Effects Of Onset Density In Preschool Children: Implications For Development Of Phonological Awareness And Phonological Representation, Judith G. Foy, Virginia A. Mann Apr 2009

Effects Of Onset Density In Preschool Children: Implications For Development Of Phonological Awareness And Phonological Representation, Judith G. Foy, Virginia A. Mann

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Neighborhood density influences adult performance on several worked processing tasks. Some studies show age-related effects of density on children's performance, reflecting a developmental restructuring of the mental lexicon from holistic into segmental representations that may play a role in phonological awareness. To further investigate density effects and their implications for development of phonological awareness, we compared performance on dense and sparse onset words. We adapted these materials to three phonological awareness tests that were pretested on adults then administered to preschool children who were expected to vary in phonological awareness skills. For both the adults and the children who passed …

A Homeowner’S Last Gasp: Looking At The Redemption Process In Hennepin County, Minnesota, Michael Samuelson Apr 2009

A Homeowner’S Last Gasp: Looking At The Redemption Process In Hennepin County, Minnesota, Michael Samuelson

Geography Honors Projects

While the causes of foreclosure are generally well understood, the outcomes of foreclosure have been poorly documented. Although rare, home redemptions – when foreclosed homeowners retain their home after it has been sold in a foreclosure auction – are a possible outcome. This paper explores the occurrence of foreclosure redemptions in Hennepin County, Minnesota in the year 2005, and examines how and why some homeowners were able to keep their house after being foreclosed upon. Using GIS data from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and County Assessor, this paper analyzes the likelihood and spatial patterns of redemption.

Women’S Rhetorical Agency In The American West: The New Penelope, Casey Ryan Kelly Apr 2009

Women’S Rhetorical Agency In The American West: The New Penelope, Casey Ryan Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This essay theorizes women’s rhetorical agency in the nineteenth-century American West. Contrast between fluid gender norms in frontier life and the Cult of True Womanhood highlights how agency is confined by materiality. Agency is the capacity to recognize and act in moments when material structures are vulnerable to resignification. I offer an analysis of Frances Fuller Victor’s novella The New Penelope to demonstrate how pioneer women writers reinvented womanhood in light of socioeconomic changes.

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

We investigated factors that influence choice of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening test and assessed the most- and leastpreferred options among fecal occult blood testing (FOBT), flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, and double contrast barium enema among adults with varied race, gender, and geographic region demographics. Mixed methods data collection consisted of 10 focus group interviews and a survey of the 93 focus group participants. Participants were ≥50 years of age and reported not having been screened for colorectal cancer in the last ten years. Analyses examined differences by race, gender, and geographic location. Participants had modest knowledge about CRC and there were …

Nebraska Has Lots To Offer; No Joke, Sue Burzynski Bullard Apr 2009

Nebraska Has Lots To Offer; No Joke, Sue Burzynski Bullard

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Nebraska is sometimes a lot like Rodney Dangerfield: It gets no respect. It's a bum rap typically applied to the Midwest in general. And there it was from the first day I told family and friends I was moving to Nebraska.
"Why Nebraska," they asked.
The original short answer is to teach at a world-class university. But the longer I live here, the longer the answer gets.

Flying The Pirate Flag: Understanding The Fight Against And Prevalence Of The Internet Gift Economy, Zachary G. O'Leary Apr 2009

Flying The Pirate Flag: Understanding The Fight Against And Prevalence Of The Internet Gift Economy, Zachary G. O'Leary

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

The number of citizens affected by common internet access makes arguments over its governance of primary concern to all. Peer-to-peer file sharing, oftentimes allowing for copyright infringement, is currently a major use of internet infrastructure. A review of the legislative and technological attempts to prevent such infringement, as well as the reasoning behind its prevalence, provides insight into the tension created by present intellectual property rights; this is a tension between those it intends to protect and to reward.

The Injustice Of Justice: The Pursuit Of A Harmonious, Just, And Merciful World, Robert W. Boyle Apr 2009

The Injustice Of Justice: The Pursuit Of A Harmonious, Just, And Merciful World, Robert W. Boyle

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

There is no one universal definition of Justice. Such a limited view of right and wrong conflicts with our infinitely diverse world. The key to a harmonious global community is that justice is malleable and fluid, similar to water, where it can take the shape of its environment while still retaining the properties of fundamental rights. Our world will never come to a universal agreement on justice, due to the deeply embedded cultural beliefs and differing views, so a single understanding of justice is impossible. If the world can have a baseline understanding of right and wrong and the flexibility …

Practical Approximations To Quantify The Impact Of Time Windows And Delivery Sizes On Vmt Multi-Stop Tours, Miguel A. Figliozzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper studies approximations to the average length of Vehicle Routing Problems (VRP). The approximations are valuable for strategic and planning analysis of transportation and logistics problems. The research focus is on VRP with varying number of customers, demands, and locations. This modeling environment can be used in transport and logistics models that deal with a distribution center serving an area with daily variations in the demand. The routes are calculated daily based on what freight is available. New approximations and experimental settings are introduced. Average distance travelled is estimated as a function of the number of customers served and …

The participants were selected according to the criteria of being an older adult, working with or volunteering for older adults, or having been involved in a project which considered the older population as a subgroup within the total population. The participants were personally invited by the researcher to be interviewed and the interview took approximately 40 minutes. Results indicated that creating …

Improving Board Communication: An Assessment Of Interpersonal, Small Group And Organizational Communication Of A Ten-Month-Old Nonprofit Organization, Martha C. Johnson

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

People who lead community organizations as volunteers may be successful by engaging in dialogue, building consensus and making decisions in order to accomplish the organization’s mission. This communication audit of a 10-month-old, 17-member nonprofit group employed questionnaires, interviews and participant observation to study the idea that information members receive about interpersonal and small group communication during the study would improve the effectiveness of their meetings and decisions. Grounded in social construction and coordinated management of meaning theory (e.g. Berger & Luckmann, 1966; Cronen, Barnett & Harris, 1979; Pacanowsky & Trujillo, 1982; Pearce, 1989; Maside, 1990; Shotter, 1993; Miranda & Saunders, …

The Role Of Angel Investors In Strategy From The Perspective Of Communication Theory, Kevin V. Mcconnaghy

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The degree to which corporate directors are involved in strategy is subject to a wide range of influences and therefore is best viewed in the context of a continuum that extends from minimal involvement to perhaps the formulation of strategy. While studied extensively, the role of boards in strategy suffers from definitional issues, lack of access and other control related parameters. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role of the board in a selected population that controls for many of the major factors influencing board engagement in strategy. As an exploratory study, this research is directed toward …
