Migration And Children's School And Labor: Evidence From El Salvador, Zachary Intemann Mar 2013

Migration And Children's School And Labor: Evidence From El Salvador, Zachary Intemann

Master's Theses

This paper examines the impact of parental migration on schooling outcomes for children left behind in El Salvador. Using cross sectional data collected in 2012, outcomes for children are observed for children with migrant parents. The outcomes are also analyzed by gender of the migrant parent who left his or her child behind. Results are observed using instrumental variable estimations, as well as a seemingly unrelated regression to estimate the impact of migration on a child’s time allocation. Outcomes are also analyzed measuring the impact of remittances. Results show that children with at least one migrant parent will complete more …

Organizational Culture And Corruption: A Multiple Case Study Of Non-Governmental Organizations In Kenya, Douglas Kimemia Mar 2013

Organizational Culture And Corruption: A Multiple Case Study Of Non-Governmental Organizations In Kenya, Douglas Kimemia

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this dissertation is to examine if there is a significant relationship between organizational culture and tolerance of corrupt practices among the Non-Governmental Organizations located in Kenya. Despite the fact that NGOs have been attributed with a strong organizational culture, previous literature indicates that there is a connection between the organizational culture and decisions to engage in corrupt practices. Another purpose is to investigate tolerance of corrupt practices and determine the dominant organizational culture among NGOs. The study applied the competing values framework, which describes four dimensions of organizational culture. Mixed methods techniques were used to collect …

Factors Mediating After-School Participation And Delinquency, John Andrew Whitney Mar 2013

Factors Mediating After-School Participation And Delinquency, John Andrew Whitney

Theses and Dissertations

Utilizing Social Control Theory, this study explores the role of participation in After School Programs, mentoring relationships, and commitment to school in reducing adolescent delinquency. This study uses local survey data of 556 youth attending Boys and Girls Clubs collected from 2010-2012. The negative binomial regression results indicate that increased club attendance is associated with reduced delinquency. This effect is mediated by the presence of a mentor and by the youths' commitment to school.

‘Big Bang’ Opportunity, Ishrat Husain Dr. Mar 2013

‘Big Bang’ Opportunity, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The proponents of “big bang” reforms argue that the latter will bring about a fundamental shift in people’s expectations about the future by altering the existing structure of the economy. Detractors say that the resulting dislocation to the economy and uncertainty will do more harm than good. The capacity of the state to implement so many sectoral and micro-economic reforms simultaneously is limited and therefore the risks of failure are high. They point to the sale of state-owned assets at rock-bottom prices to a group of Russian oligarchs — a direct result of hasty, ill-prepared and opaque privatisation. Faced with …

When Pandora’S Box Is Opened: A Qualitative Study Of The Intended And Unintended Impacts Of Wyoming’S New Standardized Tests On Local Educators’ Everyday Practices, Jeasik Cho, Brian Ebhard Mar 2013

When Pandora’S Box Is Opened: A Qualitative Study Of The Intended And Unintended Impacts Of Wyoming’S New Standardized Tests On Local Educators’ Everyday Practices, Jeasik Cho, Brian Ebhard

The Qualitative Report

In the context of a newly adopted statewide assessment system, PAWS (Proficiency Assessment for Wyoming Students), this paper describes intended instructional changes and unintended outcomes in classrooms and schools as a result of an assessment policy involving an innovative online portion of the test. An elementary school was selected and prolonged qualitative fieldwork with in - depth and focus group interviews were conducted for 1½ years. A constant comparative data analysis and interpretation from grounded theory methodology led to the following themes: adaptive implementation policy, teachers’ dilemmas, instructional change, and school culture change. While observing an elusive role for teachers …

Interviewing Key Informants: Strategic Planning For A Global Public Health Management Program, Karen E. Kun, Anisa Kassim, Elizabeth Howze, Goldie Macdonald

The Qualitative Report

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Sustainable Management Development Program (SMDP) partners with low - and middle - resource countries to develop management capacity so that effective global public health programs can be implemented and better health outcomes can be achieved. The program’s impact however, was variable. Hence, there was a need to both engage in a strategic planning process and collect useful data to inform the process. We therefore designed a qualitative evaluation and findings that emerged concerning o ur program’s contribution to individual career advancement and professional growth; the need for institutional support and a champion to …

Subjectivity Not Statement And Not Apa!, Dana Cihelkova Mar 2013

Subjectivity Not Statement And Not Apa!, Dana Cihelkova

The Qualitative Report

I inspect in a brief theoretical - philosophical essay the roots of subjectivity and suggest many possible directions for examining the phenomenon of subjectivity so that multiple different meanings can be revealed. For instance, a researcher can explore her or his own subjectivity or he/she can attempt to define subjectivity per se or the researcher can uncover subjectivity or merely learn about subjectivity. I propose that subjectivity is an inner essence of flux and ask if it is even possible to fully capture a researcher’s subjectivity. Another proposition is to view subjectivity as an inner essence of each and every …

Youth Drug Use In Turkey: A Test Of The General Strain Theory, Fatih Cipil Mar 2013

Youth Drug Use In Turkey: A Test Of The General Strain Theory, Fatih Cipil

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the effect of strain on youth drug use in Turkey. With its many unexplored fields, Turkey is a haven for social researchers. Adolescent crime and especially drug use is an important yet poorly studied subject in Turkey. Of the many correlates of youth drug use, strain as asserted by the General Strain Theory of Agnew (1985) is chosen as the main explanatory variable in this research. Using Youth in Europe (YIE) survey data administered to a representative sample of high school students in Istanbul City, correlates of marijuana, LSD, amphetamine and ecstasy use among adolescents are analyzed …

Crowdsourcing Transcriptions Of Archival Materials, Aaron G. Noll Mar 2013

Crowdsourcing Transcriptions Of Archival Materials, Aaron G. Noll

Graduate History Conference, UMass Boston

Crowdsourcing is a method that has been effectively used to pool the knowledge and skills of large numbers of online volunteers for the creation of information resources utilized by historians, genealogists, and scientists. In recent years, archivists have begun to crowdsource the transcription of their handwritten records. Transcription of such records has traditionally been completed by professional transcribers who are skilled in reading multiple handwriting styles, knowledgeable about the creators and historical context of the records, and can interpret varying record formats and genres. However, increasingly limited resources of time and money have made traditional transcription more difficult to accomplish. …

Born Digital: Event-Driven Archives, Vincent Capone

Graduate History Conference, UMass Boston

The growth of the internet has brought numerous tools and opportunities for archivists to both enhance their collections and reach out to potential patrons. Archives across the globe have begun immense digitization efforts to bring collections into the digital age and make them accessible to a broader audience. But what challenges face new archives whose collections are born-digital? How do these archives prove that they are indeed an archival facility and not simply a memory institution? These questions have risen around numerous digital archives born in the past decade to document and commemorate social events and tragic disasters, including the …

The Moving Targets Of Teaching And Technology: Virtual Reference As Information Literacy Intermediary, Melanie Mills, Jennifer Robinson Mar 2013

The Moving Targets Of Teaching And Technology: Virtual Reference As Information Literacy Intermediary, Melanie Mills, Jennifer Robinson

Technology in Education Symposium (TIES)

Libraries have been moving traditional services to the digital environment for some time now; first, with a measure of reluctance and now with enthusiasm (Anderson 2011, 290). But is the act of migrating library services to online platforms, in and of itself, enough? Have we sufficiently addressed the challenges and fully realized the opportunities that technology affords? Using virtual reference as a case study, we will explore the pedagogical role of academic librarians in higher education. In particular, we will attempt to address the following questions: What can virtual reference teach us about our role as teachers? Is it possible …

Access Copyright & Technology: Legal And Policy Issues In Education, Lisa Di Valentino Mar 2013

Access Copyright & Technology: Legal And Policy Issues In Education, Lisa Di Valentino

FIMS Presentations

Access Copyright is a collective organization representing the
copyright interests of publishers and creators. The collective offers
copyright licences that allow certain limited uses of works in the
collective's repertoire. The use of collective licences as part of
copyright management policy was common in post-secondary education
administration until 2010, when many universities opted out of a
contractual relationship with Access Copyright.

The growing movement towards online open access publishing and
Creative Commons public licensing has made information more widely
available without requiring payment and with fewer restrictions on
use. The addition of education to the list of fair dealing purposes …

The Effect Of Attachment On The Therapeutic Alliance In Couples Therapy, Shawn A. Bills Mar 2013

The Effect Of Attachment On The Therapeutic Alliance In Couples Therapy, Shawn A. Bills

Theses and Dissertations

There is substantial evidence that the strength of the therapeutic alliance in couples therapy is predictive of successful treatment outcome. However, little research has examined the factors that predict a strong therapeutic alliance in couples therapy. With evidence indicating that attachment styles play an important role in the development of healthy adult relationships, it was hypothesized that the attachment styles of partners in couples therapy would predict the development of a strong therapeutic alliance. Data from 115 heterosexual couples seen at a university-based MFT clinic in the southeastern region of the U.S. were used to test this hypothesis. Using multiple …

Sustainable, Affordable Housing For Older Adults: A Case Study Of Factors That Affect Development In Portland, Oregon, Alan Kenneth Delatorre Mar 2013

Sustainable, Affordable Housing For Older Adults: A Case Study Of Factors That Affect Development In Portland, Oregon, Alan Kenneth Delatorre

Dissertations and Theses

Portland, Oregon, is considered to be a leader in sustainable development. Government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and businesses have been innovators in policymaking and practice that is aimed at creating a more sustainable city. Despite population aging, little is known about how or whether planners and developers consider older persons in terms of sustainable development. Thus, this study examined the case of sustainable, affordable housing developed for low-income adults aged 55 and older. Interviews with 31 key informants were conducted in order to answer three research questions: What is the meaning of sustainable development in Portland, Oregon, as it pertains to …
