An Examination Of The Organizational Factors That Contribute To Police Officer Perceived Organizational Support, Dustin Cody Gaines
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of various organizational arrangements on police officers' belief that they and their work are valued by the department. This study examines four management domains and their impact on officers' feelings of being valued. These four management domains are: inclusiveness in decision-making, supervisor relationships, professionalism. and communicated direction. The data came from a sample of 176 survey respondents who are patrol officers in a Southern Californian municipal police department.

Institutions, The Rise Of Commerce And The Persistence Of Laws: Interest Restrictions In Islam And Christianity, Jared Rubin
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
Why was economic development retarded in the Middle East relative to Western Europe, despite the Middle East being far ahead for centuries? A theoretical model inspired and substantiated by the history of interest restrictions suggests that this outcome emanates in part from the greater degree to which early Islamic political authorities derived legitimacy from religious authorities. This entailed a feedback mechanism in Europe in which the rise of commerce led to the relaxation of interest restrictions while also diminishing the Church's ability to legitimise political authorities. These interactions did not occur in the Islamic world despite equally amenable economic conditions.

Reading, Writing, And Religion: Institutions And Human Capital Formation, Latika Chaudhary, Jared Rubin
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper, we empirically test the role that religious and political institutions play in the accumulation of human capital. Using a new data set on literacy in colonial India, we find that Muslim literacy is negatively correlated with the proportion of Muslims in the district, although we find no similar result for Hindu literacy. We employ a theoretical model which suggests that districts which experienced a more recent collapse of Muslim political authority had more powerful and better funded religious authorities, who established religious schools which were less effective at promoting literacy on the margin than state schools. We …
Course-Integrated Information Literacy Instruction In Introduction To Accounting, Anne Kelly, Teresa Williams, Brad Matthies, J. B. Orris
Course-Integrated Information Literacy Instruction In Introduction To Accounting, Anne Kelly, Teresa Williams, Brad Matthies, J. B. Orris
Scholarship and Professional Work
Two groups of students, enrolled in Introduction to Accounting, volunteered to participate in a pedagogical study to assess course-integrated information literacy instruction. Only one group had received information literacy instruction in an earlier business course. Academic librarians provided three instruction sessions, and students completed a semester-long case to evaluate a company as a potential investment. The results suggest that information literacy skills can be learned for application in subsequent coursework. This research also provides some evidence of significantly greater improvement in information literacy and significantly higher perceptions of course-integrated instruction benefits by students who had not received the previous instruction.
Experience-Dependent Synapse Formation And Implications For Developmental Psychopathology, Monica Lawson, Meg Upchurch
Experience-Dependent Synapse Formation And Implications For Developmental Psychopathology, Monica Lawson, Meg Upchurch
Modern Psychological Studies
Experience shapes neural circuits in the brain. This review explores current research in neuroscience on experience-dependent synapse formation in mice. Studies using the chessboard trimming paradigm are analyzed to provide information on the effects of partial versus complete deprivation. The resulting formation of transient spines and new persistent spines indicates the impact experience has on shaping neural pathways. Research on long-term sensory deprivation in the adolescent and adult somatosensory cortex indicates that once brain pathways are established in adulthood, they are difficult to change. Together these findings are applied to the questions presented in the literature of developmental psychopathology, such …

Making Wto Remedies Work For Developing Nations: The Need For Class Actions, Phoenix X.F. Cai
Making Wto Remedies Work For Developing Nations: The Need For Class Actions, Phoenix X.F. Cai
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
At the heart of the WTO lies a set of rules and negotiated trade terms, such as tariffs, designed to promote trade liberalization or the removal of barriers to free trade. When a WTO member nation violates a rule or trade term, the affected nation or nations may bring a complaint under the dispute settlement procedures of the WTO.2 When nations win cases at the WTO, the preferred remedy is that the losing nation withdraws the offending measure or rule. This action is akin to stopping the embezzlement going forward. The remedy is purely prospective. If withdrawal occurs, the suit …

Earth- and space-based observations provide synergistic information for space mission encounters by providing data over longer timescales, at different wavelengths and using techniques that are impossible with an in situ flyby. We report here such observations in support of the EPOXI spacecraft flyby of comet 103P/Hartley 2. The nucleus is small and dark, and exhibited a very rapidly changing rotation period. Prior to the onset of activity, the period was ~16.4 hr. Starting in 2010 August the period changed from 16.6 hr to near 19 hr in December. With respect to dust composition, most volatiles and carbon and nitrogen isotope …

Disordered Eating Patterns And Alcohol Misuse In College Students: Evidence For “Drunkorexia”?, V. Osborne, K.J. Sher, Rachel Winograd
Psychology Faculty Works
IntroductionRisky drinking and disordered eating patterns, including eating disorders, are common among college students; approximately 30% of female students have reported restricting calories to “save them” for drinking. Restricting food or calories along with heavy alcohol consumption is a recipe for disaster, increasing the risk of health and behavioral consequences. Research is lacking on the motivations regarding these alcohol-related eating patterns, termed drunkorexia in recent popular media stories.MethodsThe analysis examines data from a health survey given to college students in a Psychology 1000 class at a large Midwestern university. Students completed an online survey including questions regarding calorie restriction as …
The Adam Walsh Act: Juveniles And Sex Offender Registration And Notification, Kallee Spooner
The Adam Walsh Act: Juveniles And Sex Offender Registration And Notification, Kallee Spooner
Undergraduate Review
Increased public concerns of juvenile sex offenders fueled the passage of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act in 2006. The media coverage of these adolescents and public perception were influential in the enactment of this policy. Public fear is aroused by isolated incidents of deviance or crime. Media accounts highlight extreme cases, instead of more common incidents of sexual assaults (Harris & Lurigio, 2010). The fear culminates in the forming of groups of experts and concerned citizens that demand reform. Legislators cite media and views of their constituents as their primary sources of information about sex offenses and …

The Effects Of Massachusetts’ Decriminalization Of Marijuana Law On Use Patterns, Keriann Speranza
The Effects Of Massachusetts’ Decriminalization Of Marijuana Law On Use Patterns, Keriann Speranza
Undergraduate Review
The practice of smoking marijuana was imported to the United States from Mexico in the early 1900s. Fear around the use of marijuana provoked sixteen states to pass laws prohibiting the use of marijuana by 1930 (Becker, 1963). It was not until 1937 that the United States Congress passed the Marihuana Tax Act to stamp out use of the drug after the Bureau of Narcotics presented to the public in a series of propaganda films and news articles the perceived dangers of marijuana use – including violence (Becker, 1963). Since that law, the United States government has attempted to create …
Exploring Recovery Experiences Of Women In Alcoholics Anonymous, Linda Myllmaki
Exploring Recovery Experiences Of Women In Alcoholics Anonymous, Linda Myllmaki
Undergraduate Review
Twelve step recovery programs are prevalent in the United States, however, there is relatively little empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of these programs for female alcoholics or addicts. How women experience the process of recovery within the twelve-step model is critical to our overall understanding of the recovery process. This article reports the results of an exploratory qualitative study of women in Alcoholics Anonymous. Through the use of semi-structured interviews, nine women were asked to discuss their personal experiences of recovery in the AA program. Grounded theory methodology was utilized to analyze the data. Reasons for joining AA, meeting attendance, …

Foreign Direct Investment, Non-Traded Goods And Real Wages, Reza Oladi, John Gilbert, H. Beladi
Applied Economics Faculty Publications
Using a three‐sector general equilibrium model with non‐traded goods, we investigate the impact of foreign direct investment on the real wages of skilled and unskilled workers. We show that foreign direct investment increases the real wages of skilled and unskilled workers alike, but widens the gap between the two under plausible conditions.

Contextual Ontology Alignment Of Lod With An Upper Ontology: A Case Study With Proton, Prateek Jain, Peter Z. Yeh, Kunal Verma, Reymonrod G. Vasquez, Mariana Darnorva, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
The Linked Open Data (LOD) is a major milestone towards realizing the Semantic Web vision, and can enable applications such as robust Question Answering (QA) systems that can answer queries requiring multiple, disparate information sources. However, realizing these applications requires relationships at both the schema and instance level, but currently the LOD only provides relationships for the latter. To address this limitation, we present a solution for automatically finding schema-level links between two LOD ontologies – in the sense of ontology alignment. Our solution, called BLOOMS+, extends our previous solution (i.e. BLOOMS) in two significant ways. BLOOMS+ 1) uses a …
Why Altered States Are Not Enough: A Perspective From Buddhism, Igor Berkhin, Glenn Hartelius
Why Altered States Are Not Enough: A Perspective From Buddhism, Igor Berkhin, Glenn Hartelius
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Transpersonal psychology has at times employed Buddhist terminology in ways that do not
reflect distinctions that underlie these tightly defined terms. From a Buddhist perspective,
attempts to equate Buddhist terms with language from other traditions are misdirected, and
produce results that no longer represent Buddhism. For example, it is an error to translate
certain Buddhist terms as referring to a shared universal consciousness; Buddhism explicitly
rejects this idea. Nor is it appropriate to assume that the generic, cross-traditional altered
state of nondual awareness postulated in some transpersonally-related circles is in any way
related to nirvana or other advanced states described …
