The Psychological Record

The medieval period-roughly the 1,000 years from the classical Greco-Roman age to the Renaissance and modern erahas long been neglected in the history of psychology. Various reasons have been offered for why this period is treated so lightly, for example, that it was a Dark Age, or that it was dominated by antiintellectual Christian thought. This essay challenges such reason ing and, in conjunction with critiquing these obstacles to inquiry, provides a cursory sketch of some of the more interesting figures of this millennium to stimulate psychologists to reconsider this era.

Congressional Testimony

The testimony explores the essential legal issue of the extent to which executive agreements related to H.R. 4596 have any force as law in the United States. The agreements made it clear that they did not, by themselves, “provide an independent legal basis for dismissal” of claims of Holocaust victims filed in any courts of the United States. Instead, the executive branch simply agreed to file a “statement of interest” in such lawsuits to the effect “that U.S. policy interests favor dismissal on any valid legal ground.” Some lower courts have nonetheless given the statements of interest preemptive effect as …

Although researchers are aware of the fact that public and group stigma affect mental health help-seeking behavior, there has been no research on level of collective self-esteem and stigma within specific social networks related to members' attitudes toward seeking mental health services. This study aimed to identify a relationship between sorority women's collective self-esteem, or how much they value their membership in the sorority, and their perceived stigma from their fellow sorority members on their overall attitudes toward seeking mental health services. When Medicare Part D was unveiled in 2006 one controversial feature was the inclusion of a coverage gap which potentially forced enrollees to pay thousands of dollars out-of-pocket. This thesis asked the question: How has falling into the donut hole affected seniors' views and feelings of health insurance and government, and how has this experience informed their sense of civic engagement? Two hypotheses were presented at the outset of this qualitative study. The first was that since seniors are a particularly active demographic they would respond to the donut hole experience with some kind of political action. The second supposed …

This study explored the experiences of play therapists working cross-racially with children under the age of 7 to determine if and how play therapy is impacted by a cross-racial therapeutic dyad. Specifically, this study explored whether or not clinicians altered their play therapy approach, made adjustments to the available toys, if race was viewed as connected to the presenting problem, and if play or interactional style differed based on a child's race. 12 clinicians currently conducting cross-racial play therapy with children under age 7 were interviewed using a fixed demographic questionnaire and semi-structured interview guide. Individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders typically have multiple impairments making them difficult to engage and retain in treatment. The most consistent finding across studies is that the most effective service delivery is integrated, i.e. the same clinician or clinical team provides appropriate mental health and substance abuse interventions in a coordinated fashion in a single setting with a goal of helping the client to manage both illnesses. While critical components of integrated service delivery have been identified, how these components are successfully integrated to engage and retain clients in a case has been more elusive. This …

This study was designed to examine whether clinicians who identified themselves as maintaining a religious or spiritual practice as part of self-care routines found these practices helpful in continuing to practice effectively. To collect information regarding this question, eleven clinicians doing direct service work were interviewed; each clinician was asked the same set of questions. The study was qualitative in nature. Each clinician had a unique way of expressing, carrying out, and maintaining his or her religious and/or spiritual practices. As a whole, however, the eleven stories created a surprisingly cohesive narrative. All eleven clinicians reported maintaining religious and/or spiritual …

Clinicians' Diagnostic Evaluation Of Chronic Childhood Trauma Disorder : An Examination Of The Clinical Utility Of Developmental Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, April T. Salvaterra

In this study licensed mental health clinicians working with traumatized children and adolescents participated in a mixed method web survey examining professional opinions on the provisional Developmental Trauma Disorder diagnosis submitted for inclusion in the DSM-V. It was found that 88.3% of participating clinicians agreed that the diagnostic criteria for Developmental Trauma Disorder adequately described the symptomatology displayed by their clients with histories of complex trauma. Eighty-six percent of clinicians reported that they would assign their clients a diagnosis of DTD were it available in the current DSM-IV, and 75.5% of those clinicians said they would use DTD in place …

Why Purchase When You Can Repurpose? Using Crosswalks To Enhance User Access, Teressa M. Keenan

The Mansfield Library subscribes to the Readex database U.S. Congressional Serial Set, 1817-1994 (full-text historic reports of Congress and federal agencies). Given the option of purchasing MARC records for all 262,000 publications in the Serial Set or making use of free access to simple Dublin Core records provided by Readex, the library opted to repurpose the free metadata. The process that the Mansfield Library used to obtain the Dublin Core records is described, including the procedures for crosswalking the metadata to MARC and batch loading the bibliographic records complete with holdings information to the local catalog.
