Ngos In Microfinance: Learning From The Past, Accepting Limitations, And Moving Forward., Bipasha Baruah Jan 2010

Ngos In Microfinance: Learning From The Past, Accepting Limitations, And Moving Forward., Bipasha Baruah

Data and Test Instruments

Over the past three decades, microfinance has become an extremely popular and populist development intervention. The Grameen Bank and its founder, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, were awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize and the Global Microcredit Summit in Halifax, Nova Scotia set itself the goal of lending to 175 million people around the world by 2015. Despite such global enthusiasm, the limitations of microfinance are gradually being acknowledged even by its most vociferous proponents. The vast majority of NGOs in microfinance not only face tremendous challenges in balancing outreach and financial sustainability, but there is also growing evidence of their failure …

Economic Ideas And Development Strategy: The Case Of London Ontario, Neil Bradford Jan 2010

Economic Ideas And Development Strategy: The Case Of London Ontario, Neil Bradford

Data and Test Instruments

The past two decades in Canada have witnessed significant economic restructuring and public policy innovation. While most research concentrates on federal recovery plans and provincial adjustment strategies, this article makes the case for studying actors and places on the restructuring front lines. Offering an ideational analysis of change dynamics in London, Ontario, a mid-sized manufacturing city, the article reveals a pattern of incremental policy adjustment even as bold ideas contesting the status quo were brought forward. Arguing that particular institutional-political settings operative at different governance scales shape the policy influence of ideas, the article situates the London experience in broader …

The Role Of The Media In Electoral Behaviour: A Canadian Perspective, Paul Nesbitt-Larking Jan 2010

The Role Of The Media In Electoral Behaviour: A Canadian Perspective, Paul Nesbitt-Larking

Data and Test Instruments

This work, divided in four sections, is a critical assessment of Canadian perspectives on the role of the media in electoral behaviour, notably on the roles media play in setting or responding to the agenda in the heat of election campaigns. The first section of the article highlights important Canadian methodological and empirical contributions to behaviouralism. The second section of the article, on culture, ideology, and discourse, illustrates general patterns of contrast between the Canadian and American political cultures through an exploration of the comparative role of negative and attack advertisements in election campaigns. The third section of the article …

The Political Psychology Of (De)Securitization: Place-Making Strategies In Denmark, Sweden, And Canada, Catarina Kinnvall, Paul Nesbitt-Larking Jan 2010

The Political Psychology Of (De)Securitization: Place-Making Strategies In Denmark, Sweden, And Canada, Catarina Kinnvall, Paul Nesbitt-Larking

Data and Test Instruments

In this article we demonstrate how both state structures and collective agencies contribute to patterns of securitization and, in so doing, reconfigure conceptions of space and place. Focusing on the life-chances of Muslim minority populations in Denmark, Sweden, and Canada, we begin by establishing how experiences of empire and colonization have shaped dominant regimes of citizenship and multiculturalism. Analyzing responses to the Danish newspaper publication of the 'Mohammed cartoons', we illustrate the dynamics of place making that are operative in the political psychology of securitization. Our analysis illustrates the cosmopolitical and dialogical character of Canadian multiculturalism and how such a …

Contextualism In Epistemology And The Context Sensitivity Of 'Knows', Robert Stainton Jan 2010

Contextualism In Epistemology And The Context Sensitivity Of 'Knows', Robert Stainton

Philosophy Publications

The central issue of this paper is whether contextualism in epistemology is genuinely in conflict with recent claims that ‘know’ is not in fact a context sensitive word. To address this question, I’ll first rehearse three key aims of contextualists and the broad strategy they adopt for achieving them. I then introduce two linguistic arguments to the effect that the lexical item ‘know’ is not context sensitive: one from Herman Cappelen & Ernie Lepore, one from Jason Stanley. I find these and related arguments quite compelling. In particular, I think Cappelen & Lepore (2003, 2005a) show pretty definitively that ‘know’ …

Validation Of The Patient Activation Measure In A Multiple Sclerosis Clinic Sample And Implications For Care, Lara Stepleman, Marie-Christine Rutter Goodworth, Judith Hibbard, Lisa Johns, Dustin Wright, Mary D. Hughes

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Purpose. Patient engagement in multiple sclerosis (MS) care can be challenging at times given the unpredictable disease course, wide range of symptoms, variable therapeutic response to treatment and high rates of patient depression. Patient activation, a model for conceptualising patients’ involvement in their health care, has been found useful for discerning patient differences in chronic illness management. The purpose of this study was to validate the patient activation measure (PAM-13) in an MS clinic sample.

Methods. This was a survey study of 199 MS clinic patients. Participants completed the PAM-13 along with measures of MS medication adherence, self-efficacy, depression and …

Delgadina: From Romance To Corrido On The Us-Mexico Border, Sara Soledad Garcia Jan 2010

Delgadina: From Romance To Corrido On The Us-Mexico Border, Sara Soledad Garcia

Teacher Education

This study examines in its context one variant of the Spanish romance of Delgadina transmuted into a Mexican corrido. Acknowledging the studies by Beatriz Mariscal and the feminist interpretations of Maria Henera-Sobek, this study is a departure from past critical work in that it attempts to examine the cognitive effect on both singers and listeners of the modern corrido form and the continuity of the tale and the theme of incest. Memory systems generated through popular song are examined as they relate to Delgadina's purpose as a tale, in terms of its social and moral message and impact. Interviews were …

A Gift In Exile: Leadership And Creativity In Babette’S Feast, Daniel Loftin Jan 2010

A Gift In Exile: Leadership And Creativity In Babette’S Feast, Daniel Loftin

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

I am a storyteller. One of my friends said about me that I think all sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story or tell a story about them, and perhaps this is not entirely untrue. To me, the explanation of life seems to be its melody, its pattern. And I feel in life such an infinite, truly inconceivable fantasy. -Isak Dinesen Isak Dinesen considered any work of art as a manifestation of its own unique inner laws (Whissen, 1973, p. 67). If we accept the quotation above as given, it is germane to ask what constitutes …

African American Relationship Schema Scale: Development And Validation, Syreeta Scott Jan 2010

African American Relationship Schema Scale: Development And Validation, Syreeta Scott

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In an effort to explain the markedly high HIV infection rate for African American women, several theories have been posited. One theory suggests that expectations about relationships (i.e., relationship schemas and scripts) may be useful in explaining this phenomenon. Qualitative research has identified several relevant relationship scripts for this population that seem to be associated with safer sex behaviors; however, limited quantitative research has been conducted to confirm and validate these findings. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a psychometrically sound self-report measure of relationship schemas in African American women (N=441). After initial item generation, pilot testing …

Using Teaching Faculty Focus Groups To Assess Information Literacy Core Competencies At University Level, Jodi Tyron, Emily Elizabeth Frigo, Mary Kathleen O'Kelly Jan 2010

Using Teaching Faculty Focus Groups To Assess Information Literacy Core Competencies At University Level, Jodi Tyron, Emily Elizabeth Frigo, Mary Kathleen O'Kelly

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Grand Valley State University librarians designed and conducted teaching faculty1 focus groups to gauge their response to a new information literacy (IL) core student competencies document created to support a developing library IL programme. Although the competencies were inspired by existing, widely known information literacy standards and guidelines the University Libraries’ Information Literacy Competencies document (ILCC) is unique and written specifically to address the university’s culture and curriculum. The authors of this paper formed a research team to assemble two groups of teaching faculty from various disciplines and to analyse focus group transcripts using a content analysis approach. The resulting …

Housing Choice Voucher Program;Patterns And Factors Of Spatial Concentration In Cleveland, Miseon Park Jan 2010

Housing Choice Voucher Program;Patterns And Factors Of Spatial Concentration In Cleveland, Miseon Park

ETD Archive

Housing Choice Voucher Program is the single largest housing subsidy program in the USA with the goal of poverty deconcentration and race desegregation. This study aims to identify the presence and locations of voucher holders' spatial concentration, and to investigate the factors associated with the location outcomes of voucher recipients in Cleveland from 2005 to 2009. Analyzing voucher recipients' information from Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, this dissertation found meaningful results for the voucher program performances. Hotspot analysis indicated that location patterns of voucher recipients do not show even distribution over the study area. Additionally, voucher holders have clustered together and …

To Reframe A Constitution: Public Service In A Consumptive State, Steven T. Salmi Jan 2010

To Reframe A Constitution: Public Service In A Consumptive State, Steven T. Salmi

ETD Archive

This normative analysis builds upon Ulrich Beck's world risk society theory to argue that the United States is making a shift of revolutionary proportions from an administrative state to a consumptive state. Public administration theory is assessed for its ability to address a consumptive state's unprecedented dynamics, e.g., accelerating technoscientific development and mega-hazards such as global warming. Qualitative evidence suggests that the field's adaptability has been limited by a continued, if generally unacknowledged, embrace of obsolete normative commitments such as to a politics-technoscience dichotomy, contempocentrism, and overconsumption. The sustainability movement, a discourse coalition with roots largely outside public administration, is …

Individual Growth Analysis Of Children's Reading Performance During The First Years Of School, Regina Giraldo Jan 2010

Individual Growth Analysis Of Children's Reading Performance During The First Years Of School, Regina Giraldo

ETD Archive

Using data from the National Center for Education Statistics (Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999 (ECLS-K)), the study utilized an individual growth model (Bryk & Raudenbush, 2002), the purpose of which was to assess the nature of progress in children's reading performance between kindergarten and 3rd grade and second, to determine the extent to which parental involvement predicts both the initial reading ability as well as the rate of progress. Children's cognitive development in reading was used as the dependent variable and parental involvement as the primary independent variable with gender and race/ethnicity as control variables. The study used …
