To See Or Not To See: Prestimulus Α Phase Predicts Visual Awareness, Kyle E. Mathewson, Gabriele Gratton, Monica Fabiani, Diane M. Beck, Tony Ro

Publications and Research

We often fail to see something that at other times is readily detectable. Because the visual stimulus itself is unchanged, this variability in conscious awareness is likely related to changes in the brain. Here we show that the phase of EEG α rhythm measured over posterior brain regions can reliably predict both subsequent visual detection and stimulus-elicited cortical activation levels in a metacontrast masking paradigm. When a visual target presentation coincides with the trough of an α wave, cortical activation is suppressed as early as 100 ms after stimulus onset, and observers are less likely to detect the target. Thus, …

China To Me

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

We’ve added a new blog to our daily reading–Evan Osnos’s dispatches at The New Yorker. Currently blogging from Vietnam, Osnos posted a few thoughts on Friday about Vietnam’s lengthy relationship with China (“Long After We Left“) and a few days earlier the delightfully-titled “From Karenina to Cyrus,” which in one short vignette traces the intellectual influences from West to East over the past few generations.

In his first post to the blog, Osnos mentioned a favorite China watcher here atChina Beat, Emily Hahn. Osnos writes, “I like to imagine what she would have made of this blog. Upon arriving in …

Asset-Based Policy In Hong Kong: Child Development Fund, Michael Sherraden, Li Zou

Center for Social Development Research

The government of Hong Kong officially launched the HK$300 million Child Development Fund (CDF) in November 2008. In the words of Hong Kong’s Secretary for Labor and Welfare, Mr. Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, the CDF’s purpose was to “capitalize on the strengths of various sectors in the community to help our disadvantaged children.” The Hong Kong government drew upon the asset-building research and experience of the Center for Social Development (CSD) at Washington University in St. Louis. In November 2006, Michael Sherraden of CSD delivered a keynote address at the Child Development Forum organized by the Hong Kong Government’s Commission on …

Effective Leadership In A Service Center Setting: An Analysis Of How To Increase Tenure Among Employees Through A Blended Leadership Model, Larissa Martin Mar 2009

Effective Leadership In A Service Center Setting: An Analysis Of How To Increase Tenure Among Employees Through A Blended Leadership Model, Larissa Martin

Theses and Graduate Projects

Service Centers experience high turnover rates among employees. Creating a healthy working environment through effective leadership in a service center setting can be difficult due to the particular features of a service center. This analysis of the organizational literature on service centers leads to the development of a blended leadership model. Using the Transformational and Transactional Leadership models with an emphasis on role clarity, empowerment, trust, approachability of the leader, employee/leader relationship, contingent versus non-contingent behavior, and monitoring, the blended leadership model incorporates these concepts to provide an ideal type that would guide a call center leader in helping the …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

One of the topics we raised in China in 2008 was the changing relationship between the Chinese leadership and regular people over the past years. Last weekChina Digital Times pointed to another example of this changing relationship–Wen Jiabao answering netizens’ questions online. We’ve run a few related pieces at the site before, such as Nicolai Volland’s “Boss Hu and the Press” and Richard Kraus’s “Preserving the Premier’s Calligraphy at Beichuan Middle School.”

The Social Influence Qualities Of Social Network Sites: A Qualitative And Experimental Investigation, J. Paul Conner Mar 2009

The Social Influence Qualities Of Social Network Sites: A Qualitative And Experimental Investigation, J. Paul Conner

Theses and Dissertations

While social network sites (SNS) are a popular form of new media, the literature has not investigated the social influence of these internet sites. Using a mixed method approach of qualitative interviews and a laboratory experiment, this study tests a process model predicting the effects of communication processes and technology on social influence. This model suggested that SNSs may be more effective at social influence than face-to-face communication. A qualitative study was performed to determine whether the hypotheses were plausible whereby it was suggested that SNSs may influence other individuals and SNSs might be a more effective at influencing individuals …

New Avenues For Integrating Information Literacy Into The Curriculum, Abigail Hawkins Gonzales, P. S. Mcmillen, Jennifer L. Fabbi Mar 2009

New Avenues For Integrating Information Literacy Into The Curriculum, Abigail Hawkins Gonzales, P. S. Mcmillen, Jennifer L. Fabbi

Library Faculty Research

A generally understood mission of library instruction programs is to promote information literacy (IL) and critical thinking across the curriculum. The majority of programmatic IL collaborations with higher education core curricula are found in introductory composition or communication courses. Other more unconventional avenues offer potentially more effective ways to teach students the basic IL concepts and skills. At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), conversations with College of Education faculty helped librarians identify a strategic and unique point of entry for IL instruction. Using the ADDIE model as a conceptual framework, librarians and an instructional designer met with the …

Transparency Ratings For Spanish–English Cognate Words, José A. Montelongo, Anita C. Hernández, Roberta J. Herter Mar 2009

Transparency Ratings For Spanish–English Cognate Words, José A. Montelongo, Anita C. Hernández, Roberta J. Herter

Library Scholarship

Cognates are words that are orthographically, semantically, and syntactically similar in two languages. There are over 20,000 Spanish-English cognates in the Spanish and English languages. Empirical research has shown that cognates facilitate vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension for language learners when compared to noncognate words. In this study, transparency ratings for over two thousand nouns and adjectives drawn from the Juilland and Chang-Rodríguez’ Spanish Word Frequency Dictionary were collected. The purpose for collecting the ratings was to provide researchers with calibrated materials to study the effects of cognate words on learning.

Making It Click: Using An Audience Response System To Engage Students And Assess Learning, Ann Marie Smeraldi Mar 2009

Making It Click: Using An Audience Response System To Engage Students And Assess Learning, Ann Marie Smeraldi

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

As accessibility to technology in the classroom increases and promises to improve student engagement and performance, it is easy to be tempted into using wikis, blogs and clickers without fully understanding the implications of their use. Librarians and other educators continuously experiment with new technologies in an attempt to lure Millennials away from their iPods and cell phones, but without careful consideration of the pedagogy that supports the use of these new technologies, their effectiveness as learning tools is diminished. This session will focus on the use of an audience response system (“clickers”) to engage students in active learning during …
