This research can provide social work professionals and others with additional background knowledge and techniques to work with this special population, so clients are not subject to further oppression. For this study, ten individuals that identify as coming from multiple ethnic descents were selected to …

The question this paper addressed is whether or not the type of disability a person has and the severity of it affects his or her identity, and ultimately, acceptance or rejection of a cure. The researcher surveyed disabled students at California State University San Bernardino about perception of their disability, its severity and intrusiveness, the extent to which their disability is integrated into their identity and their desire for a cure.
The Effectiveness Of Using Homicide And Auto Theft Rates As Indicators Of Violent And Property Crime In The United States, Joseph Allan Schwartz
The Effectiveness Of Using Homicide And Auto Theft Rates As Indicators Of Violent And Property Crime In The United States, Joseph Allan Schwartz
Theses Digitization Project
The primary goal of this study is to determine whether the use of homicide and motor vehicle theft rates can predict overall violent and property crime rates respectively. Recent studies indicate that homicide rates seem to act as a primary and reliable representation of other violent crime rates, while motor vehicle theft rates seem to act as a primary representation of other property crime rates. This research for the author's thesis indicates otherwise. Measures considered include the Uniform Crime Report, the National Crime Victimization Survey, and the National Incident-Based Reporting System.

Monitoring Progress Towards Gender-Equitable Poverty Alleviation: The Tools Of The Trade, Bipasha Baruah
Monitoring Progress Towards Gender-Equitable Poverty Alleviation: The Tools Of The Trade, Bipasha Baruah
Data and Test Instruments
This article contributes towards unpacking the relationships between gender, poverty and inequality at several interrelated levels. It explores the concept of poverty as a useful starting point not only for understanding how gender fits into it, but also for understanding why gender is not reducible to poverty. It provides a brief history of how poverty came to be analysed from a gender perspective, and how such a perspective advances our understanding of poverty and inequality. The article follows this with a critical analysis of important gendered and non-gendered approaches developed to measure poverty, and outlines their contributions to advancing the …

Rent-To-Own Agreements: Customer Characteristics And Contract Outcomes, Michael H. Anderson, Sanjiv Jaggia
Rent-To-Own Agreements: Customer Characteristics And Contract Outcomes, Michael H. Anderson, Sanjiv Jaggia
Economics
The rent-to-own (RTO) industry, by offering immediate access to household goods for a small periodic fee with no credit check or down payment, has strong appeal to low income and financially distressed consumers. An important policy question is whether an RTO agreement is used as a rental/lease with build-in purchase option or as something more akin to an installment loan. Given the embedded options to return the item or to purchase it early, the actual rent paid by RTO customers is substantially lower than the oft-reported total rent which assumes that agreements go to term. We employ a log-normal censored …

The closure of the Hawaiian longline swordfish fishery over the period 2001–2004, which was motivated by the protection of endangered sea turtles, created the elements of a natural experiment that allows identification of the market transfer of catch (and sea turtle bycatch) to other regions. This paper exploits the fact that the vessels in the Hawaiian longline fishery sell their catch in the US fresh swordfish market to analyze the pattern of changes in US fresh and frozen swordfish consumption both before and after the closure regulation was imposed. The mechanisms by which any unintended consequences on endangered sea turtles …
Modelling Skewness And Elongation In Financial Returns: The Case Of Exchange-Traded Funds, Sanjiv Jaggia, Alison Kelly-Hawke
Modelling Skewness And Elongation In Financial Returns: The Case Of Exchange-Traded Funds, Sanjiv Jaggia, Alison Kelly-Hawke
Economics
Recent studies have documented the importance of asymmetry and tail-fatness of returns on portfolio-choice, asset-pricing, value-at-risk and option-valuation models. This article explores the nature of skewness and elongation in daily Exchange-traded Fund (ETF) return distributions using g, h and (g x h) distributions. These exploratory data analytic techniques of Tukey (1977) reveal patterns that are hidden from a cursory glance at conventional measures for skewness and elongation. The g, h and (g x h) distributions provide parameter estimates that indicate substantial variation in skewness and elongation for individual ETFs; nonetheless, some trends are discovered …
High-Versus Low-Context National Cultures: Preferences For Type Of Retailer And For Human Interaction, Gregory E. Osland, Bela Florenthal
High-Versus Low-Context National Cultures: Preferences For Type Of Retailer And For Human Interaction, Gregory E. Osland, Bela Florenthal
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
A purpose of this research is to investigate differences between low-and high-context national cultures in retail settings. In particular, we examined cultural differences in preference for human interaction while shopping, "emotional warmth" characteristics, perception of quality service, and retail channel preferences. As businesses more frequently employ multi-channel strategies in global settings, this topic of national culture gains importance and can shed light on key factors that shape consumers' retail preferences. Our findings indicate that national cultures differ in terms of retail channel preferences, preference for human interaction, and relationships between the two. Managerial implications and future research are addressed, as …

Epa's Council For Regulatory Environmental Modeling : A Case Study Of Science Policy Implementation , Genevieve M. Borg
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
As environmental problems became more complex, policy and regulatory decisions become far more difficult to make. The use of science has become an important practice in the decision making process of many federal agencies. Many different types of scientific information are used to make decisions within the EPA, with computer models becoming especially important. Environmental models are used throughout the EPA in a variety of contexts and their predictive capacity has become highly valued in decision making.
The main focus of this research is to examine the EPA’s Council for Regulatory Modeling (CREM) as a case study in addressing science …

This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. This survey report presents …

Discovery Mentoring: Creating Student Connections proposes to develop a student-to-student mentoring program which would match undeclared, incoming first year students to mentors. This program facilitates the objectives of University College by building upon their efforts to create a “small community,” feel in a large university. This project is intended to address Theme II of VCU’s 2020 Strategic Plan: “Achieve national recognition as a learning-centered research university that embraces a world-class student experience.” Such a mentoring program would enhance the student experience of our incoming first-year students and help out declared students to connect more strongly with VCU through personal relationships …
