Social Aggression In Pre-Adolescent Females: A Guide For School Counselors, Emily Ann Kibler

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

Until recently, aggression in girls was primarily ignored in the literature. Social aggression in girls is prevalent and needs continuing attention. Social aggression can be particularly hurtful to girls as relationships and social groups are often of utmost importance in girls’ lives. Reasons for and themes of female aggression are explored in order to help school counselors identify factors behind aggressive acts. Signs of aggression in victims and the effects on both the victim and aggressor are reviewed in order to offer intervention efforts. Interventions that school counselors may implement include: training in assertiveness and problem solving; combating isolation; peer-based …

African American Children Living In Urban Environments: An Investigation Of Early Literacy And The Influence Of Psychological Strengths And Family Support, Pia Stanard May 2010

African American Children Living In Urban Environments: An Investigation Of Early Literacy And The Influence Of Psychological Strengths And Family Support, Pia Stanard

Theses and Dissertations

Literacy is a basic fundamental skill for academic, professional, and social success in our culture. Children with low exposure to reading can experience reading difficulties, diminished cognitive development, and poor academic outcomes. Inconsistency in the conceptualization of early literacy has hampered research and development of successful, translational early literacy interventions, particularly for children from low-income households. Preschoolers from low-income, urban backgrounds (n = 426), including 221 females and 205 males aged 35 - 60 months (M = 47.46, SD = 6.44) participated in an investigation of the latent factorial structure of early literacy. The study also explored whether children’s psychological …

The Effect Of Racial Socialization On Parental Stress In A Sample Of African American Parents, Thompson Remy Jones May 2010

The Effect Of Racial Socialization On Parental Stress In A Sample Of African American Parents, Thompson Remy Jones

Theses and Dissertations

The typical duties of parenting may be multiplied when they must be performed within very demanding situations and with limited personal and physical resources. African American families may also be subject to race-related challenges that further complicate child rearing. In an effort to combat the effect of imminent racism, some African American parents have sought to racially socialize their children. Within the racial socialization literature, it has been determined that racially socializing one’s children has positive effects for those children, however, there is some ambiguity regarding the way it is best done. Although racist acts cannot be predicted nor avoided, …

Biobehavioral Mechanisms Of Emotion And Hiv Disease: Exploring Potential Mediators Of The Relation Between Trait Positive And Negative Affect And Hiv Health Status, Karen Stewart May 2010

Biobehavioral Mechanisms Of Emotion And Hiv Disease: Exploring Potential Mediators Of The Relation Between Trait Positive And Negative Affect And Hiv Health Status, Karen Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

Considerable research supports an association between negative psychosocial functioning and adverse health outcomes. The biobehavioral model is well supported and posits that these effects occur via alterations in physiological response and health damaging behaviors. Evidence is accumulating about potential benefits of positive psychosocial functioning; however, less is known about the mechanisms of these effects. The broaden-and-build model of positive emotions holds that positive emotions can undo the physiological and behavioral restrictions associated with negative emotions and promote resource development. The present correlational study sought to explore whether cortisol, medication adherence, and health behaviors (smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and nutrition) …

Background: With increasing numbers of women joining the evening/nighttime and extended-hour workforce, there is a need for quality childcare during these hours. Methods: This project, conducted in Japan, sought to compare the effects of expanded child-care on the development and adaptation of 185 young children after five years in care. Parents completed a survey on the childrearing environment at home, their feelings of self-confidence, and the presence of support for childcare. Childcare professionals evaluated the development of children. Results: The results of multiple regression analysis indicate that factors in the home environment, not length of center-based care, explained developmental risks …

Have Metropolitan Planning Organizations Improved Regional Policy Making? The Cases Of Kansas City And St. Louis., Joseph Edward Campbell May 2010

Have Metropolitan Planning Organizations Improved Regional Policy Making? The Cases Of Kansas City And St. Louis., Joseph Edward Campbell

Dissertations

Historically, municipalities and regions continually competed for a share of transportation funds. The process was dominated by state Departments of Transportation where cooperation, equity and participation were limited. Eighteen years ago the federal government provided metropolitan areas with the opportunity to play a larger role in the regional transportation process. On December 18, 1991 President George H.W. Bush signed the Intermodal Surface Transportation Equity Act (ISTEA). The legislation ushered in a new era of cooperation between state and local leaders by empowering regional Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs). The federal legislation’s intention was to allow a region, through their MPO, to …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Messages Conveyed In Parent-Adolescent Communication About Substance Use: Variations Along Dimensions Of Maternal And Familial History Of Substance Abuse, Nikola Zaharakis May 2010

A Qualitative Analysis Of Messages Conveyed In Parent-Adolescent Communication About Substance Use: Variations Along Dimensions Of Maternal And Familial History Of Substance Abuse, Nikola Zaharakis

Theses and Dissertations

Little research has examined the content of parent-adolescent communication about substance use and variables that may influence it. Using a grounded theory approach for secondary data analysis, qualitative data were drawn from a longitudinal study of coping and substance use in a sample of urban African American adolescents (N=132; M= 13.77 years) and their mothers in Richmond, VA. Transcripts of interviews with participants’ mothers regarding their conversations with their adolescent about alcohol, tobacco or other drugs were microanalyzed by two coders in three sets according to the youth participant’s maternal and familial history of substance abuse. Findings revealed considerable similarity …

Librarians, Knowledge Creation, And Scholarship: A Matter Of „Ba‟ 場, Debbie Morrow

Presentations

How do you engage in professional development? What do you think of expectations for academic librarians to participate in scholarship and dissemination? Do you feel your library’s leadership and organizational structure are adequately supportive of librarians’ efforts to grow and be successful? The role of scholarship in academic librarians’ professional development is examined in the context of a model of knowledge creation borrowed from the corporate world and business expert Ikujiro Nonaka. Tacit and explicit knowledge, knowledge conversion stages, and ‘ba’ –facilitating environments for individual and organizational knowledge growth – are discussed in the context of the presenter’s library.

Proportional Representation Or Plurality Voting Electoral System: Its Positive And Negative Aspects On Democracy, Martin Okolik May 2010

Proportional Representation Or Plurality Voting Electoral System: Its Positive And Negative Aspects On Democracy, Martin Okolik

Student Theses and Dissertations

Free and fair elections are crucial elements for defining democracy. Fair elections will have to represent voters' true intent in the sense of proportionality between the votes gained in the election and the seats obtained in parliament. My project compares both the Majoritarian model and the Consensus model of democracy in terms of their electoral fairness. I ask the fundamental question: Which of the two systems promotes fairness and legitimacy in the electoral process? Most scholars have looked at this issue from different perspectives. Thus far, no study exists which explores both systems (Majoritarian and Consensus) from a fairness perspective. …

Factors Influencing State Prescription Drug Policy, Rochelle Rene' Henderson May 2010

Factors Influencing State Prescription Drug Policy, Rochelle Rene' Henderson

Dissertations

Within the realm of health care, prescription drugs have been of particular concern for state legislators in terms of cost, safety, and distribution. Whether prompted by financial, social, or political pressure, states have tried to address issues associated with prescription medications by adopting or attempting to adopt a variety of prescription drug policies. My dissertation expands beyond the analysis of a singular prescription drug policy and examines the factors affecting prescription drug policies aimed at acquisition, safety and distribution. A negative binomial regression model is employed for each of the prescription drug policy areas to ascertain the influence of internal, …

A Net-Present Value Analysis For A Wind Turbine Purchase At A Small Us College, Nicholas H. Johnson, Barry D. Solomon

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Wind power is becoming an increasingly attractive method of electric power generation due to concerns with global climate change, increasing uncertainty of future oil supplies, and energy security. While most large-scale wind turbines are part of wind farms, which help states meet state renewable energy standards, several colleges and universities in the United States have purchased wind turbines for financial and educational purposes. This paper gives details of a cost-benefit analysis completed for a small liberal arts college in Illinois, Principia College, which is considering buying a single large-scale turbine. The process set forth here can easily be adapted to …

Effect Of Visual Input On Vowel Production In English Speakers, Amanda C. Richardson May 2010

Effect Of Visual Input On Vowel Production In English Speakers, Amanda C. Richardson

Linguistics Honors Projects

This study analyzes whether there should be a visual component to a model of speech perception and production by comparing the jaw opening, advancement, and rounding of American English and non-English vowels in the presence and absence of a visual stimulus. Surprisingly, jaw opening did not change production, but the presence of the visual stimulus was found to be a significant factor in participants’ vowel advancement for non-English vowels. This may be explained by lip rounding, but requires further research in order to develop a full understanding of the impact of visual input on vowel production to be used in …

Economic Redevelopment Options Study For The Oakcrest Area, City Of Kennedale, Christopher Bobbitt, Mike Foreman, Renatta Lindsey, Jean Petr

Public Administration Capstone Reports - Archive

The City of Kennedale has entered into a binding agreement with four sexually oriented businesses located in the Oakcrest Area. In 2012 this agreement will require the sexually oriented businesses to close down and move out of Kennedale. The remarkable question that the City of Kennedale has asked is how and by what means these sites should be redeveloped. The purpose of this project was to research and analyze potential economic development options that could revitalize the four sites where the existing sexually oriented businesses are located and spur economic development in the entire Oakcrest Area.

2010 Legislative Summary, J. David Aiken May 2010

2010 Legislative Summary, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

What were some of the major issues addressed in the 2010 Legislature? Water, fences, wind energy and the state budget.

What happened with water? The main bill was LB862, which extends the $10/acre irrigated acre tax to all Natural Resource Districts (NRDs) that are preparing an integrated water management plan. Formerly, this authority had been extended only to Republican Basin NRDs, but the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that limitation unconstitutional. The Unicameral also repealed the water checkoff on corn and sorghum, and opened up the integrated management plan process to all NRDs. LB862 may help NRDs get closer to where …

Are Major League Baseball Starting Pitchers Compensated For Stadium Risk?, Joseph Glatman Zaretsky May 2010

Are Major League Baseball Starting Pitchers Compensated For Stadium Risk?, Joseph Glatman Zaretsky

Economics Honors Projects

This paper examines the significance of stadium effects on the determination of starting pitcher salaries. It models stadium effect first under the assumption of perfect certainty, and then includes risk through uncertainty. Using starting pitchers’ statistics between 1990 and 2008, this paper determines that the stadium effect is not significant in the model with perfect certainty, but becomes significant when uncertainty (risk) is introduced. An unexpected result of the test shows, however, that there is a fundamental difference between the American League, where the stadium effect is significant, and the National League, where it is insignificant in both models.
