Memory And Musical Expectation For Tones In Cultural Context, Meagan E. Curtis, Jamshed J. Bharucha Apr 2009

Memory And Musical Expectation For Tones In Cultural Context, Meagan E. Curtis, Jamshed J. Bharucha

Dartmouth Scholarship

WE EXPLORED HOW MUSICAL CULTURE SHAPES ONE'S listening experience.Western participants heard a series of tones drawn from either the Western major mode (culturally familiar) or the Indian thaat Bhairav (culturally unfamiliar) and then heard a test tone. They made a speeded judgment about whether the test tone was present in the prior series of tones. Interactions between mode (Western or Indian) and test tone type (congruous or incongruous) reflect the utilization of Western modal knowledge to make judgments about the test tones. False alarm rates were higher for test tones congruent with the major mode than for test tones congruent …

An Oriental Christ: A Perfect Condition After The State Was God, Thomas Nathaniel Eaves Apr 2009

An Oriental Christ: A Perfect Condition After The State Was God, Thomas Nathaniel Eaves

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Where do we begin with our understanding of the human composition of God, with humanity’s embracement of the existential? Humanity has rendered faith volatile and constant, a consequence, not flaw, merely of developed sentience. Yet, whether God or evolution has burdened humanity with this responsibility, faith and belief continue their inexplicable and unwearied existence. People, whether atheistic, agnostic, or faith bound, have proven the existence of an utterly human liability for irrationality, or certainly rational subscription. Emile Durkheim wrote of religion as purely existent within shared life, unsusceptible to segregation and compartmental comprehension. Max Weber considered religion as providing prescientific …

Is It Windy Enough For You? The Potential For Wind Energy To Generate Electricity, Income, And Energy Security In Rural East-Central Nebraska, Roy M. Zach

Student Work

Citizens living in the Columbus, Nebraska area once met all of their local electric power needs via the Columbus and Monroe hydropower facilities. Today, this area imports significant quantities of electricity via high voltage power transmission lines, thereby creating dependencies on areas far away. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential for wind power within this area of Nebraska—in order to generate electricity, income, and energy security at a more local level. A thorough analysis of the local wind resource, and its comparison to the local electric power demand, demonstrates the economic feasibility of producing electricity from …

Swearing In The Cinema: An Analysis Of Profanity In Us Teen-Oriented Movies, 1980-2006, Dale Cressman, Mark Callister, Tom Robinson, Chris Near

Faculty Publications

The exposure of children to profanity continues to be a concern for parents, media researchers, and policy makers alike. This study examines the types, frequency, and usage of profanity in movies directed at and featuring teenagers. A review of relevant literature explores the nature, use, and psychology of profanity, its potential social effects, and its prevalence in the media. A content analysis was conducted of the ninety top-grossing domestic teen films in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s (thirty from each decade) in the US based on domestic gross box-office amounts. Results indicate no change in preferences in types of profanity …

Who Will Care For The Women?, Candace Howes Apr 2009

Who Will Care For The Women?, Candace Howes

Economics Faculty Publications

Over 20 million people today, including children, working-age disabled, and elderly persons, require some sort of assistance to live safely. Largely because women live longer than men, well into the ages when the probability of needing care increases, 70 percent of elderly people who need long-term care are women. Furthermore, most long-term care is provided by women, mainly as unpaid care in the home, or as low-paid care in institutions and community settings (Stone & Weiner 2001). The United States faces a severe long-term care crisis because of the nation's inability to plan for the changing demographic balance. The crisis …

Racial Salary Discrimination In The Nba: 2008-2009, Kyle Rehnstrom Apr 2009

Racial Salary Discrimination In The Nba: 2008-2009, Kyle Rehnstrom

Major Themes in Economics

This paper examines racial salary differences in the National Basketball Association for the 2008-2009 season. Previous studies that used data from the mid-1980s estimated salary premiums of between 16 and 20% for white players whose performance was comparable to black players. A study that used data from the late-1980s to early-1990s showed no significant salary differential between white and black players. Another study, using data from the 1990s, found no racial discrimination in the NBA, but did find a height premium of 7.4%. This paper will update previous studies by using more recent data to analyze salary discrimination in the …

What Determines The Level Of Funding For An Endangered Species?, Josh Mahoney Apr 2009

What Determines The Level Of Funding For An Endangered Species?, Josh Mahoney

Major Themes in Economics

The U.S. federal government allocates resources for the protection of endangered species. Using an ordinary least squares regression, the study analyzes what variables affect the amount of funds an endangered vertebrate receives from the federal government. The results suggest that animal size affects spending decisions. Specifically, larger animals receive more money. Animals designated as high priorities by the federal government do not receive significantly more funds than animals given lower priority. Animals in conflict with economic development, however, are given preference in spending decisions. Overall, the results indicate a lack of consistency in current policy towards endangered species preservation.

The Economics Of Golf: An Investigation Of The Returns To Skill Of Pga Tour Golfers, Kelsey L. Rinehart Apr 2009

The Economics Of Golf: An Investigation Of The Returns To Skill Of Pga Tour Golfers, Kelsey L. Rinehart

Major Themes in Economics

Golfers on the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Tour make up an elite labor market. The earnings of a PGA Tour golfer are determined by his performances in tournaments. Using PGA Tour data from 2002 and 2008, this paper explores returns to skill of PGA golfers and changes in returns to skill over the time period. Greens in regulation (GIR), putts per GIR, and sand saves are found to be statistically significant. The analysis in this paper does not provide any support to the idea that returns to skills for PGA golfers have changed over time.

The Validity Of Karl Marx’S Theory Of Historical Materialism, Kaleb Shimp Apr 2009

The Validity Of Karl Marx’S Theory Of Historical Materialism, Kaleb Shimp

Major Themes in Economics

Marx’s theory of historical materialism uses the evolution of productive forces and class struggle to explain history. With the fall of communism in the 20th century, many components of historical materialism have come under fire. This paper is a defense of the validity of historical materialism and concludes that some of the arguments against Marx’s theory are unfounded, while others still hold weight. What remains is a broad view of history that still has value.

Effects Of A Credit Crunch On Employment By Sector In The U.S.: How Have Recessions Associated With Credit Crunches Differed From Other Recessions?, Michael Boevers Apr 2009

Effects Of A Credit Crunch On Employment By Sector In The U.S.: How Have Recessions Associated With Credit Crunches Differed From Other Recessions?, Michael Boevers

Major Themes in Economics

Economists debate how important credit availability is to sustaining real economic growth. Episodes of financial instability and tight credit create a “credit crunch.” This paper investigates the effects of a credit crunch on employment in broad sectors of the U.S. economy. Monthly employment data is used to compare changes in employment by sector during recessions associated with a credit crunch and recessions not associated with a credit crunch. The results suggest that there is not a significant difference in how employment is affected in these broad sectors. The evidence supports the idea of a financial business cycle.

Mitigating The Impact Of Aids On A Rural Community: Observations Of The Inner Workings Of A Rural Non-Governmental Organization, Kara Huselton

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this study project was to understand the impact of HIV/AIDS on a community and to assess the ability of a non-governmental organization to mitigate the negative effects of disease and poverty in the spaces where the government has failed to address community needs. The author observed employees at the Bhekuzulu Self Sufficient Project in rural KwaZulu Natal over a period of three and a half weeks in order to gain an understanding of the work done there. Secondary research was done to supplement these observations and better understand the social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS on a …

Critical Mass Representation In Uganda, Daisy-Cynthia Nneamaka Adi Apr 2009

Critical Mass Representation In Uganda, Daisy-Cynthia Nneamaka Adi

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In general, most societies of the world are patriarchal and as a result women’s participation in politics has historically been minute. To correct this fault, proponents of critical mass representation advocate for explicit quota systems that create special seats for women (e.g. women’s MPs), reserve spots for women or those which mandate the inclusion of women on national party lists. Proponents advocate critical mass with the expectation that female Members of Parliament (MPs) will enhance women’s rights. However, little is known about the actual contribution of female MPs to the enhancement of women’s rights in the countries where critical mass …

Alienation In Acholiland: War, Privatization, And Land Displacement In Northern Uganda, Nicole Kligerman Apr 2009

Alienation In Acholiland: War, Privatization, And Land Displacement In Northern Uganda, Nicole Kligerman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper presents the various dynamics, causes, and consequences of land conflicts in Acholiland. In order to comprehensively address these complex issues, this paper analyzes land conflict in connection to the Northern Uganda war, explaining the military strategies that resulted in widespread displacement and alienation from the land. This paper further explores changing Acholi cosmology and customary land law in connection to land alienation. Additionally, I examine local land conflicts as well as three privatization and “development” plans in relationship to preexisting land displacement issues. This paper highlights the opinions of my fieldwork participants regarding the importance of land to …

Teaching Peace: An Exploration In Youth Peace Building Through Peace Education Programs In Gulu Municipality, Northern Uganda, Julia Firestone Apr 2009

Teaching Peace: An Exploration In Youth Peace Building Through Peace Education Programs In Gulu Municipality, Northern Uganda, Julia Firestone

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

After more than two decades of conflict and instability in Northern Uganda, there is finally relative peace. Now is the time of post-armed conflict transformation. The establishment of peace during this time will determine the direction of much of Uganda. Because youth were greatly affected by the conflict, they are particularly important to building a “culture of peace” (Interview with Mapenduzi, 18/4/2009). This study aims to explore the broad mechanisms of peace education and the role of youth in peace building using the case study of Gulu municipality. The research also utilizes key community representatives to examine the non-youth perspectives …

The Modernization Of Fiji ’S Food System And The Resulting Implications On Fijian Society: A Synthesis, Brian Schultz Apr 2009

The Modernization Of Fiji ’S Food System And The Resulting Implications On Fijian Society: A Synthesis, Brian Schultz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Beginning in the early 19th century, Fiji’s contact with several industrialized nations of Europe and the west contributed to rapid changes in its food system– changes that have had massive effects on Fiji’s economy and politics, on both local and global scales, as well as on the health and identity of the people who call Fiji home. Using a longitudinal model, the author traces the modernization of the Fiji food system from before European contact, through the period of colonial rule, the introduction of the cash economy, and the beginnings of urbanization to its status in the spring of 2009. …

Rompiendo El Espejo Invertido: La Búsqueda Para Autosuficiencia Y Una Vida Campesina Y Digna, Tara Brian

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Introduction (excerpt) Over the last fifteen years, Ireland has undergone massive change: political, economic, social, and technological. During the Celtic Tiger that began in the mid 1990s, Ireland has been transformed from one of the poorest countries in Western Europe to one of the wealthiest. Resulting from this economic success and, concurrently with the expansion of the European Union, there has been a significant increase in Ireland’s migrant population. Due to the recent attraction of Ireland’s prosperity and progression, many from outside of Ireland have immigrated with hopes to reap economic and social benefits. Others are forced to migrate due …
