Blood-Speak: Ward Churchill And The Racialization Of American Indian Identity, Casey R. Kelly
Blood-Speak: Ward Churchill And The Racialization Of American Indian Identity, Casey R. Kelly
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
After publishing a controversial essay on 9/11, Professor Ward Churchill's scholarship and personal identity were subjected to a hostile public investigation. Evidence that Churchill had invented his American Indian identity created vehemence among many professors and tribal leaders who dismissed Churchill because he was not a “real Indian.” This essay examines the discourses of racial authenticity employed to distance Churchill from tribal communities and American Indian scholarship. Responses to Churchill's academic and ethnic self-identification have retrenched a racialized definition of tribal identity defined by a narrow concept of blood. Employing what I term blood-speak, Churchill's opponents harness a biological concept …

The Poetics Of Professionalism Among Dialysis Technicians, Laura L. Ellingson
The Poetics Of Professionalism Among Dialysis Technicians, Laura L. Ellingson
Gender and Sexuality Studies
The vast majority of care for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients is provided by skilled (but not formally educated) paraprofessional technicians. Using Goffman's (1959) framing of the performance of self in everyday discourse, this study examines discourse from dialysis technicians and technical aides to explore these paraprofessionals' construction and performance of professional identity and professional communication within the context of an outpatient dialysis clinic. Themes of professionalism—individualized care, vigilance, teamwork, and emotion management—are illustrated via poetic transcription of interviews with technicians. I contend that such representation offers validity equal to that of traditional research accounts while embodying alternative representational strengths.
It Can Be Taught: Explorations Into Teaching The Foundations For Multicultural Effectiveness, Randall E. Osborne, Paul Kriese, John M. Davis
It Can Be Taught: Explorations Into Teaching The Foundations For Multicultural Effectiveness, Randall E. Osborne, Paul Kriese, John M. Davis
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Connections are drawn between the development of intercultural sensitivity, interpersonal skills, and critical thinking. A case is made that fostering particular critical thinking skills in courses enhances interpersonal skills, and that enhanced interpersonal skills facilitate movement along Bennett’s (1993) proposed continuum of development of intercultural sensitivity. Discussion centers on how to integrate these qualities (e.g., critical thinking, intercultural sensitivity, and interpersonal skills) and facilitate them in courses. Furthermore, it introduces a call for research on how to test these assumptions with experiences beyond the classroom.

Two- and three-year-olds are busy, independent, and eager to explore. Learn the milestones of this growth stage and how you can help them develop new and positive skills and abilities.
The life of a two- or three-year-old is exciting, busy, and very demanding. Two-year-olds have grown to be very independent, using favorite words such as “Mine,” “No,” and “I do it!” as they strive for autonomy. When caring for a two- or three-year-old, enthusiasm, patience, and a sense of humor are most important. This is a time when just exploring can look more like trouble-making to an adult. Fair rules …

Three-, four- and five-year-olds are active, imaginative, and increasingly independent. Learn about their developmental milestones and how you can help further develop their skills and confidence.
Three-, four-, and five-years-olds are active, imaginative, and eager to engage in the world around them. They are building skills and becoming more confident. At this stage, children have many “why” questions. Parents and caregivers can provide the preschooler with lots of support and a responsive and stimulating environment. As you help the 3- to 5-year-old child become more imaginative and confident, here are a few developmental milestones to consider.

During the second year of development, toddlers grow and develop rapidly as they learn new things and explore their world. Learn what milestones to watch for and how you can provide a safe and supportive environment for your child’s development.
Children 12 to 24 months old are learning, exploring, and communicating at a rapid rate, growing from dependent infants to more independent toddlers. They may challenge the patience, sense of humor, and even common sense of a parent or caregiver. Be prepared to “baby proof” the entire home, yard, and outside environments. This stage can be fun and rewarding as …

Colorado's Large Snow Events' Impact On Tree Ring Growth And Dillon Reservoir, Katrina Leona Marzetta
Colorado's Large Snow Events' Impact On Tree Ring Growth And Dillon Reservoir, Katrina Leona Marzetta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Meteorological observations from 1894 through 2010 suggest that 17 historically large snow events occurred in the mountains of Colorado within Denver's water supply region. Of these 16 events, 14 can be identified in precipitation sensitive tree ring records as positive climatic pointer years. If these storms were to occur today, they would have the potential to fill reservoirs in Denver Water's supply system, even after years of sustained drought. These "drought busters" have the potential to refill Dillon Reservoir by increasing average yearly inflow up to 146% of the previous year's inflow. Such drought busters can help Denver recover from …
Structured Finance And Its Effects On Macroeconomic Stability, Brian Charles Fahey
Structured Finance And Its Effects On Macroeconomic Stability, Brian Charles Fahey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The tools and techniques of structured finance have changed banking remarkably over the past twenty years. This area grew to become larger than the sum total of traditional banking deposits in 2007. Despite this, the field is poorly understood and its connection to macroeconomic stability was underestimated until the credit crisis. This paper explores the structured finance market in three phases. First, the market is broken into parts based on the incentives and motivations of each of the three major agents in the field. Next, a critical review of pricing models that are used to justify the valuations of the …

Nebraska Rural Poll
By many different measures, rural Nebraskans are positive about their community. Many rural Nebraskans rate their community as friendly, trusting and supportive. Most rural Nebraskans also say it would be difficult to leave their community. In addition, most rural Nebraskans disagree that their community is powerless to control its future.
Differences of opinion exist by the size of their community. Residents of smaller communities are more likely than residents of larger communities to rate their community favorably on its social dimensions and to have positive sentiments about their community. However, residents of larger communities are more likely than residents of …

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Bias in terms of culture has been posing threat to cross-cultural research since the very beginning of crosscultural endeavor. Metric and statistical methods have been discussed in literature in order to deal with this type of bias; however, some of these methods show side-effects on the level of scale validity and some others with so stringent effects on the available information and allow for very limited variance to be interpreted. The present twofold study describes yet another method, this time based on country clusters, following the idea introduced by Georgas & Berry (1995) of employing country sets based on their …

Assessing Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing Attitudes Among African Immigrants, Hazel Namona Nachembe
Assessing Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing Attitudes Among African Immigrants, Hazel Namona Nachembe
Theses Digitization Project
This study attempted to assess and explore the attitudes of African immigrants towards HIV testing and seeking HIV services in the U.S. The pool of HIV/AIDS cases among blacks at risk in the United States does not clearly distinguish between African Americans and Black African immigrants in regard to attitudes on HIV testing. A closer exploration of African immigrants as specific black sub-groups within the larger group of blacks or African Americans infected with HIV may help distinguish and explain the increase in incidents and high risk behaviors among blacks.
