Probabilistic Inferences For The Sample Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Jeffrey R. Harring, John A. Wasko

Fisher’s correlation transformation is commonly used to draw inferences regarding the reliability of tests comprised of dichotomous or polytomous items. It is illustrated theoretically and empirically that omitting test length and difficulty results in inflated Type I error. An empirically unbiased correction is introduced within the transformation that is applicable under any test conditions.

Non-Homogenous Poisson Process (NHPP), also known as the Power Law process (PLP) or the Weibull Process, is used to evaluate the effectiveness of a given treatment for Stage I & II ductal breast cancer patients. The behavior of the shape parameter of the intensity function is examined to evaluate the response of a given treatment with respect to its effectiveness for a cancer subject.

On Maximum Likelihood Estimators Of The Parameters Of A Modified Weibull Distribution Using Extreme Ranked Set Sampling, Amer Ibrahim Al-Omari, Said Ali Al-Hadhrami

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Extreme ranked set sampling (ERSS) is considered to estimate the three parameters and population mean of the modified Weibull distribution (MWD). The maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is investigated and compared to the corresponding one based on simple random sampling (SRS). It is found that, the MLE based on ERSS is more efficient than MLE using SRS for estimating the three parameters of the MWD. The ERSS estimator of the population mean of the MWD is also found to be more efficient than the SRS based on the same number of measured units.

Identifying Outliers In Fuzzy Time Series, S. Suresh, K. Senthamarai Kannan

Time series analysis is often associated with the discovery of patterns and prediction of features. Forecasting accuracy can be improved by removing identified outliers in the data set using the Cook’s distance and Studentized residual test. In this paper a modified fuzzy time series method is proposed based on transition probability vector membership function. It is experimentally shown that the proposed method minimizes the average forecasting error compared with other known existing methods.

Modeling Repairable System Failures With Interval Failure Data And Time Dependent Covariate, Jayanthi Arasan, Samira Ehsani

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

An application of a repairable system model for interval failure data with a time dependent covariate is examined. The performance of several models based on the NHPP when applied to real data on ball bearing failures is also explored. The best model for the data was selected based on results of the likelihood ratio test. The bootstrapping technique was applied to obtain the variance estimate for the estimated expected number of failures. Results demonstrate that the proposed model works well and is easy to implement, in addition the bootstrap variance estimate provides a simple substitute for the traditional estimate.

Salary Equity Studies: An Analysis Of Using The Blinder-Oaxaca Decomposition To Estimate Differences In Faculty Salaries By Gender, Sally A. Lesik, Carolyn R. Fallahi

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Parameter estimates for equity studies tested for stability are described. Bootstrap simulation can test whether parameter estimates remain stable given changes in the sample data; fractional polynomials can be used to access functional form specification; and variance inflation factors can be used to test for multicollinearity.

Higher Order C(T, P, S) Crossover Designs, James F. Reed Iii

A crossover study is a repeated measures design in which each subject is randomly assigned to a sequence of treatments, including at least two treatments. The most damning characteristic of a crossover study is the potential of a carryover effect of one treatment to the next period. To solve the first-order crossover problem characteristic in the classic AB|BA design, the design must be extended. One alternative uses additional treatment sequences in two periods; a second option is to add a third period and repeat one of the treatments. Advanced search algorithms developed mainly at research universities have turned into “monetization” and marketing opportunities for the mainstream (Think Google and its research origins at Stanford University.) Yet, there are those information professionals who view SEO with some reservation or even actual contempt due to the rampant SEO techniques that reduce the quality of search results by driving traffic

This report presents the results of a demographic study conducted by the Portland State University Population Research Center. The study includes analyses of population, housing and enrollment trends affecting the District in recent years, low, middle, and high range forecasts of district‐wide enrollment by grade level for the 2011‐12 to 2020‐21 school years and middle range forecasts of individual school enrollments for the 2011‐12 to 2015‐16 school years. The District’s K‐12 enrollment of 7,751 in 2010‐11 was nearly unchanged from 2009‐10, having declined by just 13 students (0.2 percent). In each of the six years between 2004‐05 and 2010‐ 11, …

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

In Fall 2011, Portland Public Schools (PPS) enrolled 46,206 students in grades K-12, an increase of 465 students from Fall 2010. This is the third consecutive year of enrollment growth, following 12 consecutive years of enrollment losses that occurred between 1996- 97 and 2008-09. For the three year period since 2008-09, PPS K-12 enrollment has grown by 1,182 students, or 2.6 percent. District administrators are already involved in comprehensive efforts to stem sexual harassment, teen violence and bullying; therefore, they may be well positioned to identify and address the problem of teen dating violence. Cognitive task analysis (CTA) captures unobservable cognitive processes, decisions and judgments of expert performance. Over 100 different CTA methods are identified in prior literature. However, existing classifications typically sort techniques by process rather than outcome, application or causal mechanism. Therefore, techniques can be misapplied and comparative analysis of methods made difficult. Based on the frequency distribution of CTA methods in 1065 studies, a subsample representing 60% of the most frequently published methods was coded based on elicitation and analysis techniques. Consistency of resulting applications was assessed. Inconsistent matching of CTA methods and subsequent applications indicate CTA is currently more craft …

The phenomenon of altruism extends from the biological realm to the human sociocultural realm. This paper sketches a coherent outline of multiple types of altruism of progressively increasing scope that span these two realms and are grounded in an ever-expanding sense of "self." Discussion of this framework notes difficulties associated with altruisms at different levels. It links scientific ideas about the evolution of cooperation and about hierarchical order to perennial philosophical and religious concerns. It offers a conceptual background for inquiry into societal challenges that call for altruistic behavior, especially the challenge of environmental and social sustainability.

The Impact Of An Enacted Social Support Training Intervention On Worklife Interaction And Stress In A Sample Of Working Adults, Justin P. Boren, Jess K. Alberts

The present investigation explores utilizes an enacted social support intervention among a group of working adults. Reductions in psychological and physiological stress were hypothesized to occur following the experimental intervention. Participants (N = 46) were all full time staff members at a large university and were randomly assigned to treatment or wait-list control groups. Treatment group members attended two 90 minute enacted social support meetings over the course of four weeks. Psychological (perceived stress and worklife conflict) and physiological (salivary cortisol) data were collected at both pretest and posttest periods. The U.S. Census estimated approximately 25.1% of Nevadans in 2006 to 2008 to be non-white, 27.3% speak English as a second language, and 24.9% Hispanic. The three most commonly spoken languages in Las Vegas are English, Spanish, and Tagalog, reflecting the growing Spanish-speaking and Asian communities in Southern Nevada. Service providers struggle with providing relevant services for these communities, to include addressing gendered violence. This project seeks to further current knowledge about gendered violence in Spanish-speaking and Asian communities, to examine the capacity of local providers, and identify possible linguistic and cultural barriers that may compound education, outreach, and intervention.

Events are central elements of human experience. Formally, they can be individuated in terms of the entities that compose them, the features of those entities, and the relations amongst entities. Psychologically, representations of events capture their spatiotemporal location, the people and objects involved, and the relations between these elements. Here, we present an account of the nature of psychological representations of events and how they are constructed and updated. Event representations are like images in that they are isomorphic to the situations they represent. However, they are like models or language in that they are constructed of components rather than …

This paper examines the conviction that robust peacekeeping—a strong and forceful peacekeeping force—works better than traditional UN peacekeeping mechanisms in reducing human rights violations, specifically, civilian killing, in areas of deployment. I seek to analyze both the operational and internal characteristics of UN peacekeeping operations in an effort to understand the hindrances to achieving the objective of protecting human rights. Specifically, the study examines the contributions of key structural variables, including the mission type, weapon type, rules of engagement, mission strength, and major power participation controlling for other intervening variables using negative binomial and logit regression models.
