Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
The recent attention to the United States’ educational system has revealed that many students, especially those in underserved communities, are not receiving a quality education. The goal of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is to ensure that all children receive a high quality education (U.S. Department of Education 2001). The purpose of this study is to determine whether the No Child Left Behind Act has contributed to the academic success of the students in Cobb and Fulton counties in Georgia.
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) required all states to develop standardized tests and accountability systems …

The Federation of Southern Cooperatives (FSC) is an organization that grew out of the Civil Rights Movement. It was founded in 1967 when 22 cooperatives held their first meeting at Atlanta University. In 1985, the Federation of Southern Cooperatives merged with the Emergency Land Assistance Fund and became the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund (FSC/LAF) to address African American land loss. John Zippert, one of the founding members, put together the organization structure of the FSC in 1967 and the FSC/LAF has used the same to this day (Federation of Southern Cooperatives 2013).
The FSC/LAF provides training and resources …

A Case Study Of Corruption And Public Accountability In Nigeria, Chinelo Okekeocha
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
In 2011, Nigeria was ranked 143th out of 182 countries surveyed by the Transparency International in its corruption perception index indicating the level of corruption in the country as compared to other countries. Although this came as an improvement from the previous years, it did not result from an improved system of governance, rather it was due to an increase in the number of countries that participated in the survey. Between 2010 and 2011, Nigeria’s rank actually decreased by 9 spots, showing an increase in corruption despite the efforts of the government to rid the nation of corruption. This survey …

Ethical behavior on the part of public administrators has been understood to be one of the guiding principles of public service. When public administrators decide to cross the line into behavior that is not only considered to be unethical but unlawful, they have not only put their own careers and livelihood in jeopardy, they have betrayed the public’s trust. Betrayal of the public trust by state and public university employees was one of the motivating forces behind Georgia House Bill 1113 (2008). This legislation which subsequently resulted in significant changes to the University System of Georgia’s policy regarding the reporting …

The purpose of this study is to examine college students’ punitive attitudes toward five different types of sex offenders. In addition, various factors that influence college students’ punitive attitudes will be measured in order to assess their significance. Surveys were administered to a total of 809 students at a large southern university. Through the utilization of descriptive vignettes, the survey measured students’ demographic, educational, attitudinal, and crime-related characteristics as well as recommended sanction and punishment preferences for five different sex offenders. The results suggest that college students’ punitive attitudes significantly differ based on sex offender characteristics. Through ordinary least squares …
Exploring The Extent To Which The Utilization Of Technology Has Facilitated The Increased Possession Of Online Child Pornography Over Time, Abby Lukas
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
The possession and distribution of online child pornography is a growingly pervasive problem and its pessimistic effects and dimensions are far-reaching in today’s society. With the steady increase in these types of offenses, it is pertinent that a better understanding of this heinous crime is addressed through various research endeavors. A research avenue significantly lacking in regard to these types of crimes is the extent to which the utilization of technology is further facilitating these types of crimes. Thus, it is the objective of the present study to specifically address these issues with its relationship to technology. In order to …
Deciding To Fight: A Cross-Cultural Comparative Study On Decision-Making In Conflict Situations, Rebecca Kay Lefebvre
Deciding To Fight: A Cross-Cultural Comparative Study On Decision-Making In Conflict Situations, Rebecca Kay Lefebvre
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
Does culture matter in decision-making? Existing literature largely assumes that the cognitive processes that inform decision-making are universally applicable, while only very few studies indicate that cultural norms and values shape cognitive processes. Using a survey based quasi-experiment, I examine cross-country differences in cultural traits and decision-making processes among undergraduate students in the U.S. and Ghana. A comparison between the groups shows the constraining impact of culture at three levels: individual, societal, and situated. At an individual level, those who are more collectivist are more dependent in their decision-making. At a societal level, students from a collectivist society (Ghana) are …

Woman Into The Wild: Female Thru-Hikers And Pilgrimage On The Appalachian And Pacific Crest Trails, Lucy L. Bosche
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis follows solo women hikers as they embark upon walking either the Pacific Crest Trail or the Appalachian Trail from beginning to end. By witnessing the ways in which the women hikers navigate the counter-culture of the trails, a critique of American society is revealed. This paper focuses on the differences between trail culture and normative culture, the transformations the hikers undergo, and how the hikes have affected the women’s lives.

Female Political Participation In Women’S Colleges Vs. Coeducational Institutions, Sara Maria Estevez Cores
Scripps Senior Theses
The current study examined the factors that affect female political participation in students at women’s colleges and coeducational institutions. The first part of the study consisted of building a model to explain female political participation based on previous research findings. The second part of the study consisted of examining differences between the model and the levels of participation among the two groups. Results showed that only self-esteem, femininity, feminist identification and knowledge of female political leaders significantly impacted political participation. No structural differences in the model were found between the groups. Students at women’s colleges had significantly higher means in …

Protest is a method used to oppose power or enact change. It is a multifaceted idea in that the type of protest used depends directly on the attainability of the goal. I will discuss the properties of protest and then show how individuals in Enrique’s Journey and Dorothy Day's Loaves and Fishes approach the act of protesting differently based on the actuality of the goals to be accomplished.

The Political Landscape Of Hydraulic Fracturing: Methods Of Community Response In Central Arkansas, Alyssa M. Solis
The Political Landscape Of Hydraulic Fracturing: Methods Of Community Response In Central Arkansas, Alyssa M. Solis
Pitzer Senior Theses
This thesis looks at the current fracking debate on a national scale, before focusing specifically on how this debate is playing out in the landscape of Central Arkansas. Focusing on the lack of national regulation, the unique array of state regulations that have popped up are assessed in their effectiveness on the ground through speaking with residents of the area. The demographics of these residents are analyzed within an assessment of environmental injustice vulnerability. This ethnographic approach also compares the de jure v. de facto outcomes of these regulations through the narratives of residents working with organizations across the political …

"This Is Not Just My Story; It's Part Of Who I Am": A Symbolic Interactionist Perspective Of Battered Women's Identity Negotiations, Jessica Edel Harrelson
Dissertations
Over the past several decades, domestic violence has increasingly received more attention from both academic and local communities. Despite this attention, it persists as a significant social problem, suggesting that a full understanding of battering is still lacking. This dissertation examines women’s lived experiences with battering, what effect abuse has on how they come to define and interact with themselves, and subsequent negotiations of identity that occur within their relationships. To accomplish this, I conducted multiple in-depth qualitative interviews with fourteen women that were being served by a domestic violence agency in a rural part of the Midwest.

Increasing Following Headway In A Driving Simulator And Transfer To Real World Driving, Michelle Arnold
Dissertations
The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effects of a package intervention including prompts, goal setting, feedback, education and behavioral self-monitoring to increase following headway (decrease tailgating) of four young university student drivers in a simulated driving environment. Another purpose of the present study was to determine if the effects of the package intervention would maintain in the simulator and transfer to real world driving by installing a black box video camera in the participants’ vehicle. During intervention drivers were prompted to increase following headway and were provided a specific target for following headway. The participants were …
Exploring The Experiences Of Counselor Educators Recognized For Their Excellence In Teaching, Allison E. Buller
Exploring The Experiences Of Counselor Educators Recognized For Their Excellence In Teaching, Allison E. Buller
Dissertations
Teaching is a deeply held value for counselor educators. Nonetheless, counselor education programs have historically provided only minimal attention to preparing doctoral students to actually teach. Furthermore, little of the research in the field of counselor education addresses the way counselor educators are prepared to teach. Using qualitative methods, this author engaged counselor educators identified as excellent teachers in an examination of meaningful experiences that contributed to their development as faculty in counselor education. By exploring experiences that prepared them to teach, excellent teachers provided the next generation of faculty members with rich descriptive strategies for teacher preparation in counselor …
Developing A Game-Theoritic Analysis Of Terrorism, Matthew A. Love
Developing A Game-Theoritic Analysis Of Terrorism, Matthew A. Love
Masters Theses
My research demonstrates the applicability of game theory to analyzing terrorism through consideration of multiple examples. These examples provide a foundation upon which further research involving the application of game theory to terrorism can be explored.
My research contributes to a growing body of literature, especially since the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, in which it has been argued that terrorists are rational agents and, because of that, game theory can be usefully applied to an analysis of terrorism. My research further supports this conclusion.

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
Abstract of Project
Systems analyst and organizational behavior expert Margaret Wheatley (2006) compared healthy systems to spider webs. She contended that if a web breaks and needs repair, the spider doesn’t cut out a piece or tear the web apart; instead, she reweaves it, “using the silken relationships that are already there, creating stronger connections across the weakened spaces”(p.146). For my Master’s project, I created a website for the rural sea island community where I live--Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. Following Wheatley’s advice to consider organizations as webs of relations rather than relying on the common paradigm of looking at organizations …

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Information literacy (IL) continues to be a major area of focus for academic librarians. Even as forces of change in the form of severe budget reductions, loss of positions, shifts in collection management, and changing technologies, have hit libraries hard in the early 21st century, their commitment to providing high quality IL instruction remains strong. An examination of recent strategic plans from academic libraries reveals continued emphasis on the teaching role of librarianship with organizational units dedicated to IL instruction and student engagement.1 IL initiatives across campuses have moved well beyond the traditional face-to-face instruction session and now librarians deliver …
