Mothers' Work And Children's Lives: Low-Income Families After Welfare Reform, Rucker C. Johnson, Ariel Kalil, Rachel E. Dunifon

Upjohn Press

This book examines the effects of work requirements imposed by welfare reform on low-income women and their families. The authors pay particular attention to the nature of work—whether it is stable or unstable, the number of hours worked in a week and the regularity and flexibility of work schedules. They also show how these factors make it more difficult for low-income women to balance their work and family requirements.

Access To Health Information By People Living With Hiv/Aids In Nigeria, Nelson Edewor

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study is a survey of access to health information by people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Nigeria. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 respondents. The data obtained were analysed using simple percentages. The study reveals that libraries are not used as sources of health information by PLWHA. The study recommends that libraries should repackage information for PLWHA, educate users, and organise awareness/outreach services in collaboration with NGOs on the subject of HIV/AIDS.

The Economic Stimulus: Gauging The Early Effects Of Arra Funding On Health Centers And Medically Underserved Populations And Communities, Peter Shin, Brian K. Bruen, Emily Jones, Leighton C. Ku, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

During times of economic crisis, community health centers and other health care safety net providers become even more vital to the communities they serve. The current downturn, with its high levels of unemployment and enormous impact on family incomes, carries major implications for health insurance coverage. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), signed into law on February 17, 2009, provided slightly more than two billion dollars to community health centers for capital improvements, expansion (or retention) of personnel and services, and adoption of health information technology. All of these uses not only support health centers' mission to serve populations …

Impaired Geometric Reorientation Caused By Genetic Defect, Laura Lakusta, Banchiamlack Dessalegn, Barbara Landau Feb 2010

Impaired Geometric Reorientation Caused By Genetic Defect, Laura Lakusta, Banchiamlack Dessalegn, Barbara Landau

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The capacity to reorient in one's environment is a fundamental part of the spatial cognitive systems of both humans and nonhuman species. Abundant literature has shown that human adults and toddlers, rats, chicks, and fish accomplish reorientation through the construction and use of geometric representations of surrounding layouts, including the lengths of surfaces and their intersection. Does the development of this reorientation system rely on specific genes and their action in brain development? We tested reorientation in individuals who have Williams syndrome (WS), a genetic disorder that results in abnormalities of hippocampal and parietal areas of the brain known to …

Priming Expectancies: Effects On Neurophysiological Indices Of Expectancy Violations And Drinking Behavior, Tyler Brumback Feb 2010

Priming Expectancies: Effects On Neurophysiological Indices Of Expectancy Violations And Drinking Behavior, Tyler Brumback

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Investigations of the anticipated effects of alcohol indicate that cognitive frameworks are highly correlated with drinking and other variables associated with alcohol use, explaining up to 50% of the variance in drinking outcomes (Goldman, Darkes, & Del Boca, 1999; Goldman, 2002; Goldman et al., 2006; Goldman, Reich, & Darkes, 2006). Furthermore, alcohol expectancies appear to mediate the relationship between a variety of risk factors, such as sensation seeking, and alcohol outcomes (Darkes, Greenbaum, & Goldman, 2004). The current study examined the relationship of these cognitive networks with a physiological index of expectancy violation

Participants were presented with statements reflecting a …

magine if you will the near perfect statefunded program. Yes, I know, such words sound like an oxymoron, given the track record of both state and federally-funded programs, past, present and undoubtedly in the future. Indeed, such words sound almost mythological in light of recent attempts by the federal government to spend us out of the current recession with still doubtful results (so far, a record deficit). Yet, you’re an imaginative individual and can put aside petty political persiflage and visualize such a program. Not only does this program do precisely what it said it would do, it does it …

Organizational Citizenship Behavior And Its Relationship With Major Attitudinal Factors: A Comparative Study Between Two Police Regions Of Turkish National Police, Orhan Bez Feb 2010

Organizational Citizenship Behavior And Its Relationship With Major Attitudinal Factors: A Comparative Study Between Two Police Regions Of Turkish National Police, Orhan Bez

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine whether major attitudinal factors are among the predictors of Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) in the Turkish National Police Organization (TNP). It investigates the influences of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and organizational justice on OCB between two police regions (Region I and Region II) of the TNP. The results indicate that job satisfaction has a direct positive influence on employees’ OCB perception. Affective commitment is also positively related to OCB perception of TNP members. Only partial support was obtained for the relationship between normative and continuance commitments and OCB perceptions. Among organizational justice …

An Experimental Investigation Of Variation In Modern Hebrew, Michal Temkin Martinez Feb 2010

An Experimental Investigation Of Variation In Modern Hebrew, Michal Temkin Martinez

Mary Ellen Ryder Linguistics Lab

This paper reports the results of an experimental rating task testing the acceptability of variation in Modern Hebrew spirantization. Modern Hebrew spirantization is manifested by the alternation of the stops [p], [b], and [k] with their

fricative counterparts [f], [v], and [x], in which fricatives occur post-vocalically and root-finally, and stops occur elsewhere, as in (1).

(1) /p/ to [f] /pgS/ [lifgoS] [pagaS] ‘to meet’

/b/ to [v] /bgd/ [livgod] [bagad] ‘to betray’

/k/ tp [x] /ktb/ [lixtov] [katav] ‘to write’

Due to historical sound mergers and more recent borrowings, there are acoustically identical stops and fricatives that do not …

Reading Round-Up: 2/12/10

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

1. China Beat team members Jeff Wasserstrom and Kate Merkel-Hess have a new piece at Foreign Policy discussing the recent joint report issued by the governments of China and Japan regarding the 1937-38 Rape of Nanking. In“Nanjing By the Numbers”, they argue that focusing on the continued controversy over the massacre’s death toll overlooks the greater significance of the report:

It would be too much to hope that any joint report over the causes and events of the Pacific War would reach accord on every issue. But as partisan as the debate on the Nanjing massacre has often seemed, a …
