Trip-based models are no longer adequate for some of the more complex questions. They fail to account for time of day sensitivity, dynamic congestion effects, variable pricing and tolls, and the reliability of both highways and transit. Existing activity/tour-based models lack the enhanced temporal element provided by a more dynamic, activity-based microsimulation. DASH is the next-generation model being developed by the Metro Research Center.

We consider the optimal design of flexible use in a digital-rights-management policy for a digital good subject to piracy. Consumers can acquire the digital good either as a licensed product or as an unlicensed copy. The ease of access to unlicensed copies is increasing in the flexibility accorded to licensed copies. The content provider has to trade off consumers’ valuation of a licensed copy against the sales lost to piracy. We enrich the basic model by introducing a “secure platform” that is required to use the digital good. We show that the platform allows for the socially optimal provision of …

We show that if agents are risk neutral, prizes outperform wages if and only if there is sufficient pride and envy relative to the noisiness of performance. If agents are risk averse, prizes are a necessary supplement to wages (as bonuses).

We provide methods for inference on a finite dimensional parameter of interest, θ in Re ^{ d _θ}, in a semiparametric probability model when an infinite dimensional nuisance parameter, g , is present. We depart from the semiparametric literature in that we do not require that the pair (θ, g ) is point identified and so we construct confidence regions for θ that are robust to non-point identification. This allows practitioners to examine the sensitivity of their estimates of θ to specification of g in a likelihood setup. To construct these confidence regions for θ, we invert a profiled sieve …

This is the graduation speech I gave on receiving an honorary doctorate at the University of Athens Economics and Business School. I talk about my Greek family, about how I got interested in economics, and then how in the 1990s I came to think about default, collateral, and leverage as the central features of the financial/macro economy, despite their complete absence (even now) from any textbooks. We discuss how leverage can be monitored for institutions, individuals, and assets. While traditionally the interest rate has been regarded as the important feature of a loan, we argue that leverage is sometimes even more important. Monitoring leverage provides information about how risk builds up during booms as leverage rises and how crises start when leverage on new loans sharply declines. Leverage data is also a crucial input for crisis management and lending facilities. Leverage at the asset level can be monitored by down payments or margin requirement or and haircuts, giving a model-free measure that can be observed directly, …

Limiting follow-up hypotheses to be tested can reduce problems relating to the control of Type I and Type II errors in multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Such limitations can also improve the interpretability of results. The importance of sample size, shape of population distribution, within-group correlations and heterogeneity of variances are demonstrated. The protected greatest characteristic root (GCR) procedure is shown to work well for small, group size, N (≤ 10). The unprotected GCR is shown to work well for larger N.

Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is frequently used in the social sciences and is a common component in many validity studies. A core aspect of EFA is the determination of which observed indicator variables are associated with which latent factors through the use of factor loadings. Loadings are initially extracted using an algorithm, such as maximum likelihood or weighted least squares, and then transformed - or rotated - to make them more interpretable. Two methods to calculate a measure for the quality of factor score estimates have been proposed. These methods were compared by means of a simulation study. The method based on a covariance matrix reproduced from a model leads to smaller effects of sampling error.

Probing the changing makeup of American college campuses, Adult Children of Immigrant Entrepreneurs: Memories and Influences offers unparalleled insight into the journeys of today’s graduate students born to immigrant entrepreneur parents.

Through interviews with 40 graduate students attending Massachusetts colleges from across the country, Adult Children of Immigrant Entrepreneurs unearths the unique challenges, skills and propensities engendered by growing up in a household where at least one parent ran a business. It also reveals that the students feel a deep-seated desire to give back to the immigrant communities into which they were born and which helped to mold their identities.

The present study sought to examine whether motivation as measured by 16 motives the Reiss Profile of Fundamental Goals and Motivation Sensitivities could predict the relative importance of goals as measured by the Aspiration Index. Five motive goal relationships were targeted as being prime candidates, Status – Popularity, Social Contact – Affiliation, Romance – Hedonism, Acceptance – Conformity, and Idealism – Community Feeling. 101 undergraduate students were administered both surveys. The results indicated that motivation did predict goal importance in all but one motive and goal pair. In addition, multiple regression analysis indicated motivation predicted goal importance for nine of …

The current study examines factors associated with participation and retention in a child sexual abuse (CSA) outpatient program. Participation and retention are vital if children are to receive the intended benefits of treatment designed to promote healthy coping following CSA. However, little is known about factors that impede or encourage families to consistently attend sessions. Several factors possibly related to child participation and retention were examined, including demographic variables such as income level and education, characteristics of the abuse, and parent and family pretreatment functioning. The development and application of a permutation test for compound symmetry is described. In a simulation study the permutation test appears to be a level-α test and is robust to non-normality. However, it exhibits poor power, particularly for small samples.

One commonly used model to analyze ordinal response data is the proportional odds (PO) model. However, if research interest is focused on a particular category and if an individual must pass through lower categories before achieving a higher level, the continuation ratio (CR) model is a more appropriate choice than the PO model. In addition, statistical software, such as Stata and SAS, may use different techniques to estimate the parameters. Using the Prais-Winsten correction and adding a lagged variable provides improved estimates (smaller MSE) in least absolute value (LAV) regression when moderate to high levels of autocorrelation are present. When comparing empirical levels of significance for hypothesis tests, adding a lagged variable outperforms other approaches but has a relative high empirical level of significance.

Designs involving sequences of treatments for test vs. control comparisons are suitable for research in which each experimental unit receives treatments over time in order to compare several test treatments to one (or more) control treatment(s). These designs can be advantageously used in screening experiments and bioequivalence trials. Three series of such designs are constructed in incomplete sequences wherein the first class of designs is variance balanced while the other two classes of designs are partially variance balanced for test versus test comparisons of both direct and residual effects of treatments.
