Soft Power Struggle: Ai Weiwei And The Limits Of Sino-German Cultural Cooperation, Adam Cathcart Jan 2011

Soft Power Struggle: Ai Weiwei And The Limits Of Sino-German Cultural Cooperation, Adam Cathcart

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

As an attempt to drain the seemingly endless reserves of paranoia fed by China’s rise, the extension of Chinese “soft power” [ruan shi li 软实力] into Western Europe is one of the more interesting stories of our day. How the Chinese Communist Party uses culture and cultural exchange to shape its image in Europe varies, like any good guerrilla strategy, depending on conditions. In the performing arts, PRC-sponsored groups tour European stages, acting out a meta-drama that pits twirling autonomous-region Uighurs against the ubiquitous Falun Gong-affiliated Shen Yun ballerinas (and their army of granny pamphleteers). Embassy-sponsored photographic exhibits celebrating modernization …

Transmen: The Hiv Risk Of Gay Identity, Stefan Rowniak, C Chesla, C D. Rose, W L. Holzemer

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

Many female-to-male transgender individuals, or transmen, are situated within the gay community, one of the highest risk communities for HIV, yet there has been little research regarding the experience of risk for these transmen. Seventeen transmen were interviewed regarding their sexuality and HIV risk behavior. Fourteen of the 17 reported having non-trans gay men as sexual partners. Risk behaviors included not using condoms with multiple partners who were HIV-positive, or of unknown HIV status. Aspects of risk included the unfamiliarity of the gay community and the lack of safe sex negotiating skills. The dynamics of acceptance and rejection between transmen …

Analysis On Partial Relationship In Lod, Kalpa Gunaratna, Sarasi Lalithsena, Cory Andrew Henson, Prateek Jain

Kno.e.sis Publications

Relationships play a key role in Semantic Web to connect the dots between entities (concepts or instances) in a way that enables to absorb the real sense of the entities. Some interesting relationships would give proof for the existence of subject and object in triples which in tern can be defined as evidential relationships. Identifying evidential relationships will yield solutions to some existing inference problems and open doors for new applications and research. Part_of relationships are identified as a special kind of an evidential relationship out of membership, causality and etc. Linked Open data as a global data space would …

Finding The Right Metaphor: Restructuring, Realigning, And Repackaging Today’S Research Libraries, Joan Giesecke Jan 2011

Finding The Right Metaphor: Restructuring, Realigning, And Repackaging Today’S Research Libraries, Joan Giesecke

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

To change from collection-centric to user-centered research libraries and to survive in tough economic times, libraries face 2 major challenges: 1st, libraries need to change how they are viewed by their constituencies so they are seen as indispensable; and 2nd, libraries need to help the librarians and staff change their own mental models of their roles to remain relevant in these changing times. Metaphors are one way to help people connect terms in new ways so they develop new images of those terms. For more than 100 years, libraries have used metaphors to seek connections that will help people see …

The Deep Ecology Movement: Origins, Development, And Future Prospects (Toward A Transpersonal Ecosophy), Alan Drengson, Bill Devall, Mark A. Schroll Jan 2011

The Deep Ecology Movement: Origins, Development, And Future Prospects (Toward A Transpersonal Ecosophy), Alan Drengson, Bill Devall, Mark A. Schroll

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The deep ecology movement, which began with Arne Naess’ introduction of the term in

1972, is compared with other movements for social responsibility that developed in the

20th century. The paper discusses Naess’ cross-cultural approach to characterizing grassroots

movements via platform principles that can be supported from a diversity of cultures,

worldviews, and personal philosophies, and explains his use of “ecosophy.” The deep ecology

movement’s relationship with ecopsychology, ecocriticism, and humanistic and transpersonal

psychology is described as part of an emerging synthesis referred to as transpersonal ecosophy.

The inquiry concludes with a technical discussion of Naess’ Apron Diagram and reflections …

Jung At The Foot Of Mount Kailash: A Transpersonal Synthesis Of Depth Psychology, Tibetan Tantra, And The Sacred Mythic Imagery Of East And West, Judson Davis Jan 2011

Jung At The Foot Of Mount Kailash: A Transpersonal Synthesis Of Depth Psychology, Tibetan Tantra, And The Sacred Mythic Imagery Of East And West, Judson Davis

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Tibetan Buddhist Tantra and Jungian depth psychology represent two of the world’s more

dynamic psycho-spiritual traditions. This comparative study explores their respective

insights, cosmologies, and often striking similarities, with particular emphasis on the

manner in which mythic imagery is employed in both disciplines as a powerful agent

of healing and transformation. The ontological status of Tibetan deities and archetypal

entities is also given careful consideration, especially in relation to the phenomena of

psychic projection and autonomous spiritual dimensions.

No More Freeways: Urban Land Use-Transportation Dynamics Without Freeway Capacity Expansion, Lei Zhang, We Xu Jan 2011

No More Freeways: Urban Land Use-Transportation Dynamics Without Freeway Capacity Expansion, Lei Zhang, We Xu

TREC Final Reports

Observations of the various limitations of freeway capacity expansion have led to a provocative planning and policy question – What if we completely stop building additional freeway capacity. From a theoretical perspective, as a freeway transportation network matures, there exists a saturation point beyond which any additional freeway capacity would only be counterproductive from a welfare point of view, and worsen the existing urban transportation problems. Traditional benefit/cost analysis of individual freeway capacity expansion projects often ignores long-term induced demand and land use changes and does not represent a systems approach to this important theoretical issue. From a practical perspective, …

Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment For Incarcerated Youth: A Mixed Method Pilot Study, Sam Himelstein Jan 2011

Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment For Incarcerated Youth: A Mixed Method Pilot Study, Sam Himelstein

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The current study investigated the effects of an 8-week mindfulness-based substance use intervention

on self-reported impulsiveness, perceived drug risk, and healthy self-regulation in a sample of 60

incarcerated youth. Forty-eight participants completed questionnaires pre and post intervention.

Additionally, 16 participants from two of the final 8-week cohorts were interviewed in focus groups

about their experience of the program immediately following its completion. A mixed-method

embedded model was used, in which qualitative data was used in support of quantitative data. Paired

t-tests revealed a significant decrease (p < .01) in impulsiveness and a significant increase (p < .05)

in perceived risk of drug use from pretest to posttest. No …

Connectedness And Environmental Behavior: Sense Of Interconnectedness And Pro-Environmental Behavior, Robert E. Hoot, Harris Friedman Jan 2011

Connectedness And Environmental Behavior: Sense Of Interconnectedness And Pro-Environmental Behavior, Robert E. Hoot, Harris Friedman

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The expansion of one’s sense of identity to include various aspects of the world, both human

and non-human, may relate to how one treats the world. This sense of interconnectedness

can be domain specific, as through identification with nature and the future, or very

general, as through an expanded transpersonal identification with all of reality unlimited

by time and space. This study explored the relationship between these two specific and

the more general type of interconnectedness on environmental beliefs and behavior. A

sample of 210 participants completed a battery of interconnectedness measures, including

two specific measures, the Connectedness to Nature …
