This project will help demonstrate how sustainable ("green") streets contribute to the well-being of a community, including the physical and mental health of older and younger adults, along with the environment and economy. The project will collect data in Portland, OR neighborhoods to answer the following research questions: Are residents living near sustainable streets more physically active in their neighborhood? Do residents living near sustainable streets interact with neighbors more and demonstrate higher levels of neighborhood social capital? What are residents’ opinions of sustainable streets? This paper analyzes the properties of standard estimators, tests, and confidence sets (CS’s) in a class of models in which the parameters are unidentified or weakly identified in some parts of the parameter space. The paper also introduces methods to make the tests and CS’s robust to such identification problems. The results apply to a class of extremum estimators and corresponding tests and CS’s, including maximum likelihood (ML), least squares (LS), quantile, generalized method of moments (GMM), generalized empirical likelihood (GEL), minimum distance (MD), and semi-parametric estimators. Forecasting The New York State Economy With “Terraced” Vars And Coincident Indices, Eric Doviak, Sean P. Macdonald

Publications and Research

This paper introduces “Terraced” Vector Autoregressive (VAR) models, an innovative twist on traditional VAR modeling, which allows the econometrician to simultaneously forecast both exogenous and endogenous variables and the confidence intervals around those forecasts. In an application of our Terraced VAR framework, we have estimated coincident indices of economic activity for the United States, New York State and the six largest metropolitan areas of New York State and incorporated them into Terraced VARs, which forecast the unemployment rate, total non-farm employment, real wages and average hours worked in manufacturing in those regions.

My Own Private Library: A Peek Into The Personal Library Of A Librarian, Karen Odom

Georgia Library Quarterly

The librarian-author discusses her personal library consisting mainly of cookbooks in three bookcases which reflects her love for cooking. She states that her favorite is the classic "The Joy of Cooking" which has the best recipe she has made for chocolate chip drop cookies and that she has all the Paula Deen cookbooks and "The Columbia Restaurant Spanish Cookbook" by Adela Hernandez Gonzmart. The author notes that each of her cookbooks evokes memories for her, like a particular item's time and place of purchase.

Active Learning For The Millennial Generation, Amy Harris

The article discusses the need for active learning in library instruction classes that have Millenial or Generation Y students who have short attention spans and prefer education in entertaining forms. To promote learning, such students reportedly have to be actively engaged with the material for them to do worthwhile research. It is stated that one teacher divided her class into small groups and let the students become the leaders, while she took the role of a student, which allowed her to raise points to direct the flow of the instruction.

The article discusses the relationship between library volunteers and the administrative staff in supporting libraries. To foster communication and exchange of ideas, a representative from each group should reportedly be appointed to the board of the other. It is stated that library staff and volunteers should be aware of all plans and their roles clearly defined, that surprises should not be practiced and that people should be advised of any personal agenda that may affect them.

Columbus Area Library Association Celebrates 25 Years

The article highlights the 25th year of support for Columbus and the Chattahoochee Valley area libraries in Georgia by the Columbus Area Library Association (CALA) in 2010. It is stated that the group presented the Library Recognition Award to Mildred L. Terry library branch manager Silvia Bunn for increasing its circulation 150 percent and that a 250-dollar scholarship for a library science masters degree has been established. A special proclamation was presented to Esther Curry in April for her long-term library support.

A New Perspective On Late Holocene Social Interaction In Northwest Alaska: Results Of A Preliminary Ceramic Sourcing Study, Shelby L. Anderson, Matthew T. Boulanger, Michael D. Glascock

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This research examines the evidence for prehistoric ceramic exchange networks over the last 2000 years in northwest Alaska through the use of neutron activation analysis of ceramic artifacts. Results from ceramic analysis on eight coastal and inland archaeological sites identified three source macrogroups and three associated subgroups. Clay source diversity and shared source macrogroups between geographically distant sites suggest the use of multiple sources and/or the movement of pots between production locales, mirroring related patterns in pottery stylistic data. Although additional analytical work is needed to fully understand the changing character of clay procurement and ceramic distribution across this time …

Closure, though a term with great rhetorical force in the capital punishment context, has to date evaded systematic analysis, instead becoming embroiled in ideological controversy. For victims who have rubbed the rights lamp for years, inclusion in capital proceedings and accompanying closure opportunities are perceived as a force with the potential to grant wishes of peace and finality. Scholars, however, argue for rebottling the closure genie lest closure itself prove false or its pursuit violate a defendant's constitutional rights. The American Psychological Association (APA) maintains that the integrity and validity of research findings is partially supported by reporting adequate sample demographic characteristics and methodological procedures. This paper is intended as a review of progress as the field has recognized the importance of accounting for participant diversity in psychological research. We hope that this review serves as a reminder to collect this information and include it in published manuscripts. We also suggest that editors and reviewers ask for this information on manuscripts where it has not been included.

Social networking sites have surged in popularity lately, the most popular being MySpace and Facebook. Between them these two have more than 360 million registered users worldwide. Never before have so many people gathered to communicate through a single medium, and at such a personal level. In the U.S., 65% of American teenagers and 75% of young American adults ages 18-24 now have a profile on a social networking site, while 57% of American adults ages 25-34 also have an online profile according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project.1
