labor economist David Autor shows that the fraction of young adults who are currently married plummeted, dropping by 30% to 70% depending on gender, education and race/ethnicity (paper prepared for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, 2010). At the same time, women's labor earnings have steadily increased. An interesting and provocative new working paper, "Gender Identity and Relative Income Within Households", by Marianne Bertrand, Emir Kamenica and Jessica Pan (working paper, November 2012), tries to determine how these two trends are related. One of the things Bertrand, Kamenica and Pan focus …

Relative Speed Fluctuations In Discus Throwing, Andreas Maheras

Track and Field Faculty Publications

In the course of a discus throw, the center of mass of the thrower + discus system translated forward across the circle. This way the speed of the center of mass contributes to the speed of the discus. An analogy that can be used to explain how the speed of the center of mass contributes to the speed of the discus is as follows.

Disclosing Extra-Dyadic Involvement (Edi): Understanding Attitudes, Subjective Norms, And Perceived Behavioral Control, Ryan B. Seedall, Austin Houghtaling, Erica J. Wilkins

Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications

Extra-dyadic involvement (EDI) is a complex issue that affects many individuals, couples, and families. One important, relatively unexplored issue concerns the disclosure of EDI. Despite some scholarly discourse on whether disclosure should be facilitated in a therapeutic context (e.g., Butler et al. in J Marital Fam Ther 35:125–143, 2009; Butler et al. in Am J Fam Ther 36:265–283, 2008), empirical research has not studied the intrapersonal or interpersonal processes related to disclosure. In this study, we explored potential factors involved in the decision to disclose EDI by looking at the relationships among attitudes towards EDI (in terms of perceived justifications …

County-Specific Net Migration By Five-Year Age Groups, Hispanic Origin, Race And Sex 2000-2010, Richelle Winkler, Kenneth M. Johnson, Cheng Cheng, Paul R. Voss, Katherine J. Curtis

Sociology

This report documents the methodology used to prepare county-level, net migration estimates by five-year age cohorts and sex, and by race and Hispanic origin, for the intercensal period from 2000 to 2010. The estimates were prepared using a vital statistics version of the forward cohort residual method (Siegel and Hamilton 1952) following the techniques used to prepare the 1990 to 2000 net migration estimates (Voss, McNiven, Johnson, Hammer, and Fuguitt 2004) as described in detail below. These numbers (and the net migration rates derivable from them) extend the set of decennial estimates of net migration that have been produced following …

Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies Faculty Publications

Purpose: To offer additional tools for the assessment of effectiveness and usability in technology-mediated communication based in established heuristics.

Method: An interdisciplinary group of researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute selected five disparate examples of technology-mediated communication, formally evaluated each using contemporary heuristics, and then engaged in an iterative design process to arrive at an expanded toolkit for in depth analyses.

Results: A set of heuristics and operationalized metrics for the deeper analysis of a broader scope of contemporary technology-mediated communication.

Conclusions: The continual evolution of communication, including the emergence of new, interactive media, provides a challenging opportunity to identify effective …
