Estimating Economic Activity From Space, Tilottama Ghosh Mar 2010

Estimating Economic Activity From Space, Tilottama Ghosh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate estimates of the magnitude and spatial distribution of both formal and informal economic activity is necessary to achieve various social and economic goals of societies and countries at different levels of analysis. However, collection of data on economic variables, especially of national and sub-national income levels is problematic due to various shortcomings in the data collection process. Additionally, the informal economy estimates are often excluded from official statistics. Thus, developing alternative methods for estimating these economic activities may prove to be useful and necessary. This research demonstrates the potential of developing spatially explicit estimates of economic activity from nighttime …

Bend-La Pine School District: Population And Enrollment Forecasts 2010-11 To 2030-31, Portland State University. Population Research Center, Charles Rynerson, Vivian Siu, Richard Lycan, David West

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

The Bend-La Pine School District (BLPSD) enrolled 15,898 students in Fall 2009, an increase of 61 students from Fall 2008. This followed a loss of 13 students between Fall 2007 and Fall 2008. These two most recent years are in sharp contrast with the previous 19 years of uninterrupted gains of more than 200 students each year. K-12 enrollment growth averaged about 350 students per year from 1990 to 2000, and about 400 students per year from 2000 to 2007. The enrollment trends align closely with the housing and employment trends described in this report. Housing growth began to slow …

Throw Out Those Paper Bookplates! The Digital Bookplate Program At The University Of Western Ontario, Cheryl Martin, Lisa Rae Philpott

Western Libraries Presentations

Western Libraries (The University of Western Ontario) has recently developed a digital bookplate program. We create a digital bookplate in Fireworks (a graphics design program) using a set of standard templates. Then we link a web page with information about the bookplate to a search, which displays all of the material purchased for that donation in the catalogue. The donor is provided with the web-link and can view the bookplate and the catalogue records for the material that was purchased or donated.

From Infant Attachment Security To Mother-Child Emotion Dialogues: Understanding Emotion Communication In The Early Years, Celia Hsiao, Greg Moran, Nina Koren-Karie Mar 2010

From Infant Attachment Security To Mother-Child Emotion Dialogues: Understanding Emotion Communication In The Early Years, Celia Hsiao, Greg Moran, Nina Koren-Karie

Psychology Presentations

Researchers have become increasingly interested in understanding the developmental trajectory of attachment security from the preverbal infancy period to later verbal stages. One approach that has received much theoretical and empirical support is to examine the capacity of children and their mothers to work together in co-constructing narratives around personal and emotional events(Bretherton, 1990; Oppenheim, Koren-Karie & Sagi-Schwartz, 2007). It has been suggested (Oppenheim & Koren-Karie, 2009) that open communication between a secure dyad during infancy, involving primarily non-verbal signals, provides the basis for an open and fluid communication style in the preschool years. The secure child feels confident in …

Maternal State Of Mind: How Does It Impact The Ability To Flexibly Adjust To Siblings' Needs?, Kathleen Anne O'Connor, Greg Moran, David R. Pederson, Sandi Bento Mar 2010

Maternal State Of Mind: How Does It Impact The Ability To Flexibly Adjust To Siblings' Needs?, Kathleen Anne O'Connor, Greg Moran, David R. Pederson, Sandi Bento

Psychology Presentations

PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of maternal state of mind on the ability to adapt interactive behavior and perceptions of attachment behaviour across siblings.

RESULTS: Maternal sensitivity and perceptions of siblings’ attachment behavior were highly correlated across children of non-Autonomous mothers, but not Autonomous mothers. Non- Autonomous mothers behaved similarly on eight domains of interactive behaviour, while Autonomous mothers behaved similarly on only two.

CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that maternal state of mind is implicated in the ability to flexibly adapt interactive style and relationship-specific attachment perceptions across siblings.

The Continuity Of Attachment Development From Infancy To Toddlerhood: The Role Of Maternal Sensitivity, Ya F. Xue, Greg Moran, David R. Pederson, Sandi Bento Mar 2010

The Continuity Of Attachment Development From Infancy To Toddlerhood: The Role Of Maternal Sensitivity, Ya F. Xue, Greg Moran, David R. Pederson, Sandi Bento

Psychology Presentations

The patterns of attachment between infants and mothers have far-reaching consequences for infants’ development; infants with secure attachments fare better socially and emotionally than those with non-secure attachments (Deklyen & Greenberg,2008).

Theory suggests that differences in attachment quality result from differences in mother-child interactions: secure attachment results from a history of sensitive interactions and non-secure attachment from insensitive interaction.

Since the attachment security is held to be a product of the quality of interactions; a change in the quality of interactions should theoretically lead to a change in attachment quality. Thus, a child in a secure relationship later encountering insensitive …

The Development Of Disorganized Attachment In Infants Of Adult And Adolescent Mothers, Tara Morley, Greg Moran, David Pederson, Sandi Bento, Heidi Bailey Mar 2010

The Development Of Disorganized Attachment In Infants Of Adult And Adolescent Mothers, Tara Morley, Greg Moran, David Pederson, Sandi Bento, Heidi Bailey

Psychology Presentations

Attachment theory proposes that maternal sensitivity is the main developmental determinant of Organized attachment relationships (Ainsworth Blehar, Waters & Wall, 1978; DeWolff & van IJzendoorn, 1997); In contrast, Disorganized attachment relationships are held to be the product of frightened, frightening or atypical maternal behaviour (Lyons-Ruth, Bronfman, & Parson, 1999; Main & Hesse, 1990).

However, recent research has identified associations between low levels of maternal sensitivity and Disorganized attachment in high-risk populations (Bernier & Meins, 2008; Moran, Forbes, Evans, Tarabulsy, & Madigan, 2008; van IJzendoorn, Scheungel & Bakermans-Kranenburg, 1999); This raises the possibility that maternal sensitivity may contribute to the development …

Beyond Sensitivity: Patterns Of Maternal Interaction In Secure Vs. Non-Secure Attachment Relationships, Tara Morley, Ya Xue, Kathleen O'Connor, Greg Moran, David Pederson, Sandi Bento Mar 2010

Beyond Sensitivity: Patterns Of Maternal Interaction In Secure Vs. Non-Secure Attachment Relationships, Tara Morley, Ya Xue, Kathleen O'Connor, Greg Moran, David Pederson, Sandi Bento

Psychology Presentations

Attachment theory proposes that the sensitivity of a mother’s interactions with her child is the main developmental determinant of the quality of their attachment relationship (Ainsworth et al., 1978; De Wolff & van Ijzendoorn, 1997).

Empirical findings have generally supported this assertion; however, the strength of this association remains a matter of debate as the results of empirical findings have been highly variable (Atkinson et al., 2000; DeWolff & van IJzendoorn, 1997).

Several researchers have suggested that assessing maternal behaviour as a single global dimension may fail to capture important variation in the quality of interactions that influence the developing …

Tangible Capital Assets Accounting Policy Implementation In Middlesex County, Glenda Ogilvie Mar 2010

Tangible Capital Assets Accounting Policy Implementation In Middlesex County, Glenda Ogilvie

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines the implementation aspects of the Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) standard for tangible capital assets (TCA) accounting in Middlesex County. A series of interviews with treasurers who work for municipalities in the region were conducted to evaluate the success of the new policy. The findings reveal that in order for local governments to effectively implement the new accounting procedure, having the necessary resources, especially in terms of money and people, is absolutely critical.

Exploring The Development Of Attachment In Infants Of Adult And Adolescent Mothers, Tara Morley, Greg Moran, David Pederson, Heidi Bailey Mar 2010

Exploring The Development Of Attachment In Infants Of Adult And Adolescent Mothers, Tara Morley, Greg Moran, David Pederson, Heidi Bailey

Psychology Presentations

While many studies have looked at the development of attachment relationships for adult and adolescent mothers separately, few studies have directly compared these two groups in a single study

The current study further explored the origins of attachment relationships for adolescent mothers and their infants by directly comparing the development of these processes with adult mothers and their infants

The hypothesis that differences in the distributions of attachment classifications among these two populations is a result of low levels of sensitivity has yet to be tested in a mediational analysis

The current study will test a model whereby differences in …

No. 23: Labour Migration Trends And Policies In Southern Africa, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams Mar 2010

No. 23: Labour Migration Trends And Policies In Southern Africa, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams

Southern African Migration Programme

Since 1990, there have been major changes to longstanding patterns of intra-regional labour migration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). At the same time, new channels of migration to and from the region have opened. Labour migration is now more voluminous, dynamic and complex than it has ever been. This presents policy-makers with considerable opportunities and challenges. In order to understand the exact nature of these challenges, it is important to have a good grasp of current labour migration characteristics and trends. Unfortunately, reliable, accurate and comprehensive data on labour migration is not available. The quality and currency of …

Catholic Schools, Urban Neighborhoods, And Education Reform, Margaret F. Brinig, Nicole Stelle Garnett Mar 2010

Catholic Schools, Urban Neighborhoods, And Education Reform, Margaret F. Brinig, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Notre Dame Law Review

This Article explores the implications of a dramatic shift in the American educational landscape—the rapid disappearance of Catholic schools from urban neighborhoods. Primarily because of their strong track record of educating disadvantaged children, these school closures are a source of significant concern in education policy circles. While we are inclined to agree that Catholic school closures contribute to a broader educational crisis, this Article does not address well-rehearsed debates about educational outcomes. Rather than focusing on the work done inside the schools, we focus on what goes on outside them. Specifically, using three decades of data from the Project on …

Can The Icc Ever Get It Right?, Richard Burchill Mar 2010

Can The Icc Ever Get It Right?, Richard Burchill

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Nesrine Malik makes clear with her title, “The ICC’s Blunder on Sudan,” that something has gone amiss with the efforts of Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo to ensure the ICC statute is applied to those circumstances it was meant to address. But why is something amiss in this situation? The Prosecutor has a mandate and the legal regime for the ICC is relatively clear (at least procedurally); the crimes it covers can always be debated, but there is a degree of clarity present as to what acts are addressed; so what has gone wrong? The difficulty lies in expectations about justice and …

Approval Plans, Discipline Change, And The Importance Of Human Mediated Book Selection, John Brantley Mar 2010

Approval Plans, Discipline Change, And The Importance Of Human Mediated Book Selection, John Brantley

Faculty & Staff Research & Creative Activity

This study examines holdings of 21 members of the Association of Research Libraries for books reviewed in American Historical Review. The study asserts that approval plans are inadequate for collecting from small publishers or from scholarship that crosses disciplinary boundaries. Although approval plans increase efficiency in collection development, the need for expert selection cannot be overstated. Results indicated that small publisher’s books were less likely to be in libraries than university press publisher’s books, and that history monographs are frequently classified outside disciplinary boundaries, and are therefore invisible to approval plans that define disciplines based on classification systems.

Carbon Emission Control Policies Within China’S Power Generation Sector, Zhenyu Zhang, Karina Schoengold Mar 2010

Carbon Emission Control Policies Within China’S Power Generation Sector, Zhenyu Zhang, Karina Schoengold

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

The paper examines the potential for emissions control policy using the example of the power generation sector in China. The analytical model is developed using a joint production function, where carbon emissions and electricity are jointly produced using capital and fossil fuel inputs. Abatement of emissions can be achieved by investment in two types of capital – production capital that improves the production efficiency, or abatement capital that removes the emissions. The analytical model shows that economic growth can be achieved while still keeping the emission stock at a stable level. The results are estimated using data from China’s electricity …
