Rescaling The Past Through Mosaic Historical Cartography, Donald Lafreniere, Douglas Rivet
Rescaling The Past Through Mosaic Historical Cartography, Donald Lafreniere, Douglas Rivet
Geography & Environment Publications
Researchers of our past have long used historical maps to place events and to uncover the physical form of an area. A series of maps may be employed to understand a region beyond the extent of a single map. However, rarely are these maps included in publications of research findings. At best, a modern cartographic reproduction will be created to depict the research area. Our maps, created for a historical atlas of Sandwich, Ontario, Canada, are noteworthy for their use of original historical maps in a mosaic to recreate the past. Our objective was to overcome the international boundary between …
Linking Health Inequality And Environmental Justice: Articulating A Precautionary Framework For Research And Action, Sarah Wakefield, Jamie Baxter
Linking Health Inequality And Environmental Justice: Articulating A Precautionary Framework For Research And Action, Sarah Wakefield, Jamie Baxter
Geography & Environment Publications
This article draws together three issues—the environment, health, and (in)justice—with the overall purpose of articulating an agenda for policy and research that works towards improved justice and sustainability in the environmental health arena. Considerable research in the United States and elsewhere has shown that both environmental exposures and poor health are more prevalent in populations that are marginalized by race and social class (typically measured as income). The logical next step has been to attempt to establish concrete cause-effect links between health effects and environmental exposures in order to mobilize government action to reduce these disparities. However, we caution against …

Reaching For Environmental Health Justice: Canadian Experiences For A Comprehensive Research, Policy And Advocacy Agenda In Health Promotion, Jeffrey R. Masuda, Blake Poland, Jamie Baxter
Geography & Environment Publications
Spatial disparities in environmental quality and practices are contributing to rising health inequalities worldwide. To date, the field of health promotion has not contributed as significantly as it might to a systematic analysis of the physical environment as a determinant of health nor to a critique of inequitable environmental governance practices responsible for social injustice-particularly in the Canadian context. In this paper, we explore ways in which health promotion and environmental justice perspectives can be combined into an integrated movement for environmental health justice in health promotion. Drawing on Canadian experiences, we describe the historical contributions and limitations of each …
Residential Segregation In The Industrializing City: A Closer Look, Jason A. Gilliland, Sherry H. Olsen
Residential Segregation In The Industrializing City: A Closer Look, Jason A. Gilliland, Sherry H. Olsen
Geography & Environment Publications
This article maps and measures several dimensions of residential segregation in Montreal in 1881, thereby adding to our understanding of the social structure of the industrial city. Taking advantage of an unusual historical database—a historical geographic information system (H-GIS)—we locate 17,000 individual households with precision, and evaluate the "dissimilarity" of neighborhoods along several social dimensions and at various levels of spatial aggregation. The empirical findings suggest that Montreal was highly segregated along lines of ethnic identity as well as socioeconomic status; segregation values increased inversely with size of the spatial unit, but precision of unit boundaries have negligible effect. Coupling …
Locating Xenophobia: Debate, Discourse, And Everyday Experience In Cape Town, South Africa, Belinda Dodson
Locating Xenophobia: Debate, Discourse, And Everyday Experience In Cape Town, South Africa, Belinda Dodson
Geography & Environment Publications
In May 2008, South Africa experienced an outbreak of violence
against foreign Africans living in the country. Political
leaders expressed shock and surprise, but there has in reality
been long-standing and well-documented hostility toward
African immigrants in South Africa. Several competing explanations
have been put forward, with debate gaining urgency
and polarization since the xenophobic attacks of 2008. After
a selective review of the relevant literature to sketch the
contours of that debate, this paper presents findings from
research conducted with African immigrants living in Cape
Town. Their experiences provide further evidence that antiimmigrant
attitudes and behaviors on the part …

Putting The Pieces Together: Endometriosis Blogs, Cognitive Authority, And Collaborative Information Behaviour, Diane M. Neal, Pamela J. Mckenzie
FIMS Presentations
Abstract: Endometriosis causes female pelvic pain and infertility. This study examines blogs written by endometriosis patients in the context of collaborative information sharing. Preliminary discourse analysis supported previous studies that found patients questioning medical professionals’ cognitive authority. Additionally, the blogger’s affective authority may play a role in readers’ information judgements.

A New Model For Semantic Photograph Description Combining Basic Levels And User-Assigned Descriptors, Hyuk-Jin Lee, Diane M. Neal
A New Model For Semantic Photograph Description Combining Basic Levels And User-Assigned Descriptors, Hyuk-Jin Lee, Diane M. Neal
FIMS Publications
Few studies have been conducted to identify users’ desired semantic levels of image access when describing, searching, and retrieving photographs online. The basic level, or the level of abstraction most commonly used to describe an item, is a cognitive theory currently under consideration in image retrieval research. This study investigates potential basic levels of description for online photographs by testing the Hierarchy for Online Photograph Representation (HOPR) model, which is based on a need for a model that addresses users’ basic levels of photograph description and retrieval. We developed the HOPR model using the following three elements as guides: the …

Persistence And Change In Social Media, Bernie Hogan, Anabel Quan-Haase

In ―Star Trek‖, Scotty suggests that Transwarp beaming is ―like trying to hit a bullet with a smaller bullet, whilst wearing a blindfold, riding a horse‖ (Abrams, 2009). The study of social media faces similar challenges because new tools are developed at a rapid pace and existing tools are constantly being updated with new features, policies, and applications. Users tend to migrate, in often unpredictable ways, to new tools as well as to adopt multiple tools simultaneously, without showing consistent media preferences and habits (Quan-Haase, 2008). As a result, for scholars it sometimes feels as if the social media landscape …

FirstNationsyouthinCanadademonstratedisproportionatelyhighratesofnegative behaviors such as violence, substance abuse, and leaving school early. An understanding of historical context and current environment helps explain these patterns. Providing culturally relevant opportunities for youth to build healthy relationships and leadership skills has the potential to increase youth engagement. Over the past four years our multidisciplinary team of researchers, educators, program developers, and community leaders have worked together to develop a number of school-based initiatives that focus on increasing youth engagement through building on strengths and the promotion of healthy relationships. Specific strategies include peer mentoring, a credit-based academic course, and transition conferences for grade 8 …

Promoting System-Wide Cultural Competence For Serving Aboriginal Families And Children In A Midsized Canadian City, Ruby Ambtman, Suzanne Hudson, Reid Hartry, Dawne Mackay-Chiddenton
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
This article describes the work of the Circle of Courage, a cross– cultural group committed to improving the cultural competence of organizations providing services to Aboriginal populations in a midsized city in Canada. Rather than concentrating on indi- viduals’ cultural competence, the Circle targets mainstream orga- nizations. Many of its activities, therefore, require organizations to examine themselves and make systemic changes. Providing support to Aboriginal staff of mainstream organizations is a significant element of the Circle’s initiatives. After an analysis of cultural proficiency—particularly at the organizational and systemic levels—the history of the Circle, its internal functioning, and its specific activities …
Exploring The Relationship Between Aboriginal Tourism And Community Development, John W. Colton, Kelly Whitney-Squire
Exploring The Relationship Between Aboriginal Tourism And Community Development, John W. Colton, Kelly Whitney-Squire
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
Aboriginal communities are increasingly turning toward aboriginal tourism develop- ment to diversify their economic base, validate their claims related to proprietary rights over traditional lands and re-connect youth with elders and the community to their land and their culture. Oftentimes, these development initiatives are tied to broader commu- nity development goals, yet the success of the tourism project is generally measured by its market readiness, revenue generation and job creation. The purpose of this article is to provide insight into the breadth of aboriginal community development benefits from tourism development through a review of literature of selected international case studies …

Aboriginal Practitioners Speak Out: Contextualising Child Protection Interventions, Dawn Bessarab, Frances Crawford
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
One month before the June 2007 Federal Government Emergency Intervention in the Northern Territory some 55 West Australian Aboriginal child protection workers attended a 3-day summit in Fremantle. Their purpose as front-line practitioners from across the State was to identify how more nurturing and healing communities could be developed and supported in a climate of despair. This paper reports on how the summit was designed and on some of the ideas and concerns that emerged within this dialogical space of cooperative inquiry. The project was a partnership between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal representatives of university, government, and community-service bodies. Aboriginal practitioners …

Beyond Scientific Materialism: Toward A Transcendent Theory Of Consciousness, Imants Barušs
Beyond Scientific Materialism: Toward A Transcendent Theory Of Consciousness, Imants Barušs
Psychology
Analysis of the social-cognitive substrate of scientific activity reveals that much of science functions in an inauthentic mode whereby a materialist world view constrains the authentic practice of science. But materialism cannot explain matter, as evidenced by empirical data concerning the nature of physical manifestation. Nor, then, should materialism be the basis for our interpretation of consciousness. It is time to move beyond scientific materialism and develop transcendent theories of consciousness. Such theories should minimally meet the following criteria: they should be based on all of the usual empirical data concerning consciousness, including altered states of consciousness; they should take …
The Contribution Of Domain Specificity In The Highly Modular Mind, Axel Barcelo Aspeitia, Angeles Erana, Robert Stainton
The Contribution Of Domain Specificity In The Highly Modular Mind, Axel Barcelo Aspeitia, Angeles Erana, Robert Stainton
Philosophy Publications
Is there a notion of domain specificity which affords genuine insight in the context of the highly modular mind, i.e. a mind which has not only input modules, but also central ‘conceptual’ modules? Our answer to this question is no. The main argument is simple enough: we lay out some constraints that a theoretically useful notion of domain specificity, in the context of the highly modular mind, would need to meet. We then survey a host of accounts of what domain specificity is, based on the intuitive idea that a domain specific mechanism is restricted in the kind of information …
