Engaging Indigenous Content Within Teaching Of Qualitative Research In Psychology, Andrew Guilfoyle Feb 2013

Engaging Indigenous Content Within Teaching Of Qualitative Research In Psychology, Andrew Guilfoyle

eCULTURE

"Australian universities recognise cultural competency as an essential attribute for graduates. Within this context, The Australian Psychology Accreditation Committee (APAC) has enforced requirements for students within psychology programmes to have access to Indigenous content. Though Indigenous participation rates are low, the inclusion of Indigenous content or what is often labeled ‘Indigenous psychology’ acts at least as a symbolic gesture and important step forward in reconciling the massively disadvantaged position of Indigenous Australians. However there is little to date in the way of guides to help develop appropriate teaching methods to include such content more substantially in programmes. This paper reflects …

Outcomes Versus Incomes: Teaching Students What They Need To Get A Job, Joanna Mcmanus, Ruth Callaghan Feb 2013

Outcomes Versus Incomes: Teaching Students What They Need To Get A Job, Joanna Mcmanus, Ruth Callaghan

eCULTURE

It’s an age-old question for university educators: is it our role to provide students with specific skills as well as education? Should learning outcomes be more attuned to what employers want? And which employers? As print and broadcast journalism practitioners, as well as educators, we are involved in research to answer some of these questions. As part of this, we questioned major WA news employers about what they wanted from journalism and broadcasting graduates, both in skills and personal attributes, and what they believed was missing from university journalism courses. We found strong agreement about the importance of ‘traditional’ journalism …

A New Initiative: Student Journalists Learn About Aboriginal Communities And Culture In Western Australia, Trevor Cullen Feb 2013

A New Initiative: Student Journalists Learn About Aboriginal Communities And Culture In Western Australia, Trevor Cullen

eCULTURE

This paper reports on a new initiative between the Combined Universities Centre for Rural Health (CUCRH) and the journalism program at Edith Cowan University (ECU). The main aim is to help journalism students achieve a better understanding of Aboriginal communities and culture in Western Australia, and that this new knowledge and experience will inform student news stories and feature articles on Aboriginal issues. Currently, non-Aboriginal journalists seldom get to meet and talk with Aboriginal people about their life and beliefs, and this often results in narrow and misinformed reporting. So in July 2008, eight final-year ECU journalism students were offered …

Teacher As 'Learner': A Case Study Of Teaching International Economics And Finance, Margaret Giles Feb 2013

Teacher As 'Learner': A Case Study Of Teaching International Economics And Finance, Margaret Giles

eCULTURE

How lucky are we to be teaching economics at this time? Discussions enrich our honours and postgraduate teaching programmes which have always been delivered beyond the textbook. But what about our undergraduate programmes in economics? Can we break away from the prescribed text and engage more fully with contemporary debate? Can our undergraduates also be encouraged to think like economists? In 2009 we have an ideal opportunity to eschew the standard textbook based approach to undergraduate economics teaching. This paper highlights a case study in which a third year unit in international economics and finance fed into School, Faculty and …

How To Look Like A Lesbian Without Even Trying, Laura J. Koenig Feb 2013

How To Look Like A Lesbian Without Even Trying, Laura J. Koenig

SURGE

“Ugh. I hate those pictures. I look like such a lesbian in them,” my cousin explained to me while her family and I sat around their kitchen table. After she said this, her younger brother laughed into his chicken noodle soup and she hit him over the head. “Shut up. I’m telling you. They’re so bad,” she said. As the conversation went on, I learn that she was referring to pictures that had been taken at one of her lacrosse practices. The important part is that she was displeased with the photos. And it’s certainly not because someone had caught …

Link Levy To Services- Not Urban Middle Class Assets, Tom Dunne

Articles

Paying any tax is an unwelcome burden, but in Ireland many have a particular aversion to taxes on their homes. We are not alone in this. Elsewhere, taxes on homes are also unpopular; witness the People's Initiative to Limit Property Taxation which forced the California state government to cut property taxes. Nevertheless, residential property taxes remain an almost universal feature of developed countries because of compelling economic arguments for them. Also, local property taxes are regarded as the best means of funding local government.

Rarely, it seems to me, is there such a distance between what the public wants and …

Fifth…Or Forty-Ninth? Examining Educational Rankings In Arkansas, Reed Greenwood, Gary W. Ritter Feb 2013

Fifth…Or Forty-Ninth? Examining Educational Rankings In Arkansas, Reed Greenwood, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

Media outlets, as well as many leaders across the state, have recently been trumpeting the Natural State’s fifth-place ranking in the latest release of Education Week’s Quality Counts, which assigns letter grades to every state on a menu of education measures, to suggest that Arkansas schools “rank fifth in the country.” On the other hand, the state received a D on the Student Achievement category of Quality Counts and many Arkansans are accustomed to seeing Arkansas ranked at or near the bottom among all states on measures related to education and economic well-being. For example, on measures of college degree …

Research Brief: "Risk Of Incarceration And Other Characteristics Of Iraq And Afghanistan Era Veterans In State And Federal Prisons", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief examines data from The Health Care for Reentry Veterans (HCRV) to compare the risk of incarceration of veterans in order to identify socio-demographic and clinical characteristics in incarcerated veterans. OEF/OIF/OND veterans appeared to be at lower risk of incarceration than veterans of other service eras, but those who were incarcerated had higher rates of PTSD and would benefit from policies that fund accessible programing aimed at increasing vocational training and increasing educational opportunities. In future studies, researchers should focus on the implementation of PTSD treatment services for the incarcerated veteran population, including the success rate of various programs …
