That Awkward Moment When I Accidentally Internalized Racism, Rashida Aluko-Roberts Mar 2013

That Awkward Moment When I Accidentally Internalized Racism, Rashida Aluko-Roberts

SURGE

I recently attended a conference about the importance of Africana Studies (AFS) and it had a panel of visiting professors that consisted of mostly black men and women. I was beyond impressed by their achievements and found myself engaged and excited by their discussions. My admiration for these scholars only grew exponentially when I learned that one of the female professors was from Sierra Leone, just like me! [excerpt]

Lateralized Difference In Tympanic Membrane Temperature: Emotion And Hemispheric Activity, Ruth E. Propper, Tad T. Brunyé Mar 2013

Lateralized Difference In Tympanic Membrane Temperature: Emotion And Hemispheric Activity, Ruth E. Propper, Tad T. Brunyé

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We review literature examining relationships between tympanic membrane temperature (TMT), affective/motivational orientation, and hemispheric activity. Lateralized differences in TMT might enable real-time monitoring of hemispheric activity in real-world conditions, and could serve as a corroborating marker of mental illnesses associated with specific affective dysregulation. We support the proposal that TMT holds potential for broadly indexing lateralized brain physiology during tasks demanding the processing and representation of emotional and/or motivational states, and for predicting trait-related affective/motivational orientations. The precise nature of the relationship between TMT and brain physiology, however, remains elusive. Indeed the limited extant research has sampled different participant populations …

Feasibility Study Of Consolidating Public Safety Answering Points In Richland County, Ohio, Daila Shimek, Eugene Kramer, Patrick Johnson Mar 2013

Feasibility Study Of Consolidating Public Safety Answering Points In Richland County, Ohio, Daila Shimek, Eugene Kramer, Patrick Johnson

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

This report provides an assessment of the feasibility of consolidation of two public safety answering points in Richland County, Ohio. The report describes the methodology used to assess the feasibility. The findings are that consolidation of dispatch services among the potential participating entities is feasible. Consolidation of services would reduce capital costs expended across the county for public safety emergency dispatching over the long term. Given the proposed investment equipment and staff, the level and quality of service provided by a consolidated dispatch center should exceed those currently being supplied.

The Youth Bulge, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The focus on short-term economic difficulties – the fiscal deficit, inflation, the exchange rate and foreign exchange reserves – is rendering us oblivious to an impending human resource crisis. There is barely any awareness or realisation of this, among public policy makers or even opinion makers.

Guidance On Performing Focused Ethnographies With An Emphasis On Healthcare Research, Gina M.A Higginbottom, Jennifer J. Pillay, Nana Y. Boadu

The Qualitative Report

Focused ethnographies can have meaningful and useful application in primary care, community, or hospital healthcare practice, and are often used to determine ways to improve care and care processes. They can be pragmatic and efficient ways to capture data on a specific topic of importance to individual clinicians or clinical specialties. While many examples of focused ethnographies are available in the literature, there is a limited availability of guidance documents for conducting this research. This paper defines focused ethnographies, locates them within the ethnographic genre, justifies their use in healthcare research, and outlines the methodological processes including those related to …

Automatic Detection Of Idiomatic Clauses, Anna Feldman, Jing Peng Mar 2013

Automatic Detection Of Idiomatic Clauses, Anna Feldman, Jing Peng

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We describe several experiments whose goal is to automatically identify idiomatic expressions in written text. We explore two approaches for the task: 1) idiom recognition as outlier detection; and 2) supervised classification of sentences. We apply principal component analysis for outlier detection. Detecting idioms as lexical outliers does not exploit class label information. So, in the following experiments, we use linear discriminant analysis to obtain a discriminant subspace and later use the three nearest neighbor classifier to obtain accuracy. We discuss pros and cons of each approach. All the approaches are more general than the previous algorithms for idiom detection …

Turning Followers Into Dollars: The Impact Of Social Media On A Movie’S Financial Performance, Joshua J. Kaplan Mar 2013

Turning Followers Into Dollars: The Impact Of Social Media On A Movie’S Financial Performance, Joshua J. Kaplan

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper examines the impact of social media, specifically Twitter, on the domestic gross box office revenue of 207 films released in the United States between 2009 and 2011. We find that under two different specifications the impact of Twitter on gross revenue and gross revenue per theater is statistically significant when accounting for several control variables. The models show statistical significance of runtime, and production budget. We also find that a film’s release period, genre, rating received, and whether or not it is based on previous material proved to be statistically significant factors in determining a film's domestic gross.

Scientometric Analysis Of Scientific Products With Co-Authorship Networks: The Case Of Sharif University Of Technology, Maryam Asadi, Somayeh Joolaei, Saman Saqhafi, Azam Bazrafshan

SLIS Connecting

Identifying the most important individuals, institutions, universities, and other academic activities related to scientific production can help in collaborating and also exchanging information in various fields of science. Scientific cooperation plays an important role in promoting qualitative and quantitative scientific publications. One of the forms of collaboration is co-authorship in which two or more authors collaborate to create scientific work. Co-authorship relationships form collaboration networks that can be analyzed and visualized. The structure of networks like co-authorship can reflect the degree of internal collaboration and show the changes of information through time and other variables
