In this cross-sectional qualitative study the intersection of race and sexual orientation in the family planning process of interracial queer women-identified (IQW) couples was examined. For total participants N = 13. Themes included the affirmative nature of the intentionality of the family planning process for IQW couples as well as the difficulties of assisted conception. Participants spoke to their relationship to their family of origin and their fears and visions regarding their own family formation, related to genetic heritage, language, and traditions. Support systems offered by family of choice and social networks were discussed, specifically the need for community mirroring …

This study sought to explore direct service providers' perceptions of transformative justice (TJ) as an intervention in child sexual abuse (CSA). This qualitative, exploratory study explored how TJ informed direct service providers' work with people impacted by CSA (survivors, bystander, and offenders). Twelve direct service providers who had been trained in transformative justice participated in this study. Participants were interviewed for 50 minutes. The interviews were audio-taped and questions focused on the following topics: 1) What are direct service providers' perspectives about how transformative justice impacts their ability to work with offenders, bystanders and survivors? 2) What are direct service …

This theoretical study explores the phenomenon of the therapist's personhood during consultation in relation to her professional demeanor, role, and responsibilities. This study examines the idea and treatment of this personhood through psychodynamic and relational perspectives. By comparing and contrasting the different models of the therapist via these two theories, the study is grounded in the history and evolution of ideas about the therapist, and elucidates how these ideas have changed over time. This theoretical study explored the social construction of adoption present within North American discourse and how this has impacted subsequent theoretical understandings of adoptee development. This was done with a particular emphasis on Eriksonian theories of adoptee development. This study utilized a cultural artifact, namely the character of Claire in Tim Kring's (2006) television show, Heroes. Claire's case is then used to compare current uses of Eriksonian theories of psychosocial ego development with possible, more comprehensive iterations of Erikson's theory. The impact and relevance to social work theory, research and practice are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of single mothers in graduate school. Past research indicates heightened rates of psychiatric distress among single mothers (Jayakody and Stauffer, 2000) as well as overrepresentation of single mothers living in poverty (Kates, 1996; Zhan and Pandey, 2004). Qualitative studies on single mothers within post-secondary and undergraduate programs exist, but little research has been done on those obtaining graduate level degrees. This exploratory study considered the following question: What is the coming out experience of polyamorous individuals? The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how people manage multiple partnerships in a society that values monogamy as the accepted norm, and how people experience the process of coming out to friends, family and others in their community. The study was conducted with 73 participants via an online qualitative survey which also included some demographic questions. This study was undertaken to examine the current views of therapist selfdisclosure among clinicians practicing in the field today. The study examined what factors effect self-disclosure, such as a therapist's years of experience, the population they are working with and their own experience in therapy. Therapists who participated had to have a minimum of five years working in the mental health field. Sixty-two therapists participated by filling out an anonymous survey. Therapists rated how often they used self-disclosure. This qualitative study examines to what extent African American gay males who frequent the black barbershop share in their expressions of sexuality and masculinity while in the barbershop. The study further investigates the influence of the black barbershop on African American gay males and their comfort with expressing their masculinity and sexuality in this setting and the notion that the black barbershop functions as a microcosm of the black community, by reinforcing heterosexist philosophies. This qualitative study was undertaken to explore, and bring into social work discourse, gender nonconforming participants' experiences and meaning-making of binary gender regulation, specifically within relational contexts throughout their lives. Qualitative interviews were completed with 13 participants who identified with the descriptor of gender nonconforming in some way. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how young adults with perinatal HIV infection understand and experience the concept of family and to elicit their perceptions of how "family" has helped or hindered their ability to cope with their illness. The sample was composed of young adults currently receiving primary care from the Johns Hopkins Intensive Primary Care Clinic (IPC) located in Baltimore, Maryland. The IPC clinic provides comprehensive medical care and psychosocial support for over 200 children and youth with HIV infection from birth to 24 years. This study was undertaken to explore the perceived job satisfaction of social workers and other clinicians, and the relationship of their satisfaction with work to their sleep habits. It was hypothesized that sleep deprivation would negatively impact one's satisfaction with work. A survey was designed that implemented two previously tested measures, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the abridged versions of the Job Descriptive Index and the Job In General scale (aJDI/aJIG). The present study used a mixed method approach to examine the impact of workplace bullying on mental health professionals (n=48). Data were collected using an anonymous online survey containing The Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ), a standardized measure of workplace bullying. This study was undertaken to determine the therapeutic action of working in the symbolic order. Lacan critiques psychoanalytic theory for reducing psychoanalysis to a therapy of the imaginary, thus ignoring the true significance of Freud's discovery. A review of contemporary accounts of therapeutic action established interpretation, the clinical relationship, and the position of the analyst as key identifiers of a theory of therapeutic action. The case of Dora was utilized to identify Freud's theory of therapeutic action. This theoretical study explored the social construction of race and racial identity through the lens of Queer Theory and Narrative Theory. Although the concept of race is understood as a social construct, research literature shows that this concept is complex and that there are many factors that contribute to the social construction of race in a way that has real life consequences for people. The use of Queer Theory and Narrative Theory to examine this social construct provides a broader base of understanding for clinical applications. The researcher provides recommendations for social workers in their work with diverse populations.

Researchers have found that, despite their seeming interchangeability, guilt and shame can be considered separate emotional responses. The research question of this theoretical thesis was to examine the manifestation of prior trauma in the older adult population. Previous research focused mainly on interpersonal trauma theory. The literature on elders who were survivors of childhood interpersonal trauma was minimal. The experiences of older adults who have a history of interpersonal trauma were further examined through attachment theory and Relationalcultural theory. Attachment theory speaks to the difficultly of a child exposed to prolonged interpersonal trauma to develop an adaptive method to regulate affect and seek help from others when distressed. There were ten participants, including one principal, two school committee members, 3 teachers and four mental health workers working in the elementary schools in Amherst, MA. This study addressed the following research question: What is the value of having preventative mental health services for all elementary school students in the Amherst public elementary schools?
