Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Willamette Valley Winery Association, Oregon Winery Association, Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development, and Oregon Department of Agriculture asked the authors to develop information needed to help inform discussions regarding the replacement for the soon-to-sunset HB 3280. HB 3280, signed by the Governor in August of 2011, provided a means for defining and regulating wine-related and non-wine-related events occurring or proposed to occur at wineries and vineyards in Oregon, often in exclusive farm use zones. Our charge was to investigate the following policy issue: How have wine regions permitted and managed a range of uses and activities at …

Fictive Learning In Choice Under Uncertainty: A Logistic Regression Model, Donald J. Brown, Oliver D. Bunn, Caterina Calsamiglia Mar 2013

Fictive Learning In Choice Under Uncertainty: A Logistic Regression Model, Donald J. Brown, Oliver D. Bunn, Caterina Calsamiglia

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper is an exposition of an experiment on revealed preferences, where we posite a novel discrete binary choice model. To estimate this model, we use general estimating equations or GEE. This is a methodology originating in biostatistics for estimating regression models with correlated data. In this paper, we focus on the motivation for our approach, the logic and intuition underlying our analysis and a summary of our findings. The missing technical details are in the working paper by Bunn, et al. (2013). The experimental data is available from the corresponding author: [email protected] . Assessing The Potential Contribution Of Vacant Land To Urban Vegetable Production And Consumption In Oakland, California, Nathan Mcclintock, Jenny Cooper, Snehee Khandeshi

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

As urban agriculture grows in popularity, researchers are attempting to quantify its potential contribution to local food systems. We present the results of a vacant land inventory conducted in collaboration with the HOPE Collaborative, a multi-stakeholder, community-based initiative in Oakland, CA, USA. Vacant lots, open space, and underutilized parks with agricultural potential were identified using GIS and aerial imagery. Using visual interpretation, we identified 1201 ac (486.4 ha) of public land and 337 ac (136.4 ha) of private land that could potentially be used for vegetable production. Based on USDA loss-adjusted consumption data, we calculated the potential contribution of these …

Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, And Sex Trafficking In The Media: A Content Analysis, Katie Ann Martin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The following analysis focuses on the issues of sexual assault, domestic violence, and sex trafficking in media portrayals. A content analysis was done on six film releases, two for each of the topics. Prevalence of myths, stereotypes, victim portrayal, perpetrator portrayal, and final outcomes/consequences were reviewed within each of the films, along with overall themes present. The content analysis results found that some myths are present and vary by category. The most common theme in the movies was the ineptitude of the criminal justice system to successfully intervene and aid victims. Another commonly occurring theme was that victims must escape …

The Dangers Of Diversity: Ethnic Fractionalization And The Rule Of Law, Michael Touchton Mar 2013

The Dangers Of Diversity: Ethnic Fractionalization And The Rule Of Law, Michael Touchton

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research linking ethnic cleavages to economic underdevelopment is a hallmark of recent efforts to explain economic growth. Similarly, the rule of law as a credible commitment to property rights and contract enforcement is also identified with economic development. Rather than treating these factors as rival explanations for economic development around the world, I propose the rule of law as the causal mechanism through which ethnic fractionalization (EF) influences growth in many countries. I argue ethnic diversity negatively impacts the rule of law due to the prevalence of ethnically-based patronage networks in developing countries. Public officials, I argue, face greater incentives …

Exchange Rate Pass-Through To Domestic Prices In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Abdulrasheed Zubair, George Okorie, Aliyu R. Sanusi Mar 2013

Exchange Rate Pass-Through To Domestic Prices In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Abdulrasheed Zubair, George Okorie, Aliyu R. Sanusi

Economic and Financial Review

This paper uses the impulse response from an estimated structural autoregressive model of the inflation process to estimate the dynamic exchange rate pass-through to consumer prices for Nigeria, using quarterly data for the period 1986-20I0. The results suggest that the exchange rate pass-through is incomplete, low and fairly slow. On impact, for instance, the elasticity of inflation to exchange rate changes is about 0.02, and it takes about eight quarters to reach its full-impact of only 0.26. We argue that given the large share of imports in Nigeria's consumption basket, this surprisingly low pass-through indicates that importers practice the so-called …

Determinants Of Income Velocity Of Money In Nigeria, Peter N. Okafor, Tersoo S. Shitile, Danladi Osude, Chidi C. Ihediwa, Olamide H. Owolabi, Verse C. Shom, Emmanuel T. Agbadaola Mar 2013

Determinants Of Income Velocity Of Money In Nigeria, Peter N. Okafor, Tersoo S. Shitile, Danladi Osude, Chidi C. Ihediwa, Olamide H. Owolabi, Verse C. Shom, Emmanuel T. Agbadaola

Economic and Financial Review

In this paper, the authors set out to empirically investigate the determinants of income velocity of money in Nigeria, using quarterly time series from 1985:1 to 2012:4. The paper confirms a positive and statistically significant relationship between the growth of income and the velocity of money, which supports the quantity theory of money. Interest rate also has a positive and significant relationship with the income velocity of money. The financial sector development variable adopted, growth rate of stock market capitalization, has a negative relationship with the income velocity of money. The variance decomposition and impulse response results identified inflation rate …

A Panel Analysis Of Oil Price Dynamics, Fiscal Stance And Macroeconomic Effects: The Case Of Some Selected African Countries, Joseph A. Omojolaibi, Festus O. Egwaikhide

Economic and Financial Review

The study makes use of quarterly data that spans the period from 1990:q1 to 2010:q4. A panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) technique was employed to examine the impact of oil price dynamics on the economic performance of five (5) oil exporting countries in Africa. The countries are: Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Libya and Nigeria. In order to achieve this, the study used the following variables: Oil price volatility, real gross domestic product (real GDP), fiscal deficit, gross investment and money supply shocks. The impulse response functions show that of all the macroeconomic variables considered, gross investment responds more to oil price volatility …

The Role Of Governance On Private Investment In Nigeria: A Preliminary Analysis, Kazeem B. Ajide Mar 2013

The Role Of Governance On Private Investment In Nigeria: A Preliminary Analysis, Kazeem B. Ajide

Economic and Financial Review

The paper sets out to investigate the role of governance on domestic private investment in Nigeria using Auto-Regressive Distributed Log (ARDL) Bounds Testing Approach to ascertain long-run association on an annual data covering the 1970 to 2010 period. Emanated from the estimated models are intriguing findings which showed clearly that difference exists between long and short run determinants of domestic private investment. In the former, degree of openness, previous value of inflation rates and governance indicators are the most important factors but political stability and voice and accountability indicators appear to dominate the governance indicators space as they are both …

Protecting The Whole: A Review, Phebian N. Bewaji Mar 2013

Protecting The Whole: A Review, Phebian N. Bewaji

Economic and Financial Review

The aftermath of the 2007 global financial crisis marked a turning point in financial system regulation, generating a "renewed" interest among global regulators in the use of macroprudential policy to promote financial system stability. In this regard, the article discussed some shortcomings of traditional regulation and promoted the need for a broader and systemic approach to financial system stability using both traditional (micro-prudential) and non-traditional (macroprudential) policies. The paper further discussed the elements of macroprudential policy and tools used to mitigate risks and vulnerabilities in the financial system. A summary of the article is presented in section II and comments …

Awareness And Beliefs Regarding Intimate Partner Violence Among First-Year Dental Students, Rhonda J. Everett, Karl Kingsley, Christina A. Demopoulos, Edward E. Herschaft, Christine Lamun, Sheniz Moonie, Timothy J. Bungum, Michelle Chino

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Intimate partner violence (IPV) may affect one to four million individuals per year in the United States, with women accounting for the majority of both reported and unreported cases. Dental professionals are in a unique position to identify many types of IPV because injuries to the head and neck may be indicators or predictors of IPV abuse. Fewer than half of dental programs surveyed have reported having IPV-specific curricula, and most dental students surveyed have reported having little experience or training to recognize IPV. Based on this information, this pilot study sought to assess the awareness and beliefs regarding IPV …

Canada–Us Border Communities: What The People Have To Say, Leslie R. Alm, Ross E. Burkhart Mar 2013

Canada–Us Border Communities: What The People Have To Say, Leslie R. Alm, Ross E. Burkhart

Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper investigates the Canada-U.S. borderlands relationship along the two geographic corridors as bounded by Lake Superior: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario–Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Thunder Bay, Ontario–Duluth, Minnesota. Borderland communities—driven by their shared cultural characteristics (ethnicity, language, religion)—are said to challenge the border as a dividing device and undermine the very essence of international borders. Moreover, borderlands regions are dynamic and overlapping, providing the first point of contact and interaction between nations. We use interviews of over 200 people living in these borderlands regions to investigate the cross-border relationships of Canada-U.S. border communities. We find that despite the challenges …

Defining Safety For Universities: The Slippery Conceptual Slope, Pam Jenkins

DRU Workshop 2013 Presentations – Disaster Resistant University Workshop: Linking Mitigation and Resilience

In this presentation, we address the issue of the fragility of campus safety. The uniqueness of a college campus creates a context for safety that requires an intentional and specific understanding. Campus life for many is no longer (or perhaps never was) ‘an ivory tower’— a place separated and protected from the rest of the community. However, many still have the attitude that a campus is not like the real world in the United States. And in fact, colleges and universities are often much safer and more open than communities around them. Yet, ask any student affairs director or safety …

Serving God In The Midst Of Multiple Sclerosis: A Holistic And Spiritual Model For Physical Sustainment, Timothy Harville

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Multiple Sclerosis is a devastating disease that affects not only the one who suffers with MS, but also their family and relationships leaving the patient feeling depressed and without hope. If the disease is disclosed, many churches and the International Mission Board will reject the person's application because of the potential cost and medical care needed. This author was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis in 2008. This writer has experienced the obstacles described above. This model will serve as a motivational tool to help all of us who suffer with MS to use the disability for …
