Floristic Variation Among Gravel Bars In A Subalpine River, Montana, Usa., George Malanson, D. Butler
Floristic Variation Among Gravel Bars In A Subalpine River, Montana, Usa., George Malanson, D. Butler
George P Malanson
The presence and abundance of plant species on active geomorphological surfaces, such as fluvial gravel bars in subalpine rivers, may reveal different effects of the environment, location, and chance on the assemblage of species during succession. Two-dimensional ordination mapping of species and correlations of abundance with simple environmental variables were used to examine relationships between the individual species and this dynamic environment. The ordination indicates that species are segregated by adaptations suggestive of successional pathway and successional stage. An examination of the distribution of species abundances plotted against the environmental variables reveals few distinct relationships. The differences in species abundances …

A Real-Time In Vivo Dosimetric Verification Method For High-Dose Rate Intracavitary Brachytherapy Of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, Zhen-Yu Qi, Xiao-Wu Deng, X Cao, Shao-Min Huang, Michael Lerch, Anatoly Rosenfeld
Michael L.F. Lerch
Purpose: A real-time in vivo dosimetric verification method using metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) dosimeters has been developed for patient dosimetry in high-dose rate (HDR) intracavitary brachytherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods: The necessary calibration and correction factors for MOSFET measurements in 192Iridium source were determined in a water phantom. With the detector placed inside a custom-made nasopharyngeal applicator, the actual dose delivered to the tumor was measured in vivo and compared to the calculated values using a commercial brachytherapy planning system. Results: Five MOSFETs were independently calibrated with the HDR source, yielding calibration factors of 0.48 ± 0.007 cGymV. …

Estimating Age: College Males Versus Convicted Male Child Sex Offenders, Robert Marsh, Sergio Romero, Steven Patrick
Sergio Romero
Two samples, male college students and convicted male child sex offenders, are compared on their abilities to accurately estimate the age group of a series of photographs of a sole female ranging in age from 11 to 29. Both samples tend to overestimate the age group of the subject photos, and no significant difference was found between college students and convicted child sex offenders in their ability to estimate the age of females. Both groups are compared demographically, and only limited differences were found. The implications are discussed in regard to theory and prevention of child sexual abuse.

Brain Drain: Do Economic Conditions “Push” Doctors Out Of Developing Countries?, Edward Okeke

Health worker migration is an issue of first order concern in global health policy circles and continues to be the subject of much policy debate. In this paper, we contribute to the discussion by studying the impact of economic conditions on the migration of physicians from developing countries. To our knowledge, this is one of the first papers to do so. A major contribution of this paper is the introduction of a new panel dataset on migration to the US and the UK from 31 sub-Saharan Africa countries. The data spans the period 1975-2004. Using this data, we estimate the …

Immigration Policing And Federalism Through The Lens Of Technology, Surveillance, And Privacy, Anil Kalhan

With the deployment of technology, federal programs to enlist state and local police assistance with immigration enforcement are undergoing a sea change. For example, even as it forcefully has urged invalidation of Arizona’s S.B. 1070 and similar state laws, the Obama administration has presided over the largest expansion of state and local immigration policing in U.S. history with its implementation of the “Secure Communities” program, which integrates immigration and criminal history database systems in order to automatically ascertain the immigration status of every individual who is arrested and booked by state and local police nationwide. By 2012, over one fifth …
Cognitive Parallels Between Moral Judgment And Modal Judgement, Andrew Shtulman, Lester Tong
Cognitive Parallels Between Moral Judgment And Modal Judgement, Andrew Shtulman, Lester Tong
Andrew Shtulman
A central question in the study of moral psychology is how immediate intuition interacts with more thoughtful deliberation in the generation of moral judgments. The present study sheds additional light on this question by comparing adults’ judgments of moral permissibility with their judgments of physical possibility—a form of judgment that also involves the coordination of intuition and deliberation (Shtulman, Cognitive Development 24:293–309, 2009 ). Participants ( N = 146) were asked to judge the permissibility of 16 extraordinary actions (e.g., Is it ever morally permissible for an 80-year-old woman to have sex with a 20-year-old man?) and the possibility of …

The Case Of Performance Measurement In Mobility Management Programs, Sarmistha Majumdar, Lalita Sen, Meredith Highsmith, Linda Cherrington
The Case Of Performance Measurement In Mobility Management Programs, Sarmistha Majumdar, Lalita Sen, Meredith Highsmith, Linda Cherrington
Sarmistha R Majumdar
The concept of mobility management has gained popularity over the last few decades. It refers to the provision of accessible, affordable, and multimodal transportation for all, including those who cannot or do not drive due to age, disability, or lower income. Mobility management programs can be found in large cities, urban areas, and rural areas. Evaluation of these programs is difficult in the absence of national guidelines. Consequently, many programs have developed their own measures, while others lag in performance measurement. This case study investigates the performance measures used to evaluate some established mobility management programs. Based on analysis of …

The Semantics Of Cyber Warfare 网络战的语义, Jason Fritz

The study of cyber warfare in China suffers from the same excess of overlapping terminology as English documents. This paper will analyze key cyber warfare terms from authoritative sources and show that all of them can be broken down into three fundamental branches that are common to both the People’s Republic of China and the United States of America. The three branches are: Information Operations, Computer Network Operations, and Net Centric Warfare. Streamlined categorizing can aid the efficiency of research and improve inter-agency structure. Additional benefits include more accurate threat assessment, limiting media and public misunderstanding, and increasing transparency to …

Understanding How Advance Care Planning Is Approached In The Residential Aged Care Setting: A Continuum Model Of Practice As An Explanatory Device, Christopher Shanley, Elizabeth Whitmore, Angela Khoo, Colleen Cartwright, Amanda Walker, Robert Cumming
Professor Colleen M Cartwright
Objective: To gain an understanding of how advance care planning (ACP) is understood and approached by managers of residential aged care facilities.
Methods: Qualitative interviews with managers from 41 residential aged care facilities from South Western Sydney, Australia. Content and thematic analysis of interview transcripts.
Results: The majority of facilities do not have a systematic approach to ACP, but tend to initiate discussions about end-of-life treatments late in a resident's illness. There are varying degrees to which these discussions are used in ongoing care planning or made explicit if the resident is transferred to hospital. A number of factors are …

Professor Colleen M Cartwright
Objective To determine the extent to which physicians in different countries intend to inform terminal patients and relatives about prognosis, and to identify physician characteristics associated with an active approach to such discussions. Methods In the context of a European research project, a study on disclosing prognosis was conducted in seven countries. A written questionnaire with questions regarding hypothetical cases and actual practices was sent to physicians from specialties involved in the care of dying patients. Results 10,139 questionnaires were studied. The response rate was greater than 50% in all countries except Italy (39%). The percentage of physicians who indicated …

Professor Colleen M Cartwright
Background: Whereas there is broad agreement that euthanasia should be performed by physicians only, this is contested for (physician-) assisted suicide.
Methods: We conducted a survey to investigate whether European and Australian physicians see morally relevant differences between assisted suicide and euthanasia, and whether, after a possible legalization of assisted suicide, they believe it should be performed by physicians only.
Results: 10 139 questionnaires were studied. 76% of the physicians in Belgium, 66% in the Netherlands, 62% in Australia, 48% in Denmark, 44% in Switzerland, and 10% in Sweden thought that assisted suicide should be performed by physicians only. 16% …

Living Among Guatemalan Mayans Is Fascinating Experience, Irene Scharf

I have just lived a dream. Five years ago I learned of a school where students of all ages could study Spanish intensively while living among the Guatemalan Mayans. Peace Accords had been signed in 1996, the government was encouraging tourism, and it was, finally, safe to visit.
Why a dream? Because, 25 years ago, when I traveled through Central and South America, I promised my family I would avoid Guatemala because of the perceived was dangers. During that trip, as I met my Europeans and other who had visited, remained safe, and found it a fascinating country, I vowed …

Synthesis Of Novel Sugar Diamino Acids, M Thillakan, A Katsifis, D Skropeta

Sugar amino acids (SAAs) are found in nature as good construction elements for the preparation of peptide mimetics and oiigosaccharides in drug design and development. The synthesis of SAAs is readily accomplished in few steps and more than 40 SAAs have been synthesised to date.2 Sugar amino acids with an additional amino group, the sugar diamino acid (SDAs) would represent a useful expansion to the library of SAAs available because one of the amino group and carboxylic acid is available for peptide coupling and the another amino/azide group allow to do further derivatisation via peptide or click chemistry such as …

In this review we discuss the local index formula in noncommutative geomety from the viewpoint of two new proofs are partly inspired by the approach of Higson especially that in but they differ in several fundamental aspedcts, in particular they apply to semifinite spectral triples for a *s-subalgebra A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. Our proofs are novel even in the setting of the original theorem and reduce the hypotheses of the theorem to those necessary for its statement. These proofs rely on the introduction of a function valued cocycle which is 'almost' a (b, B)-cocycle in the …

Sorry to disappoint, but this talk is not the ultimate guide on how to avoid working. It is instead an example of a workflow paradigm shift and supportive technology that will allow us to use the eight hours at our desks more efficiently.
Working in higher education, we are continuously faced with budget cuts that directly impact the amount and variety of our daily tasks. The official job descriptions barely reflect the actual day-to-day work we encounter: we wear many hats and have to carefully manage our time as well as the increasing number of projects. Tedious maintenance of content …

The Role Of Family Ties In Mitigating Moral Hazard: Firm-Level Evidence From Tamil Nadu, India, Goldie Chow
The Role Of Family Ties In Mitigating Moral Hazard: Firm-Level Evidence From Tamil Nadu, India, Goldie Chow
Goldie Chow
Drawing on firm-level data from the district of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, India, this study explores the role of family ties as a means to counteract potential moral hazard concerns. It is shown that firms will be more likely to employ family relations when faced with a higher hidden context for moral hazard. Specifically, the analysis finds that the presence of family members within the firm is higher when the firm provides general training and that firms that are more likely to do external business with family relations when it is believed that the legal system is not effective. Additionally, …
