A Heavy Burden: The Individual Costs Of Being Overweight And Obese In The United States, Avi Dor, Christine Ferguson, Casey Langwith, Ellen Tan

More than 60% of the United States population is overweight or obese, and if the current trajectory continues, 50% of the population will be obese by 2030. There is no question that being obese or overweight, is more costly than being of normal weight. Using existing literature, we have detailed the costs incurred due to overweight and obesity that affect working-age adults at the individual level.

Among the items discussed in this review, overweight or obese individuals bear the full burden for some costs, such as the value of lost life, lost wages, gasoline costs, and, when applicable, life insurance. …

State Use Of Workforce System Net Impact Estimates And Rates Of Return, Kevin Hollenbeck

The net impacts and private and social benefits and costs of workforce development programs were estimated in three separate studies; two of them in Washington and one in Virginia. The programs included the public job training system, programs at community and technical colleges, adult basic education, private career schools, high school career and technical education, and vocational rehabilitation for disabled individuals and for blind or visually impaired individuals. The net impact analyses were conducted using a nonexperimental methodology. Individuals who had encountered the workforce development programs were statistically matched to individuals who had not. College Student Generational Status: Similarities, Differences, And Factors In College Adjustment, James B. Hertel

The Psychological Record

This study explored similarities and differences between 130 first-year college students classified as first or second generation. Multiple regression analyses and between-group t tests were performed to analyze the data. The study found that firstgeneration students reported significantly less parental income and social adjustment. On-campus friend support predicted overall adjustment better for second-generation students whereas intellectualism predicted better for first-generation students. Selfesteem and on-campus support consistently predicted adjustment for the entire sample. Implications are suggested.

This qualitative research study was designed to explore the route toward healing from childhood sexual abuse. It focuses on adults who employ Christian spirituality and seek counseling from the Black church. The objective of this study was to investigate perceptions of how the Black church implements services for this abused population. This study interviewed pastors- of a Black church- and counselors (N=6), exploring their beliefs about healing, and analyzing interventions implemented within the therapeutic relationship with a survivor of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Relational Aggression, Intimate Partner Violence, And Gender: An Exploratory Analysis, Emily M. Wright, Michael L. Benson

This study explores the effects of romantic relational aggression on intimate partner violence. The concept of relational aggression denotes a type of nonphysical aggression that is specific to relationships and that has only recently been recognized in the psychological literature. Using responses to the Conflict Tactics Scale from adults participating in the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, romantic relational aggression is examined with regard to male and female intimate partner violence perpetration and victimization. Results indicate that romantic relational aggression is a predictor of partner violence perpetration and victimization among both males and females.

Challenges Faced By Movement Therapists In Terms Of Recognition Of Their Profession : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Michelle J. Walsh

This empirical qualitative study was conducted to determine what movement therapists do and how their services interact with traditional psychotherapy. The purpose of this project was to provide information about dance/movement therapy as a way to promote the practice and move towards bridging the gap between this alternative therapy and mainstream psychotherapies. This exploratory and descriptive study was carried out through semi-structured interviews. The sample (N=9) was made of up dance/movement therapists who were certified by the American Dance Therapy Association. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore which aspects of a multiracial elementary school most contributed to the racial identity development of alumni. The central question asked of the participants was "Do you believe that attending Manhattan Country School affected your racial identity development?" The outcomes of this project can be useful for educators and administrators in both public and independent school settings to understand how best to help their students develop a healthy racial identity. Unprepared postsecondary students and poor high school retention rates emphasize a significant issue with education in the U.S. Although there have been increases in the number of programs to address retention and matriculation to degree attainment, little research has been completed to examine outcomes of these programs. A conversational approach is developed to explain the ubiquitous presence of rumors, urban legends, and gossip as arising from their conversational properties rather than from side effects of cognitive processing or "effort after meaning." It is suggested that the primary function of telling rumors, gossip, and urban legends is not to impart information to the listener or alleviate listener anxiety about the topic but to entertain or keep the listener's attention, thereby enhancing social relationships. In this way, the traditional views of such stories are turned on their head, and an implication is that there is no essential feature of …

Cognitive Empathy And Emotional Empathy In Human Behavior And Evolution, Adam Smith

The Psychological Record

This article presents 7 simple models of the relationship between cognitive empathy (mental perspective taking) and emotional empathy (the vicarious sharing of emotion). I consider behavioral outcomes of the models, arguing that, during human evolution, natural selection may have acted on variation in the relationship between cognitive empathy and emotional empathy resulting in two separable, complementary systems. I predict the existence of 4 empathy disorders using a concept of empathic imbalance. I propose hypotheses about the psychology of autism, antisocial personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, and Williams syndrome. This approach generates new predictions and integrates some previous theoretical work by …
